Scientists warn that glaciers in the Alps and the Pyrenees are experiencing one of their worst years on record, with 2026 on track to rival or even surpass the record ice loss seen in 2022. At an elevation of 3,456 meters, large sections of the Grande Motte Glacier were left exposed, with snow cover disappearing to reveal grey ice and deep crevasses after weeks of extreme temperatures.
