Hebrews 5: 3, 9 -10 Jesus Christ Offered A Superior Sacrifice

Feb 19, 2025
Welcome back to our study of the book of Hebrews, today we’ll look at Hebrews 5:3, 9-10. And the title of this section is- Jesus offered a superior sacrifice. In the past couple of weeks, we’ve been looking at the function of the high priest. The writer has been comparing the former priests ( the levites) to Jesus. And in every category highlighted so far, ordination and compassion, we’ve established that Jesus Christ completely obliterated the levitical priesthood. We briefly introduced Melchizedek and saw that Jesus’ priesthood was established after the order of this mysterious figure of the Old Testament. Today the writer is going to zero in on the fact that Jesus offered a superior sacrifice to that of the levites.

hello good morning and happy monday
0:03
and then welcome back to our study of
0:05
the book of hebrews
0:06
we are now in chapter five
0:09
and in the last couple of weeks we've
0:11
seen uh and talked about some pretty
0:13
interesting on topics and concepts in
0:16
that chapter now
0:18
yesterday when i was at church
0:20
one of the elders asked me
0:22
who do i think wrote
0:24
the book of hebrews
0:26
and without a doubt i said i think it's
0:28
paul because when you listen and you see
0:30
the writing it seems as if paul was the
0:32
author now nobody knows who wrote the
0:34
book of hebrews but
0:36
there are strong evidences that it is
0:37
probably paul the apostle
0:40
okay so basically um we looked at
0:42
several things and i want to mention
0:44
them uh one at a time before we get into
0:47
the last thing that we
0:49
we are we're gonna talk about today and
0:51
this is uh basically in chapter five
0:53
from verse one through ten
0:55
and the writer is giving us and he's
0:57
contrasting on the levitical priesthood
1:00
to that of jesus because jesus as we saw
1:03
in chapter four is the great high priest
1:05
and that he has passed through the
1:07
heavens and he's seated at the right
1:09
hand of god because he may after he made
1:11
purification for sins
1:12
god gave him the name that is above
1:14
every name that are the name of christ
1:16
every knee shall bow and everything
1:18
confesses that he is lord to the glory
1:20
of god the father so he is seated at the
1:23
right hand of god and he ministers not
1:25
in the earthly tabernacle as we saw
1:27
but he ministers
1:29
in the heavenly realm this is where he
1:31
is and he has created an access for us
1:34
so as a result of christ and his
1:36
sacrifices his work on the cross we have
1:39
access to the throne of grace in chapter
1:41
4
1:41
verse 14 to 16 those verses are said to
1:44
you a couple of weeks ago that they
1:46
stuck with me because the scripture says
1:48
that because of what jesus has done
1:50
because he has passed through the
1:52
heavens and because of his humanity and
1:54
because he understands the human
1:56
experience we have a great high priest
1:58
who is not unable to sympathize with our
2:01
weaknesses so before i get into that i
2:03
just kind of want to give you a recap of
2:04
what we looked at okay
2:06
so let's do that right now i'm gonna try
2:08
and get my board ready here so you guys
2:10
can see okay so the first thing we
2:11
talked about is in hebrews chapter five
2:14
verse one and verse four through six we
2:17
saw that jesus ordination was superior
2:19
to that of aaron the lyrical priesthood
2:22
and then we also saw
2:24
that uh in in two last week in hebrews
2:27
chapter 5 verse 2 and verse 73 we linked
2:30
those and we saw that jesus revealed a
2:33
greater sympathy than the levi
2:37
the levites priest we saw that and then
2:39
today we're going to talk about we're
2:41
going to look at verse 3 and link it to
2:44
verse 9 and 10 and we're going to see
2:46
that jesus offered
2:48
a greater and superior sacrifice to
2:50
aaron so that's what we're going to be
2:52
focusing on today so what i'm going to
2:54
do is i'm going to read this scripture
2:55
and then we're going to get into it
2:56
we're going to zero in on chapter 5
2:59
verse 3 and verse 9 through 10 because
3:01
in these three different aspects we see
3:04
that jesus completely obliterates and
3:07
this
3:08
it is more he's more superior to the
3:10
levites in every category that we've
3:12
seen we saw the ordination we saw the
3:15
sympathy and today we're going to look
3:16
at the sacrifice so that's what we're
3:18
going to be doing today okay so without
3:20
further ado what i'm going to do is i'm
3:21
going to read the passage and then we're
3:24
