Storyline AR glasses take on pest control in China In China, technologies like augmented reality glasses are making it easier than ever to monitor and control pest outbreaks. In east China's Nanjing City, AI-powered AR glasses let farmers and specialists identify the tiniest pests, like rice planthoppers, a 1-to-5-millimeter insect that’s nearly invisible to the naked eye. Zhang Xiaoyan, head, Plant Protection and Quarantine Station, Luhe District Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province: "With cameras, microphones, GPS positioning, and AI recognition, the system can automatically monitor the occurrence of rice planthoppers in the field. Even if you can't identify them yourself, as long as you can take a photo, you can monitor them right there in the field. Even without an internet connection, you can take photos and once you have a signal, you can upload the photos, and the system will automatically count them." The AR glasses are just part of the district's integrated surveillance system which spans all its subdistricts and towns, providing farmers and agronomists with the tools they need to manage pest and disease outbreaks. Yuan Fei, production manager, Aijin Farm: "Since we started using the smart monitoring equipment, we can see pest and disease conditions in the field in real time. And once we know what's happening, we adjust our pesticide plan and use less." Under a new national agricultural plan, China aims to boost its grain production capacity to around 725 million tons by the year 2030, while promoting greener farming and stronger food security.
