performance, recovery, or muscle growth.

Most government-recommended dietary

intakes are designed with that in mind,

and they're there to prevent

deficiencies across the whole

population, not to optimize body

composition or gym performance. In fact,

newer guidelines are starting to

recognize that this might be on the low

side. The most recent dietary guidelines

when it comes to building muscle,

are two ways we can think about protein

intake, and the most common is total

really popular meta-analysis that I'd

like to mention. A meta-analysis is

basically a study where they analyze the

results of multiple similar studies to

get a more definite answer. The study is

by Morton and colleagues, and it

includes researchers like Brad

Schoenfeld, Eric Helms, James Krieger,

more nuanced. So, before I give that as

my final recommendation, I want to talk

about another way of thinking about

meal, not just protein per day. Protein

per meal used to be thought of as a more

useful way of looking at things because

of something called the leucine

threshold. Leucine is one of the

essential amino acids. Actually, it's a

branched-chain amino acid, and it plays

a key role in stimulating muscle protein

synthesis, which is the process your

body uses to build new muscle tissue. If

you get enough leucine in a single meal,

you can maximally stimulate muscle

any further. Research suggests that for

Finally, you may have heard somewhere

a lot of nutritionists, there's a small

grain of truth in it, but the way it's

usually explained is wrong. We do know

from controlled studies that in young,

look at what's called mechanistic data.

In other words, studies looking at the

actually works. From early research, we

protein, there is a period of time where

the muscle becomes less responsive to

another dose. This is sometimes called

the refractory period. In a lot of early

studies, this seemed to last roughly 3

idea, some researchers suggested that
