South Africa - August 10, 2026 Three major mountain passes in the Eastern Cape of South Africa have been closed after heavy snowfall made the roads dangerous and left several vehicles stranded. Provincial Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose confirmed that emergency personnel are on the ground assisting motorists affected by the conditions. The closures come as the province experiences disruptive snowfall linked to a cold front and cut-off low weather system. An orange level warning for disruptive snow has been issued for parts of the Eastern Cape, including the Chris Hani District and surrounding municipalities.
