The Apostle John said in 1 John 4:20 “ If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot[a] love God whom he has not seen” I’ve read this verse several times and tried to understand what the Lord was communicating through the apostle John. Today we’ll be exploring this verse and its implications. How can people claim to love God whom they haven’t seen if they can’t love their brother/sister whom they see? hello good morning this is Taibbi iep's
0:02
calm and I hope you're having a good
0:05
week I know a lot of people have been
0:08
disrupted in their daily activities
0:10
some have been laid off and some might
0:14
just be trying to figure out how to get
0:15
a new job or whatever it be situation is
0:18
with you but I'm here to just tell you
0:21
our God is still in control if she
0:24
believed in the Lord Jesus you know that
0:26
all things work together for good for
0:28
those who love God and I've been called
0:30
according to his purpose
0:31
so I just want to let you know that he
0:34
hasn't forgotten the raw knows what's
0:36
going on and I would love for you to
0:38
just come under his love and care and
0:40
his sovereign hand because he's
0:43
sovereign over all this these things we
0:45
don't know why he allow certain things
0:47
to happen but we know that there's
0:49
always a end purpose there was a family
0:51
in Egypt and the end purpose was to save
0:55
Joseph and his brothers and the entire
0:58
family and so this is also gonna produce
1:02
some fruit that we will find out later
1:04
on but in the meantime I would encourage
1:07
you to just keep pressing on and all
1:09
lose hope so today I have a new lecture
1:12
for you guys we're gonna talk about
1:14
first John 4:20 and the title of these
1:18
messages can you love God and hate your
1:21
brother so let's get into it I'm gonna
1:25
get into the background real quick now
1:28
the question is how can you love God and
1:31
hate your brother the Apostle John said
1:34
in 1st John 4:20 if anyone says I love
1:39
God and hates his brother he is a liar
1:42
for he who does not love his brother
1:45
whom he has seen cannot love God whom he
1:49
has not seen so I've read this verse
1:52
like several times I try to understand
1:55
what the Lord was trying to say through
1:57
the Apostle John so today we're gonna be
2:00
exploring this verse and its
2:01
implications so how can people claim to
2:04
love God whom they haven't seen if they
2:07
can't love their brother and sister whom
2:09
they see now the very first thing
2:12
we need to understand is that John is
2:14
referring to folks in the family of God
2:17
primarily so this verse solely applies
2:20
to brothers and sisters in Christ thus
2:23
the first premise we need to understand
2:25
that because when John was writing this
2:27
his verses and his passage he was
2:29
writing to believers so to better
2:33
understand for John 4:20 we need to look
2:35
at John's own clear explanations in 1st
2:39
John 5:1
2:40
he says everyone who believes that Jesus
2:44
is the Christ has been born of God and
2:47
everyone who loves the Father loves
2:51
whoever has been born of him let me
2:54
repeat that last one again and everyone
2:57
who loves the Father loves whoever has
3:02
been born of the father meaning if you
3:05
claim to love God the Father then you're
3:09
gonna love everyone was been born of the
3:12
Spirit of God the Father okay so keep
3:15
that in mind so now what we're gonna do
3:17
is we're gonna look at some examples in
3:19
scriptures of folks who hated and their
3:23
brother and we and then we're gonna come
3:25
to a close after that so first let's
3:28
look at Genesis 4 the story of Cain and
3:31
Abel I've actually done a lecture on
3:33
that and I'm gonna be sharing that in
3:35
the description below so make sure you
3:37
click on our link so basically I'm gonna
3:39
read the verse and we're gonna see what
3:41
happened scripture says in the course of
3:45
time Cain brought to the Lord an
3:47
offering of the fruit of the ground and
3:49
Abel also brought of the firstborn of
3:52
his flock and of their fat portions and
3:54
the Lord had regard for Abel and
3:57
offering for for Cain and his offering
4:00
he had no regard so Cain was very angry
4:04
and his face fell and the Lord said to
4:07
Cain why are you angry and why has your
4:11