going to get into that so i'm going to
3:25
read
3:26
hebrew chapter 5 verse 1 through 10 as a
3:28
way to kind of refresh your memory and
3:30
my memory and then we're gonna get into
3:32
understanding verse three and verse nine
3:34
through ten so let me read on the
3:36
scripture
3:38
now the scripture says
3:40
for every high priest chosen from among
3:43
men
3:44
is appointed
3:45
to act on behalf of man
3:47
in relation to god to offer
3:50
gifts and sacrifices for sins
3:53
now he can deal gently with the ignorant
3:55
and wayward since he himself is beset
3:59
with weakness
4:00
because of this he is obligated
4:04
to offer sacrifice for his own sins
4:07
just as he does for those of the people
4:10
and no one takes this honor for himself
4:13
but only when called
4:15
by god just as aaron was
4:18
so also christ did not exalt himself
4:21
to be made a high priest but was
4:23
appointed by him who said to him you are
4:26
my son today i have begotten you
4:29
as he also says in another place
4:32
you are a priest forever
4:34
after the order of melchizedek
4:37
in the days of his flesh
4:39
jesus offered her prayers and
4:41
supplications
4:42
with loud cries and tears to him who was
4:46
able to save him from death
4:48
and he was heard because of his
4:50
reverence
4:51
although he was a son he learned
4:53
obedience through what he suffered and
4:56
being made perfect he became the source
4:58
of eternal salvation to all who obey him
5:03
being designated by god
5:05
a high priest after
5:07
the order of melchizedek
5:11
and this is the word of god please
5:13
receive it as so
5:15
so now we're going to try to dissect
5:17
each one of these verses so we're going
5:19
to look at verse 3
5:21
okay this the scripture tells us in
5:22
verse 3
5:23
because of this he is obligated to offer
5:27
sacrifice for sins
5:29
just as he does for those of the people
5:32
and what we've been looking at is the
5:34
function of the high priest
5:36
and then last week uh we saw that the
5:39
one attribute that he had to have was
5:41
compassion the high priest had to be
5:43
compassionate and the reason why is
5:45
because the high priest um could
5:48
sympathize with people because he
5:49
himself was a human so he could be
5:52
sympathetic and had compassion for his
5:55
fellow humans
5:56
and and and that's because
5:59
he himself experienced the same
6:01
weaknesses they experienced and we
6:02
talked about how jesus christ on the day
6:05
in the day of his flesh he
6:08
he uh also went through the same thing
6:09
that we went through without sinning so
6:11
that's what makes him different from the
6:13
the hype the priest the levite priest so
6:16
now because
6:18
of the weaknesses because of the
6:20
fallibility of the high priest and and
6:22
the people uh he led the high priest had
6:26
to sacrifice and had to offer sacrifices
6:28
for his sins
6:30
and that and that of the people so he he
6:32
didn't just offer sacrifices for the
6:34
people since because he himself was also
6:36
beset with sin so therefore he had to
6:38
offer sacrifices for his own sins
6:41
and we talked about
6:44
the duty of the priest so he had to he
6:46
ministered in the holy place and when
6:48
people brought their sacrifices he he
6:50
was the one that i would take care of uh
6:53
then put it in in the altar of offering
6:55
and that's what the priest did but once
6:56
a year only the high priest went into
6:58
the holy of holies and before he went
7:00
into the holy of holies he first had to
7:02
offer sacrifices for his own sins and
7:04
that's because he went there uh to offer
7:07
and to atone for the sins of the people
7:09
that's what he did once a year i think
7:11
the day of atonement was called yonko
7:12
paul so we talked about that briefly
7:14
we're going to get into that into detail
7:16
in the later chapters but today what
7:18
we're only saying is that
7:20
because the high priest himself is beset
7:22
with sin and beset with weakness
7:24
he had to offer sacrifices for his own
7:28
sins and then for the sins of the people
7:31
say
7:32
so god as we see instituted the
7:34
sacrificial system to show his grace
7:37
even before the advent of christ god was
7:39
shown his grace okay even before christ
7:41
came and before the subsequent glories
7:44
on the cross when he went on the cross
7:45
and died for the sins of the world
7:46
before that god even made provisions for
7:48
the people saying listen this is a
7:50
shadow of the things to come but again
7:53
god shows his grace even in the old
7:55
testament and we'll see in later
7:57
chapters that the sacrificial system
