Feb 20, 2025
Many believers, I included have quoted several verses from 2 Corinthians 10, especially this portion of verse 5, “...and take every thought captive to obey Christ,”. I used this verse as a command as if I had to take every polluted thought of mine captive to obey Christ. I don’t know how some of you have personally applied this verse to your life but it’s imperative that we really capture Paul’s message as he was writing this letter to the Corinthian church under the tutelage of the Holy Spirit. I'll invite you to watch the video above in its entirety. Scripture References: 2 cor 10:3-5 2 cor 10:1-2 2 cor 10:10 Acts 17:16-32

hello good morning this is taiva at
0:02
highest.com
0:03
and today we're going to take a look at
0:05
uh second corinthians 10
0:07
verse 3 to 5. and i'm going to give you
0:10
a quick introduction
0:12
and then we are going to look at the
0:13
passage itself okay
0:15
so i'm sure a lot of you guys have
0:19
uh quoted several verses from second
0:22
corinthians
0:23
especially verse five and i've quoted it
0:26
and
0:26
and it reads like this and take every
0:29
thought
0:30
captive to obey christ so i use this
0:33
verse
0:34
as a command as if i had to take my
0:36
polluted thought
0:38
captive to obey christ and i don't know
0:41
how some of you guys have used
0:43
uh this version and personally applied
0:45
it to your life
0:46
but it is imperative that we truly
0:48
understand what paul
0:50
was communicating to the corinthian
0:52
church under the holy spirit on tutelage
0:55
when he was writing this letter
0:56
so this is what we're going to be
0:58
looking at today so
0:59
uh the first thing we're going to do
1:01
we're going to read the passage
1:02
understand the background
1:03
and then get into all the the good stuff
1:07
so let's do that
1:10
now first let's uh read verse
1:13
three to five okay scripture says in
1:16
second corinthians tense verse three to
1:18
five
1:19
for though we walk in the flesh we are
1:22
not waging war
1:23
according to the flesh for the weapons
1:26
of our warfare
1:28
are not of the flesh but they have
1:30
divine power
1:31
to destroy strongholds we destroy
1:34
arguments and every lofty opinion
1:38
raised against the knowledge of god and
1:41
take
1:42
every thought captive to obey christ
1:45
now first we need to understand why paul
1:48
wrote those uh verse those those two
1:51
like those words up there
1:53
so we're gonna look at verse one and two
1:54
of second corinthians
1:56
10 okay so i'm gonna exit this and we're
1:59
gonna go to second corinthians 10
2:01
verse one to two now he says here
2:04
i call myself and treat you
2:07
by the meekness and gentleness of christ
2:10
i
2:11
am humbled when face to face with you
2:14
but bold
2:15
towards you when i'm away i beg of you
2:17
that when i'm present
2:18
i may not have to show boldness with
2:21
such confidence as i count on showing
2:23
against some
2:24
who suspect us of walking according to
2:27
the flesh
2:28
so you kind of have an idea what's going
2:30
on here
2:31
right there were basically people that
2:34
were questioning
2:35
paul's authority like they they kind of
2:39
felt like they could talk about him in
2:42
such a
2:42
light manner almost disrespectful
2:46
okay they were questioning his ministry
2:49
and they were questioning what kind of
2:52
authority that paul had
2:54
and and you all know every letter of
2:57
paul most of his letters when he started
2:59
the letters he he he starts with this
3:01
this appellation he goes
3:03
paul an apostle of christ jesus by the
3:06
will of god
3:08
okay most of paul's letters started that
3:11
way
3:12
that's for a reason because he wanted to
3:13
establish who he was
3:15
he wasn't just self-made he didn't make
3:18
himself an apostle he didn't just
3:20
decide to be an apostle but he
3:22
specifically said
3:24
paul an apostle of christ jesus
3:27
by the will of god so god appointed paul
3:30
to be an apostle so paul didn't just
3:32
make himself an apostle or a teacher
3:35
so he was actually backed up by god
3:38
himself
3:39
that's what he was he wanted his
3:41
audience to understand that's the first
3:42
thing
3:43
so even though paul said these things
3:46
there were troublemakers
3:47
in the corinthian church that went as