face fallen if you do well will it not
4:14
be accepted and if you do not do well
4:17
sin is crouching at the door its desire
4:20
is contrary to you but you must rule
4:23
over it
4:24
caine spoke to us it would cane spoke to
4:27
a with his brother and when they were in
4:30
the field Cain rose up against his
4:32
brother Abel and killed him then the
4:35
Lord said to Cain where is Abel your
4:37
brother and he said I do not know am I
4:41
my brother's keeper
4:42
so the Apostle John also tells us why
4:45
Cain killed Abel in first John 3:12 he
4:49
said we should not be like Cain was of
4:52
the evil one and murdered his brother
4:54
and why did he murder him because his
4:59
own deeds were evil and his brothers
5:02
righteous so the Kia was righteousness
5:06
so God had prescribed how to worship Him
5:10
he said to buffer him bring his sheep
5:14
and this is the only way I'm going to
5:16
accept it
5:16
Cain try to bring his own offering by
5:20
creating his own way and God wouldn't
5:23
have it God rejected it so he was angry
5:26
and what happened was he ended up
5:28
killing his brother so he did not want
5:31
to ask Abel for a ship because of his
5:34
own pride his brother was righteous by
5:37
doing exactly what God had prescribed
5:39
his praying his ship so this story has
5:42
greater implication because he's really
5:44
shown us the story of Jesus because
5:47
Jesus is our only way to the Father and
5:49
many people claim I can worship God in
5:53
my own terms and God won't have it his
5:55
head is only through Jesus so that story
5:57
of Abel and Cain is really giving us
5:59
that picture there so the main reason
6:02
why I came killed his brother is because
6:04
of righteousness he did not want to
6:06
bring his ship he wanted to bring his
6:10
own fruits he wanted to bring his own
6:11
offering and God rejected it so he hated
6:14
his brother Abel so what was it really
6:17
hating Cain was really hating God who
6:21
prescribed the offering so Abel was only
6:24
doing what God had to say to do which is
6:27
the righteousness of God which is bring
6:29
the ship and Cain hated that because he
6:31
wanted to have his own way and God
6:33
wouldn't have it so
6:35
keep righteousness in mind now let's
6:37
look at another story we're gonna look
6:39
at the story of Joseph in his products
6:41
now ISM is recorded in Genesis 37 and
6:45
I'm gonna start with our first two
6:49
Joseph being 17 years old was pastoring
6:53
the fraught with his brothers he was a
6:56
boy of the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah his
6:58
father's wives and Joseph brought a bad
7:02
report of them to their father now
7:04
Israel loved Joseph more than any other
7:08
of his sons because he was the son of
7:11
his old age and he made him a robe of
7:13
many colors but when his brothers saw
7:17
that their father loved him more than
7:18
all his brothers they hated him and
7:21
could not speak peacefully to him now
7:24
Joseph had a dream and when he told it
7:27
to his brothers they hated him even more
7:30
he said to them hear this dream that
7:33
I've dreamed behold we were binding
7:36
sheaves in the field and behold my sheaf
7:39
arose and stood upright and behold your
7:43
sheaves gathered around it and bowed
7:45
down to my sheaf and his brother's Satan
7:48
are you indeed to reign over us or are
7:52
you indeed to rule over us so they hated
7:55
him even more for his dreams and for his
7:57
words so Joseph's brothers hated
8:02
Joseph's topic but his dreams were
8:06
god-given see God gave Joseph those
8:08
dreams and what the Lord was trying to
8:11
communicate through the dream was that
8:12
someday he would work through Joseph to
8:16
bring salvation to the entire family by
8:19
rescuing them from the famine that took
8:20
place in in Egypt and the entire world
8:25
thus the surrounding those surrounding
8:27
nations so in light of this whom do you
8:31
think Joseph's brothers were really
8:33
hating god of Joseph they were really
8:38
hating on God because God was the one
8:40
that gave those dreams to Joseph God was
8:44
the one that elevated Jews have to
8:45
displaced God was the one that did
8:47
everything through Joseph because
8:49
Joseph was his choice and God said I
8:52
will have compassion on whom I will have
8:53
compassion and God can choose whenever
8:55
