A Closer Look At 1 Samuel 3:1-7, The Great Apostasy

Feb 20, 2025
This is probably one of the worst time in the history of the people of God. The priesthood/ leadership is corrupted, it seems as if God isn’t going to punish or deal with the ongoing apostasy. But that’s not the case since a woman’s barrenness leads her to pray an important prayer that will bring God’s judgement and mark the beginning of a revival. Today we’re going to be looking at 1 Samuel 3:1-7; it focuses on the current spiritual state of the people of God and Samuel’s Holy Call to ministry. hello this is taipe again and today we
0:02
are going to look at
0:04
first samuel 3 verse 1 to 27
0:07
and the title of my studies and the word
0:09
of the lord
0:10
was rare in those days so we are going
0:12
to be covering this chapter
0:13
and the reason why i want to do is
0:15
because i believe we are living in a
0:17
time where
0:17
there's a lot of spiritual apostasy in
0:21
the sense that
0:22
people don't really quite care about the
0:24
things of god
0:25
anymore and this is the condition that
0:29
the people of god were under
0:32
uh in that chapter between chapter one
0:35
and through chapter
0:36
four and five it talks about um the
0:38
spiritual state of
0:39
of the jews at the time uh under eli eli
0:43
is the high priest and we're going to be
0:44
looking at it today
0:45
and we are going to be seeing the
0:47
connection between them and us today
0:49
okay so let's get into that i'm going to
0:52
go to the next slide
0:53
and i'm going to read you my quick
0:54
introduction which i kind of gave you
0:56
just now
0:57
like i said this is probably the worst
0:59
time
1:00
in the history of the people of god the
1:02
priesthood and leadership is corrupted
1:05
it seems as if god isn't going to punish
1:08
or deal with the ongoing apostasy
1:10
but that's not the case since a woman's
1:13
bearingness
1:14
leads her to pray an important prayer
1:16
that will bring
1:18
god's judgment and mark the beginning of
1:20
our revival
1:21
now today we are going to be looking at
1:23
first samuel 3 verse 1 7
1:25
and he focuses on the current uh
1:27
spiritual state of the people of god
1:29
and samuels holy call to ministry so
1:31
that's what we are going to be looking
1:33
at
1:34
let's go to the next slide and get into
1:35
the
1:37
first and verse verse one
1:40
um says in chapter 3
1:43
now the boy samuel was ministering to
1:46
the lord
1:46
in the presence of eli and the word of
1:49
the lord
1:50
was rare in those days there was no
1:53
frequent vision
1:55
now the absence of frequent vision
1:58
indicated that the word of god
1:59
was scarce the people of god were not
2:02
experiencing
2:03
the presence of god which made the
2:05
apostasy even worse
2:07
god's voice wasn't being heard and
2:09
people did what they deemed
2:11
right in their own eyes now we need to
2:13
know why the word of the lord was rare
2:15
now eli's sons hopefully and phineas
2:18
they were corrupted
2:19
and eli never corrected and disciplined
2:22
them he never really took care of
2:23
what was happening the leadership in the
2:26
church had been corrupted
2:27
because of the sinful practices that
2:29
were utterly
2:30
disgusting in the lord's sight and eli
2:33
sons
2:33
completely disrespected the offerings of
2:36
the lord they slept with the women that
2:38
were serving at the entrance of the the
2:39
temple
2:40
and they suffered no immediate uh
2:42
consequences now
2:43
if you recall nadab and abay who i think
2:47
i'm not sure if this in exodus where
2:49
they
2:50
offered unauthorized fire to the lord
2:52
and they burned on the spot
2:54
now god executed them right away when
2:57
they sinned against him
2:59
so you can kind of contrast that and
3:01
what's happening now in the sense that
3:03
eli
3:03
sons are doing something terrible they
3:06
are they are like
3:07
looking with contempt at the offerings
3:09
of the lord they don't care
3:11
they are sleeping with women and they
3:12
are just mistreating everything in the
3:14
holy temple
3:15
and they don't suffer consequences so
3:17
you can kind of see
3:18
the the attitude behind them they're
3:20
probably thinking you know what
3:22
we haven't died nothing has happened to
3:24
us
3:25
so they are taking god lightly and
3:28
forgetting that the patience of god
3:29
is supposed to lead you to repentance so
3:32
let's read on first samuel 1
3:34
verse 12 to 21 to see exactly what eli
3:37
sons were doing so let's let's go to
3:40
that real quick
3:40
i have the verse pulled up here so i'm
3:43
going to read
3:44
uh this section and you see how it's
3:46
labeled
3:47
eli's worthless sons now i don't want to
3:50
be labeled as
3:51
worthless so when god calls you
3:54
worthless
3:54
that's not good so let's see what they
3:56
did that
3:58
warranted such a name so the scripture
4:00
says
4:01
now the sons of eli were worthless men
4:04
they did not know the lord so in god's
4:07
eyes
4:08
being worthless mean you don't know the
4:10
lord because this is what scripture says
4:12
in verse 12.
