Paul opened chapter 12 of the book of Romans with the following verse,
I appeal to you therefore, brothers,[a] by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.(v1)
He is basically saying to his listeners, in view of the kindness of God toward you, expressed by his mercies, calling you out darkness into light, redeeming your life from the pit, saving you from His wrath, cleansing you from all unrighteousness, bestowing upon you His perfect righteousness through Christ, giving you His Spirit. In view of all these mercies, your reasonable response is to consider yourself dead to sin, and alive in Christ to bear fruits of righteousness, by being set apart for God, to be used by God. You can almost hear his listeners saying, how do we do that Paul? And He gives the practical answer to this process in v2, see video below ( I'll invite you to watch the presentation in its entirety).

hello good morning this is taiva
0:01
types.com i hope you've had a great
0:04
weekend
0:05
and welcome back to uh this channel and
0:07
today we are going to look at romans 12
0:09
verse 2. and the title of the studies be
0:13
transformed by the renewing of your mind
0:15
and this is we're going to be talking
0:17
about the process
0:18
so i'm going to jump in and start a
0:21
presentation
0:23
so this is a call to be a living
0:25
sacrifice
0:26
okay paul opens on chapter 12 of the
0:29
book of roman
0:30
in verse 1 he says i appeal to you
0:32
therefore brothers
0:33
by the mercies of god to present your
0:36
bodies
0:37
as a living sacrifice holy and
0:39
acceptable to god
0:41
which is your spiritual worship that's
0:43
verse 1
0:44
so basically paul is saying to his
0:46
listeners in view of the kindness of god
0:49
towards you expressed in his mercies
0:53
which is calling you out of darkness
0:55
into light redeeming your life from the
0:57
pit
0:58
saving you from his wrath cleansing you
1:00
from all unrighteousness
1:01
be stoned upon you his perfect
1:03
righteousness through christ
1:05
giving you his spirit and much more in
1:08
view of all these mercies
1:10
your reasonable response is to consider
1:12
yourself
1:13
dead to sin and alive in christ
1:16
to bear fruit for righteousness by being
1:19
set apart for god
1:20
to be used by god so you can almost hear
1:24
his listener saying paul
1:27
we hear you and we hear everything that
1:29
you're saying and we like that and we
1:30
want to do that but
1:31
how do we do that practically prac
1:34
practically like
1:35
how do we what's the practical answer to
1:37
this process how do we leave that out
1:39
how do we live this call to be a living
1:41
sacrifice how do we do it
1:43
and that's what we're going to be
1:44
looking at today but before we do that
1:46
i want to tell you exactly what paul was
1:49
talking about when he
1:50
mentioned to present our bodies as a
1:52
living sacrifice because his audience
1:54
knew exactly what he was referring to so
1:57
we're going to look at that
2:00
and we're going to look at the
2:01
connection with the burned
2:03
offering now paul was most likely using
2:06
a language
2:06
his listeners were familiar with and he
2:09
was probably making a connection with
2:10
the parent offering
2:12
that was mentioned in leviticus one it
2:14
was a voluntary offering that
2:16
represented the offerer or worshipers
2:19
intention of being
2:20
totally devoted to the lord so the offer
2:23
was basically the same by bringing his
2:25
burnt offering
2:26
all that i am belongs to
2:29
the lord so when you brought your burnt
2:32
offering
2:33
that's what you meant once you laid your
2:35
hand and pressed your hand on the head
2:36
of the
2:37
whatever you were bringing you were
2:38
basically saying all that i
2:41
am is the lord and the burnt offering
2:44
was totally burned
2:45
everything was burned so basically you
2:46
was you were saying
2:48
i am totally devoted to the lord
2:50
everything that i am
2:51
every aspect of my being is being
2:55
devoted to the service of god
2:58
and that's what you meant by bringing
3:00
that burnt offering
3:01
and and there's a guy on youtube his
3:04
name is the tabunaku man he does a great
3:06
breakdown of
3:07
all these offerings like the piece
3:09
offering the burnt offering
