In chapter 9 of Romans , Paul the apostle explained the doctrine of election and he opens chapter 10 with a heartfelt plea to his fellow Jews, let’s look at Romans 10:1 “Brothers,[a] my heart's desire and prayer to God for them( the people of Israel, the jews) is that they may be saved.” Paul goes on to explain why they continue to fail to recognize what the true righteousness that comes from God is, and in the process he makes a very strong statement in v4 “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes”. I want to zero in on that verse today. What does it mean for Christ to be the end of the law for righteousness?

hello good morning this is taiva
0:01
tabs.com
0:03
and today our focus will be romans 10
0:05
verse 4
0:07
and the verse read uh christ is the end
0:10
of the law
0:10
for righteousness to everyone who
0:12
believes so we are going to be
0:14
looking at that verse specifically
0:17
within the context in which it was
0:18
written
0:19
because it's imperative that we truly
0:21
understand how to
0:23
interpret on the scriptures correctly
0:26
because sometimes when we don't do that
0:28
then we take it out of context
0:30
and we apply it in a way that does not
0:32
fit
0:33
some people look at this verse and say
0:35
well jesus
0:36
is the end of the law so therefore we
0:38
are under grace i don't have to keep the
0:40
law anymore
0:41
i want to do what i want to do and the
0:44
scripture says christ is the end of the
0:46
law
0:46
for righteousness so therefore i am
0:48
righteous i don't have to keep the law
0:50
i just do what i want and jesus loves me
0:53
the way i
0:53
am so sometimes those things can
0:57
hurt our witness so we need to
0:59
understand the verse
1:00
and know how to apply so let's go into
1:04
my intro so in romans
1:08
9 paul explains on the doctrine of
1:10
salvation and election deduction of
1:12
election
1:14
and he opens on chapter 10 with a
1:16
heartfelt
1:17
plea to his fellow jews and we are going
1:20
to look at romans 10 verse 1
1:22
paul says brothers my heart's desire and
1:25
prayer to god
1:26
for them is referring to the jews his
1:28
fellow jews is that they may be saved
1:31
and um paul goes on to explain why
1:35
they continue to fail to recognize what
1:37
a true righteousness that comes from god
1:39
is
1:40
and in the process he makes a very
1:41
strong statement in verse four he says
1:44
for christ is the end of the law for
1:47
righteousness to everyone who believes
1:49
so we are going to zero in on that verse
1:52
and we need to understand why
1:54
what does it mean for christ to be the
1:56
end of the law for righteousness
1:58
now the first thing i want to do is i
2:00
want to look at romans 10
2:01
verse 2 to 3 because that's the verse
2:04
that follows romans 1.
2:06
paul says for i bear them witness
2:09
talking about his fellow jews
2:10
that they have a zeal for god but not
2:13
according
2:14
to knowledge for being ignorant of the
2:17
righteousness of god
2:18
and seeking to establish their own
2:20
righteousness
2:22
they did not submit to god's
2:24
righteousness
2:26
what does all that mean see paul
2:29
he acknowledges that some of his fellow
2:31
jews certainly
2:32
are zealous for god but their zeal
2:35
doesn't come from the holy spirit they
2:38
haven't been granted the mind
2:40
to understand the righteousness of god
2:42
and when paul
2:43
mentions ignorance in verse three it
2:46
isn't as if
2:47
that ignorance is innocent you know but
2:51
it doesn't it is an ignorance that is
2:53
rooted in unbelief
2:55
we need to truly understand that if you
2:57
look at ephesians 4
2:58
18 paul says they are darkened in their
3:01
understanding
3:03
alienated from the life of god because
3:05
of the ignorance
3:06
that is in them due to their hardness of
3:09
heart
3:10
so it's not an ignorance that is like
3:12
innocent as if
3:13
well they just didn't know this is why
3:15
they are doing what they are doing
3:17
yes we need to understand why they
3:19
didn't know
3:21
is so ignorance is not the reason why
3:24
people reject
3:25
the righteousness of god or paul's
3:27
fellow jews in that context
3:29
but it is unbelief because
3:32
the byproduct of unbelief
3:36
is ignorance so because of the hardness
3:39
of their heart
3:40
they don't believe and they become
3:42
ignorant in the process and they have a
3:44
lack of knowledge it is not as if they
3:46
just didn't know
3:47
this is because they are innocent oh so
3:49
god don't be mad god
3:51
don't be angry no it's because that that
3:54
ignorance
3:55
is deeply deeply rooted in
3:58
unbelief and the hardness of the heart
4:00
so it's not as if this is
4:02
innocent and i'm saying that again and
4:04
again so people can understand
4:05
because sometimes you see people say
4:08
well they are really zealous for god
