India is a Union of states and the Part I of the Indian Constitution deals with Union and its territory. Articles 1- 4 in Part I includes laws related to union of states and laws related to the establishment of the union. It also deals with laws to create, rename and alter borders of states within the union of India. A recent example of this can be seen in the creation of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh which involved changing their status within the Union of India. Recent Update on Union And Its Territories In 2019, the Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (Union Territories Merger) Bill, 2019 was tabled in Lok Sabha. The Bill calls for the Union Territories (UTs) of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu to be merged into a single UT. The Bill modifies the First Schedule to incorporate the areas of two UTs: 1. Dadra and Nagar Haveli and 2. Daman and Diu. The combined area would be known as Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. This will take effect on the date specified by the central government.