3:11
the sino-thing and the meal offering and
3:13
every one of those offerings
3:14
so i'll encourage you to go and watch
3:16
his youtube channel he does a
3:18
really good break breakdown gives you
3:20
the background so you can understand why
3:22
this is so
3:23
significant to us as christians today
3:25
okay
3:26
so now that we understand the connection
3:27
with the brand offering we are going to
3:29
go
3:30
and talk about the process to be
3:32
transformed
3:33
okay now verse two and that's what we
3:35
are looking at today
3:36
verse two says do not be conformed to
3:39
this world
3:41
but be transformed by the renewing of
3:43
your mind
3:44
that by testing you may discern what the
3:47
will of god
3:48
what is good and acceptable and perfect
3:51
what is the will of god
3:53
what is good and acceptable and perfect
3:55
before god
3:56
so do not be conformed to this world
3:59
will be transformed by the renewing of
4:01
your mind
4:02
and you need to understand why this
4:04
process is vital
4:06
and necessary to our spiritual growth
4:08
like it's imperative that we understand
4:10
that until our regeneration up until you
4:13
become
4:14
a lover of god every inclination of your
4:17
heart
4:17
is toward evil like every inclination of
4:20
my heart before i became a christian a
4:22
believer
4:24
is toward evil and the holy spirit is
4:26
the one that changes the way i
4:28
think and he changes the disposition of
4:31
my heart so i can have
4:32
love for god up until that time
4:35
every inclination of your heart and my
4:37
heart is toward evil
4:39
pleasing ourselves basically doing what
4:41
i want to do doing what pleases
4:43
me okay and now that you've been called
4:46
by god
4:47
he begins the process of changing your
4:50
way of thinking or my way of thinking
4:52
so we come into this world like i say
4:54
sdoa
4:55
and sdoa is basically spiritually dead
4:59
on arrival so when you come out of your
5:01
mother's womb and you you let
5:02
let out that little cry you are
5:05
basically
5:06
i mean this is my own interpretation
5:07
you're basically saying i hate god
5:10
basically you come into this world you
5:12
love yourself
5:13
everything is about you you and you so
5:16
from the day
5:17
you enter this world until the time you
5:19
are called into the family of god
5:21
your life follow after the ways of and
5:24
thoughts
5:25
and processes of this world basically
5:28
when i say this world i'm not talking
5:30
about like the physical
5:31
like the the philosophies of this world
5:35
like the way of thinking of people of
5:37
this world that we live in
5:39
which are by nature hostile to the
5:41
things of god
5:42
and and paul is going to mention a
5:44
couple of things in the book of
5:45
corinthians but
5:46
after that point up to the point of your
5:49
regeneration
5:50
everything about you is about
5:53
selfishness
5:54
pleasing yourself and pleasing your own
5:57
little agenda so you come into this
6:00
world
6:00
with the way of the world because you
6:02
have that adamic nature
6:04
we are born with natural sin we are born
6:07
with the sin of adam when he
6:08
when he when he ate the apple being led
6:11
by his wife
6:13
eve sin entered the world and then
6:16
therefore we inherited
6:17
that sinful nature from adam so we come
6:20
into this world wanting to be god
6:22
wanting to be our own god and this is uh
6:25
how we are conformed to the pattern of
6:27
this world which is
6:28
me me and my own little thing
6:31
so now we are going to look at and what
6:33
paul mentions in
6:34
in the book of corinthians okay so paul
6:38
says
6:38
in second corinthians 10 verse 3 and 2
6:42
or verse 5
6:43
for though we walk in the flesh we are
6:45
not waging war according to the flesh
6:47
for the weapons of our warfare are not
6:49
of the flesh but have divine power to
6:51
destroy strongholds
6:52
and he explains what the strongholds are
6:55
he says we destroy
6:56
arguments and every lofty opinion raised
6:59
against the knowledge of god
7:01
and take every thought captive to obey
7:03
christ
7:04
being ready to punish every disobedience
7:06
when your obedience is complete
7:08
so basically what i was saying before we
7:11
come into this world
