Mervin Mayo: Gospel's R&B Rebel Shakes Up the Game 🔥 | SWAY’S UNIVERSE

0:00
man come on let's clap it up for this
0:03
man he's back yes sir Mike mes he said
0:06
he will return and so glad he did and
0:09
when he came here there was a Divine
0:11
moment that took place and when I when I
0:14
step out in the streets in the
0:16
public there's not another clip from
0:19
this show that people bring up more than
0:21
the moment that mvin Mayo came on this
0:23
show it's true and they and one of the
0:25
things that blows me away every time
0:28
when they talk about you singing live on
0:30
this show is how great we sounded
0:32
together when I harmonized with you did
0:34
you get
0:37
that here
0:39
man wow so I ask for
0:43
forgiveness but it was amazing because
0:46
the one of the things I've always wanted
0:48
to introduce or or really uh support is
0:53
that the fact that in our community
0:56
where hip hop comes from we didn't we
0:58
weren't monolithic we didn't listen to
1:00
one form of music and other different
1:04
forms of Music informed hip hop you know
1:07
we know that Soul did you know all these
1:08
different genres but so did gospel right
1:12
and so it was important to me to show
1:14
the world how the two intermix and it's
1:17
like a perfect combination if you put it
1:20
together properly and so I'm curious to
1:23
did you first of all mvin Mayo is here I
1:26
appreciate you coming on this day I
1:28
appreciate you having me thank you man
1:29
you brought amazing Queen with you I
1:31
bring it with me everywhere I go I know
1:33
that's right and them matching F coats
1:35
man a never seen nothing like that I
1:38
said a blue fur what kind of animal is
1:40
that that's Fox oh is it damn a Blue Fox
1:44
I like that did you get any approached
1:46
by people who weren't fans initially and
1:48
saw that clip I did my um my YouTube
1:52
when I when hit the ceiling my YouTube
1:54
my Instagram and and people say you know
1:56
I I I I don't listen to gospel but I I
1:59
heard you interview on the sway show and
2:01
um and now I'm listening to gospel and
2:03
you know and you just did some things
2:04
and I'm like man this so I reached an
2:06
audience that I wouldn't normally
2:08
reaching so this platform this this
2:11
platform it did God did it God did it
2:14
God did it God did it yeah but I think
2:17
you know I went to see uh Kirk Franklin
2:19
after that right and I saw him in DC and
2:23
uh just the most hospitable man you want
2:25
to meet and you know Fred Hammond was
2:28
there all these different Legends yand
2:29
was there and we went to the back and
2:32
he's he was so like Curious and anxious
2:36
to know what did I think of his show MH
2:38
and I was like are you kidding me this
2:39
like the best concert I think I ever
2:41
been to like top three and he was so
2:43
concerned he said I know those people
2:46
and we are in choir but I'm trying to
2:48
reach these other audiences right right
2:51
how do you feel about that that's my
2:52
goal um just like I did a remix um um uh
2:56
go go for God did it and of course I
2:58
knew I was going to get you know you
3:00
selling out you doing it but I'm like if
3:01
I don't reach the young people or the
3:04
people that's interested in this type of
3:06
music then who will and so I have to
3:08
step out you know and get in my get out
3:10
of my comfort zone to bring them in and
3:12
so I can take the criticism I can take
3:14
the heat because I know my God so I
3:15
don't really care what you think about
3:17
me I'm trying to bring souls to Christ
3:18
there you go by any means necessary
3:20
selling out who though but you know how
3:23
Christian people are church people you
3:25
know um a lot of people didn't even they
3:27
thought God did it was too secular um W
3:30
whoa yeah yeah I think it's just the uh
3:33
just the um the music you know uh it's
3:35
not traditional Dr the production like
3:38
to mixes it's not like traditional organ
3:41
church music and so it's like you know
3:42
you're doing too much and I'm like thank
3:44
you that's that's my goal to do too much
3:47
cuz the music genre has to expand and
3:49
grow right if you want to pollinate in
3:51
different demographics if it stays
3:52
stagnant it dies you know and you're
3:55
still a creative so you're still like
3:58
able you have permission to be
3:59
imaginative and to explore and to
4:02
experiment my background is is R&B
4:05
anyway and so uh I'm I most of my music
4:09
I come from R&B I used to sing a group
4:11
R&B group and so I still have that R&B
4:14
style but I'm just praising God with
4:16
that R&B style so you just you have to
4:18
get used to it that's it how do you
4:21
determine whether something is a
4:24
critique that you should just you know
4:27
kind of shake off or is actual feedback
4:30
that you should consider well you know
4:32
what I don't even read um comments like
4:36
talking about it
4:38
um my goal is only to reach God's people
4:41
and so I get a lot of negative comments
4:45
and I get a lot of positive comments you
4:47
know um my manager he gets upset about a
4:49
Sur from God's glory music he gets upset
4:51
man did you read s s I'm like no you I
4:55
don't care what the people think my goal
4:57
