Visit https://tayibs.com/ for more lectures There are several passages in which Jesus was asked to authenticate himself, and he responded favorably to some of the requests and disregarded the others. Today I want to specifically zero in on three instances where Jesus was questioned about His identity, one in the Old Testament and two in the New Testament. My whole objective in doing this is to show that the righteous shall live by faith. We are told in Romans 10:17 that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. hello good morning this is tae-hee at IU
0:02
calm and this morning we're going to be
0:05
talking about questions of identity when
0:08
it comes to our Lord Himself we're gonna
0:11
look into scriptures and see how Jesus
0:13
responded to questions about his
0:16
identity or deity so we're gonna talk
0:19
about it because it's important to know
0:21
and the reason why I'm doing this is
0:23
because scripture says that faith comes
0:26
by hearing again by the word of God and
0:29
now more than ever it's imperative that
0:31
we learn to listen and know the voice of
0:34
the Lord because there are too many
0:35
voices in our head and it's hard
0:37
sometimes to figure out who is speaking
0:39
is it me is it the Lord is it the enemy
0:42
who is speaking to me so when Jesus was
0:44
asked questions he knew when to
0:47
recognize when they request was from the
0:49
Lord himself or the request floats from
0:52
Maine and he knew how to answer that so
0:55
when he came to his identity so we're
0:57
gonna look at certain passages and we're
0:59
gonna talk about that this morning
1:01
okay so follows my presentation on the
1:04
screen there now in the background like
1:08
I said there are several passages
1:10
passages in which Jesus was asked to
1:13
authenticate himself and he responded
1:16
favorably to some of the requests and
1:18
disregarded on the others today I want
1:22
to specifically zero in on three
1:24
instances where Jesus was questioned
1:26
about his identity and one of those is
1:29
in the Old Testament and two in the New
1:31
Testament and my whole objective in
1:34
doing so is to show that the righteous
1:36
shall live by faith because we are told
1:39
in Romans 10:17 that faith comes by
1:43
hearing and hearing by the Word of God
1:44
so let's jump into Gideon's call now
1:50
we're gonna talk about the instance in
1:52
in the Old Testament when Jesus was
1:54
asked to authenticate himself now you
1:58
are wording in the Old Testament there
1:59
are times where the Old Testament
2:02
mentions the angel of the Lord and the
2:04
word of the Lord and those are times
2:06
where Jesus himself before he actually
2:09
comes later in the New Testament
2:13
he appears to people in several
2:16
instances when Joshua saw there the
2:18
commander of the armies of the Lord and
2:20
when Abraham saw the lord himself and
2:23
when when he went to Sodom and Gomorrah
2:27
so Jesus had been coming before his
2:29
actual coming he was appearing to people
2:33
and we're gonna look at the instance
2:35
where he appeared to Gideon so let's
2:37
look at that now the background this is
2:40
in judges 6 now the people of Israel are
2:43
under the Dominion of day of the
2:45
Midianite because they've abandoned
2:47
their first law and are worshipping
2:50
idols so finally they cry out to the
2:52
Lord for help and the Lord prepares a
2:55
man to save them and this man is Gideon
2:57
so we're gonna really account in judges
3:00
6 verse 11 to 24 scripture says now the
3:04
angel of the Lord came and sat under the
3:07
turbine at Ofra which belonged to Jewish
3:11
lay up years right while his son Gideon
3:14
was beaten our wheat in the winepress to
3:16
hide it from the Midianites and the
3:19
angel of the Lord appeared to him and
3:21
said to him the Lord is with you o
3:24
mighty man of Valor and helium say to
3:27
please my lord if the Lord is with us
3:30
why then has all this thing happened to
3:32
us and where all is wonderful deeds
3:35
there are fathers recounted to us saying
3:37
did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt
3:40
well now the Lord has forsaken us and
3:44
given us into the hand of median and the
3:46
Lord turned to him and said go in this
3:50
mire of yours and save Israel from the
3:52