4:13
now the sons of eli were worthless and
4:16
he follows with
4:17
they did not know the lord the custom of
4:20
the priest
4:21
with the people was that when any man
4:23
offered sacrifice
4:25
the priest servant would come and while
4:28
the meat was boiling
4:29
with three pronged fork in his hand and
4:31
he would thrust it into the pan
4:33
or kettle or cauldron or pot all that
4:36
the fork brought up
4:37
the priest would take for himself this
4:40
is why they did a shiloh to all the
4:42
israelites who came there
4:43
moreover before the fat was burned the
4:46
priest
4:47
servant would come and say that the man
4:49
was sacrificing
4:50
give meat for the priest to roast or he
4:52
would not accept boiled meat from you
4:54
but only raw and if the man said to him
4:57
let them burn the fat first and then
4:59
take as much as you wish
5:00
he will say no you must give it noun and
5:03
if not i will take it by force
5:05
nah think about it this is the priest
5:07
talking thus the sin of the young man
5:09
was very great
5:10
in the sight of the lord for the man
5:13
treated the offering of the lord with
5:15
contempt
5:16
and samuel was ministering before the
5:18
lord a boy clothed with elenin ephrath
5:21
and his mother used to make form a
5:22
little rope and take to take it to him
5:24
each year when she went up with her
5:26
husband to offer the yearly sacrifice
5:29
then eli will bless elkanah his wife and
5:32
say
5:32
may the lord give you children by this
5:34
woman for the petition she asks for the
5:36
lord
5:36
of the lord so then they will return to
5:39
their home
5:40
indeed the lord visited henna and she
5:42
conceived and bore
5:43
three sons and two daughters and the boy
5:45
samuel grew in the presence of the lord
5:47
now if you look at this i won't give you
5:50
the full explanation but eli's sons
5:53
they were not doing what god had called
5:54
them to do in the sense that
5:57
when somebody brought the meat they they
5:59
were supposed to allow
6:01
the um the meat to be roasted first
6:04
because
6:04
the fat had to be burned first and as
6:06
the fat was being burned
6:08
the smell was a pleasing aroma to the
6:10
lord so they didn't want that because
6:12
they wanted to eat the fat with the meat
6:13
because the fat is what gave the meat
6:15
the taste that they wanted so they
6:18
treated the offering of the lord with
6:19
contempt
6:20
they didn't care because according to
6:21
the law of god they were supposed to
6:23
wait
6:24
till the meat and all the fat have been
6:26
burned up but they didn't do that
6:28
because they wanted to eat the best and
6:30
the choices meet
6:32
and thus they completely disrespected
6:35
the offering of the lord
6:37
and then on top of that they were
6:39
sleeping with the women that were
6:40
serving at the entrance of the altar i
6:42
mean
6:42
their sin was this great okay so i'm
6:45
gonna i'm just
6:46
giving you a picture of what what's
6:47
going on in in the in in the temple
6:49
at the time like the leadership is
6:51
completely corrupted and
6:52
eli fails to correct the problem he
6:55
tells his kids but they're not listening
6:57
to him and he doesn't do anything about
6:58
it he just let it go
7:00
so you can kind of see the attitude they
7:02
are doing all these things and god is
7:03
not bringing this
7:04
swift judgment so they're thinking we
7:06
can get away with it
7:07
we've been doing this for years and
7:09
nothing has happened we are not like
7:10
made up of
7:11
so god is god is okay with me i don't
7:14
fear god because he hasn't done anything
7:16
so
7:16
there's this kind of um relaxed attitude
7:20
where
7:20
it's like well i don't even think all
7:22
that god stuff is true because
7:24
if he was then we would have died right
7:26
now i said nothing has happened so you
7:27
can kind of see the
7:28
attitude creeping in there okay so let's
7:30
go back to the slide
7:32
so this is what's happening
7:35
so even though god didn't punish the
7:38
saints immediately
7:39
the absence of vision should have been a
7:41
clue that he wasn't pleased with their
7:44
lack of repentance
