Does fructose make you gain weight?
A systematic review and meta-analysis examined what happens to body weight when people consume large amounts of fructose, including what happens when calories are kept the same versus when fructose adds extra calories to the diet.
In this video, expert nutritionist Dr Richie Kirwan breaks down the research on fructose, sugar, calories and weight gain to explain whether fructose itself causes fat gain or whether total calorie intake is the bigger factor.
Key Facts:
The systematic review included 31 calorie-matched trials involving 637 participants.
When fructose replaced other carbohydrates without increasing total calories, there was no significant increase in body weight.
The researchers also analysed 10 trials where large amounts of fructose were added on top of people's existing calorie intake.
In these higher-calorie diets, body weight increased by an average of around 0.53 kg.
The researchers concluded that this weight gain may have been caused by the additional calories rather than fructose itself.
The studies were generally small, relatively short and often of low methodological quality, so the findings should be interpreted with those limitations in mind.
FAQ:
Q: Does fructose cause weight gain?
A: When fructose replaced other carbohydrates while total calories remained similar, the analysis found no significant effect on body weight.
Q: What happened when people ate very large amounts of fructose?
A: When large doses of fructose were added on top of the existing diet and therefore increased total calorie intake, participants gained a modest amount of weight.
Q: Is fructose more fattening than other carbohydrates?
A: This analysis did not find evidence that fructose caused greater weight gain when it replaced other carbohydrates calorie for calorie.
Q: Do calories matter more than fructose for weight gain?
A: The findings suggest that excess energy intake is an important part of the relationship. Fructose increased body weight when it provided additional calories, but not when it replaced other carbohydrate calories.