hand of median do I not send yet now I
3:55
want to quickly show you something here
3:56
first the scripture started with the
3:58
angel of the Lord right and then he goes
4:00
from God to say here and the Lord turned
4:03
to him so the angel of the Lord and the
4:05
Lord are the same so this is again the
4:08
pre pre Christ before Christ actually
4:10
came I don't know if I'm using the
4:12
terminology on the right way but Christ
4:14
was appearing to people before he
4:17
actually came as a baby so and we're
4:21
gonna pick it up from verse 15 I just
4:24
wanted to make that point and he
4:26
said to him please Lord how can I save
4:29
Israel behold my clan is the weakest in
4:32
Manasseh and I am the least in my
4:35
father's house and the Lord Satan but I
4:39
will be with you he shall strike the
4:44
Midianite as one main so God is saying I
4:47
will be with you get in so let's go to
4:50
the next continued and he say to him
4:54
that's Gideon
4:55
if now I found favor in your eyes then
4:58
show me a sign that it is you who speak
5:01
with me please do not depart from here
5:04
until I come to you and bring out my
5:06
present and set it before me and he said
5:08
I will say I will stay till you return
5:11
so Gideon went into his house and
5:13
prepared a young goat and eleven cakes
5:15
from an ephah of flour the meat he put
5:18
in the basket and the broth
5:19
he put in a pot and brought them to him
5:22
under the terebinth and presented them
5:24
and the angel of God said home take the
5:27
meat and the unleavened cakes and put
5:28
them on his truck and pour the broth
5:31
over them and he did so then the angel
5:34
of the Lord reached out reached out the
5:36
tip of the staff that was in his hand
5:37
and touched the meat and the eleven
5:40
cakes
5:40
and fire sprang up from the rock and
5:42
consumed the meat and the unleavened
5:44
cakes and the angel of the Lord vanished
5:46
from his sight then Gideon perceived
5:49
that he was the angel of the Lord and
5:51
Gideon said alas o Lord God for now I've
5:55
seen the angel of the Lord face to face
5:57
but the Lord said home peace be to you
5:59
do not fear you shall not die then
6:02
Gideon built an altar there to the Lord
6:04
and called it the Lord's peace to this
6:07
day he still staying at Oprah which
6:09
belongs to the Arby's right now I
6:12
highlighted verse 17 and 18 because
6:14
Gideon at a point is trying to
6:17
authenticate the Lord to make sure it is
6:19
really the Lord
6:20
talking to him because let's let's put
6:22
it this way some man appears to Gideon
6:25
tell them go in this matter of yours and
6:27
save Israel you're gonna do this and
6:29
I'll be with you
6:30
and Gideon goes our wait a minute I
6:32
don't know we speaking to me I don't
6:34
know if this is the war I don't know if
6:36
this is just a delusional man I don't
6:38
know who are you
6:39
I don't know who you are and I don't
6:41
know you so I need to authenticate you
6:43
okay so this is what's going on it in a
6:46
head of Gillian because Gideon is now
6:49
doesn't know that he is in the presence
6:51
of the Lord Himself so let me expand on
6:54
that and and to make sure the Lord is
6:58
talking to him he asked for a specific
7:00
request he said wait here and let me
7:02
bring up my offerings to you so the
7:05
thing that we need to understand is this
7:07
no one but a priest on duty was
7:09
authorized receive an offer and offer
7:12
the burnt offering to the Lord
7:14
so basically Gideon knew that if the
7:17
Lord wasn't who he said he was he would
7:19
die okay so he was basically setting up
7:22
whoever was asking this question right
7:25
so we're gonna read a story of native
7:27
and I by you to understand this let's go
7:30
to Genesis Leviticus 10 one two three
7:34
scripture says now native and Abihu the
7:37
sons of Aaron each took his censer and
7:39
put fire in it and laid incense on it
7:42
and offered and they offered on
7:45
authorized fire before the Lord which he
7:48
had not commanded them and fire came out
7:51
from before the Lord and consumed them
7:53
and they died before the Lord then Moses
7:56
said Aaron this is what the Lord has
7:58
said among those who are near me I would
8:01
be sanctified and before all the people
8:02
I will be glorified and Aaron held his
8:05
