Due to the different interpretations of the lunar calendar, Muslims in Senegal celebrated the first day of Eid al-Adha on Thursday, while many others around the world marked the first day on Wednesday. Thousands gathered in the Yoff district of the capital, assembling along the beach near the tomb of Seydina Limamou Laye, founder of the order. The Layene order is a Sufi-based religious group unique to Senegal. Its members traditionally wear white during Eid and other significant occasions, a practice rooted in the belief that uniform clothing eliminates class distinctions among the faithful. The Eid al-Adha holiday commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son at God’s command, before a ram was sent as a divine substitute at the last moment. Muslims sacrifice animals in commemoration of this intervention and share the meat with the poor and their relatives.
