Netflix is facing a $105 million lawsuit after the unreleased film ‘Fortitude’ was stolen from its Los Angeles office. Writer-producer Simon Afram claims Netflix mishandled a screening copy, damaging the World War II spy thriller’s chances of securing a distribution deal. An unencrypted master copy of the Nicolas Cage movie was among several hard drives stolen last month. Netflix later determined that the remaining drives were empty. The lawsuit claims Netflix refused to confirm whether it notified police about the break-in, and alleges the company rejected requests to involve the Los Angeles Police Department. Netflix stated it withheld investigation details after Afram’s lawyers demanded $165 million in what it called a “hostile attempt to extort money.” The producers argue that the theft has damaged the movie’s value because distributors must be told that an unencrypted copy was stolen, raising concerns over potential leaks.
