in this video we are going to see that
0:11
the quran contains a wealth of
0:13
information about the world of the
0:15
occult
0:16
our analysis will focus on the second
0:19
chapter of the quran known as surah
0:21
al-baqarah in particular verses 101-102
0:26
we will analyze these verses from the
0:28
perspective of history and archaeology
0:31
the verses begin by saying
0:33
and when a messenger from allah came to
0:36
them confirming that which was with them
0:38
the children of israel a party of those
0:41
who have been given the scripture
0:42
through the scripture of allah behind
0:44
their backs as if they did not know what
0:47
it contained and they followed instead
0:49
what the devils had recited during the
0:51
reign of solomon
0:53
the classical muslim exegetes ibn kathir
0:56
and tabari both explained that the quran
0:59
here is referring to a faction of jews
1:02
at the time of muhammad peace be upon
1:04
him who rejected him despite knowing he
1:07
was a messenger the quran rebukes them
1:10
for not acting upon this knowledge of
1:12
his prophethood which is contained in
1:14
their very own scriptures
1:16
they are accused of abandoning their
1:18
scriptures and instead resorting to
1:20
practicing the magic of their ancestors
1:22
from the time of solomon there are a
1:25
number of amazing insights to note here
1:27
firstly we can see that the quran makes
1:30
an important distinction between
1:32
scripture and the works of devils namely
1:34
that of magic
1:36
the quran states that a party of jews
1:39
abandoned allah's words and turned to
1:41
the magic of devils implying that their
1:44
scriptures are free of magic
1:46
if we compare the old testament with
1:48
rabbinic writings we find that this is
1:50
the case
1:51
the old testament states you shall not
1:54
permit a sorceress to live
1:57
mediums and necromancers shall surely be
1:59
put to death
2:00
let no one be found among you who
2:02
interprets omens
2:04
we can see that the old testament has a
2:06
zero tolerance approach to all forms of
2:08
magic
2:09
by comparison rabbinic texts such as the
2:12
talmud are full of occult teachings
2:14
rabbi wrote
2:16
i see in the babylonian talmud many
2:19
things which were permitted from the
2:20
realm of fortune telling incantations
2:23
and witchcraft these are innumerable
2:26
here are just some examples of occultism
2:28
in the talmud
2:29
if one wishes to see demons let him take
2:32
the afterbirth of a black shikat let him
2:35
roast it in fire and grind it to powder
2:37
and then let him put some into his eye
2:42
what is an approved amulet one that has
2:44
healed once a second time and a third
2:47
time
2:48
the course of the constellations and the
2:50
zodiac has influence as a natural law
2:52
upon the world and everything depends
2:54
upon it longevity children and finances
2:58
it's clear that the talmud promotes a
3:01
whole host of occult practices including
3:03
sorcery amulets and astrology
3:06
we've seen that these are all practices
3:08
that the old testament deems punishable
3:10
by death
3:11
scripture and rabbinic writings are
3:13
completely at odds when it comes to the
3:15
permissibility of magic just as the
3:17
quran states
3:19
another quranic insight is the fact that
3:22
the verse is addressing a group of jews
3:24
who are contemporary to the prophet
3:26
muhammad peace be upon him and making
3:28
the claim that they were following the
3:30
magic of devils from the time of solomon
3:33
given that solomon is from the 10th
3:35
century bce and the quran was revealed
3:38
in the 7th century ce this points to a
3:40
continuous magic tradition of at least
3:43
one and a half thousand years
3:45
if this really is the case then we would
3:47
expect jewish practitioners to have
3:49
mastered these dark arts over such a
3:51
long period of time
3:53
this is exactly what we find in the
3:55
world of magic
3:56
for centuries jewish mythicism such as
3:59
kabbalah
4:00
and jewish numerology known as gematria
4:03
have been fundamental to occultism
4:05
to this day anyone who is serious about
4:08
the occult must study these jewish
4:10
systems as they are considered
4:12
foundational
4:13
yet another quranic insight can be found
4:15
in the linguistics of this verse
4:18
not the word recited
4:20
devils are said to recite magic
4:22
the use of spoken incantations and
4:25
evocations are in fact a major part of
4:28
magic
4:29
madame blavatsky was a highly
4:31
influential 19th century mystic
4:34
she explained that occultists throughout
4:37
history have used symbols to convey
4:39
meaning because they feared the real
4:41
world effects of the spoken word
4:44
the religious and esoteric history of
4:47
every nation was embedded in symbols
4:50
it was never expressed in so many words
4:52
why
4:53
because such or another vibration in the
4:56
air is sure to awaken corresponding
4:58
powers union with which produces good or
5:00
bad results
5:02
