Russia’s 42% More Powerful Train Engine Stuns Rail Industry

May 6, 2026
Russia is preparing for one of the biggest railway modernization programs in decades as the country begins transitioning from traditional commutator-drive electric locomotives to advanced asynchronous traction systems. The massive project will focus heavily on Russian Railways’ Eastern Polygon, including the Baikal-Amur Mainline and the Trans-Siberian Railway—critical freight corridors carrying coal, metals, containers, and strategic exports across Eurasia. The new generation of Russian electric locomotives promises major improvements in power, efficiency, and reliability. According to industry reports, asynchronous traction systems can improve energy efficiency by up to 20 percent while significantly reducing maintenance requirements. Even more importantly, the new locomotives will be capable of hauling extremely heavy freight trains weighing up to 7100 tons, increasing railway throughput without requiring massive infrastructure expansion. At the center of this transformation are Russia’s latest locomotives, including the 3ES8 “Malakhit” and the powerful new 2ES11 “Orlets.” The “Orlets” locomotive is reportedly 42 percent more powerful than previous generations and could become one of the most capable freight locomotives in Russia’s history. The transition also represents a major push toward import substitution and domestic industrial development. Russian manufacturers are rapidly increasing production of asynchronous traction motors, power electronics, and digital locomotive systems as the country seeks technological independence from Western suppliers. In this video, we explore why Russia is abandoning older locomotive technology, how asynchronous traction works, why the BAM and Trans-Siberian railways are becoming the focus of modernization, and what this could mean for the future of freight transportation across Eurasia. #Russia #RussianRailways #Railways #Locomotive #ElectricLocomotive #FreightTrain #BAM #TransSiberian #RailTransport #AsynchronousDrive #RussianTechnology #Trains #Railroad #Transport #Infrastructure #Orlets #Malakhit #TMH #RailIndustry #Eurasia Be a Member for exclusive privileges - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCviEFTf1xIPKsjmyF_zvFug/join Twitter : https://x.com/AltitudeAddicts Website: https://www.altitudeaddicts.com