3:49
far as saying that paul's letters were
3:52
like they used this word like in first
3:54
and second corinthians 10 10
3:56
his letters are worthy and strong but
3:58
his bodily presence
4:00
is weak and his speech is of no account
4:03
this is the kind of disrespectful things
4:06
they said about paul
4:07
so they wanted to discredit paul and
4:09
consequently take
4:10
his letters and exhortations lightly and
4:13
that could lead to a serious problem
4:15
like in the whole congregation like
4:17
when you allow stuff like this to happen
4:21
it can it can become like cancerous like
4:23
all it does is one or two people to
4:25
spread this kind of
4:27
bad ideas and thoughts and next thing
4:29
you know
4:30
everybody begins to think like like like
4:32
this and then
4:33
what happens is the entire church
4:35
becomes polluted
4:37
so and and notice how these guys
4:40
attacked his manliness with the sole
4:42
intention of questioning
4:43
and discrediting his authority that's
4:46
what they wanted to do
4:48
and paul wasn't going to have that
4:49
saying we're going to see how
4:51
paul came back what kind of wisdom he
4:54
used and we are going to look at that
4:57
so and this is paul's response he says
5:00
for though we walk in the flesh we are
5:03
not
5:04
waging war according to the flesh for
5:07
the weapons of our warfare are not of
5:09
the flesh but have divine
5:11
power to destroy strongholds we destroy
5:14
arguments and every lofty opinion
5:18
raised against the knowledge of god and
5:21
we take
5:22
every thought captive to obey christ
5:25
so paul when he initially wrote this
5:27
letter and he wrote those
5:28
uh three to five those verses in second
5:31
corinthians 10s
5:32
he was actually given an answer to those
5:34
people that were questioning
5:36
his authority as an apostle okay he goes
5:39
for though we walk in the flesh
5:40
we are not waging war according to the
5:42
flesh paul is basically saying that even
5:45
though he and his companions are humans
5:48
they do not use human means arguments or
5:52
opinions
5:52
to engage in any battle that come their
5:55
way
5:56
in this case it was the attack on the
5:58
authority of power
5:59
so he gives the reasons for his
6:01
statement in verse 3
6:03
by following it with verse 4. he gives
6:06
the means of his uh battle like
6:09
how does he fight what kind of weapons
6:11
he use and that's what he talks about in
6:12
verse four
6:13
he goes for the weapons of our warfare
6:16
are not of the flesh
6:18
but they have divine power to destroy
6:21
strongholds
6:22
he describes the origin and power of the
6:25
means that he and his companions in the
6:27
faith
6:28
use to engage in battle the means are of
6:31
god
6:32
that's the that's the uh the they are
6:35
rich
6:36
they're the means the weapons they are
6:38
of god they come from god
6:40
and then because they come from god they
6:42
have divine
6:44
power and the divine power of god to
6:47
destroy
6:48
and bring to nothing strongholds these
6:50
weapons
6:51
and means do not find their roots in
6:53
humans cleverness
6:55
philosophies and ideologies they are
6:57
rooted in god's character
6:59
and have god's power attached to them
7:03
that's what paul is saying
7:04
and he goes on to describe what the
7:06
strongholds and the strongholds are in
7:08
verse five so first thing he wants to
7:11
say listen we don't fight like every
7:14
other human being
7:15
we don't use human means we don't use
7:18
humans argument
7:19
we don't use human philosophies we don't
7:21
use cleverness we don't use
7:23
that kind of stuff to engage in battle
7:26
because
7:26
even though we are we humans we do not
7:29
fight like other people do
7:31
we don't use those arguments we're not
7:32
trying to get clever because the weapons
7:35
that we use
7:36
and the means that we use have divine
7:39
power
7:39
because they come from god they are
7:42
god's
7:43
thoughts god's argument and they have
7:45
god's
7:46
power attached to them so that's what
7:49
paul is saying
7:50
and the the power of god can destroy
7:53
strongholds
7:54
and then he goes on to describe what the
7:56
strongholds are so we're going to look
7:58
at the strongholds in the next
8:00
um slide what are the strongholds and
8:03
let's look at verse 5.