the ancient egyptians held similar
5:04
beliefs about the power of the spoken
5:06
word
5:07
the commonly found phrases magic of
5:10
their mouths and spells of their
5:11
utterances show the close relationship
5:14
between speaking and magic
5:16
the two were treated as more or less
5:18
equivalent
5:19
the ancient mesopotamians also believed
5:22
that incantations had to be spoken in a
5:24
certain way in order for them to be
5:26
effective
5:28
voice can harvest the power and
5:30
knowledge contained within a name the
5:32
incantation and names contained in them
5:35
had to be pronounced in a special tone
5:36
of voice the word used to describe one
5:39
speaking in this manner lohushu is even
5:42
different from the regular verb se and
5:44
had a meaning similar to utter murmur or
5:47
chant
5:50
the next part of the verses state
5:52
it was not solomon who disbelieved but
5:55
the devil's disbelieved teaching people
5:57
magic
5:58
here the quran defends the noble prophet
6:01
solomon clearing him of the false
6:02
accusations of magic
6:04
rabbis and jewish commentators
6:06
throughout history have claimed that
6:08
solomon was a master magician
6:10
for example the talmud claims that
6:12
solomon possessed a magical ring that
6:15
was the source of his ability to control
6:16
devils
6:18
the talmud narrates the following story
6:21
the demon asmodius said to solomon give
6:24
me your ring with god's name engraved on
6:26
it and i will show you my strength
6:29
solomon gave him his ring
6:32
asmodius swallowed the ring and grew
6:34
until he placed one wing in the heaven
6:36
and one wing on the earth
6:39
he threw solomon a distance of 400
6:41
parasangs i.e over one thousand miles
6:45
with solomon deposed from the throne as
6:47
modius took his place
6:49
while asmodius was impersonating solomon
6:52
he demanded that solomon's mother engage
6:54
in sexual intercourse with him
6:56
once the jewish council heard this they
6:58
understood that this was an impostor and
7:00
not actually solomon they brought
7:02
solomon and gave him a ring on which the
7:04
name of god was carved when solomon
7:06
entered as modius saw him and fled
7:10
followers of judaism need to realize
7:12
that such rabbinic teachings actually go
7:14
against the old testament which we've
7:16
already seen strictly prohibits all
7:19
forms of magic rabbis have therefore
7:21
created contradictions within the
7:23
religion itself the quran clarifies that
7:26
a magical trinket was not the source of
7:28
solomon's power rather allah himself was
7:31
the source of solomon's miraculous
7:33
ability to subjugate devils and control
7:36
animals
7:37
solomon's abilities are no different to
7:39
the miracles that allah bestowed upon
7:41
other israelite prophets such as moses
7:44
we can see that the quran resolves the
7:46
confusion that is present within judaism
7:50
the next part of the verses state
7:52
teaching people magic and that which was
7:55
revealed to the two angels at babylon
7:58
here the quran makes the claim that
8:00
babylon was a major epicenter for magic
8:03
thanks to modern archaeological
8:05
discoveries we now know that babylonians
8:08
laid the foundation for magical
8:09
practices used all around the world
8:12
for example astrology is one of the core
8:14
sciences in magic today
8:17
the babylonians were the first people to
8:19
apply myths to constellations and
8:21
describe the 12 signs of the zodiac
8:24
enuma anu and lille is a series of
8:26
babylonian tablets that represent the
8:28
oldest astrological writings in the
8:30
world
8:32
the conquest of asia by alexander the
8:34
great exposed the greeks to babylonian
8:37
culture
8:38
they took the babylonian system of
8:40
astrology developed it and spread it all
8:42
around the world
8:44
another claim being made here by the
8:46
quran is that the magic of the jews at
8:48
the time of prophet muhammad peace be
8:50
upon him had its roots in ancient
8:53
babylon a number of historical evidences
8:56
both textual and archaeological support
8:58
this claim
8:59
the talmud is a written compilation of
9:02
rabbinic discussions that comprise the
9:04
foundation of jewish law
9:06
two different versions of the talmud
9:07
were produced the jerusalem talmud and
9:10
the babylonian talmud
9:12
with the former produced in the land of
9:14
israel and the latter in babylon
9:16
when contrasting the two scholars have
9:18
observed that the babylonian talmud is
9:21
comparatively full of references to
9:23
demons and magic
9:25
a perfect example that illustrates this
9:27
difference can be found in the old
9:28
testament book of ecclesiastes
9:31
i acquired male and female singers and a
9:34
harem as well
9:35
compare the babylonian and jerusalem
9:37
talmudic commentaries on this verse
9:40
here in babylonia they interpreted these
9:42
words in the following manner male
9:44
demons and female demons
9:49
in the land of israel they said that
