VARIOUS OF PALESTINIAN PEOPLE SHOPPING AT MARKET / VEGETABLES AND FRUITS AT MARKET GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - MAY 6: Residents of the Gaza Strip continue to face shortages of basic food supplies seven months after the ceasefire, amid limited access to fresh produce, rising prices and worsening poverty. Local residents said shortages were particularly severe in vegetables and fruit, which they linked to restrictions at border crossings and delays in the entry of goods. Economic conditions in Gaza have continued to deteriorate, with poverty rates reaching around 70%, leaving many families unable to meet basic needs. Residents with declining incomes have increasingly turned to damaged or expired food products waiting at border crossings because they are sold at lower prices, local sources said. Health specialists warned that consuming such products could pose serious public health risks. Mahmoud Abu Saade, a Palestinian vendor who has worked in local markets for 30 years, said products available in the market were limited and expensive, adding that prices for vegetables and fruit had risen sharply compared with previous years. He also said delays at border crossings caused products to spoil before reaching market stalls. Ayesh Subh, a Palestinian resident shopping at the market, said rising prices had made it difficult for families to secure basic necessities and noted that many residents were no longer able to afford regular shopping. Subh also pointed to high unemployment among young people and said worsening living conditions were linked to closed crossings and difficulties in bringing construction materials into Gaza following widespread destruction in the territory. International organizations have continued to face calls to increase food and humanitarian assistance to Gaza as the humanitarian situation deteriorates.