4:09
they really truly love god
4:11
like you see someone so pious they're
4:13
trying to do everything yet they reject
4:15
jesus christ and then you go well how
4:17
can they
4:18
you know they really love god no they
4:21
don't
4:22
love god because they are acting in
4:24
ignorance and that ignorance
4:26
is deeply found in unbelief
4:29
a hardness of the heart so whatever they
4:31
are doing is called
4:32
a man-made religion which is i'm gonna
4:35
try to please god my way
4:36
just like cain did and god
4:40
rejects that because of the hardness of
4:42
their heart so the unbelief is not
4:44
innocent it is
4:45
deeply rooted in unbelief
4:48
okay the ignorance is not innocent keep
4:51
that in mind
4:52
so now in verse 4
4:55
paul gives that statement for christ
4:59
is the end of the law for
5:02
righteousness to everyone who believes
5:05
so
5:06
remember he's referring to his fellow
5:08
jews he's talking to them they are
5:09
trying to keep the law
5:10
they are doing everything to keep the
5:12
law yet
5:14
paul says christ is the end of the law
5:16
for righteousness to everyone who
5:18
believes does that mean that
5:19
god's law no longer matters because
5:22
jesus is here
5:22
is the end of the law let's truly
5:25
investigate this
5:27
first we need to understand the law that
5:29
paul is talking about
5:31
he's addressing primarily his his fellow
5:34
jews in this chapter
5:36
and they are very well aware of what is
5:38
paul talking about he didn't know what
5:39
he's talking about here he's talking
5:40
about the natural laws of god
5:43
those that god would never abrogate and
5:46
he's also probably talking about the
5:48
other dietary laws and the purification
5:50
laws and all these are the laws that
5:52
were put in place
5:54
for the jewish nation because they had a
5:56
covenant with god
5:58
so now let's go to exodus 20 verse 1 to
6:01
17 and
6:02
and also deuteronomy 6 1-9 those are
6:05
called the natural laws of god
6:07
those laws are consistent with god's
6:10
nature
6:10
and character those laws will never end
6:13
because they are the same
6:15
yesterday today and tomorrow god does
6:17
not change
6:18
so let's go to exodus 20 verse 1 to 17
6:21
and deuteronomy 6
6:22
verse 1 to 9 and we are going to see
6:25
what paul is talking about
6:27
so let's start with exodus 20 verse 1 to
6:30
17 the 10 commandments
6:32
and god spoke all his words i am the
6:36
lord your god who brought you out of
6:37
egypt
6:38
out of the land of slavery you shall
6:41
have
6:41
no other gods before me you shall not
6:45
make for yourself an image in the form
6:47
of anything in heaven
6:48
above or on the earth beneath or in the
6:51
waters below
6:52
you shall not bow down to them or
6:54
worship them for i the lord your god i
6:56
mean jealous god
6:58
punishing the children for the sin of
7:00
the parents to the third and fourth
7:02
generation of those who hate me
7:04
by showing love to a thousand
7:06
generations of those who love me
7:08
and keep my commandments you shall not
7:11
misuse the name of the lord your god
7:14
for the lord will not hold it will not
7:16
hold anyone guiltless who misuses his
7:18
name
7:20
remember the sabbath day by keeping it
7:22
holy six days you shall labor and do all
7:24
your work
7:25
but the seventh day is a servant to the
7:27
lord your god on it you shall not do any
7:29
work
7:30
neither you nor your son or your
7:31
daughter nor your male or female servant
7:34
nor your animals nor any foreigner
7:36
residing in your towns
7:38
when in six days the lord made the
7:39
heavens and the earth the sea
7:41
and all that's in them but he rested on
7:43
the seventh day
7:45
therefore the lord blessed the sabbath
7:47
day and made it holy
7:48
honor your father and your mother so
7:50
that you may live long in the land that
7:52
the lord your god is giving you you
7:54
shall not murder you shall not commit
7:56
adultery you shall not steal
7:58
you shall not give false testimony
8:00
against your neighbor you shall not
8:01
covet your neighbor's house
8:02
you shall not covet your neighbor's wife
8:04
or his male or female servant
8:06
he is ox or a donkey or anything that
8:09
belongs to your neighbor
8:10
this is the word of god now god is not
8:13
going to change
8:14
his laws on murder adultery stealing
8:17
false testimony covering and and in
8:20
keeping
8:21
the sabbath day holy i believe actually
8:24
every day is a sabbath day because every
8:25
day belongs to the lord
8:27
misusing his name that's not going to
8:28
change you know make yourself an image
8:31
in the form of anything idolatry is
8:32
still
8:33
god is not going to change those laws he
8:35
is still god and he
8:36
wants nobody before him because he is
8:39
god
8:40
okay and now let's go to deuteronomy 6
8:42
verse 1 to 9.
