in this video you're gonna learn about
0:01
the nasty stomach bug that is norovirus
0:04
what it is how to avoid getting it and
0:06
what to do if you get it
0:08
hi I'm Gary beverage of tips of
0:10
travelers also the author of some cruise
0:12
books like the cruise travelers handbook
0:14
and essential cruise tips in this video
0:16
I want to be talking about that horrible
0:18
thing that is norovirus particularly in
0:20
relation to cruising I've been on about
0:22
50 cruises at the time making this video
0:25
I've been on ships when it's had an
0:26
outbreak of norovirus and I haven't
0:28
caught it so I'm going to share tips and
0:30
advice on how you too can make sure that
0:33
you avoid norovirus the important thing
0:35
to know about norovirus is it's not
0:37
specifically related to cruising the
0:39
Center for Disease Control and
0:41
Prevention in the United States
0:42
estimates that probably less than 1% of
0:45
all outbreaks of norovirus actually
0:47
happen on a cruise ship up to 20 million
0:50
people a year in the United States can
0:51
suffer from norovirus but 1 million in
0:54
the UK so it's a big problem so first of
0:56
all what is norovirus norovirus is a
0:59
gastrointestinal illness and cause
1:02
vomiting and diarrhea you can also have
1:04
headaches fever and stomach cramps as I
1:06
mentioned it's not unique to ships it
1:08
breaks out a lot on land but what's very
1:11
important about norovirus because it is
1:12
so contagious you tends to break out
1:14
when there are concentrated groups of
1:16
people so things like hospitals care
1:18
homes and of course cruise ships where
1:19
you have a lot of people in a contained
1:21
space norovirus is very contagious and
1:24
basically it spreads through touch so it
1:27
you can pick it up by doing things like
1:29
shaking hands touching doorknobs
1:31
basically touching anything that has the
1:34
virus on it so it's really really
1:36
contagious and it spreads very easily so
1:39
it requires a lot of discipline to make
1:42
sure that you do not get it so how can
1:44
you avoid getting norovirus well
1:46
actually it's surprisingly simple the
1:49
single most important way of stopping
1:51
getting norovirus is by washing your
1:54
hands with soap and water very
1:56
frequently if you keep doing that this
1:59
is going to really minimize your chance
2:02
of getting norovirus when you wash your
2:04
hands with soap and water you should
2:06
wash them for at least 20 seconds very
2:08
thoroughly and one of the little tips
2:10
that I was given by a captain on board
2:13
ship is sink while e to yourself happy
2:16
birthday that's going to be about as
2:18
long as it takes to make sure that your
2:20
hands are washed properly wash your
2:22
hands very frequently and avoid touching
2:24
surfaces that people touch a lot so try
2:28
and avoid things on a cruise ship like
2:30
the handrails pushing buttons on the
2:32
elevator if you use one of the public
2:35
restrooms when you leave either you use
2:36
a tissue or you put on your sleeve or
2:39
something and open the door to leave the
2:41
bathroom try and avoid physical contact
2:43
with other people so you'll find on a
2:46
the captain's and the officers when they
2:48
have the captain's parties will not
2:52
they might other just nod or they'll
2:53
bump elbows now alcohol gel is obviously
2:57
helpful and it it's important on a
2:59
cruise ship you'll find that everywhere
3:00
but it's no substitute to washing the
3:02
hands with soap and water another
3:04
important tip and this happens a lot
3:06
particularly when there's an outbreak of
3:08
norovirus is if you need to use the
3:10
bathroom try and go to your own cabin so
3:12
don't use the public restrooms around
3:14
the ship because that could be an area
3:16
where people aren't being as diligent in
3:18
terms of washing their hands and the
3:20
virus could be spread to other very
3:22
important things about norovirus is if
3:24
you board the ship and you've either had
3:26
diarrhea or you've had vomiting when you
3:29
fill out that questionnaire that
3:30
everybody has to fill out before you
3:32
board the ship be honest because one of
3:35
the biggest problems with norovirus is
3:37
people bring it onto the ship so the
3:39
ships spend a lot of time cleansing
3:41
surfaces trying to keep everything clean
3:42
but if someone boards a ship who's
3:45
suffering from diarrhea or vomiting or
3:47
has the virus they can spread it very
3:49
easily and once it's a mother ship it's
3:51
quite hard to contain so if you do have
3:54
