Rectangular blocks stacked inside a shipwreck are not something you see every day.
On the wreck of the SS Skaala, these patent fuel blocks are still sitting exactly where they were loaded more than a century ago. Made from compressed coal, they were designed to burn hotter and cleaner than loose coal and were once a vital part of steamship technology.