peace now this is indeed abanda by who
8:09
they choose to offer on authorized fire
8:12
to the Lord he did not command him to do
8:14
that so they brined and died right now
8:17
in the case of Gideon he was doing the
8:20
same thing he's saying look you're
8:22
saying to me that you are the angel of
8:23
the Lord so I'm gonna bring my offerings
8:26
and I'm gonna set it before you if you
8:30
are not the angel of the Lord guess what
8:32
you will die Gideon was basically
8:35
testing this all right and this is what
8:38
was going on so near abandoned by you
8:41
like I said he died because they offered
8:43
on authorized fire which the Lord had
8:46
not commanded them
8:46
Gideon knew the story and he knew that
8:49
the man talking to him who suffer the
8:51
same fate if he was doing
8:52
that wasn't commanded by God in this
8:55
case accepting a burnt offering also the
8:58
priest was to wait until all the fat
9:01
from the meat was burned according to
9:03
the commands of the Lord then the priest
9:05
would be allowed to take portions of the
9:06
meat for himself but the angel of the
9:08
Lord the Lord Himself ingredients
9:10
account was refilled receiving all the
9:13
offering for himself making himself
9:15
equal to God so that was a serious thing
9:17
so Gideon knew that this was a serious
9:20
offense offense offense punishable by
9:24
immediate death so he wanted to be sure
9:26
that the man talking to him
9:28
wasn't delusional and the Lord responded
9:30
favorably by fulfilling the request so
9:34
God waited and Gideon brought his
9:36
offering and then he reached out the tip
9:38
of his staff and he came out and in
9:40
consumed the thing so Gideon knew for
9:43
sure that whoever was talking to him was
9:45
God himself right so that's the first
9:48
request and Jesus responded with favor
9:51
He fulfilled the request now let's look
9:54
at another instance before we draw our
9:56
conclusions in Matthew 14 verse 26 and
9:59
28 Jesus is walking on water and the
10:04
miserable same and Peter makes a request
10:06
let's read on the chapter but when the
10:10
disciples saw him walking on the sea
10:12
they were terrified and said it is a
10:14
ghost and they cried out in fear but
10:18
immediately Jesus spoke to them saying
10:20
take heart it is I do not be afraid and
10:24
Peter answered him lord if it is you
10:28
command me to come to you on the water
10:30
and he said come so Peter got out of the
10:33
boat and walked on the water and came to
10:35
Jesus now Peter knew that the only
10:38
person that could give a command I would
10:40
defy natural laws and that could be
10:43
executed through his body was Jesus
10:45
hence the request let me repeat that
10:48
again Peter knew that the only person
10:50
that could give a command that would
10:53
defy natural laws the way they did and
10:55
that could be executed in Peters own
10:59
body was Jesus hence the request because
11:01
Peter had already seen he's already seen
11:04
Jesus give commands
11:05
produced an action we can look at
11:07
Matthew 8 verse 5 to 13 when he had
11:11
entered Capernaum a Centurion came
11:13
forward to him appealing to him Lord my
11:15
servant is lying paralyzed at home
11:17
suffering terribly and he said to him I
11:20
will come and heal him but he said to me
11:22
replied Lord I'm not worthy to have you
11:24
come under my roof but only say the word
11:26
and my servant will be healed for I too
11:29
am a man under Authority with soldiers
11:32
under me and I say to one go and he goes
11:34
and to another come and he comes and to
11:37
my servant do this and he does it when
11:39
Jesus heard it he marvelled and said to
11:41
those follow those who followed him
11:43
truly I tell you you have no one in
11:45
Israel have I found such faith I'll tell
11:48
you many will come from east and west
11:49
and we try not table with Abraham Isaac
11:52
and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven so I
11:54
don't need to read the rest well you get
11:56
the point
11:56
so Peter have seen this okay Peter I've
12:00
seen this so the instance he had seen
12:04
this and and and II see he seen Jesus
12:06
performed miracles and he seen Jesus
12:08
give commands that were executed so he
12:11
wanted to authenticate Jesus and when he
12:13