7:45
over their ongoing sin in the leadership
7:48
because god will ultimately judge and
7:50
deal with sin
7:52
because he's righteous the thing is this
7:54
they should have learned a lesson
7:56
scripture says and the word of the lord
7:58
was rare in those days
8:00
there was no frequent vision in a sense
8:02
that there was so much sin
8:05
that god's presence was scarce remember
8:08
what scripture says in
8:09
in the beatitudes right blessed are they
8:12
pure in heart for they shall see god
8:14
okay so the lack of vision the lack of
8:17
the word of the lord was shown that he
8:19
wasn't pleased
8:20
with the people okay so this is what we
8:24
are dealing with at this moment so let's
8:25
go on to the next
8:26
slide so samuel
8:29
favored by god if you go back to verse 2
8:32
scripture says
8:33
at that time eli whose eyesight had
8:36
begun to grow them so he could not see
8:38
was lying down in his own place the lamp
8:41
of god had not yet gone out
8:43
and samuel was lying down in the temple
8:45
of the lord
8:46
where the ark of god was now as i was
8:49
mentioning earlier
8:50
just because god isn't acting on our
8:52
timetable doesn't mean that he
8:54
isn't going to deal with sin so i want
8:56
you to pay attention to the highlighted
8:58
phrases
8:59
eli for example he is sleeping in his
9:02
own place
9:03
i suppose his house and a young samuel
9:06
who is probably maybe 10 or 12 years old
9:08
at the time he's lying down in the
9:09
temple of the lord
9:10
and not only that but next to the ark of
9:13
god
9:14
now here's the thing you need to pay
9:15
attention
9:17
only one time was anyone allowed in the
9:20
holy of holies because that's where the
9:21
ark of god was
9:23
okay only one time the year the day of
9:25
atonement
9:26
that's when the high priest was allowed
9:28
in the holy of holies
9:29
and not only that because when he went
9:30
in there he had to throw incense in the
9:32
air so that when
9:33
the glory of god came he wouldn't be
9:34
killed now imagine this
9:37
young samuel sleeps in the holy of
9:40
holies
9:41
and somehow that's accepted
9:44
that's acceptable like eli is not saying
9:46
no young man you can't sleep here
9:48
now how samuel ended up there is beyond
9:50
my comprehension i don't know how
9:52
because
9:53
according to the law no one was allowed
9:56
there but it shows something else it
9:59
shows
9:59
first that the people were so irreverent
10:02
that they didn't care
10:03
well second it shows that god had highly
10:06
favored samuel because he did not die
10:09
as a result now how do we know that
10:11
samuel had found favor
10:13
in the sight of the lord let's take a
10:15
look at verse four and six
10:16
and that will give us uh the clue
10:20
okay we're gonna go to verse four and
10:21
six now if you go to verse four what did
10:24
scripture says
10:25
then the lord called samuel and he said
10:28
here i am
10:29
and went to eli and said here i am for
10:31
you call me but he said
10:32
i did not call lie down again so he went
10:35
and lay down and the lord called again
10:38
samuel
10:39
and samuel rose and went to eli and said
10:41
here i am
10:42
for you called me well he said i did not
10:44
call my son lie down again
10:46
now the reason why samuel couldn't lie
10:49
next to the ark of
10:50
of god and not perish is because god had
10:53
already sealed him and ordained him
10:55
prior to his birth now if you go back to
10:58
um chapter one
11:02
verse uh first time in one verse eleven
11:04
this is what
11:05
hannah samuel's mother says she prayed a
11:07
prayer she said this
11:09
she vowed to vow and said o lord of
11:11
hosts if you will indeed to look on the
11:13
affliction of your servant and remember
11:15
me
11:15
and not forget your servant i will give
11:17
to your servant a son
11:19
then i will give him to the lord all the
11:21
days of his life and no razor
11:23
shall touch his head so samuel had been
11:25
ordained before his birth because his
11:27
mother prayed for him because remember
11:29
she was barren she couldn't have any
11:30
children
11:31
and she prayed into the temple she went