8:05
so these are the strong votes with
8:06
destroy arguments
8:08
and every lofty opinion raised
8:11
against the knowledge of god and we take
8:14
every thought
8:16
captive to obey christ so
8:19
what are the strongholds the strongholds
8:21
are arguments and
8:22
arrogant opinions that cloud people's
8:25
understanding
8:26
or knowledge of god they find their
8:28
roots in
8:29
human reasoning and stand high and lofty
8:32
like a fortress
8:33
opposing any entry that might lead to
8:36
the knowledge of god
8:37
they can't be destroyed by mere like
8:40
human reasoning but only by the power of
8:42
god
8:43
through god's own reasoning once those
8:46
arguments are
8:47
described in the form of a fortress are
8:49
destroyed
8:51
the thoughts behind them like the
8:53
prisoners are exposed
8:54
and then those thoughts are taken
8:56
captive to obey god
8:58
basically what this is saying is this
8:59
when the argument of the opponent of god
9:01
is destroyed
9:02
he or she has no other alternative but
9:05
to submit himself or herself to the
9:07
truth
9:08
found in jesus so paul was basically
9:11
saying to the people
9:13
listen you are not fighting against me
9:16
you are fighting against god himself i'm
9:18
just a messenger
9:20
but what you don't understand is the
9:22
power behind me
9:23
is not me but the power behind me is god
9:26
himself
9:27
so and this is the power behind paul's
9:30
weapons
9:31
and we're going to see paul in action in
9:33
athens
9:34
to fully understand this passage okay so
9:37
we're going to look at what paul did
9:38
when he went to athens in the aria
9:40
progress
9:40
so i'm going to actually play this and
9:44
i'm going to
9:44
go first let's let's go to acts
9:48
17 and we are going to play this thing
9:50
so i'm gonna play it
9:52
and then so what i'm going to do now is
9:55
i'm going to read
9:56
these sections of acts 17 we're going to
9:58
read from acts
10:00
17 verse 16 to 34. i did not want to
10:03
read this but
10:04
i'm going to have to read it so please
10:06
follow with me i'm going to go extremely
10:08
slow
10:09
and we are going to read the section so
10:11
paul is in athens
10:12
okay and i'm picking it up from acts
10:16
16 out of verse 16. now
10:19
while paul was waiting for them at
10:21
athens
10:22
his spirit was provoked within him as he
10:25
saw that the city was full of idols
10:27
so he reasoned in the synagogue with the
10:30
jews and the devout
10:32
persons and in the marketplace every day
10:35
with those who happen to be there
10:37
some of the epicurean and historic
10:39
philosophers also conversed with him
10:42
and some said what does this babbler
10:45
wish to say
10:47
others said he seems to be a preacher of
10:50
foreign divinities
10:52
and that's because he was preaching
10:53
jesus and the resurrection
10:56
and they took him and brought him to the
10:57
areopagus saying
10:59
may we know what this new teaching is
11:02
that you are presenting
11:04
for you bring some strange things to our
11:06
ears and we wish to know
11:08
therefore what these things mean now all
11:10
the athenians
11:11
and the foreigners who lived there would
11:14
spend their time in nothing except
11:16
telling or hearing something new
11:19
now let's read paul's address
11:23
so paul standing in the midst of the
11:26
aria progress said men of athens
11:29
are perceived that in every way you are
11:31
very religious
11:33
for surpass along and observed the
11:35
object of your worship
11:37
are found also an altar with this
11:39
inscription to the unknown god
11:42
while therefore you worship us unknown
11:44
this
11:45
i proclaim to you the god who made
11:48
the whole world and everything in it
11:50
being lord of heaven and earth
11:52
does not live in temples made by men nor
11:55
is he served by human hands as though he
11:58
needed
11:58
anything since he himself gives to all
12:01
mankind
12:02
life and breath and everything
12:05
and he made from one man every nation of
12:08
mankind
12:09
