In the 11th chapter of the book of Luke, we are told in v1-11,
Now Jesus[a] was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say:
“Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our daily bread,[b]
4 and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”
5 And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence[c] he will rise and give him whatever he needs. 9 And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
The particular verse of our interest is verse 9 and the question we ought to ask ourselves is this, what are we to ask for? That's what we are going to be investigating in today's presentation. Be sure to watch it in its entirety, see video

hello good morning and this is thaiba
0:02
tives.com
0:03
and welcome back to our study on uh look
0:06
11.
0:08
uh today we are going to be looking at
0:10
verse 9
0:11
which is the topic of our interest and
0:13
verse 9 reads
0:15
you can look on my screen it reads and i
0:18
tell you ask
0:19
and he'll be given to you seek and you
0:21
will find
0:22
knock and you'll be opened to you
0:26
now i've heard a lot of people a lot of
0:29
christians say what the bible say ask
0:32
and it shall be given to you sick
0:33
and you will find the knock and the dog
0:35
be open so you better ask
0:37
now what is jesus really teaching
0:40
in this chapter is what we need to know
0:42
and to understand that we have to look
0:43
at the context
0:45
in which the lord was speaking and then
0:47
why he said
0:48
those words we can't just pull the verse
0:50
out of context
0:51
and just apply it as a general rule we
0:54
need to understand
0:55
the mind of the lord because we are told
0:58
uh
0:59
through the book of timothy that we need
1:00
to correctly divide the word of god
1:03
okay and and our duty as believers is to
1:05
really understand what god is teaching
1:07
through these scriptures so we can
1:09
properly apply this
1:11
messages and verses to our lives okay
1:15
so i'm going to be going back on my uh
1:18
main screen
1:18
my study end you can see
1:22
i said ask and will be given to you and
1:25
the question
1:26
is ask for what and that's what we are
1:29
going to be talking about
1:31
so first i'm going to give you a quick
1:33
uh
1:34
background so if you look at let's go
1:37
back to look
1:38
and we're going to read this portion
1:41
verse i'm going to read from verse 1 to
1:44
verse 9.
1:45
now jesus was praying in a certain place
1:48
and when he finished
1:50
one of his disciples said to him lord
1:53
teach us to pray as john taught his
1:55
disciples
1:56
and he said to them when you pray say
2:00
father hallowed be your name your
2:03
kingdom come
2:04
give us each day each day our daily
2:06
bread and forgive us
2:08
our sins for we ourselves forgive
2:10
everyone who is indebted to us
2:12
and lead us not into temptation and
2:15
jesus said to them
2:16
which of you who has a friend will go to
2:18
him at midnight and say to him
2:20
friend lend me three loaves of bread
2:24
for a friend of mine has arrived on a
2:26
journey and i have
2:27
nothing to set before him and he will
2:30
answer from within
2:31
do not bother me the door is not shut
2:34
and my children are with me in bed
2:36
i cannot get up and give you anything i
2:39
tell you
2:39
though he will not get up and give him
2:41
anything because he's his friend
2:43
yet because of his impudence he will
2:45
rise and give him
2:46
whatever he needs and i'll tell you
2:50
ask and you'll be given to you seek
2:53
and you will find knock and you'll be
2:55
opened
2:56
to you so now we are going to be
3:00
looking at that entire portion of
3:02
scripture
3:03
and the question that i have is like i
3:05
said ask for what
3:07
okay and first i'm gonna read off my
3:10
screen
3:11
the disciples they had now been with
3:13
jesus for quite some time
3:15
okay we are in chapter 11. so they've
3:17
seen him perform
3:18
miracles they've seen him bear fruits in
3:21
his life
3:22
they had seen him and could testify that
3:24
his prayers
3:25
were being answered so they saw prayers
3:27
being answered
3:29
they had basically witnessed the work of
3:31
god being performed
3:32
in jesus and through jesus and they
3:36
understood that jesus prayers were not a
3:38
gimmick
3:39
jesus was not a poser like many of his
3:41
contemporaries
3:43
he was genuine and the evidence was in
3:45
the works he was doing
3:47
so on one occasion they had the
3:49
privilege privilege of watching him pray
3:52
and they finally had enough courage to
3:54
ask him to teach them
3:56
how to pray the right way so jesus
3:59
taught them the mother prayer which we
4:00
read
4:02
and uh then he went on to explain to
4:04
them how to pray
4:06
effectively so he showed them the moral
4:09
but i believe
4:10