7:59
could not expect since it couldn't take
8:02
away since all he did was served as an
8:04
as a covering so that people's people
8:07
could be ceremonially claimed that's all
8:09
he did he could not really take away
8:10
sins this is why the high priest had to
8:13
go back every year and at home for the
8:14
same other people every year on
8:16
yonkapoor he had to do that because
8:19
the blood of lames and goats could not
8:21
take away since all he did was serve as
8:23
a covering
8:25
in the meantime until jesus himself
8:27
comes okay so that's what we're gonna
8:29
see later on so people were externally
8:32
claimed as a result of the
8:34
sacrificial system but the guilt of sin
8:36
still remained because the blood of good
8:40
and the blood of bulls could not take
8:42
away sins and i gotta say we're gonna
8:44
look more closely into that but as of
8:46
now all we see is that the high priest
8:49
in those days had to offer sacrifices
8:51
for himself and for the sins or the
8:54
people and all he shows us is that the
8:56
sacrificial system was weak and the
8:59
reason for it is is because
9:02
it can take away sins and this is why
9:05
the writer is making that observation
9:07
okay the people were being tempted to go
9:09
back to the sacrificial system and we
9:12
talked about why he wrote he wrote like
9:14
hebrews chapter five see the people who
9:16
have been persecuted and the temptation
9:18
was to go back to the sacrificial system
9:20
because that's all they knew so it was
9:22
more comfortable for them to do that and
9:24
so the writer is showing them here
9:26
you're saying to them listen don't go
9:27
back to the old system because that
9:29
system
9:30
could not
9:31
take away since it was weak in the sense
9:34
that all he did was served as a covering
9:36
and he did nothing for you but he showed
9:38
us we saw in the last couple of weeks
9:40
that jesus
9:42
not only had a superior ordination
9:44
because he was a
9:46
high priest in the order of melchizedek
9:48
we also saw that he was more sympathetic
9:50
so he's telling them why do you go back
9:52
to one system that was so weak and that
9:54
could not really do anything for you
9:56
stick with what i've told you so he's
9:58
really encouraging and exhausting the
9:59
people to not go back to that system
10:01
because
10:02
the blood of lames and the blood of good
10:05
could not take away sins okay and he had
10:08
to prove to them that this system was
10:09
over with and therefore he compares it
10:11
to the perfect sacrifice of jesus on the
10:14
cross and that's going to lead us to
10:16
verses 9 and 10. so in verses 9 and 10
10:20
we read on the following and being made
10:22
perfect
10:23
he became the source of eternal
10:25
salvation to all who obey him being
10:28
designated by god a high priest after
10:32
the order of melchizedek now here's the
10:34
thing
10:36
jesus didn't have to offer sacrifices
10:38
for himself
10:39
because he is
10:41
without sin let me say that again
10:44
jesus unlike the other high priest did
10:48
not have to offer
10:50
sacrifices for himself because he is
10:52
without sin so he entered into the holy
10:54
of holies by his own blood because he is
10:56
worthy he is worthy he can do that
10:59
because he is sinless
11:01
the perfect son of god
11:03
so
11:04
and we we established that
11:06
after that after making purification for
11:08
sins he sat down at the writing of god
11:11
we saw that in chapter one that after he
11:13
made purification for sins because his
11:16
blood is that worthy
11:18
he sat down at the vein at the right
11:20
hand of god and the reason why god sat
11:22
in there is because
11:24
he was able to make purification for
11:25
sins so he sat down and god gave him the
11:29
name son he said today i've begotten you
11:32
okay you are my son
11:34
i'll be to him like a father he should
11:36
be to me a son and and then we saw that
11:38
in acts 13 and paul talks about it he
11:41
attributes those verses to jesus we're
11:42
going to see that in a little bit so we
11:44
also saw that god given the name son
11:46
which i just mentioned at the
11:47
resurrection god glorified the humanity
11:50
of jesus by bestowing upon it the name
11:52
that is above every name and by sitting
11:55
him at his right hand
11:56
and we saw that jesus had passed through
11:59
the heavens so we also established that
12:01
so he didn't have to offer
12:03
any sacrifices for himself because he is
12:07
sinless not like the other high priest
12:10
they were beset with sins the succumb to
12:12
sins we saw how aaron fell he led the
