VARIOUS OF FIREFIGHTING HELICOPTERS OPERATING IN BURNING AREASTIANA, CATALONIA, SPAIN - JUNE 26, 2026: A fast-moving wildfire burned about 4,000 hectares (9,900 acres) in northeastern Spain on Friday, forcing the evacuation of around 250 residents as firefighters battled multiple blazes across the country following an intense heatwave. The largest fire broke out Thursday between the towns of Tamarite de Litera and Alcampell in Spain's northeastern region of Aragon. Residents of three villages were evacuated, while authorities instructed people in a nearby town to remain indoors because of heavy smoke. The fire has spread across a mountainous forest area, according to regional authorities, and dozens of firefighters and aerial resources have been deployed to contain the blaze. Authorities believe the fire was sparked by a dry thunderstorm. On Friday, Aragon activated a “red-plus” alert for extreme wildfire risk that is set to continue until Monday, strictly forbidding agricultural and other activities that could ignite wildfires. Several other wildfires were also burning across Spain on Friday. In neighboring Navarra, another wildfire forced the evacuation of three villages after flames spread from farmland into a pine forest near Ezcabarte. The nearby city of Pamplona was engulfed in thick smoke, and the regional president warned that the fire could continue burning for several days. In the northwestern province of Leon, more than 10 fires ignited after lightning strikes, although favorable weather conditions helped firefighters contain most of them. Spain has faced an exceptionally hot start to summer, with this week recording the country's two hottest June days on record. Last summer was Spain's worst wildfire season in more than three decades, according to the Environment Ministry.