8:44
the scripture says these are the
8:46
commands decrees and laws the lord your
8:49
god directed me
8:50
to teach you to observe in the land that
8:52
you are crossing the jordan to possess
8:54
so that you your children and their
8:56
children after them may fear the lord
8:58
your god as long as you leave
9:00
by keeping all these decrees and
9:02
commands that i give you
9:03
and so that you may enjoy life long life
9:07
hear israel and be careful to obey so
9:09
that he may go well with you
9:10
and that you may increase greatly in the
9:13
land flowing with milk and honey
9:15
just as the lord the god of your
9:16
ancestors promise you
9:19
hear o israel the lord your god the lord
9:21
is one
9:22
okay one god in three persons
9:26
well he's a uh one of these a god law of
9:29
the lord your god with all your heart
9:31
with all your soul and with all your
9:33
strength
9:34
this verse ought to make you tremble
9:37
love the lord your god
9:39
with all your heart with all your soul
9:41
and with all your strength
9:42
that has not changed god is still
9:45
expecting us to love him this way
9:48
this commencement that i give you today
9:49
are to be on your heart
9:51
that's why you're saying impress them on
9:52
your children talk about them when you
9:54
sit at home and when you walk along the
9:56
road
9:57
when you lie down and when you get up
10:00
tie them
10:00
as cymbals on your hands and bind them
10:03
on your foreheads
10:04
write them on the doorframes of your
10:06
houses and on your gates
10:08
so god natural laws those laws have been
10:12
changed
10:13
by himself like he want us to love him
10:15
with all our heart
10:16
mind and soul and strength he wants that
10:19
that has not changed so let's keep that
10:21
in mind and let's go back to the
10:23
presentation
10:26
so we talk about this right and then now
10:30
there was also like several other laws
10:32
like dietary laws
10:33
purification or diseases for diseases
10:35
for relationships and for sacrifices
10:38
that the jews had to abide by and he can
10:40
take some some time and look at
10:42
leviticus
10:43
from chapter i think 10 to like all the
10:45
way to the end
10:46
there's like additional laws that were
10:48
mandated by god
10:50
through moses now the natural laws of
10:52
god that were consistent with his
10:54
character
10:55
were never to be obligated now some
10:57
dietary laws
10:58
may no longer hold now but i'm not gonna
11:00
get into that
11:01
but both natural laws and the other laws
11:04
had a specific purpose the law
11:06
of god was not just given for the sake
11:08
of just giving us a law
11:10
he had a purpose god was only was
11:13
not only revealing his character but was
11:15
also some other things that he wanted
11:17
us people to know and the jewish people
11:19
in particular
11:20
because he didn't just give the laws for
11:22
nothing now to truly understand the
11:24
purpose of the law
11:26
excuse me let's look at an encounter
11:28
that jesus had in mark 10
11:30
uh verse 17 to 22. we're gonna go
11:33
through the scriptures
11:34
so the rich young ruler you know the
11:38
story
11:39
so as jesus started on his way a man ran
11:42
up to him and fell on his knees before
11:44
him
11:45
good teacher he asked what must i must i
11:48
do
11:48
to inherit eternal life why do you call
11:52
me good
11:53
jesus answered no one is good except god
11:56
alone
11:57
you know the commandments you shall no
11:59
murder you shall not commit adultery you
12:02
shall not steal you shall not give
12:04
false testimony you shall not defraud
12:06
honor your father and mother
12:08
and the man say his teacher he declared
12:11
all these i have kept since i was a boy
12:14
so that's almost like a sigh of relief
12:16
is that oh yeah i've done it
12:19
and jesus look jesus looks at him looked
12:21
at him and loved him
12:24
one thing you lack he said go
12:28
sell everything you have and give to the
12:31
poor
12:32
and you will have treasure in heaven
12:34
then come
12:35
and follow me at this demands fell
12:38
the man's face fell and he went away sad
12:41
because he had
12:43
great wealth so immediately you can see
12:46
what's going on here
12:47
the man came to trying to figure out
12:49
what is the one thing that i'm lacking
12:51
in my life to inherit eternal life he's
12:53
trying to earn something
12:54
right he wants to please god he wants to
12:57
do
12:57
what god wants him to do and then jesus
13:00
answers him with
13:02
you shall not murder you shall not
13:03
commit adultery shall not steal you
13:05
shall not give false testimony you shall
13:06