he wants to choose to bring about his
8:57
purposes in this case he was Joseph so
9:00
he elevated Joseph and his brothers
9:02
couldn't stand it so while they were
9:05
hating on Joseph they were really
9:07
hitting on God who gave Joseph all these
9:11
attributes and all this special favor
9:14
okay like I say this is crucial to
9:17
understanding 1st John 4:20 so now let's
9:21
go back to 1st John 4:20 so what is John
9:24
really saying to us in this passage why
9:27
do you think so someone who hate his
9:29
brother or sister in Christ now we saw
9:31
from Cain and Abel that the first thing
9:33
could be righteousness ok so John is
9:36
saying something profound Cain hated
9:39
Abel because
9:40
Abel's Abel's deeds were righteous and
9:42
his own deeds were evil
9:45
the reason for the hatred was
9:48
righteousness God is righteous and
9:51
anyone that truly claimed to love God
9:54
will of the righteousness of god in his
9:59
brother or sister in Christ let me
10:01
repeat that again God is righteous and
10:04
anyone that truly claimed to love God
10:08
will love the righteousness of god in
10:12
his brother or sister in Christ so what
10:15
people hate is the righteousness of god
10:18
in that brother or the sister in Christ
10:21
and if that's the case it is evidence
10:24
that the love of God is not in them
10:27
again let me repeat again it is evidence
10:30
that the love of God is not in them
10:33
because the enemy hates the
10:35
righteousness of God okay so what people
10:38
hate in a brother or sister in Christ is
10:42
the righteousness of God so you're not
10:45
really hating that brother you're
10:47
hearing god righteousness in that person
10:51
so and the answer again is in 1st John
10:53
5:1 everyone who loves the Father loves
10:58
whoever has been born of him why because
11:02
whoever has been born of God will bear
11:05
God's character and traits since the DNA
11:09
of God is in that person so while you
11:13
hid your brother because of his
11:15
righteousness you are really saying god
11:17
I hate you because I don't like the
11:19
righteousness of God in that person so
11:22
your hatred is now really toward your
11:24
brother or toward God himself that's
11:28
number one number two that could be
11:30
jealousy or lack of contentment as we
11:32
have seen in in Joseph's life okay
11:35
because we are all children of God and
11:38
if we are then we must love one another
11:41
since we all display the character of
11:44
God and the attributes of God in order
11:48
that the whole family of God might
11:50
verify God so our diversity is for the
11:54
glory of God
11:55
so one blood of Christ may have this
11:58
gift may have that gift somebody else
12:00
may have this gift so that diversity is
12:03
for God's glory because we each have
12:06
portions of his character and attributes
12:08
and we each show it through the
12:10
spiritual gifts or the manifestation in
12:13
our bodies and this is what John is
12:15
attempting to tell us we must first look
12:17
and seek for the root of our hatred is
12:21
it righteousness jealousy willful
12:24
disobedience pride what is it what is
12:26
causing you to hate on your brother
12:28
that's what you need to look for first
12:30
because the person you despise is a
12:33
reflection of the Lord Himself so you
12:36
are really not hating that person but
12:39
you are hating God in that person all
12:41
you are hearing the work the work and
12:44
the work of God in that person you
12:47
understand it so you need to first seek
12:49
for the hatred the root of the hatred is
12:52
it because that person is righteous is
12:54
it because you're covering the gifts in
12:57
that person what is causing you to hit
12:59
your brother in Christ because if that
13:01
person is is righteous and you hate the
13:03
righteousness you are really hitting the
13:05
righteousness of God give that person a
13:07
certain attribute of God that you hate
13:09
and that you want and yet you call it
13:11
and that's why you're hating you are
13:13
really saying to God
13:14
and I'm so mad that you gave that person
13:16
that gift and you didn't give it to me
13:17
in the case of Joseph so basically you
13:21
are standing in direct opposition of God
13:24
so you are not really healing that
13:26
product you are really hating God in
13:28