7:12
and accumulate lies after lies
7:15
since we are being shaped by the
7:16
philosophies and arguments
7:18
of this world and when we enter into the
7:21
family of god
7:22
god begins the process of reshaping our
7:24
minds
7:25
by injecting his truths in us through
7:28
the sanctifying work of the holy spirit
7:30
in us so it's a pelican right progress
7:33
a daily grind and paul explains how this
7:35
process works in the life of a genuine
7:37
believer
7:38
in verse 2 of romans 12 and that's what
7:41
he was saying
7:42
be transformed by the renewing of your
7:44
mind by no longer conform to the pattern
7:47
of this word but by
7:48
being transformed by your mind being
7:50
renewed every day
7:52
okay so we are going to look at
7:55
the process of transformation okay so
7:59
it's it's a long process lifetime
8:01
process because until jesus comes back
8:03
we are going to struggle again again
8:05
with the flesh because god is
8:07
doing away with our sinful nature and
8:09
replacing the old with the new so
8:12
and one of the process and one of the
8:13
ways god renews our mind it's not the
8:16
only way but one of the ways that he
8:17
does it
8:19
is uh through um what james talks about
8:22
in james 1
8:23
verse 1 to 4 james says canada join my
8:26
brothers
8:27
when you meet trials of various kinds
8:30
for you know
8:31
that the testing of your faith produces
8:34
steadfastness and let steadfastness have
8:37
its full effect
8:38
that you may be perfect and complete
8:40
lacking
8:41
in nothing so one of the ways god
8:44
changes us and changes our way of
8:46
thinking is through
8:48
trials i know nobody likes going through
8:50
a tough time but
8:52
this is one of the way god disciplines
8:54
his children
8:55
so god changes our minds or renews our
8:58
minds
8:58
through trials the trials are meant to
9:01
test
9:01
our faith okay and the testing of our
9:04
faith
9:04
produces steadfastness or perseverance
9:08
and earnestness and then earnestness
9:11
changes our character
9:12
because through the trials god
9:15
weed us out of the old nature's ways and
9:17
patterns
9:18
so he prunes us so that we can bear
9:21
fruits
9:22
that have eternal value so the pruning
9:25
is meant to transform us so that our
9:27
asking in prayer
9:29
is according to the will and purposes of
9:31
god
9:32
it isn't a very pleasant process because
9:35
the flesh which is the old nature
9:37
is opposed to the things of the spirit
9:39
of god
9:40
and it doesn't have the power to submit
9:43
to it
9:43
so this is why the lord has to put the
9:45
old nature to death
9:47
in order that we might be living
9:49
according to the new nature
9:51
for the new nature is being transformed
9:53
to be conformed to the
9:54
image of christ i'll repeat that again
9:58
this is why the lord has to put the old
10:00
nature to death
10:02
in order that we may be living according
10:04
to the new nature
10:05
for the new nature is being transformed
10:08
to be conformed
10:09
to the image of christ so the end
10:12
purpose
10:13
is that we might be christ like
10:16
and pray according to the will of god if
10:19
our minds
10:20
aren't transformed our prayers are
10:22
corrupted
10:24
and don't reflect the will and purpose
10:25
of god this is why we are to pray
10:28
in the spirit for the flesh never
10:31
wants to please god but the flesh wants
10:34
to please the flesh
10:36
and what is the end purpose of being
10:39
renewed
10:39
in our minds what why is god changing us
10:43
why is he doing it is what we need to
10:45
ask ourselves
10:46
so the end purpose
10:50
now i've already mentioned it like the
10:52
end purpose
10:53
of being renewing our mind is so that we
10:55
may be conformed to the image of christ
10:58
why why why do we want to be conformed
11:01
to the image of christ
11:02
in order that we may know the will of
11:05
god
11:06
that the purposes of god may be
11:08
accomplished for the glory of god
11:10
and peter said in 1st peter 4 7
11:14
the end of all things is at hand
11:16
therefore
11:18
be self-controlled he didn't say be
11:20
self-control
11:21
be self-controlled and sober minded
11:24
for the sake of your prayers this is
11:27
important to understand
11:28
be self-controlled and sober-minded for