12:15
people into sin he made a golden calf
12:18
and then led them to sin
12:19
okay and we sought out how eli was
12:22
pretty much uh sometimes indifferent to
12:25
the to the sufferings of the people
12:27
because he was so callous and we saw
12:29
that jesus because he's sinless he he is
12:32
more affected by the effects of sin in
12:35
the sense that affected know that sin
12:37
bothers him in the point where sin is
12:39
going to do something to him no but sins
12:42
lead him to come to be compassionate and
12:44
to understand the human experience
12:45
because he understand as a sinless human
12:48
he is more affected by the colors things
12:50
that he sees in the world and that leads
12:52
him to want to do
12:54
everything that his father has called
12:55
him to do because he said i came to do
12:58
the will of my father my food is to do
13:00
the will of him who sent me so he came
13:02
to be the propitiation and the expiation
13:04
for our sins because the sacrificial
13:07
system was weak so in verse 9 so the
13:10
writer informs us that jesus has become
13:12
the source
13:13
of eternal salvation to all who obey the
13:17
truth meaning to all who put their trust
13:20
in jesus because he has been made
13:22
perfect
13:24
now people may hear them go
13:26
how can we be made perfect if he's
13:29
already perfect okay so we need to
13:31
understand what
13:33
uh me being made perfect means
13:35
see in hebrews chapter 2 verse 10 we
13:38
read something similar it says for it
13:40
was feeling that he
13:42
for whom and by whom all things exist in
13:45
bringing many sons to glory
13:48
should make the founder of that
13:50
salvation perfect through suffering so
13:53
basically what this means is this to
13:55
reconcile us to god
13:57
okay in bringing ministers to glory to
13:59
reconcile us to god it was necessary
14:02
that jesus died he was feeling that he
14:05
became sin for us so that we might
14:06
become the righteousness of god see
14:10
jesus was made perfect in the sense that
14:11
he was made complete
14:13
in that way he was made the complete
14:15
sacrifice he had to be this way there
14:17
was no other way because if he didn't
14:19
die
14:20
we would not be saved because the blood
14:22
of gods and the blood of flames could
14:25
not
14:26
take away sins
14:28
only the blood of jesus the lamb of god
14:30
can do that
14:31
so jesus had to die remember
14:34
we read in matthew that he said father
14:36
if it is possible for you all things are
14:38
possible yet know my will that will be
14:40
done and there was no other way so he
14:43
had to
14:44
drink the cup of the wrath of god
14:46
because without it we would not be saved
14:49
today
14:50
so the work of salvation was made
14:52
complete meaning perfect was made
14:54
perfect was made complete when jesus
14:56
breathed his last on the cross and said
14:59
it is finished okay we read in john 19
15:02
30. the scripture said when jesus had
15:05
received the sour wine he said
15:08
it is finished and he bowed his head and
15:11
gave up his spirit
15:14
god accepted his suffrage his sacrifice
15:17
on the cross and he became this only
15:19
source of salvation eternal salvation to
15:21
those god has called
15:24
those will be the truth those who put
15:26
their trust completely in jesus and on
15:29
his work on the cross see the former
15:31
high priest could not do that
15:34
because first of all we saw that they
15:36
were cut off because of death they died
15:39
okay they were weakened by their own
15:40
sinful nature and couldn't offer but
15:43
only a covering for sins that's all they
15:45
could do
15:46
well when jesus dies once and for all
15:49
and he accomplished an eternal salvation
15:52
to those who obey him and verse 10
15:54
pretty much gives us like a reminder of
15:56
who he is he is he's a high priest in
15:59
the order of melchizedek and we talked
16:01
about melchizedek a couple of weeks ago
16:03
and we're going to talk more deeply
16:04
about melchizedek in in chapters to come
16:07
but as we see here
16:09
jesus sacrifice
16:10
was pleasing
16:12
complete and perfect in the father's
16:14
eyes because the scripture also says
16:16
somewhere in isaiah that he pleased the
16:19
father to
16:20
to to pierce him he pleased him because
16:23
he was he pleased the father in all the
16:25
sense that god took pleasure in like oh
16:28
evil pleasure no no you satisfied the
16:30
wrath of god god said i am pleased with
16:32
him remember god always said about jesus
16:36
this is my beloved son
16:38
with whom i'm well pleased listen to him