9:51
these words are referring to carriages
9:55
this supports the quran's claims about
9:57
the babylonian roots of jewish magic as
10:00
those jews who were exiled to babylon
10:02
were exposed to and influenced by its
10:05
magical culture
10:06
we can see this influence reflected in
10:09
the content of the babylonian talmud
10:11
from an archaeological perspective the
10:13
earliest known examples of jewish
10:15
mystical texts are babylonian
10:17
incantation balls
10:19
this further supports the quran's claim
10:21
that jews first learnt magic at babylon
10:24
professor shawl shackhead wrote
10:26
the jewish aramaic balls also have the
10:29
earliest examples of hecalot or jewish
10:32
mystical texts
10:34
you also find names jewish rabbis and
10:36
demons as well as information about
10:38
jewish legal practice
10:41
moreover the vast majority of
10:42
incantation balls that have been
10:44
excavated in the babylonian region are
10:46
written in jewish aramaic an essay on
10:49
magic balls states that
10:51
the largest number of known incantation
10:53
balls are written in jewish aramaic by
10:56
jewish scribes
10:57
mandaean balls are the second most
10:59
numerous only then followed by balls in
11:01
syriac a handful of balls in arabic and
11:04
persian are also known
11:06
this shows that babylonian jews were
11:08
heavily involved in magic historians
11:11
even go so far as to suggest that they
11:13
achieved a mastery of the dark arts
11:16
professor joseph nave wrote
11:18
magic may have been considered to some
11:20
extent a jewish specialization
11:24
the next part of the verses state
11:26
the two angels at babylon haroot and
11:29
marut
11:30
but they do not teach anyone unless they
11:32
say we are a trial so do not disbelieve
11:35
by practicing magic
11:37
here the quran is making the claim that
11:39
two angels haroot
11:41
descended at babylon
11:43
these angels are said to have been sent
11:45
by allah and given knowledge of magic as
11:48
a means of testing mankind
11:50
is there any historical evidence for the
11:52
existence of the angels haroot or
11:56
there just happens to be some striking
11:58
parallels between the angel marut and an
12:01
entity known as marduk marduk was an
12:03
ancient mesopotamian deity who was the
12:06
chief god of the city of babylon
12:08
marduk is the name commonly associated
12:10
with the deity in modern times however
12:13
it was actually pronounced marutok in
12:15
babylonian
12:16
scholars believe that this word is
12:18
derived from the sumerian amarutu
12:21
the quranic mahroot may simply be an
12:24
arabised version of the babylonian
12:26
marutok and sumerian amarutu
12:29
marduk also happens to have been
12:31
associated with magic as far back as the
12:33
old babylonian period
12:35
during babylonian magic rituals priests
12:38
known as asipu would impersonate marduk
12:41
a tablet reads the asipu is the image of
12:44
amarutu
12:46
marduk was glorified as the greatest of
12:49
exorcists a tablet reads upon the
12:52
utterance of amarutu exorcist among the
12:55
gods
12:56
a cylinder seal that calls upon marduk
12:59
served as an amulet it states by the
13:02
order of amarutu may he who is provided
13:04
with this seal be in good health
13:07
marduk was also commonly invoked to ward
13:10
off demons
13:11
the urdug hull writings are a series of
13:14
16 tablets consisting of incantations
13:16
for protection against evil demons
13:19
several of the tablets are in fact hymns
13:21
to marduk for example
13:24
by the invocation of marduk ruler of
13:26
babylon may whatever evil be removed
13:29
from the body of the man
13:30
may the evil otoku demon an evil aloo
13:33
demon stand aside
13:36
marduk was even called the magician of
13:38
the gods
13:39
note in the following inscription that
13:41
marduk is referred to by the name
13:43
asalouhi
13:44
before the spell of assalohi the
13:47
magician of the gods
13:49
the parallels between marduk and the
13:51
angel marut go beyond their names and
13:53
magical associations
13:55
the supreme god aya was believed to be
13:58
the ultimate source of marduk's
13:59
knowledge
14:01
in the following babylonian text marduk
14:03
is said to consult afa advice
14:06
may my father the great lord ayer show
14:09
you the right and the master plan of
14:11
aya's wisdom
14:12
he marduk was searching
14:14
he was searching there for the supreme
14:16
word of aya's command
14:19
we can see that the relationship between
14:21
marduk and ayah is similar to that of
14:23
the angel marut and allah with marduk
14:26
and marut both being subservient and
14:29
receiving knowledge from the higher
14:31
authorities aya and allah
14:33
even the name of the city of babylon has
14:36
connotations with the quranic angels
14:38
the word babylon comes from the ancient
14:41
mesopotamian babilim which means gate of
14:44
the gods
14:45
this could be a reference to its
14:46
importance as the site where angels
