Jul 31, 2026
Castile and León, Spain - July 29, 2026 Thick plumes of smoke and active flames rise over dry terrain and vegetation as a major forest fire burns under a hazy sky. The video shows Guardia Civil officers standing beside patrol vehicles along a roadway surrounded by burned ground. Groups of people gather near parked cars while dense smoke drifts across the landscape. Emergency vehicles with flashing lights are positioned along the road as the response continues. The wildfire started at about 1 p.m. on July 29, 2026, south of Fermoselle in Arribes del Duero Natural Park near the Portuguese border. Authorities raised the fire to Índice de Gravedad Potencial (IGR) Level 2 because of the risk to the population and non-forest assets. Multiple communities were evacuated, including Cibanal, Formariz, Fornillos de Fermoselle, Mámoles, Muga de Sayago and others, affecting around 14 towns. Fermoselle and Fariza were placed under confinement. "Breaking News Fermoselle Forest Fire (Level 2). Level 2 has been declared for the forest fire in Fermoselle (Zamora) and surrounding areas. Residents from several localities are being evacuated and relocated, including the evacuation of the Muga de Sayago care home. Exercise extreme caution and keep routes clear for emergency services." The UME and numerous ground and aerial resources were deployed as strong winds complicated firefighting efforts.