he did not want him to use this as a
4:12
form of incantation of mantra
4:14
he didn't want them to just use this as
4:16
a well this is how you should pray and
4:18
go out there and
4:18
just say the same thing i'm saying every
4:20
time now because as people
4:22
we have the tendency to want routines
4:24
and then when we know something we want
4:26
to use this as
4:27
this is how you pray and this is what we
4:29
do like he was giving them the model
4:31
and say build your prayers based on the
4:34
matter that i gave you
4:35
so he proceeded to teach them the
4:37
practical aspect of prayer by giving
4:40
them an illustration and
4:42
and we read the illustration and i'm
4:43
going to explain that a little bit
4:45
so again what can we take out of this
4:48
model prayer is this
4:49
jesus does not want us to just pray
4:53
in vague like pray just to repeat those
4:56
words
4:56
because they become just empty words he
4:59
taught them and he teaches us today the
5:01
moral
5:01
right this is the model prayer now i'm
5:03
going to show you
5:05
how to use this model in your personal
5:08
life and this is what
5:09
jesus was going to teach next uh through
5:12
his illustration so we are going to look
5:14
at that now
5:16
so the moral prayer and the attitude and
5:20
object of prayer this is the title of
5:21
this section
5:22
and we're gonna read that in verse five
5:24
through eight i'm gonna read that
5:26
portion again
5:27
one more time because i believe it's
5:29
important for us to to read that
5:31
so verse five through eight so jesus
5:33
taught the disciples
5:35
how to pray and now he's teaching them
5:37
how to put that in practice
5:39
and he says and he said to them which of
5:41
you who has a friend
5:43
will go to him at midnight and say to
5:46
him
5:47
friend lend me three loaves for a friend
5:49
of mine has arrived on a journey
5:51
and i have nothing to set before him
5:54
and he will answer from within do not
5:56
bother me the door is not shut
5:59
and my children are with me in bed i
6:01
cannot get up and give you
6:03
anything i'll tell you though he would
6:05
not get up and give him anything because
6:07
he's his friend
6:08
yet because of his impudence he will
6:10
rise and give him
6:11
whatever he needs and then we need to
6:15
figure out what this word means here
6:16
impedance it means persistence
6:18
okay because he's he persisted he kept
6:21
on going
6:22
all right so let's go back to the slides
6:25
so we are talking about the attitude and
6:28
the object of prayer
6:29
okay so
6:32
like in those times hospitality was
6:35
highly valued in that culture
6:38
so jesus used a perfect example to
6:40
illustrate this point
6:41
like not being able to provide for the
6:43
needs of your guest was a very shameful
6:46
thing you can remember lot he took this
6:49
idea of hospitality to a perverted
6:52
level when he was willing to trade his
6:53
two daughters
6:55
to protect his guest the angel okay
6:58
against the angry mob so you remember
7:00
lot was willing to do that because
7:01
hospitality was something that was
7:04
really
7:04
highly valued in that culture okay
7:08
so jesus uses that example so you can
7:11
understand why
7:12
the man in the illustration was so
7:14
desperate it was almost as if his life
7:16
and honor
7:17
were on the line so the boldness in his
7:19
request
7:20
came from a place of helplessness he
7:23
wasn't being obnoxious
7:25
as someone who have us think like but he
7:27
came from a place of humility
7:29
he knew that his friend had
7:32
he knew that his friend had what he
7:35
needed
7:36
and the hour of the day did not matter
7:40
the hour didn't matter he was relentless
7:42
in his quest he knocked on the door to
7:44
ask
7:45
and notice that he the friend didn't
7:47
help him because
7:48
of their friendship but because of his
7:50
boldness
7:51
and i also want you to notice that the
7:53
request was not to fulfill some kind of
7:55
selfish need okay because he wanted to
7:58
serve his guest
7:58
and he was willing to do whatever it
8:00
took to serve the guest
8:02
the request was granted because of the
8:05
urgency of the matter
8:06
and jesus painted a picture of attitude
8:09
in prayer
8:11
the sense of urgency the sense of need
8:13
unselfishness
8:15
pray as if our lives and honor depended
8:18
on it
8:19
jesus was also teaching about the
8:21
generosity of the giver
8:23
in this case the friend would definitely
8:25
had compassion on the one making the
8:27
request
8:28
not because of their friendship but
8:30
because of the urgency
8:32
dependency the relentlessness in the
8:34
pursuit of the object needed
8:36
he understood the need like when the guy
8:39
came he understood
8:40
this man is willing to come out this
8:42
late at night
8:43
