Insights with Pastor John I'm Pastor
0:05
John Moore from Popular Assembly of God
0:07
And today we're going to take a look at
0:09
baptism And uh I I'm I'm not looking at
0:13
this as
0:15
uh which way to be baptized
0:19
or
0:20
whether or not we're talking about uh it
0:25
being an ordinance of the church which
0:27
it is What I want to look at today is
0:29
the two baptisms that are
0:32
listed in the New Testament Both are
0:36
from the book of
0:38
John And
0:40
uh the first one that we're going to
0:43
look at is I I want us to come to a
0:46
greater
0:48
understanding of the difference between
0:52
John's baptism and Jesus's baptism
0:58
Now John was beyond the Jordan baptizing
1:03
unto
1:04
repentance
1:08
and understanding that what John's
1:11
baptism was You have to you have to
1:14
listen to what he said
1:22
Um he said that uh he was not the
1:28
Christ and he was in in and it starts
1:31
out in chapter one when uh first of all
1:34
John witnesses Christ and start in verse
1:37
15 It says "John bear witness of him and
1:39
cried saying This is this was he of whom
1:42
I spake he that cometh after me is
1:44
preferred before me for he was before me
1:47
and of his fullness have we all received
1:50
and grace for grace For the law was
1:53
given by Moses but grace and truth came
1:55
by Jesus Christ No man hath seen God at
1:58
any time the only begotten Son which is
2:02
in the bosom of the Father he hath
2:04
declared him." And this was the record
2:07
of John when the Jews sent priests and
2:09
Levites from Jerusalem to ask him "Who
2:12
art thou?" And he confessed and denied
2:14
not but confessed I am not the Christ
2:18
And they asked him "What What then Art
2:20
thou Elias?" And he saith "I am not."
2:23
"Art thou that prophet?" And he answered
2:25
"No." Then said they unto him Who art
2:28
thou that we may give an answer to them
2:30
that sent us What sayest thou of thyself
2:33
And he said "I am the voice of one
2:34
crying in the wilderness Make straight
2:37
the way of the Lord as said the prophet
2:39
Isaiah." And they which were sent were
2:42
of the Pharisees And they asked him and
2:44
said unto him Why baptis baptize thou
2:47
then if thou be not that Christ nor
2:49
Elias neither that pro prophet Now
2:52
listen to what John says in response
2:56
John answered them saying,"I baptize
2:58
with water but there standeth one among
3:01
you whom you know not He it is who
3:04
coming after me is preferred before me
3:07
whose shoe latched I am not worthy to
3:10
unloose." And these things were done in
3:13
uh Betha beyond Jordan where John was
3:17
baptizing And the next day John seeth
3:19
Jesus coming unto him and saith Behold
3:21
the lamb of God which taketh away the
3:23
sin of the world This is he of whom I
3:26
said "After me cometh a man which is
3:29
preferred before me for he was before me
3:32
and I knew him not but that he should be
3:35
made manifest to Israel Therefore I come
3:38
baptizing with
3:43
water." And John bear record saying "I
3:46
saw the Spirit descending from heaven
3:48
like a dove and a boat upon him and I
3:50
knew him not But he that sent me to
3:52
baptize with water the same said unto me
3:56
upon whom thou shalt see the spirit
3:58
descending and remaining on him the same
4:00
is he which baptizes with the Holy
4:04
Ghost And I saw and bear record that
4:07
this is the son of God
4:10
Now John makes it clear that his baptism
4:13
is clearly a baptism of water and it's
4:17
called John's baptism was a baptism unto
4:20
repentance And the word
4:22
repentance means to change direction or
4:26
to change one's
4:28
mind And the one of the biggest things
4:32
that John dealt with
4:36
uh in his ministry was the hypocrisy of
4:41
the scribes the Pharisees and the
4:43
priests And u he made it clear that when
4:49
they would come to him he would tell
4:50
them
4:52
uh go and bring back meat worth
4:54
repentance before he would baptize them
4:58
And if you jump over from there jump
5:01
over to John chapter 4 This is just this
5:04
is right before he goes to Samaria and
5:07
speaks to to the woman of the well It