is I only have one goal to reach God's
4:59
people you know that's it and I think
5:02
that was that yeah answer your question
5:03
mvin Mayo was here 888 742 3345 I didn't
5:06
know you and Mike were related Mike Muse
5:08
oh yeah no no we're not related okay I
5:11
asked him before he walked in uh did he
5:13
know my cousin um Alfred Johnson who was
5:16
uh part of the sheriff's department in
5:17
Richmond so my family is based in
5:19
Richmond and I do know him I know but we
5:22
cousins
5:23
now espe ballhead ball I I do have a
5:27
question for you though I'm actually
5:28
kind of surprised to hear
5:30
that you did receive such push back and
5:32
I'm just curious do you think it's
5:34
segmented based upon race and culture
5:36
because a lot of other music right now
5:38
is so I guess if you want to say secular
5:41
or inspirational right I'm think about
5:43
Maverick city um I'm thinking about a
5:45
lot of other music that so I'm curious
5:48
about is there a difference in
5:50
Domination right like Baptist
5:52
Pentecostal I don't think so you know
5:54
what I think it is originally when I um
5:57
when I when I went um viral when I
5:59
started started doing a lot I was
6:00
singing like worship songs slow worship
6:04
songs praise songs and then U once I
6:06
started getting a little bit more
6:08
attention the people saying oh now
6:09
you're doing this hip hop that's not
6:11
what that's not what what what stirred
6:13
me to you it was your praise and worship
6:16
but now you're doing this and you know
6:17
and that's where the sellout you know
6:19
you sold out but that's not it I'm just
6:20
trying to reach everybody I'm trying to
6:22
reach the young people and I don't feel
6:23
like I have to explain myself so when
6:25
they say those comments All I say is God
6:27
did it you know that's it why why why
6:30
are people so critical in in that genre
6:34
man like that's supposed to be the place
6:35
where there's no judgment right yeah
6:38
that something why that's why you get
6:40
the most judgment how do you explain
6:42
that you don't and that's that's why a
6:44
lot of young people are not coming to
6:46
the church that's why because of that
6:48
type of judgment but what it's not the
6:50
young people it's the people that's been
6:52
around for 60 and 70 years that are not
6:54
willing to change you know this is the
6:56
way my grandma and my granddad did it so
6:59
this is the way we're going to do it but
7:00
everything has to change you know and um
7:03
and they just it's hard for them to
7:04
accept change but that's where I come in
7:08
at you know um and like you like I I
7:10
don't read my comments I don't really
7:13
care say man yeah yeah I get that man so
7:16
uh what you eat today brother what that
7:18
meal first meal of the day is for you
7:19
man today what's your regimen I know
7:21
that you keep you stay in great shape
7:23
man oatmeal okay you still you still
7:25
eating that slave food huh slave stick
7:28
to your ribs huh
7:32
Virginia
7:34
thing blueberry and cranberry I mix it
7:36
together that's what you miss every
7:37
morning for breakfast and coffee and
7:40
that's oatmeal and coffee oatmeal and
7:42
coffee list so we got this young man
7:44
Devante AKA young nav young Na and um he
7:48
he flew in from Iowa with his amazing
7:50
mom star who's one of the big one of our
7:52
big citizens uh here who supported us
7:54
over all the years right go and he's
7:57
this his first time in New York he's 11
7:59
on 12 and now he's going to ask you a
8:01
question okay yep
8:04
um wait hold on one you got it okay go
8:06
ahead um what's your um most popular
8:11
song called my most popular song right
8:13
now is is God Did It I'mma listen to
8:15
that however um in this place it's it's
8:19
it's oh man it's doing his thing it's
8:22
doing his thing yeah yeah okay but God
8:24
did it is the one that that that reaches
8:26
all genres you know what I mean and uh
8:28
in this place reaches it's reaching
8:30
every it's I'm averaging 600,000 strings
8:34
a week wow yeah wow that's amazing
8:37
around of Applause what's about what's
8:39
it about uh in this place it's just
8:41
about um in this place could be in your
8:44
spiritual realm it could be in the
8:45
church it could be wherever you are but
8:47
as long as you have god with you there's
8:50
healing in this place there's there's
8:51
Deliverance there's there's um um
8:54
there's everything that you need is as
8:56
long as God is with you it's it's in
8:58
this place and uh it actually was
9:00
supposed to be an intro uhhuh and to my
9:03
to my my my album and it just took over
9:06
the whole album because it's not it's
9:08
not like a Verse Chorus Verse Bridge
9:11
chorus you know what I mean yeah it's
9:12
just like a intro and it's just I just
9:15
praise and worship through the entire
9:17
time I'm going get a caller real quick
9:19
who uh says do she listens to God did it
9:21
every day Kim what up Kim W hey

9:39
in the morning wow wow you um and when I
9:43
say that it is one of my go-tos in the
9:47
morning and when I'm getting up getting
9:49
myself together um making decisions
9:52
different things like that uh I want to
9:55
say one thing to this young this young

10:00