to serve his friend he is desperate he
8:46
desperately need that help and he's
8:47
relentless he didn't allow
8:49
shame he didn't allow the night he
8:52
didn't allow anything to stand in the
8:53
way he knew that he needed
8:55
that because his honor and the friend's
8:59
comfort was on the line so he came out
9:02
at night
9:02
to ask for help he said it doesn't
9:04
matter what that makes me look like i'm
9:05
gonna go because
9:06
i desperately need this bread because my
9:09
guest is here
9:11
and he understood that hospitality was
9:13
highly valued so he was willing to go
9:15
out
9:16
to ask relentlessly he wasn't being
9:20
obnoxious he came because he was a sense
9:22
of urgency it was a need
9:24
that needed to be fulfilled and he went
9:26
out in the middle of the night
9:28
to ask okay
9:31
so in verse nine jesus gives his
9:34
punchline
9:35
he goes and i tell you ask and he'll be
9:38
given to you
9:40
seek and you will find knock and you'll
9:43
be opened
9:44
to you so so jesus was teaching his
9:48
disciples about the heart of god
9:51
god wants to give good gifts he wants to
9:53
apportion his gifts to his children
9:56
paul said in romans 8 verse 32 he
9:59
would did not spare his own son but gave
10:01
him up for us all
10:03
how will he not also along with him
10:06
graciously give us all things
10:09
okay keep that in mind so that leads me
10:12
to me to my next point the object of
10:14
prayer
10:15
we talked about the attitude of prayer
10:16
now let's talk about the object of
10:18
prayer
10:18
what are we to pray for okay so that's
10:21
what
10:22
we're going to talk about next so the
10:24
object
10:25
so jesus goes and he says in verse 11
10:29
what father among you if his son asks
10:33
for a fish will instead of a fish give
10:35
him a serpent
10:36
or if he asks for an egg we give him a
10:39
scorpion
10:40
if you then who are evil know how to
10:43
give good gifts to your children
10:45
how much more will the heavenly father
10:48
give
10:48
the holy spirit to those who ask
10:51
him so the question is if you recall
10:55
verse 9
10:55
he says and i tell you ask and you'll be
10:59
given to you
11:00
seek and you will find knock
11:03
and the door will be open to you so
11:06
the big question is ask seek
11:10
and knock for what
11:13
what are you to ask for what am i to ask
11:16
for in prayer and jesus gives the answer
11:20
in verse 13 how much more
11:23
will the heavenly father give the holy
11:26
spirit
11:27
to those who ask him
11:30
so the asking is not for things
11:34
for yourselves really like just anything
11:36
like i want a mercedes-benz and i want
11:38
this and i want all these
11:39
gifts the asking primarily is
11:43
we have to ask god for more of the holy
11:45
spirit
11:46
because the spirit of god knows exactly
11:50
what we need so scripture also says that
11:53
his divine
11:54
power has given us everything we need
11:57
for life and godliness through our
12:00
knowledge of him
12:01
who called us by his own glory and
12:03
goodness we can read
12:05
second peter to second peter one verse
12:07
one to ten
12:08
so let's let's go there real quick okay
12:11
let's let's read that
12:13
so the scripture says
12:16
his divine power has granted to us
12:19
all things that pertain to life and
12:21
godliness through the knowledge of him
12:23
who called us to his own glory
12:25
and excellence by which he has granted
12:27
to us his precious and very great
12:29
promises
12:30
so that through them you may partake in
12:33
the divine nature
12:34
having escaped from the corruption that
12:36
is in the world because of sinful desire
12:39
for this very reason make every effort
12:42
to supplement your faith with virtue
12:45
and virtue with knowledge and knowledge
12:47
with self-control
12:48
and self-control with steadfastness and
12:50
steadfastness with godliness
12:52
and godliness with brotherly affection
12:54
and brotherly affection with love
12:56
for these qualities are yours and are
12:58
increasing they keep you from being
13:01
ineffective
13:02
or unfruitful in the knowledge of our
13:04
lord jesus christ for whoever lacks
13:07
these qualities
13:07
is so nearsighted that he's blind having
13:11
forgotten that he was cleansed
13:12
from his former sins therefore brothers
13:15
be all the more diligent
13:17
to confirm your calling and election for
13:20
if you practice these things
13:21
you will never fall that's a promise
13:24
okay
13:24
so we have the blueprint ask for the
13:27
holy spirit because
13:28
all the stuff that peter is calling out
13:31
here
13:32
are the fruits of the spirit
13:35
knowledge self-control faith
13:38
virtue brotherly love love
13:42
godliness all these attributes and
13:45
qualities are the fruits
13:47
of the spirit so we have to ask for