to live on all the face of the earth
12:11
having determined
12:13
a lot of periods and the boundaries of
12:15
their dwelling place
12:16
that they should seek god and perhaps
12:18
feel their way toward him
12:20
and find him yet he is actually not far
12:23
from each one of us
12:24
for in him we live and move and have our
12:28
being
12:29
as even some of your own poets have said
12:31
for we are indeed
12:32
his of spring being then god's offspring
12:36
we ought not to think that the divine
12:38
being is like gold
12:40
or silver or stone an image formed by
12:43
the art and imagination of man
12:45
the times of ignorance god overlooked
12:48
but now he commands
12:49
all people everywhere to repent because
12:52
he has fixed a day
12:54
on which he will judge the whole world
12:56
in righteousness
12:57
by man whom he has appointed and of this
13:00
he has given assurance to all by raising
13:03
him from the dead
13:05
now when they heard of the resurrection
13:07
of the dead some
13:08
mocked but others said we will hear you
13:11
again about this
13:13
so paul went out from their midst but
13:15
some men joined him and believed
13:17
among whom also were initials the arepa
13:20
guide and a woman named davories
13:22
and others with them so now i'm gonna go
13:25
back here
13:26
and let's present so basically
13:30
i basically set the stage for you
13:34
like paul goes to athens he sees that he
13:37
walks through the city and he sees that
13:39
the whole place is
13:40
is given to idolatry so his spirit is
13:42
troubled within him
13:43
so he goes to the areopagus and he gives
13:48
some kind of a speech there to defend
13:49
his case
13:51
so among the least leading ideologies
13:54
and philosophies there were the
13:56
epicurean and historic philosophers and
13:59
their lifestyles and ideologies were
14:02
rooted in men's effort or men's ways
14:05
they were putting a lot of emphasis on
14:06
man's meritorious achievement that's
14:09
basically the historic philosophers
14:10
they were just like elevating man's
14:14
self-achievement righteousness to the
14:16
level of god
14:17
and the epicurean whose lives were
14:19
centered around pleasure
14:21
they were eleven men's sensual needs
14:23
again above god's laws
14:25
and there were many other religious like
14:27
practices represented
14:29
there they had like some form of
14:30
godliness but they were just
14:32
mere like human inventions so this is
14:34
what paul was against but as he
14:36
mentioned in second corinthians
14:38
10 verse 3 to 5 the means he used to
14:42
argue his point
14:43
were centered on god's wisdom and they
14:45
had divine
14:46
power to break down falsehood and sue
14:49
the truth
14:50
in order to take uh thoughts captives to
14:52
obey christ
14:53
now among the captives in the area
14:55
because was the aryaba
14:57
and dionysius a woman named davaris and
15:00
others whose names are mentioned so
15:03
paul's labor was not in vain
15:05
so god specifically sent him there for
15:07
the people he had sovereignly
15:09
uh like chosen to save
15:12
and sin paul was successful because he
15:14
was the holy spirit who worked
15:16
through paul for the conviction and
15:18
saving of damaris
15:20
dionysius and they are named other folks
15:23
so this is the confidence that we have
15:24
in god we don't win
15:26
souls for christ on the basis of clever
15:29
human arguments but we do so by
15:31
submitting ourselves
15:32
to the leadership of the holy spirit who
15:35
does his work
15:36
of regenerating men's hearts by exposing
15:39
the lies they have been
15:40
under their whole entire life so when
15:42
paul went to
15:44
to the areopagus his chief purpose which
15:47
he may have not known was to save
15:49
their nation's damaris and the other one
15:52
whose names are mentioned so paul went
15:55
that he did not use like human arguments
15:57
his argument was basically based on
16:00
god's own
16:01
thoughts and he had god's power because
16:03
the reason why i'm saying this is
16:05
because