16:40
so when he took upon himself the sins of
16:43
the whole world when he died and shed
16:45
his blood
16:46
that satisfied the wrath of god so this
16:49
is why
16:50
jesus blood and his sacrifice far exceed
16:54
that of the levitical priesthood and the
16:56
sacrificial system that was not enough
16:59
he only covered since he never took away
17:01
sin he never experienced they expected
17:04
sins see when he when jesus spread his
17:06
hand
17:08
like this on a cross you mean god took
17:10
away our sins as far as the east is from
17:12
the west
17:13
god took that away and the sacrificial
17:16
system was symbolic he was supposed to
17:18
show what god was going to do through
17:20
jesus
17:21
because i told you on the day of
17:23
atonement there were two goods that were
17:25
presented
17:26
one to satisfy the wrath of god and the
17:28
other one to take away the guilt and you
17:31
pressed your hand on the one
17:33
on the one lame that took away the guilt
17:35
and it's they took him out and sent it
17:37
and sent it away into perdition so
17:39
that's what god does
17:40
god took away our sins
17:42
because of the blood of jesus he
17:44
satisfied the wrath of god the
17:46
propitiation and he also took away the
17:48
guilt because his blood is that worthy
17:53
okay this is
17:54
the precious blood of the lamb of god
17:56
this is why
17:58
the writer is telling his readers listen
18:01
you go back to the old system
18:03
that is
18:04
weak and that's gonna not gonna do
18:06
anything for you
18:08
because that system is weak because it
18:10
was weakened by the the high priest and
18:13
by the insufficiency insufficiency of
18:15
the blood of lamb and god he could not
18:17
take away sins it cannot take away sins
18:20
it only served as a covering so that
18:22
people could be ceremonially clean and
18:24
could be externally clean that's all he
18:26
did he never took away the guilt
18:29
of sin he never took that away he
18:31
couldn't only the blood of jesus can do
18:33
that so this is why his blood is worthy
18:36
and and because he is the only way the
18:39
scripture says i am the way the truth
18:41
and the life and no one comes to the
18:43
father except through me and this is
18:46
jesus speaking
18:47
so that's what his blood has
18:48
accomplished on our behalf to satisfy
18:51
the wrath of god and to take away sins
18:54
only in jesus there is forgiveness of
18:56
sins
18:58
that's it there is no other way he is
19:00
the only way and he's the only one that
19:02
can offer eternal salvation
19:05
for all those god has called and those
19:07
who obey the truth
19:09
and i kind of want to go
19:11
into on some passages here i want to go
19:13
to acts 13 verse 33 to 40 to kind of
19:16
solidify what we are talking about this
19:18
morning so let me read that first
19:22
the scripture says
19:23
this he has fulfilled to us referring to
19:26
god
19:27
their children by raising jesus
19:29
as also it is written in the second song
19:32
you are my son today i have begotten you
19:36
and as as for the fact that he raised
19:38
him from the dead no more to return to
19:40
corruption he has spoken in this way
19:42
i'll give you the holy and sure
19:44
blessings of david
19:46
therefore he also says in another song
19:49
you will not let your holy one seek
19:50
corruption for david after he had served
19:53
the purpose of god in his own generation
19:56
fell asleep and was laid with his
19:58
fathers and a son saw corruption or
20:00
decay but he whom god raised up did not
20:03
see corruption let it be known to you
20:05
therefore brothers that through this man
20:08
forgiveness of sins he pro is proclaimed
20:10
to you and by him everyone who believes
20:14
is freed from the from everything from
20:16
which you could not be freed by the law
20:19
of moses
20:20
beware therefore lest what is said in
20:23
the prophet should come about
20:26
so what is paul saying here
20:28
so basically um
20:30
i just want to make some comments in
20:32
passing okay in verses 34 and 35 we are
20:35
told about the fact that jesus rose to
20:38
die
20:39
no more which agrees with what we just
20:41
read in the book of hebrews
20:44
he died once and for he was raised he
20:47
will never die again because he's a high
20:49
priest in the order of melchizedek so
20:51
his life
20:52
cannot be interrupted anymore he only
20:55
died once and for all to satisfy the
20:57
wrath of god and to expedite our sins
21:00
and after that this is it now he
21:02
ministers in the heavenly realm so this
21:04
is why
21:05
the sacrificial system is over with we