not defraud
13:07
honor your honor your father and your
13:09
mother and he probably says to jesus
13:11
all this i've kept since i was a boy
13:13
kind of feeling himself a little bit
13:16
and then jesus tells him one thing you
13:18
like go sell everything you have and
13:20
give to the poor
13:21
and you will have treasure in heaven
13:23
then come follow me
13:24
and the man goes away sad because he has
13:27
great wealth
13:28
now let's go back to deuteronomy 6
13:31
verse 6 verse 5 law of the lord your god
13:34
with all your heart with all your soul
13:36
and with all your strength this man
13:39
clearly
13:41
cannot do that because he loved money
13:44
more than he loved god and his
13:47
understanding of the law of god was
13:48
really superficial
13:49
if you go back to leviticus 22 what does
13:52
the scripture say
13:54
in uh uh not leviticus
13:57
um exodus 20
14:00
i am the lord your god who brought you
14:02
out of egypt out of the land of slavery
14:04
you shall have no
14:05
other gods before me money
14:09
came before god in this man's life
14:12
and why was god given the law he's given
14:16
us a law that we cannot
14:17
keep for a purpose and let's go back to
14:19
the presentation and we're going to talk
14:21
about that
14:22
so the man in the account had a
14:25
superficial view of the law of god
14:27
he was standing right before the author
14:29
of eternal life
14:31
and didn't understand that the main
14:33
objective of the law
14:34
was to point him to jesus christ himself
14:37
so basically
14:40
christ coming was meant to show the
14:42
weakness of the law in
14:44
saving us okay christ's coming was
14:46
supposed to show
14:48
the weakness of the law in saving me and
14:51
you
14:52
this is why jesus is the end of the law
14:55
because the law was meant to point us to
14:58
jesus
14:59
if you look at galatians 3 verse 24 the
15:02
scripture says
15:03
so then the law was our guardian until
15:06
christ
15:07
came in order that we might be justified
15:10
by faith
15:12
okay those who seek to be justified by
15:15
the keeping of the law
15:16
must indeed keep the entire law to be
15:20
counted righteous
15:22
the one that wants to believe and
15:24
receive
15:25
eternal life basically leave it to live
15:27
is to receive eternal life in god's eyes
15:30
the one that wants to have eternal life
15:32
apart from the righteousness of god
15:34
in jesus must fully leave out
15:39
all the commandments starting with
15:41
deuteronomy 6 5 you shall love the lord
15:44
your god
15:44
with all your heart with all your soul
15:46
involve your strength
15:48
if you want to earn eternal life on your
15:50
own terms
15:52
this is what you must do so the law
15:55
basically when when paul says that
15:57
christ is the end of the law he's not
15:59
saying that the natural laws of god no
16:01
longer matter
16:03
because we are under grace that's not
16:04
what he's saying but what paul is saying
16:06
is that the law's job
16:08
the job of the law and the goal of the
16:09
law and the objective of the law
16:13
is is is is to point us to to jesus
16:17
the law came to the heart in the sense
16:18
that the law was like okay
16:21
lord you've done your job when jesus
16:23
came
16:24
now your job is no longer needed in the
16:27
sense that
16:28
now you need to point to jesus that's
16:31
the job of the lord the goal of the lord
16:34
because the chief purpose of the law is
16:36
given in galatians 3 19. i want to go to
16:38
the scripture for that reason because
16:40
he does a better job than me explaining
16:42
it so let's go
16:43
to scripture for that so paul says
16:47
why then was the lord giving at all he
16:50
was
16:51
added because of transgressions until
16:53
the seed to whom the promised referral
16:56
had come the law was given through
16:59
angels and entrusted with mediator
17:01
immediately however implies more than
17:03
one party
17:04
but god is one is the law therefore
17:06
opposed to the promises of god
17:08
absolutely not for if a law had been
17:11
given that could impart
17:13
life then righteousness would certainly
17:15
have come by the law
17:17
but scripture has locked up everything
17:19
under the control of sin
17:20
so that what was promised being given
17:23
through faith in jesus christ might be
17:25
given to those who believe
17:27
so you see let's go back to the present
17:29
so you see that as great as the law is
17:32
he could not save people then and he
17:34
cannot save us today
17:36
the law was supposed to show us our
17:38
wretchedness
17:39
wretchedness in order that we might
17:41
humble ourselves under the mercy of god