that product or sister in Christ okay
13:31
you get that so like I said I repeat
13:34
this again because the person you're
13:37
despised is a reflection of the Lord so
13:40
you are really not hating that person
13:43
but you are really hating God in that
13:46
person or the work of God in that person
13:48
this is why John says in first John 5 -
13:51
by this we know that we love the
13:55
children of God when we love God and
13:58
obey His commandments so how do we show
14:01
that we love our brothers in Christ by
14:04
loving God and obeying his Commandments
14:07
so this is what is scripture saying how
14:10
do we love our brothers and sisters in
14:12
Christ by loving God and obeying His
14:14
commandments
14:15
in other words by reflecting his
14:18
character and that ought to make our
14:21
brothers in Christ rejoice so if anyone
14:24
hates and despises the fact that we are
14:27
reflecting the character of God then he
14:30
means that they don't truly know God
14:33
let me repeat again if anyone hates and
14:36
despises the fact that we are reflecting
14:40
the character of God then he means that
14:43
they don't truly know God so their
14:45
problem isn't against the person that's
14:48
reflecting the character of God for rada
14:51
against God himself because the Lord
14:55
exposes darkness the Pharisees was a
14:58
typical example Jesus a they hated me
15:02
without a cause why do you think they
15:04
hated Jesus because he exposed the
15:08
condition of their heart and they can't
15:10
stand it
15:11
they claim to love God yet they hated
15:14
Jesus how's that possible they claim to
15:19
love God yet they hated Jesus
15:24
this is what people do they claim that
15:25
the law of God yet the hate the person
15:27
does reflecting the character of God the
15:30
trace of God the attribute of God
15:33
because Jesus is the fullness of God
15:37
himself
15:37
he's God himself so how can you hit
15:40
someone else truly God and claim to love
15:45
God the Father can happen and this is
15:49
what John is saying if you hate your
15:51
brother in Christ that is reflecting the
15:53
character of God how can you love God
15:55
because you see your brother and you
15:57
hate that that which you see is the
16:00
character of God the reflection of God
16:02
so if you hate that in that product you
16:04
can truly rock that it can happen ok
16:08
that's a contradiction so basically this
16:12
water passages is basically saying now I
16:16
want to make some some clear points here
16:19
we are not told not to rebuke our
16:21
brother you can lick your brother in
16:23
Christ in love when they are doing
16:25
something that's not right provided you
16:27
yourself first you say take the speck of
16:30
the lager out of your own eye so you can
16:33
take this speck out of your brother's
16:35
eye this is not a call to go out and say
16:37
well I'm righteous and he hates me now
16:39
this is your righteousness sometimes you
16:41
don't even have to speak because your
16:43
righteousness will speak for itself
16:45
because this is coming from God okay you
16:48
know right self righteous your
16:50
righteousness comes from the Lord so
16:52
when you are righteous and you're
16:53
exuding and you're showing the character
16:55
of God is because the Lord Himself is
16:57
working in you and the person that sees
16:59
you will begin to recognize God in you
17:02
and you either hate it or love it
17:05
this is basically what it's saying here
17:07
and if they love it is because they are
17:09
children of the light and if they hate
17:12
it is because they're children of
17:13
darkness now you may be a child of light
17:17
and in the meantime you're being sifted
17:19
and you don't like what your brother is
17:20
doing in Christ and you hate that well
17:23
eventually you come around again because
17:25
scripture says and God see it remaining
17:28
us and we cannot go on sinning so for me
17:30
that you may be struggling but
17:32
eventually this Holy Spirit Himself will
17:34
bring you because he is able to preserve
17:36
you
17:37
all right so hopefully this passage
17:39
makes sense to you I don't encourage you
17:41
to read it more and to try not allow the
17:43
Holy Spirit to align your mind to
17:45
understand what is the same have a
17:47
wonderful day and I'll see you next
17:48
thank you