21:08
have a better covenant now in jesus
21:11
because he has passed through the
21:13
heavens and he his life is not going to
21:15
be interrupted
21:16
just like the high priest the high
21:18
priest were dying but he won't die
21:20
anymore he died once and for all for a
21:22
specific purpose
21:24
to satisfy the wrath of god and to take
21:27
away the guilt of sins i know i keep
21:29
repeating myself but i want you to get
21:31
it so he died once for sins and he rose
21:34
and has been now
21:36
glorified and his kingdom has been
21:39
established
21:40
for
21:41
ever and we we're gonna see that in
21:43
first chronicles 17. see
21:46
paul
21:47
brings the example of david see david
21:50
died and saw corruption meaning when
21:52
david died his body decayed he was
21:54
decomposed
21:55
that happened to david so he was buried
21:58
and he was decomposed when jesus died he
22:02
didn't see decay he didn't see the
22:03
decomposition he didn't have because god
22:06
did not allow that because god raised
22:08
him on the third day according to the
22:10
scripture and glorified his humanity and
22:13
made him a high priest after the order
22:16
of melchizedek one whose ministry is
22:19
endless it would never end again and i
22:22
want us to go to first chronicles 17
22:24
verse 1 to 15 to see the promise god
22:26
gave david concerning his offspring
22:29
meaning jesus according to the flesh so
22:31
let's go there
22:33
listen
22:34
so the scripture says now when david
22:36
lived in his house
22:38
david said to nathan the prophet behold
22:41
i dwell in the house of cedar but the
22:43
ark of the covenant of the lord is under
22:46
a tent
22:47
and nathan said to david do all that is
22:50
in your heart for god is with you but
22:53
that same night the word of the lord
22:55
came to nathan
22:56
go and tell my servant david
22:59
thus says the lord it is not you who
23:02
will build me a house to dwell in
23:04
for i have not lived in a house since
23:06
the day i brought up israel
23:08
to this day
23:09
but i've gone from 10th to 10th and from
23:12
dwelling to dwelling in all places where
23:14
i've moved with all israel did i speak a
23:17
word with any of the judges of israel
23:19
whom i commanded to shepherd my people
23:21
saying
23:22
why have you not built me a house of
23:24
cedar
23:25
now therefore thus you shall say to my
23:27
servant david thus says the lord of
23:29
hosts
23:30
i took you from the pasture from
23:32
following the sheep to be prince of ma
23:34
of my people israel and i have been with
23:37
you wherever you have gone
23:39
and i've cut off all your enemies from
23:41
before you and i'll make for you a name
23:44
like the name of the great ones of the
23:46
earth and i'll point and i will appoint
23:48
a place for my people israel
23:51
and will plant them that they may dwell
23:53
in their own place and be disturbed no
23:55
more and violent men shall waste them no
23:58
more as formally from the time that our
24:00
opponent judges over my people israel
24:03
and i'll subdue all your enemies
24:06
moreover i declare to you that the lord
24:08
will build you a house now listen
24:10
carefully to the next word
24:12
when your days are fulfilled to work
24:14
with your fathers
24:16
i
24:17
will raise up your offspring after you
24:20
one of your own sons
24:22
and i will establish his kingdom
24:24
now this applies
24:27
uh
24:28
directly in to
24:30
uh solomon but also ultimately to jesus
24:33
because listen to the next words
24:36
he shall build a house for me which
24:39
solomon did
24:40
but then listen to the next one and i
24:42
will establish his throne
24:44
for
24:45
foreign this applies to jesus ultimately
24:50
this is what the scripture says he has
24:52
been established forever
24:54
not temporary
24:56
it's not a temporal kingdom that jesus
24:57
has he has a forever eternal kingdom
25:00
everlasting
25:01
and listen i will be to him a father and
25:04
he shall be to be a son i will not take
25:06
my steadfast lord from him as i took it
25:08
from him who was before you but i will
25:10
confirm him in my house and in my
25:13
kingdom again
25:14
for
25:15
ever
25:16
and his throne shall be established for
25:19
ever in accordance with all his words in
25:22
accordance with all his vision nathan
25:25
spoke to david so you can see that from
25:28
all the way even all the way to the old
25:30
testament the scripture
25:32
always ascribed to jesus
25:35
a ministry that is forever because he is
25:38
after the order of melchizedek so his
25:40
ministry is endless because he has
25:43