17:43
by receiving his free gift of salvation
17:46
by grace through the work of christ
17:49
jesus didn't come to abolish the law but
17:51
to fulfill the law
17:52
and then he grants us righteousness that
17:55
is not contingent
17:56
on us keeping the law but on him keeping
17:59
the law on our behalf
18:01
so righteousness is by works but not my
18:03
works but the works of jesus christ and
18:05
then
18:06
he applies his work to me and to you
18:10
and now he declares us righteous in
18:11
jesus christ
18:13
so that now he gives us the holy spirit
18:15
to confirm our election because now the
18:18
holy spirit come
18:19
to sanctify you and to sanctify me
18:23
so when paul says christ is the end of
18:25
the law for righteousness
18:26
he's saying that when jesus came the law
18:30
did his job the law did its job
18:34
basically said to point us to him
18:35
because the law
18:36
says listen as good as the law of god is
18:39
perfect in
18:40
every way we are imperfect people
18:43
because we are born with the propensity
18:45
to sin
18:46
so the law comes to show us listen you
18:48
cannot keep the law
18:50
you cannot keep the law so what do i do
18:54
i fall under the mercy of god and say
18:56
lord jesus
18:57
save me because i can't keep the law
19:01
not even in a single second because the
19:04
deuteronomy 6 5 says you shall love the
19:06
lord your god with all your heart with
19:08
all your soul and
19:09
all your strength and with all your mind
19:12
meaning
19:13
every single second that i leave must be
19:16
dedicated
19:17
holy to god who can do that
19:20
no one so the law was meant to show
19:24
our inability to keep the law of god
19:28
so that we can we can be pointed to
19:30
jesus say
19:31
he did what i can do i can't save myself
19:36
by keeping these laws i can't do it but
19:38
jesus kept
19:39
the law he kept every single aspect of
19:42
the law he lived his life
19:44
according to deuteronomy 6 5 and then he
19:46
grants me
19:47
that righteousness he grants you if you
19:49
believe in him that righteousness
19:51
if you acknowledge that jesus is lord
19:54
acknowledging meaning if you know that
19:56
only by him because
19:57
scripture says there is no under name
19:59
under heaven by which
20:00
we could be saved by the name of christ
20:02
he is the only way he is the way
20:04
the truth and the life there is no other
20:07
way
20:08
your religious practices you trying to
20:10
please god
20:11
doing this and that because a lot of
20:13
people you ask them
20:14
if god were to ask you why should i let
20:16
you into heaven they go
20:18
well because you know i try to be a good
20:19
person i don't i don't steal
20:21
i don't kill you know i don't but have
20:23
you lost it in your mind
20:24
have you had any single bad thought in
20:26
your mind have you ever coveted
20:28
something else
20:29
even if you didn't take it did you think
20:31
about it
20:32
because jesus comes in and gives us a
20:34
deeper understanding of the lord
20:36
blessed are the pure in hearts what they
20:38
shall see god purity of heart
20:40
who has that no one for jesus this is
20:43
why
20:44
christ is the end of the law because the
20:46
law completely
20:48
tells us how wretched we are and as bad
20:51
as
20:51
as the news is that we are bad is good
20:53
because that bad news
20:55
lead us to good news because god says
20:57
yes i see that you're wretched
20:59
you can't keep my law so therefore i've
21:01
made a provision for you
21:04
and as you receive jesus as your lord
21:07
and savior
21:08
by grace through faith he comes
21:11
and inhabits you by his holy spirit and
21:13
then sanctifies you
21:14
until the redemption of your body
21:17
so this is the this this is why romans
21:20
10 4 is so important because it shows us
21:23
how weak we are even after receiving the
21:26
holy spirit we still struggle
21:28
if you go back to romans 7 you will see
21:30
that but
21:31
it's not all lost because we understand
21:34
that we no longer now
21:35
are under the dominion of sin but now
21:39
christ come and through his holy spirit
21:42
we have victory in jesus
21:44
we have that victory in jesus so i would
21:46
encourage you to
21:48
not count on your own works because your
21:49
own works as a as filthy as filthy rags
21:52
jesus says
21:54
but the works of christ we impart your
21:57
spirit
21:57
to keep you from sinning against him it
22:00
gives you so much it gives us so much
22:01
that we don't even understand
22:03
so have a wonderful day and i hope to
22:05
see you next time for another
22:07
study okay have a wonderful day