5:10
says "When therefore the Lord knew how
5:12
the pre Pharisees had heard that Jesus
5:14
made and baptized more disciples than
5:18
John though Jesus himself baptized not
5:22
but his
5:23
disciples he left Judea and departed
5:25
again into Galilee
5:28
And what I think is so important for us
5:31
to realize
5:33
is John's
5:35
baptism was
5:38
ceremonial It was it it didn't provide
5:42
salvation It didn't it provided
5:45
repentance but not salvation Salvation
5:48
only comes one way and that's if you go
5:51
over to Romans and we will take a look
5:55
at what Paul said This is uh there isn't
5:59
a person out there who believes that you
6:02
uh that we have to confess Jesus as Lord
6:05
and Savior that doesn't believe this And
6:08
it's uh Romans 10:es 9 and 10 And if you
6:12
actually read through chapter 10 the
6:15
whole chapter Paul is talking about how
6:18
Israel rejected
6:19
Christ And this is what Paul said He
6:22
said that if thou shalt confess with th
6:25
with thy mouth the Lord
6:27
Jesus and shall believe in thy heart
6:30
that God hath raised him from the dead
6:32
thou shalt be saved For with the heart
6:35
man believeth unto righteousness and
6:37
with the mouth confession is made unto
6:40
salvation For the scripture saith
6:43
Whosoever believeth on him shall not be
6:46
ashamed For there is no difference
6:48
between the Jew and the Greek for the
6:50
same Lord over all is rich unto all that
6:53
call upon him For whosoever shall call
6:56
upon the name of the Lord shall be saved
7:00
Now this makes makes it kind of strange
7:03
for some people because they say "Well
7:04
if I if I call on Jesus that makes me
7:07
saved." No calling on Jesus is just the
7:10
beginning That's where it starts But
7:13
when you want to understand the truth of
7:16
baptism you have to understand the
7:19
difference between John's baptism which
7:21
was a ritual cleansing
7:25
uh promoting a changed lifestyle
7:29
Now notice I used the word lifestyle
7:32
there It's a changed lifestyle but not a
7:35
changed
7:36
life When Jesus comes and his baptism is
7:40
the baptism of the Holy Spirit Now one
7:43
of the things that uh in the book of
7:45
Acts 1 verse 4 Jesus this is this takes
7:50
place 40 days after the resurrection 10
7:53
days before Pentecost And here's what
7:56
Jesus tells his disciples He has them
7:59
all assembled He says "And being
8:00
assembled together with them commanded
8:02
them that they should not depart from
8:05
Jerusalem but wait for the promise of
8:08
the Father which saith he you've heard
8:10
of me." Now listen listen closely For
8:14
John John John the Baptist truly
8:17
baptized with water but ye shall be
8:21
baptized with the Holy Ghost not many
8:24
days hence fulfilling what John said
8:26
back in John chapter 1 that he truly
8:29
baptized with water but he that was
8:31
coming after him would baptize with the
8:32
Holy Ghost and with
8:34
fire When they therefore were come
8:37
together they asked him saying Lord wilt
8:39
thou at this time restore again the
8:41
kingdom to Israel And he said unto them
8:44
it is not for you to know the times or
8:46
the season which the Father hath put his
8:48
own power but ye shall receive power
8:52
after that the Holy Ghost has come upon
8:54
you and you shall be witnesses unto me
8:57
both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and
9:00
in Samaria and unto the uttermost part
9:02
of the
9:04
earth Last thing he said before he
9:06
ascended into heaven
9:09
So baptism in and of
9:13
itself does not
9:16
provide any type of it doesn't provide
9:19
salvation It doesn't provide
9:21
sanctification It's an outward
9:23
expression of an inward experience And
9:26
so we need to understand the difference
9:29
between the baptism unto repentance and
9:32
Jesus's baptism in the Holy Spirit
9:36
Jesus the word baptism means to
9:40
wash Um so John's baptism was ritual
9:45
cleansing He people were being
9:49
cleansed from the outside and Jesus made
9:52
that statement He says "Why wash you the
9:55
outside of the cup and leave the inside
9:57
dirty?"