passed through the heavens and his blood
25:45
is worthy and we saw that so what should
25:47
i say in conclusion
25:49
we can see that the former high priest
25:51
were weakened by their own sinful nature
25:54
i couldn't offer but only a covering for
25:56
sins
25:57
jesus
25:59
died once and for all and accomplished
26:01
an eternal salvation to those who obey
26:03
him
26:04
and that that's all i can say here
26:06
because the former high priest they
26:08
could not establish what jesus did they
26:10
could not because jesus has passed
26:13
through the heavens because of his own
26:14
blood because he entered the holy of
26:16
holies and when he died the scripture
26:19
says the veil was torn from top to
26:21
bottom to show that god himself is the
26:23
one that tore it and said this is it now
26:26
we have access into the throne of grace
26:29
so because jesus offered a greater
26:32
sacrifice
26:34
these things that we are speaking of
26:36
this morning are not just for our
26:38
intellectual knowledge
26:40
but
26:41
it has to transform the way we live our
26:43
lives
26:45
if it doesn't do that for you or for me
26:47
then all you're doing is just talking
26:49
and we we know the information
26:51
cognitively
26:52
but if it doesn't
26:53
translate into how we live
26:56
then just use less information
26:58
and my prayer
26:59
for myself and for you is that
27:02
as you get into the word of god and as
27:04
you read this thing it will lead you to
27:06
your knees
27:07
because we really truly have a high
27:09
priest who has passed through the
27:11
heavens
27:12
and he is established in the heavens
27:15
and the scripture says for us to come to
27:17
the throne of grace to receive mercy and
27:19
grace to help in time of need
27:20
because we are called to come because
27:22
jesus understands the human experience
27:25
he has
27:26
authentic uh compassion for people like
27:29
you and i who are weakened by our sinful
27:31
nature
27:32
and he has passed through the heavens
27:34
for us so that we can have access so
27:37
that we can ask for help
27:39
don't be proud
27:41
i will say when you need help go to god
27:44
and be willing to listen
27:46
now when we ask god for guidance
27:49
we expect things to come to us maybe in
27:52
a dream or something
27:54
we have his word
27:55
so i say start with his word
27:58
start with by obeying the truth the word
28:00
of god is there for our sake he says the
28:02
scripture is good for what for teaching
28:04
so that the man of god may through may
28:06
be totally equipped for every good work
28:08
so when you are struggling with a
28:10
certain question
28:11
sometimes it's not as clear
28:13
as the law for guidance and he will
28:15
surely guide you because he the
28:16
scripture tells us to
28:19
if anyone lacks wisdom
28:21
ask god who gives wisdom to all
28:23
generously without finding fault and he
28:25
will give but when we ask we should not
28:27
doubt the scripture says he would doubt
28:29
it's like the waves of the sea
28:31
and dimension i think he will receive
28:33
anything from the lord because he's um
28:35
double-minded we can't have our own mind
28:38
we can't have our own plan and just we
28:40
want god to bless the plan we have to
28:42
submit
28:43
to his plan we have to submit to his
28:45
leadership we have to come under his
28:46
authority because jesus is the high
28:48
priest and when jesus says go this way
28:51
that means we need to go that way
28:53
because he died he paid the penalty for
28:55
my sins and your sins so how dare we
28:58
be irreverent we have to learn to obey
29:02
the word of god and it's a daily thing
29:04
because we still live in this body
29:07
we still live in the in this corrupted
29:09
body so
29:10
we are bothering every day
29:12
for the christian life becomes hard
29:14
because
29:15
when we weren't saved it was easy for us
29:17
to sin because we just did it it was
29:19
just our nature
29:21
but now that uh the spirit of god lives
29:23
in us there is a battle between the holy
29:26
spirit and the fleshly nature
29:29
but the holy spirit always wins because
29:31
he's greater but there is that tug of
29:33
war there's always like this this this
29:35
uh this there are daily decisions
29:37
constantly we have to constantly go to
29:39
the lord and say lord is this pleasing
29:40
to you if i do this
29:42
so jesus has established that for us so
29:45
the only thing we can do as a result is
29:48
to live in total submission to his
29:50
leadership
29:51
all right so have a wonderful day and
29:53
i'll see you next week thank you
