hey everyone welcome to the copy chat
0:04
show this is a solo show and I'm your
0:07
host mine
0:08
Todd Jones and the copy chat show we
0:12
talk about content marketing copywriting
0:14
and digital marketing and today I want
0:18
to kind of piggyback off of something
0:20
that my friend John Locke talked about
0:23
on his video podcast and I will have the
0:27
link to that podcast in the show notes
0:29
below but he asked the question are
0:32
talked about why you shouldn't copy
0:34
someone else's content web site contents
0:38
what's your what he's referring to now I
0:41
have some colleagues who have had their
0:44
entire site ripped off it's it it's some
0:48
fury ating if that's happened to you the
0:50
work you go to put into it and they rip
0:52
everything off and maybe change the name
0:54
or something like that that that is just
0:56
totally wrong on so many levels
0:58
and but what I'm going to talk about is
1:01
the text part of its content which we
1:03
tend to refer to as copy so this is why
1:06
you shouldn't copy someone else's
1:07
website copy if you will
1:10
now John talks about content and I'm I
1:13
presume he's mostly talking about copy
1:15
but certainly there are other parts of
1:19
content that could be stolen or if
1:20
that's kind of what people tend to refer
1:23
to it as stolen content he makes very
1:27
good case for why you should not copy
1:30
someone's content he talks about it from
1:33
an SEO perspective he talks about it
1:34
from a reputation standpoint and in
1:37
general just as a business owner why you
1:39
shouldn't steal or copy someone else's
1:42
content but I'm going to talk about it
1:45
as the content and the copy part of it
1:48
and I'm gonna talk about three reasons
1:51
why you should not copy someone else's
1:53
website copy for your own business the
1:56
first one I think's a pretty solid
1:58
reason for anybody who's ever taken
2:00
college classes or been to college it's
2:02
really referred to as plagiarism we have
2:06
seen examples in the public eye of
2:08
speeches that have been copied and
2:11
that's basically what you're looking at
2:13
it's a plagiaristic in in in the
2:17
academic world when you are caught with
2:20
plagiarism they kick you out they expel
2:24
you so it's really considered its
2:28
integrity and it is being lazy so I
2:32
think you know it's really really what's
2:36
the word it's very tempting to just say
2:38
hey well their business is just like
2:40
mine I'll go ahead and copy what they're
2:43
doing or maybe you hire a copywriter and
2:46
that's what they do but don't let them
2:50
do that don't hire somebody who's gonna
2:52
copy someone else's website copy and I'm
2:55
gonna tell you in a minute how you can
2:57
keep that from happening so stay with me
2:59
to the end for that but the second
3:02
reason that you shouldn't copy someone
3:04
else's website copy is you don't know if
3:07
that copy is actually successful so
3:11
you're copying someone's website copy
3:16
you think they're a successful business
3:18
owner you think their websites copies
3:20
doing great and you still add you copy
3:22
it and you're like you know but you
3:24
don't know if that copy is working for
3:27
them are they getting leads that copy
3:29
are they persuade senior users
3:32
so this is something that people don't
3:35
think about so you copy somebody but are
3:37
you copying somebody who's at the top of
3:39
the industry or somebody who appears to
3:41
be at the top of the industry really
3:43
they aren't or not only that but they're
3:45
just the the copy just isn't working
3:47
very well it's not being very persuasive
3:51
it's not generating the leaves that for
3:53
all and we talked about this and I think
3:55
the very first episode of the kappa chat
3:58
show your website copy is not just for
4:02
information we are in an age now where
4:05
when you do website copy it should be
4:07
more than about information you should
4:09
be concerned with persuading and
4:12
convincing people to sign up to
4:14
subscribe to your email newsletter to
4:17
contact you for you know quote those
4:22
kind of things and instead of just
4:24
information so
4:26
true test of success the website copy is
4:29
are you getting success with the
4:32
contacts and leads and that kind of
4:35
thing the third reason you shouldn't
4:37
copy someone else's website copy is
4:39
context by that I mean every business
4:42
has its own context so they may have a
4:47
business like yours but they're in a
4:48
different market and the market has a
4:52
totally different mindset about what
4:54
what's important to them and so forth
4:56
and it may not translate to your market
4:58
or to your audience so you're really
5:02
taking a your you're swinging for the
5:04
fences on something that you very well
5:06
know will completely whiff on so I mean
5:10
I go back to the fact that you're not
5:12
really copying someone else's copy
5:14
you're actually stealing it for that
5:16
matter but so as if you're a web or
5:19
business owner and you have a website
5:21
and you want to make sure you hire
5:23
someone who is not going to copy someone
5:27
else's content copy website copy how can
5:30
you ensure they don't do this research
5:33
are they asking you hard questions about
5:36
your company about your company's target
5:39
market are they speaking and doing
5:42
interviews with your with your with your
5:44
customers are they diving into that kind
5:48
of research if they go straight to
5:50
writing you have a very there's a very
5:52
good chance that they may actually do
5:54
what you're afraid they're gonna do so
5:56
if they're not spending time researching
6:00
the the language of your customers
6:03
talking about your product or or even
6:06
about your product or service those
6:09
those things they should be spending a
6:12
significant amount of time deciding on
6:15
that information before they ever start
6:18
writing anything so that will ensure
6:20
that they they don't steal something
6:21
because they're actually speaking to
6:23
your audience and your customers using
6:26
their language rather than somebody
6:28
else's that that was written for another
6:31
site so that is one way you can assure
6:33
that they're not gonna copy someone
6:35
else's content so I believe that you
6:38
should not
6:40
I just think it's a no-brainer that you
6:43
don't copy someone else's content and I
6:46
would go so far as call it stealing
6:48
because I think that's what you're doing
6:49
but it is lazy its plagiarism you don't
6:54
know if it's successful you have no
6:57
frame of reference unless they showed
6:59
you numbers and it doesn't take into
7:02
account your own context your own
7:04
business because so you were actually
7:07
swinging for the fences for something
7:09
that may just be a strikeout so do take
7:14
the time to do your own copy for your
7:17
website take the time to help your
7:20
website copywriter do the research that
7:23
he or she needs to do to do the
7:26
appropriate website copy work so and
7:29
don't rely on someone else for that you
7:32
may be relying on the wrong person so
7:34
anyway that's the that's my thought
7:36
about why you shouldn't steal or copy
7:40
other people's website copy I want you
7:43
to encourage you to go listen to John's
7:45
video and because he says things I don't
7:48
say and I wanted to do this video to say
7:51
things that he didn't say and so between
7:54
the two videos you should be able to get
7:56
a sense of some really solid reasons why
7:59
you shouldn't go down that route you
8:02
should be doing your own content so
8:05
thanks for joining me today on the copy