any of those symptoms when you fill out
3:55
the questionnaire be honest about it if
3:57
everyone was honest about it it would
3:59
probably stop the spread on board cruise
4:00
ships the downside of filling it out is
4:02
you're probably going to be quarantined
4:03
in your cabin for at least 48 hours
4:06
until they can make sure that it's clear
4:08
so you might find the first day of your
4:10
cruise is you're not allowed to actually
4:12
get out and about on the ship however if
4:15
you are bringing the virus on board
4:16
that's the best way of stopping it is
4:18
being honest when you fill out the
4:19
questionnaire the other thing that I
4:21
tend to do when I board a ship to avoid
4:24
getting that the norovirus is in the
4:26
the first 48 hours first two or three
4:28
days I don't use the buffer restaurant
4:30
because that's often where people are
4:32
our attention also the different
4:34
implements and it's basically you know a
4:35
place where lots of people are going so
4:37
I tend to avoid the buffer restaurant
4:39
for the first couple of days of a cruise
4:41
until the cruise is underway and it's
4:43
very clear that there's no cases of
4:45
norovirus on the ship so that's another
4:47
good way of avoiding it the thing with
4:49
the norovirus is it can take up to 48
4:51
hours before it actually manifests
4:53
itself and unfortunately there's no cure
4:55
for it you basically have to ride it out
4:57
so the key thing is making yourself
5:00
the minute you start having symptoms
5:02
report it what ships ask you to do is
5:05
not go to the medical center go straight
5:07
to your cabin pick up the phone and
5:09
phone than medical center now ships
5:11
generally do not charge you if you
5:14
report any sort of gastro problems so if
5:17
you have vomiting or diarrhea you may
5:18
also have headaches stomach cramps or
5:20
fevers porter's the medical center
5:22
they're unlikely to charge you for any
5:25
services that they may provide what will
5:27
likely happen is a nurse or doctor will
5:29
come and see you they'll document your
5:30
various symptoms and they will probably
5:32
give you some anti diarrheal products so
5:35
for example some of the brands or
5:36
products you might have heard of are
5:38
things like imodium or darlie's and also
5:41
what you will be encouraged to do is to
5:43
make sure that you stay rehydrated so
5:45
you're asked to drink lots of liquid or
5:47
you'll be given some of the kind of
5:48
product which helps reabsorb lots of
5:51
vitamins and minerals any products they
5:54
give you and any consultations you're
5:56
unlikely to be charged for because
5:58
norovirus is such a big issue and ships
6:01
do not want to you know discourage
6:03
people from reporting it the other way
6:05
that is treated is because the symptoms
6:07
can again also last for up to 48 hours
6:10
you will be quarantined in your cabin
6:12
and you will be asked not to leave your
6:15
cabin they will also come and probably
6:17
wash your bedding quite frequently
6:19
they'll make sure that you brought meals
6:21
to your rooms particular targeting to
6:23
make sure that you are rehydrating and
6:25
getting you know minerals and things
6:27
back so you will be asked to stay in
6:30
your cabin and very important if you do
6:31
have the symptoms to stay in your cabin
6:33
and now you're gonna lose some days on
6:34
your vacation but it's better than it's
6:36
spreading right throughout the ship
6:38
so there's no specific treatment to it's
6:40
really just letting it work through your
6:42
system and using products to make your
6:44
life a little bit more comfortable don't
6:46
let the fear of norovirus put you off
6:49
although norovirus breakouts on a ship
6:51
get a lot of publicity bear in mind that
6:54
norovirus is very prevalent all over the
6:57
place they do tend to happen when people
6:59
congregate so things like hospitals care
7:01
homes and of course on a ship so final
7:04
thought about the norovirus it's really
7:06
about taking care washing your hands
7:08
incredibly frequently avoiding touching
7:10
surfaces avoiding contact with people
7:13
shaking hands etc if you do have any
7:15
symptoms it's really important go to
7:17
your cabin let the medical center know
7:19
and unfortunately if you do get
7:21
norovirus you just have to ride it out
7:23
and take those various products that are
7:25
going to make your life more comfortable
7:26
hope you found that helpful if you have
7:29
any other thoughts or tips on your
7:30
experiences of norovirus please leave

them in the comments it would also be