16:05
the amnesiacs were saved damaris was
16:08
saved
16:08
and the other one that mentioned were
16:10
saved god chose them
16:12
and he sent paul there to destroy the
16:14
strongholds and
16:15
and and they loved the opinions that
16:17
were raised against the knowledge of god
16:19
so when
16:20
dionysius heard those things when
16:22
damaris
16:23
heard those things when the other people
16:25
heard paul speaking
16:27
the strongholds came down and then their
16:30
thoughts were exposed and now they were
16:32
taken captive
16:33
to obey christ so therefore they
16:35
followed paul
16:36
uh teachings you see what happens this
16:38
is the process that paul is describing
16:41
in 2nd corinthians 10 and we see him in
16:43
action
16:44
now let's go back to uh uh what's the
16:46
takeaway
16:48
now first i'll say this this verse isn't
16:51
necessarily a command
16:53
for us to take our own uh thoughts
16:55
captive to obey christ
16:57
but we must submit ourselves
17:01
to the holy spirit scrutiny so that he
17:03
can destroy
17:04
the errors in our hearts heresies
17:07
you know false ideas and anything that
17:10
we may be thinking that it stands
17:11
against the knowledge of god
17:13
so we don't like do that ourselves but
17:17
we come under the holy spirit's
17:19
teaching through the word of god and
17:21
god's word
17:22
because he has power destroy the
17:24
strongholds in our mind
17:25
and bring those lies to the surface
17:29
and then we see those like we are undone
17:31
and the holy spirit renew our minds
17:33
by doing away with the accumulated lies
17:36
we've believed over all these years
17:38
and once god exposed those lies we are
17:40
undone like i said
17:41
and that's when change happens so we
17:44
ourself
17:44
must take a hold of all these means of
17:47
grace that god has provided
17:48
okay and and we're gonna take we have to
17:51
take a hold of
17:52
all these are means of grace in our
17:54
dealings with other people we don't
17:57
win souls by arguing our way we use
18:00
arguments that have their roots in god's
18:03
character god's origin and god's power
18:07
okay and we must do so by faith in the
18:09
sense that
18:10
we can't do it in our own strength is
18:13
god that has to command us
18:15
god sent paul to the aeropress and he's
18:18
gonna send us to places where
18:20
there are people that are here
18:21
sovereignly chosen to save and as we go
18:24
we bring the words of god and we bring
18:26
god's power because god is sending us so
18:28
therefore god get the glory and we don't
18:30
get the glory because we are the
18:32
messengers
18:33
so this is the takeaway and i would
18:35
encourage you to really
18:37
uh go back and read these scriptures
18:40
more because we need to understand that
18:42
uh we're not waging war
18:45
according to the flesh but our weapons
18:47
have
18:48
uh power divine power to destroy
18:51
strongholds okay we take captive
18:54
every falsehood and thought that's
18:57
raised against the knowledge of god
18:59
and we destroy them by the means of god
19:02
himself
19:03
so when we argue we are not arguing from
19:06
a
19:06
place of human reasoning but we are
19:08
using sometimes human words
19:11
but are disposing and dispensing uh
19:13
spiritual truths
19:14
that the holy spirit himself is putting
19:16
our minds through the word of god
19:18
and then we have god's power because god
19:19
is the one sending us there so we are
19:21
not going
19:22
into this battlefield with our own
19:25
weapons
19:25
god himself has equipped us with his
19:27
word with his power
19:29
in the holy spirit and to defeat the
19:31
enemy and to bring captives
19:33
in order to to make them obey god and
19:35
this is the truth that we have and this
19:37
is the word of god
19:38
so we must remember that we need to rely
19:42
fully on god's means of grace
19:45
okay i will encourage you to read that
19:46
passage paul and
19:48
um i'm looking forward to seeing you
19:50
again okay have a wonderful day thank
19:53
you
