Storyline China's AI-powered "dark lab" revolutionizes chemical testing Scientists at the Beijing Dynaflow Lab Solutions Co. are using AI to facilitate the process of testing toxic chemicals. It's the country's first "dark lab"- which means it's fully automatic and unmanned, able to operate in the dark because there are no humans involved. Inside the lab, samples of dangerous, volatile liquid are loaded, tested, analyzed and disposed of all without human intervention. There are 87 precision instruments, and 56 robots that all work in unison to complete a full testing process in just three and a half hours. He Bin, technician, Beijing Dynaflow Lab Solutions Co., Ltd.: "Behind this system is a powerful 'brain' guiding the entire equipment, including a visual recognition system that sends real-time operation data to the 'brain,' and the scheduling system takes over, finding the fastest and most efficient route for the turnover of each sample bottle at the workstation." Before the application of AI at the lab, workers had to wear goggles, gas masks, protective suits and gloves and would still face unavoidable exposure to hazardous materials. The dark lab eliminates those risks. Xue Feng, acrylonitrile analysis engineer, Shenghong Petrochemical: "The establishment of the 'dark lab' was originally intended to completely separate the human staff from the dangerous samples to eliminate the risk of direct contact." Some companies say the lab allows for significantly fewer workers, which helps save hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
