Mozambique said Tuesday that nine of its nationals had been killed in violent xenophobic attacks targeting immigrants in South Africa. Several African countries, including Ghana, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Malawi, have repatriated some of their nationals affected by the violence in South Africa. Africa’s most industrialized economy has experienced repeated outbreaks of xenophobic violence in the last two decades. The deadliest attacks erupted in 2008, when violence that began in Alexandra Township spread across the country, killing 62 people. Further anti-migrant violence followed in 2015 and 2019, leaving at least 19 dead and hundreds of businesses looted.