said it
12:14
Jesus responded with favor so this is
12:16
the second time now this other time
12:19
Jesus does not respond in favor he
12:21
actually disregarded requests any
12:23
answers we've in a different question
12:25
this is when Jesus has been tempted in
12:28
Matthew 4 verse 2 to 4 the temptation of
12:31
the enemy himself now scripture says and
12:35
after fasting forty days and forty
12:37
nights he was hungry and the tempter
12:40
came and said to him if you are the son
12:42
of God command these stones to become
12:44
loaves of bread but he answered it is
12:47
written man shall not live by bread
12:49
alone but every word that comes from the
12:52
mouth of God now God the Father gives
12:54
satan permission to save jesus got the
12:56
man jesus didn't respond favorably to
12:59
the enemy because he knew how to
13:00
recognize the father's voice that's
13:02
that's critical he basically told satan
13:05
i don't listen to your voice I'll listen
13:07
and leave by every word that comes from
13:09
my father and before getting today we
13:13
les let's ask ourselves for a sign why
13:18
did say
13:19
ask for a sign now the question is this
13:22
he must have seen Jesus performed that
13:24
before and where and we think if you
13:27
look at first King 19 there's a clue
13:28
there Elijah is running from just Bell
13:33
and we're gonna pick up from there
13:34
scripture said well he himself went a
13:36
day's journey into the wilderness and
13:38
came and sat down under a broom tree and
13:41
he asked that he might die saying it is
13:43
enough now O Lord take away my life for
13:46
I'm no better than my father's and he
13:49
laid out and slept under a broom tree
13:50
and behold an angel touched him and said
13:53
to him arise and eat and he looked and
13:55
behold there was at his head a cake
13:57
baked on hot stones and a jar of water
13:59
and he ate and drank and lay down again
14:01
and the angel of the Lord came again a
14:03
second time and touched him and said
14:05
arise I need for the journey is too
14:07
great for you and he arose and ate and
14:09
drank and went into the Strand for the
14:11
food forty days and forty nights to
14:13
Horeb the Mount of God
14:15
usually when Scriptures refer to the
14:17
angel of the Lord Jesus he is referring
14:20
to the word of the Lord Himself God
14:21
incarnate Jesus
14:22
so Satan was busy saying the Jesus I've
14:25
seen you turn stone into bread for for
14:27
Elijah when he was tired depressed and
14:30
hungry if you leave this for Elijah
14:32
you ought to do also for yourself you
14:34
deserve it you are the son of God
14:36
prove it basically enticing Jesus to
14:39
question the father's goodness in order
14:41
to lead Jesus to be so Vegard father and
14:43
Jesus recognized the game and responded
14:47
with man shall not live by bread alone
14:49
but every word that comes from the mouth
14:52
of God in other words I don't take
14:54
comments from you Satan and I listen to
14:56
my father for I know my father's voice
14:58
and I don't get controlled I don't
15:00
control my hunger he was quoting out of
15:02
the branagh me 8 this is the drama me 8
15:05
that's where he happened when God
15:06
provided a manner the scripture says
15:08
that that allowed an Israelite to go
15:11
hungry in order to test them and t-shirt
15:13
and a man does not live by bread alone
15:15
but by every word I proceeded from the
15:17
mouth of God so Jesus was quoting it and
15:20
I gave him strength to resist the
15:22
temptation of hunger because the enemy
15:24
wanted to lead him to disobey God and to
15:27
listen to his voice
15:28
now that we fight the background said
15:31
les
15:32
ask yourself what leads God
15:36
what leads Jesus to respond different
15:40
ways with different requests about his
15:43
identity because that's the question
15:44
right so the key is this the enemy
15:48
wasn't planning on worshiping Jesus so
15:50
his request was in vain he wanted Jesus
15:53
to listen to us to him so he could brag
15:55
to God the Father about it see if just
15:58
says that if we ask anything according
15:59
to God's will he hears us and if God
16:02
hears us we know that we received
16:03
whatever we've asked of him that's in
16:06
first John 5:14 15 and scripture also
16:09