11:33
into the temple prayed and prayed and
11:35
god gave her that prayer because
11:37
that prayer was birthed from a desire
11:39
coming from god himself
11:40
because god was calling samuel before he
11:42
was even born he had prepared him
11:44
so he had god's favor okay so god had
11:48
already called sami from his mother's
11:49
womb
11:50
and now the lord was officially calling
11:52
him to ministry
11:54
verse 7 tells us on the following like
11:56
we're gonna read verse seven now
11:58
let's let's let's keep going now verse
12:00
seven says
12:02
now samuel did not yet know the lord
12:05
and the word of the lord had not yet
12:07
been revealed to him and this is
12:08
important to understand like
12:10
the call of god okay now the reason why
12:13
samuel didn't recognize the voice of the
12:15
lord is because
12:16
samuel did not know the lord and this
12:18
because
12:19
the word of god had not yet been
12:22
revealed to him
12:24
romans 10 7 says faith comes by hearing
12:27
and hearing by the word of god
12:30
basically god is the one who initiates
12:32
confirms
12:33
establishes and completes our calling
12:36
from beginning
12:36
to end remember what the scripture says
12:39
the righteous
12:39
shall live by faith right and romans 1
12:42
also say somewhere
12:44
for the righteousness of god is revealed
12:46
from faith
12:48
and for faith because god is the one who
12:51
produces the faith to believe in him and
12:53
god is the one who produces the faith
12:55
to trust in him he initiates all things
12:58
he begins the call and
12:59
ends it he completely he
13:02
he starts it and finishes it and he
13:05
reveals
13:06
himself to samuel samuel didn't have to
13:09
go
13:09
look for god because god is the one that
13:11
does the calling
13:13
because samuel would never be able to
13:15
serve and know the lord
13:16
apart from god perfecting that in him
13:20
i don't want to use excessive words to
13:22
explain this but this verse is showing
13:23
us that our salvation
13:26
is 100 percent the work of the godhead
13:29
from beginning to end now if you look at
13:31
john 6
13:32
44 scripture says no one can come to me
13:36
this is jesus speaking unless the father
13:38
who sent me draws him
13:40
listen to that again no one can come to
13:44
me
13:44
unless the father who sent me draws him
13:47
this is jesus speaking
13:49
and john 6 65 seconds that he says this
13:52
is why i told you that no one can come
13:54
to me
13:56
unless it is granted him by the father
14:00
the reason why you believe in jesus and
14:02
actually are serving jesus today is
14:04
because
14:05
god chose to reveal the word of the lord
14:08
to you
14:10
because apart from that you are dead in
14:12
sin in your transgressions
14:14
so we can't we can't accept god
14:18
unless the spirit himself does the work
14:21
of regeneration in our heart and mind to
14:23
to make us love the things of god
14:24
because by nature
14:26
we hate god
14:29
we are born with a bias the bias is this
14:33
we don't like the things of god we don't
14:35
love the things of god
14:36
we love ourselves and then god has to do
14:40
the what he changes our the disposition
14:42
of our heart he changes our mindset he
14:44
changes everything through his holy
14:46
spirit
14:46
and reveals the beauty of jesus christ
14:49
and we receive it by faith and we say
14:51
damn everything else i want god
14:55
so the only reason why you and i can
14:56
receive the salvation is because god
14:59
himself has called us by his grace
15:02
because he's undeserved because you and
15:04
i by nature we are objects of wrath we
15:07
deserve god's wrath but he calls us
15:10
because of his mercy
15:11
and extend his grace to us and gives us
15:14
the grace and the faith to believe
15:16
the truth and then we see the beauty of
15:19
jesus christ and we accept this
15:20
sacrifice and we mourn over our sin
15:22
because now for the first time
15:24
we realize how much we've offended god
15:28
guys this is important to understand
15:30
these things okay
15:32
this is very very important to
15:34
