Storyline China's AI data centers find home on grasslands of Inner Mongolia Northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, with its cool climate and rich natural resources, is drawing tech companies to build data centers that can be powered by clean energy. Ulanqab city is an example. Despite having fewer than two million inhabitants, the city is home to 89 data centers. At the center operated by the ZDATA group, emergency training drills are taking place. Song Wei, on-site director, green intelligent computing center: "We are required to issue a rapid report within two minutes, verify the fault on site within five minutes, and implement a basic isolation or mitigation measure within 10 minutes." To maintain power for centers like this one and more, local authorities and the State Grid are building a dedicated power station for the data centers. Li Chunxiao, head, Ulanqab campus of Centrin Data: "We have wind turbines and photovoltaic solar panels located about 16 kilometers from our project of data center." Last year renewable electricity accounted for 60 percent of China's installed power generation capacity, exceeding the total consumption of the EU's 27 member states.