14:48
brought magic to mankind
14:50
hence it was seen as a kind of gateway
14:52
to receiving wisdom from above
14:54
there is in fact a creation myth known
14:56
as
14:58
in which marduk is said to have
14:59
commanded the building of babylon
15:01
construct babylon whose building you
15:03
have requested let its brickwork be
15:05
fashioned
15:06
now you may be wondering how is it
15:08
possible that the angel marut was
15:10
transformed into the babylonian god
15:13
marduk
15:14
mankind has a tendency to defy mortals
15:17
this has been the norm throughout
15:19
history with heroes and people of great
15:21
importance being taken as objects of
15:23
worship an obvious example is the
15:25
christian elevation of jesus from human
15:27
messiah to god incarnate
15:30
with regards to marduk historians
15:32
acknowledge that his origins are
15:34
shrouded in mystery the scholar daniel
15:37
block wrote that
15:38
the ultimate origins of marduk remain a
15:40
mystery
15:42
the surviving historical records do
15:44
indicate that marduk greatly grew in
15:46
stature over time
15:48
the babylonian epic enuma elish
15:50
chronicles the rise of marduk from hero
15:53
to king of the gods marduk is even said
15:56
to have taken on 50 names and attributes
15:59
for us under whatever name he might be
16:01
called he is our god
16:03
so gather round and let us all call him
16:06
by all his fifty names
16:09
as professor marcum geller puts it
16:11
it is clear that the principal divine
16:13
authority authenticating the power of
16:15
incantations was aya god of wisdom whose
16:18
role was primary
16:20
one of the innovations of odok hull was
16:22
the increased centrality of marduk as
16:25
the main god of healing independent of
16:27
ayah and no longer acting as aya's
16:29
representative at least three tablets of
16:32
a doghole focused primarily on marduk's
16:35
role as the chief protagonist which is a
16:37
major departure from his traditional
16:39
role as aya's assistant
16:42
what's incredible is that this
16:44
information about the angel marut and
16:46
its links to babylon and magic is unique
16:48
to the quran it's not mentioned anywhere
16:51
in the bible or rabbinic texts such as
16:53
the talmud
16:55
now the god marduk is mentioned once in
16:57
the bible however very little
16:59
information is provided and it has no
17:01
association with magic or angels
17:05
the final part of the verses state
17:07
and yet they learn from them that by
17:09
which they cause separation between a
17:11
man and his wife
17:13
and the people learn what harms them and
17:15
does not benefit them
17:16
but the children of israel certainly
17:18
knew that whoever purchased the magic
17:20
would not happen here after any share
17:22
and wretched is that for which they sold
17:24
themselves if they only knew
17:26
here the quran tells us that the angels
17:29
brought a new type of knowledge
17:30
something very powerful that can cause a
17:32
husband and wife to separate
17:35
now the quran does not go into detail
17:37
about the exact nature of the magic that
17:38
descended however notice the mention of
17:41
the word purchased the quran could be
17:43
alluding to the transactional nature of
17:45
interactions between magicians and gen
17:48
indeed a common thread that runs through
17:51
all magic traditions is the concept of
17:53
working with spiritual entities in order
17:55
to obtain some worldly benefit or cause
17:57
harm to others
17:59
the magician does something for a jinn
18:01
such as praising it or offering a
18:03
sacrifice and in return the jinn
18:05
provides a service for the magician
18:07
also note the mention of the
18:09
consequences of engaging in magic the
18:11
quran issues the severe warning that it
18:14
is at the cost of one's hereafter
18:16
the magician quite literally has to sell
18:18
their soul in order for the jinn to
18:20
comply
18:22
the reality is that in order to reach
18:24
the higher levels a magician must commit
18:26
the greatest of evils which is
18:28
demonstrated in their philosophy and
18:30
morality
18:31
magicians refer to the systems they use
18:33
as the left-hand path
18:35
conventional religion is referred to as
18:37
the right-hand path
18:39
note what this magician has to say about
18:41
islam and the right-hand path in a few
18:43
terms what do you mean by the left-hand

this distinction between the left and

india
19:44
the left hand path is based on two main
19:46
principles

19:53
dependence on god followers of the

left-hand path seek to become god-like
19:57
the conventional acts of disbelief that
19:59
magicians take part in such as calling
20:01
upon idols and worshiping the jinn are
20:03
bad enough but the left hand path takes
20:06
things to an extreme it reaches new
20:08
heights of blasphemy with the magician
20:10
seeking godhood in themselves
20:12
the second principle of the left-hand
20:14
path is challenging normative