13:49
those things
13:50
in our lives this is what jesus is
13:53
talking about
13:54
ask for more of the spirit this is the
13:56
object of our prayer
13:58
okay because we are made we we are to be
14:01
confirmed the
14:02
likeness of jesus so that's what we have
14:05
to ask for
14:06
anything else is our own
14:10
selfish desires okay and the reason why
14:13
we are to ask for more of the holy
14:14
spirit is because we don't even know
14:16
what to pray for or ask for we cannot
14:20
pray in the flesh remember jesus says
14:22
those that worship the father in spirit
14:25
and in truth
14:26
those are the the one the father is
14:28
seeking he's going
14:29
after because god himself finds those
14:31
people because god himself
14:33
prompts their heart and he finds them
14:35
and he leads them in that kind of prayer
14:38
so we don't pray in the flesh because
14:39
the flesh is always an
14:41
enmity against god okay we've got i mean
14:45
so let's read let's see what romans 6
14:47
romans 8 verse 26 and 27 is saying
14:51
so the scripture says in the same way
14:54
this spirit helps us in our weakness we
14:57
do not know how to pray or what
14:59
we do not know what we ought to pray for
15:01
but the spirit himself
15:03
and the seeds for us through wordless
15:06
groans
15:07
and he who searches our hearts knows the
15:09
mind of the spirit
15:10
because the spirit and the seeds for the
15:12
god's people in accordance with the will
15:14
of god
15:15
the spirit of god knows the will of god
15:17
because he prays in accordance with the
15:19
will of god because the spirit of god is
15:21
god himself
15:22
okay so this is why jesus says
15:26
ask for more of the holy spirit because
15:29
the spirit
15:30
prays and intercedes for god's people in
15:32
line
15:33
with the will of god this is why our
15:36
prayers are to be always to ask
15:38
for more of the holy spirit more of the
15:40
fruit of the spirit
15:42
because he's the greatest gift we've
15:43
been given god himself
15:45
in us and we ought to ask that we may
15:48
decrease
15:49
so that he may increase and that's the
15:51
object of our prayer
15:53
every day and james gives us a warning
15:56
we are told in in james 4 verse 2-5 you
15:59
do not have
16:01
because you do not ask and when you ask
16:05
and you do not receive because you ask
16:07
wrongly to spend it on your passions
16:11
you are adulterous people do you not
16:13
know that friendship with the world is
16:15
enmity with god
16:17
therefore whoever wishes to be a friend
16:20
of the world
16:21
makes himself an enemy of god or do you
16:23
suppose it is to no purpose that the
16:25
scripture says
16:26
he yearns jealously over the spirit that
16:29
he has made
16:30
to dwell in us you see the warning
16:33
okay god is a jealous god and he will
16:35
not have any rival
16:37
his spirit in us opposes the deeds of
16:40
the flesh to keep us from doing the
16:41
things that we want to do
16:43
we are told that in galatians to please
16:45
ourselves
16:46
you see that i will repeat that again
16:48
god is a jealous god
16:50
and he will not have any rival his
16:52
spirit in us opposes the deeds of the
16:54
flesh
16:54
to keep us from doing the things that we
16:57
want to do to please ourselves
16:59
so we therefore ought to pray that by
17:01
the help of god's spirit
17:03
we ask for things that will bring honor
17:06
to god
17:08
and our good and the good of those
17:10
around
17:11
us so the big question again is this
17:15
what are we to pray for and ask for in
17:18
closing
17:19
we have to ask for more of
17:22
the holy spirit so that when our minds
17:25
are in line with the holy spirit we can
17:27
pray effectively
17:29
remember peter says somewhere be sober
17:31
minded for the sake of your prayers
17:33
paul also said present your bodies as a
17:36
living sacrifice holy unto the lord
17:38
so you must decrease and he must
17:39
increase so for us to have
17:42
effective prayers we are to be led by
17:45
the spirit
17:46
because those who worship god who
17:48
worship him
17:49
in spirit and in truth so my exhortation
17:52
to you this morning is
17:53
pray and ask for more of the holy spirit
17:56
because that's the only thing that we
17:58
need
17:58
really is when we are being led by the
18:01
spirit
18:03
we ask and our asking will always be
18:06
with a yes because the spirit praise the
18:09
will of god
18:10
know the word of god pray the will of
18:12
god ask
18:14
for more of the holy spirit all right
18:16
and i'll leave you with that today so i
18:18
encourage you to to go back and read
18:20
that passage
18:20
and ask god to fill you with his
18:23
knowledge and the knowledge of his will
18:24
through his spirit have a wonderful day
18:27
and i'll see you next time