understand these truths because we're
15:35
living in the day and age where
15:37
you've been told that are a good person
15:40
that god
15:40
loves you that god's love is
15:42
unconditional
15:44
if god's love was unconditional jesus
15:47
wouldn't have to die on the cross
15:48
it's because of our sins okay god
15:52
put his son on the cross because of you
15:55
and i what we did we committed sins
15:58
against him
15:59
and what we deserve is his wrath okay
16:02
god is not saving you from hell he's
16:04
saving you from his wrath
16:06
yes he saved me from hell but what i'm
16:08
saying is this is the wrath of god that
16:10
is coming to you
16:11
and god wants to save you from his wrath
16:14
and today if you hear his voice i will
16:16
encourage you to listen
16:18
and say lord forgive me of my sins
16:21
and give me the grace and the faith
16:24
trust
16:25
in your finished work on the cross
16:27
through jesus christ that's the only way
16:29
we have
16:30
that's all we have that's the only
16:32
savior that we have
16:33
there is no other name under heaven by
16:35
which a man can be saved by the name of
16:37
jesus christ
16:39
so don't let anybody fool you this is
16:41
serious
16:43
we're living in a very very very bad
16:45
time now this is the worst time
16:47
in our history now apostasy the church
16:50
is corrupted
16:52
leaders don't even care to preach the
16:53
truth
16:55
they're just preaching a cotton candy
16:57
gospel telling you god loves you
17:00
yes god loves you enough to reveal
17:02
himself to you through his son
17:04
so that you may change your ways
17:06
salvation comes and it produces fruit in
17:08
your life so if you have no fruits of
17:09
the spirit
17:10
don't make any mistake you're not saved
17:12
because the scripture says
17:13
by their fruits you will know them i'm
17:16
not telling you anything i haven't gone
17:17
through myself
17:19
don't believe the lie god is real
17:22
and this and the wrath is real don't let
17:25
anybody fool you on it
17:27
this is real steph and if you hear his
17:29
voice today i would encourage you to
17:30
repent and say lord please forgive me
17:33
because we have forgotten what it means
17:35
to mourn over our sin
17:37
we don't mourn over our sins we actually
17:40
brought over our sins we want to tell
17:42
people about how bad we were and jesus
17:44
came to save us
17:45
we really want people to hear the bad
17:47
things that we do so kind of see our bad
17:49
reputation
17:50
in the process we throw in the gospel a
17:51
little bit but we really want them to
17:53
know what we've done
17:54
to kind of make us look like yeah i used
17:56
to be a bad man and then god came and
17:57
saved me
17:59
that means you haven't truly won over
18:00
your sin when you really blow over your
18:02
sins and just talk about it
18:03
with just no shame when you truly
18:06
understand that those sins and those
18:07
things that you committed
18:09
led jesus to bleed and die and be
18:12
separated from his dad
18:14
because of your sins and my sins and you
18:16
understand that he did this
18:18
to save you from the wrath of god then
18:21
the ultimate
18:22
response is to fall on your knees and
18:23
say whoa i
18:26
am
18:28
please i want you to pay attention
18:30
because there's too many
18:32
lies out there false gospels there are
18:34
promises
18:37
prosperity everything will be all right
18:40
god is okay with you
18:41
nah make no mistake god is holy he's
18:43
holding two ways he's holy because he's
18:44
set apart
18:45
and he's holy because he's morally
18:46
perfect
18:48
and this is what he came to do to make
18:50
us holy because he said
18:52
i am holy so i'll make you holy because
18:54
i'm holy you shall be holy
18:56
and god is in the process of sanctifying
18:58
you according to first says
18:59
thessalonians
19:01
4 chapter 4 i think verse 3 says this is
19:04
the will of god
19:05
your sanctification if there's no
19:07
sanctification in your life
19:09
you are not saved this is serious guys
19:13
and i want you to really take this
19:14
seriously and i'll see you next time
19:16
thank you
19:25
you