says that it is God who works in us to
16:13
will and to act according to his purpose
16:15
does philippians 2:13
16:17
therefore the only requests that God
16:20
listens to are the requests that he has
16:23
put on our hearts basically Gideon's
16:26
request was God given when Gideon said
16:28
to Jesus let me bring my offering it is
16:32
God who prompted Gideon's hard to
16:35
question the angel of the Lord's
16:36
identity and it is God Walsall prompted
16:40
Peters heart to authenticate domain
16:42
Jesus he saw walking on water
16:44
so therefore jesus answered those
16:48
prayers or those requests because they
16:50
were aligned with the will of the fact
16:53
his will to begin with and each of the
16:56
requests from Gillian and Peter was
16:58
meant to strengthen their faith and
17:01
trust in Jesus which is always the
17:03
Father's will so God said of his son
17:05
this is my beloved son with whom I am
17:07
well pleased
17:08
listen to him in the case of Satan it
17:10
was a vain request for Satan's own
17:12
treasure he didn't find strength in God
17:14
he did not write same didn't find his
17:17
traffic God so God I requested he asked
17:21
wasn't God given he was Satan's own fly
17:26
that came in a way he wanted to show
17:27
that God the Father this and I'm gonna
17:29
make your son listen to me
17:31
and the Lord responded with man does not
17:34
live by bread alone but by every word
17:36
that proceeds from the mouth of God now
17:39
why am I saying all these things this to
17:42
me really teaches us about how to pray
17:45
and what
17:46
for we must certainly ask God to give us
17:48
discernment it also gives us a picture
17:51
of our total dependence on God for all
17:54
things even prayer it is by faith in
17:57
other words we leave and do all things
18:00
even prayer by every word that proceeds
18:02
from the mouth of God how do we ask
18:05
anything according to his will is
18:06
because he has put those desires and
18:08
thoughts in our mind so in conclusion
18:11
what I'm gonna say is this now God
18:15
answers his own prayers in a sense that
18:18
he answers prayers that he has put on
18:20
our hearts to ask him so this is why a
18:23
lot of people go to the scripture and
18:24
the grab a scripture and say I'm
18:25
claiming this promise why things are not
18:27
happening the question is this what is
18:31
the desire to claim that request coming
18:33
from if that desire is coming from
18:35
yourself or your own mind or your own
18:38
thing for your own selfish desires
18:40
whatever they may be that's not going to
18:43
happen because God plans his desire in
18:45
you so that you can ask things according
18:48
to his will this is why Jesus says the
18:52
father seeks those who will worship Him
18:54
in spirit and in truth because the Holy
18:57
Spirit as we are told in Romans 8 we
18:59
don't even know what to ask for but he
19:02
Spirit Himself intercedes for us with
19:04
groanings too deep for word and he which
19:07
is God who searches our hearts nor the
19:10
minds of the Spirit because the spirit
19:11
prays in accordance with God's will so
19:15
our prayers must come from God's own
19:18
heart this is why God says in in in
19:22
things from 37 delight yourself in the
19:25
Lord and He will give you the desires of
19:26
your heart meaning when you find your
19:28
pleasure in God you begin to mold your
19:32
prayer and then your prayer begin to
19:35
come from his own heart because that's
19:36
what pleases him God is pleased with his
19:39
words in us Jesus says if my words
19:42
remain in you ask for anything and
19:44
you'll be given to you basically when
19:46
God's Word begin to dominate your mind
19:49
where his thoughts is perspective begin
19:51
to dominate your mind he'll begin to
19:53
form your prayer so your prayer begin to
19:56
reflect his character this is why it's
19:58
important to
19:59
understand what it means to live by
20:02
faith because you live by every word
20:05
that proceeds from the mouth of God
20:06
meaning his words I hope this makes
20:09
sense it was a lot of things to talk
20:11
about so go back and watch it again and
20:15
go back and read those scriptures
20:16
yourself and ask the Lord to give you
20:18
understanding okay so have a wonderful
20:19
day and I'll see you next