11:31
the sake of your prayers
11:33
soberness of mind is a key ingredient
11:36
in victoria's prayers a sober mind is a
11:39
mind that is free
11:41
of the control of the old nature
11:45
okay a sober mind is a mind that is free
11:48
of the control of the old
11:50
nature it is the mind that has been
11:52
renewed to be conformed
11:54
to the mind of christ so
11:57
that he can receive joyfully and gladly
12:01
the things of god this is why jesus said
12:05
god seeks those who will worship him in
12:09
spirit and in truth
12:11
the spirit of god loves the things of
12:14
god
12:15
and only enters it for the saints
12:17
according to the will of god
12:19
which is truth so paul said
12:22
to those misusing the gift of tongues
12:25
he told them pray in the mind
12:29
pray in the spirit but also pray in the
12:31
mind and the reason why we're saying
12:33
this is because this
12:34
when we pray in the spirit sometimes now
12:36
pray in the spirit doesn't mean that you
12:37
have to
12:38
speak in tongues now some people pray in
12:40
tongues
12:41
but he was telling those people praying
12:43
in tongues you have to be able to pray
12:44
in the mind so that way your mind knows
12:46
what your spirit is saying so you can
12:47
interpret it so that other people can be
12:49
edified
12:50
now praying the spirit doesn't
12:51
necessarily mean you have to pray in
12:53
tongues you can pray
12:54
use your native language english you can
12:56
use french or whatever language you
12:58
speak
12:58
and the spirit directs your prayers so
13:01
you begin to pray
13:03
in accordance with the spirit because
13:04
now your mind is transformed so now you
13:06
are
13:07
thinking the thoughts of god and you are
13:09
praying like jesus will pray
13:11
so that's the end purpose because we
13:13
have to be transforming our mind
13:15
to be able to know what the will of god
13:17
is because god wants us to know what he
13:19
wants to do with our lives
13:21
but if you are not transforming your
13:22
mind then your prayers do not reflect
13:24
the character of god
13:25
so you have to be changed in order to
13:27
pray
13:28
god's will okay so soberness of mind is
13:31
very important
13:32
this is what paul and peter said it be
13:35
sober-minded and self-controlled for the
13:37
sake of your prayers
13:39
because he prepares us for prayers that
13:41
glorify god
13:42
and peter knew that when our minds are
13:44
clustered with the desires of the flesh
13:46
our prayers become man-centered instead
13:50
of being god-centered
13:52
so be transformed by the renewing of
13:54
your mind
13:55
in order that you may know the will of
13:57
the lord so
13:59
this is what i will say to you i wanted
14:00
to i want this to be
14:02
pretty short i i i'm gonna say
14:06
the only way we can achieve this is by
14:09
totally giving ourselves to god that's
14:11
why paul said in the beginning
14:13
in verse one how do you set yourself up
14:15
for that because by
14:17
giving yourself totally to god say all
14:19
that i am belongs to you lord
14:21
you do as you please and this is the
14:23
rest of god
14:24
because that's when god takes over and
14:27
he begins to change you
14:28
now it's not going to be an easy process
14:30
because the old nature wants to cling on
14:34
it's a hard process painful process
14:37
sometimes because the pruning is never
14:39
fun
14:40
but i guarantee you once you go through
14:42
it
14:43
there's light at the end of the tunnel
14:45
you know i know it's cliche but
14:46
there is really because your prayers
14:48
begin to really reflect
14:50
the mind of christ and you begin to pray
14:52
and you see fruit
14:53
in your life that bear fruit for
14:56
eternity
14:58
i would strongly encourage you to ask
15:00
today say to the lord
15:02
change me whatever it takes
15:05
however painful processes sometimes is
15:08
necessary
15:09
but because guess what no discipline is
15:12
pleasant
15:12
at a time but later it leads to a
15:15
harvest of righteousness
15:17
for those that have been trained by it
15:20
so i encourage you to seek god
15:22
while he may be found so that you can
15:24
enter that rest
15:25
alright have a wonderful day and i'll
15:27
see you next time