9:58
He he told them they were like whitened
10:00
sepicurs That means these beautiful
10:02
mausoleum tombs They're all whitewashed
10:05
and painted on the outside but the
10:07
inside is full of dead men's bones And
10:10
the purpose of
10:13
Christ's
10:15
baptism is to restore life to the
10:18
spiritual man which is the true
10:21
person All of us are made
10:24
up of three parts
10:27
We have the body We have the thinking
10:29
part which we call the soul And then we
10:32
have the spirit When Adam sinned in the
10:34
garden the spirit man was cut off from
10:36
God the source of eternal life Jesus
10:40
says "Come to me all you that are weary
10:42
and heavy laden and I will give you
10:44
rest." He also says that no man cometh
10:46
unto the father but by me And what he's
10:50
saying is "Come to me
10:52
My baptism will bring your spirit man
10:55
back to life and restore fellowship
10:58
between you and the father through me
11:01
through my sacrifice my work on the
11:04
cross So baptism uh we need to
11:07
understand baptism for what it
11:10
is
11:12
When we get baptized we're making a
11:15
public
11:16
declaration that we have chosen to
11:19
follow Christ
11:20
That's what baptism
11:24
is and that's all it
11:27
is But the spirit baptism is a promise
11:32
of the father It's something Jesus said
11:34
you need this If you've ever wondered
11:37
why you have such a hard time overcoming
11:42
certain things in your
11:46
life excuse me It's because you don't
11:52
have a relationship with God based on
11:57
coming into the presence of his with his
12:00
spirit because it's his spirit he puts
12:02
in you It's what brings that spirit man
12:05
back to life And if you want more
12:09
victory if you want more
12:12
um power to overcome the power of the
12:15
enemy you need to do what uh Jude said
12:20
and what the other apostles said which
12:23
is you need to pray in the
12:27
spirit And uh you need to realize that
12:30
without that intimate relationship with
12:32
God without that time spent with God
12:36
walking into the presence of God and God
12:38
manifesting to him to you who he
12:42
is you have no power to overcome the
12:44
power of the enemy which he told you he
12:46
would give you But it requires you
12:50
coming into God's presence to receive
12:53
that power to do it And
12:57
uh all believers who have truly
13:00
confessed Jesus as Lord and Savior have
13:03
turned their lives around have access to
13:06
that Doesn't matter what what your
13:08
religious background or doctrinal
13:10
background is The one thing that remains
13:13
the
13:14
same is that we
13:17
overcome the enemy through the blood of
13:20
the lamb and the words of our testimony
13:23
and that if it's a gift from the father
13:26
to believers it's something we should be
13:30
openly
13:31
receiving because it's a gift And if you
13:34
understand the nature of gift giving if
13:36
I give you a gift let's say
13:39
Christmas and have all the gifts under
13:41
the tree and that gift's got your name
13:43
on
13:44
it but I never tell you the gift is
13:47
there or I never get the gift and give
13:50
it to you It's not a gift to you until
13:53
you actually receive it till you
13:54
actually put it into your hands So Jesus
13:58
is telling you the Holy Spirit is God's
14:00
gift to you It's yours All you have to
14:02
do is reach out and take
14:04
it It's life-changing It empowers you
14:08
for testimony Uh it empowers your
14:11
spiritual life and your walk with Christ
14:14
where you can come into God's presence
14:16
at any time and have one-on-one
14:19
conversation with God And conversation's
14:22
two-way street Remember conversation
14:25
requires sending and
14:27
receiving information That's
14:29
conversation God wants an intimate
14:31
relationship with you He wants the
14:34
sending receiving to go The only way
14:37
that you can come into God's presence
14:39
and receive that two-way conversation
14:41
with God is through the power of the
14:43
Holy Spirit within
14:46
you So I want to leave that with you
14:48
Remember John's baptism was a physical
14:51
baptism It was a baptism under
14:53
repentance which says "I'm going to
14:55
change my life I'm going to change my
14:57
life."
14:58
Jesus's baptism which is a baptism
15:01
through the Holy Spirit and and with
15:03
fire is Jesus saying "I'm going to
15:08
change your
15:10
life and give you victory over the
15:12
things that you're bound by." So keep
15:15
that in mind this week and we'll see you
15:17
guys next week Thanks
