Whether you're a homeowner with a vacation house in the Bahamas or an apartment dweller who wants to avoid water damage in your storage space, you're going to love the SimpleSence WiFi Leak Detector. Without the need of a hub and without any sort of subscription, this handy little unit can warn you of water leaks - or frozen pipes! - right through your smartphone.
Tech expert and homeowner Dave Taylor of https://www.AskDaveTaylor.com/ tried out the SimpleSence WiFi Leak Detector and determined it's ideal for his basement and under the sink both. This is quite simply a must-have for any homeowner too...

You always know when there's a leak with this little gizmo. Let's have a look
0:11
Dave Taylor here and as a homeowner I live in fear of water basically. Not showers but the
0:17
water that could leak out of a sink. The water that might be in the basement. The water that
0:22
could be in the attic because there's a leaky roof spot and you don't know about it. So what
0:27
you want is you want water sensors. But water sensors are big and complicated and require all
0:32
sorts of doohickeys and such right? Wrong. That's where this comes in. This is so cool. This is the
0:39
SimpleSense Wi-Fi leak detector and this is literally the whole unit. It is completely
0:45
self-contained. There's simply two metal strips and if they connect then it will trigger that
0:51
as a water event. So you can put this behind that leaky toilet. You can put it in the basement. You
0:59
can put it in your crawl space. You can put it in the attic. You can get a bunch of them and you can
1:03
have them all working together. And here's the thing is that it is a two-year battery life
1:08
So you do not have to go and like every three months grab it and charge it because that never
1:13
would work. But this is such a great simple idea. There's no hub required so you don't need to have
1:19
it be part of your smart home if you don't already have one. And there is no subscription. Easy setup. It
1:25
really is like ridiculously simple. It makes you wonder why all the other devices in this space are
1:30
so complicated. You literally plug this in, pair it with the app on your phone. It has an app on the phone
1:37
and then you set it up through that for your Wi-Fi network and you're done. Now I talk about things
1:43
but I like to demonstrate things too. So water sensor, dry bowl, water. Right? So what we will
1:51
hope will happen is that we have a leak. Oh my gosh! How do I know that there's a leak? Right
1:57
Because it's like in the basement and I don't go down into the basement. But the sensor should
2:02
trigger its event. There we go. So it has an 80 decibel audible alarm. It's not super loud. It's
2:11
not intended to be super loud because the notification will actually come up on your phone
2:17
And sure enough I am seeing a notification saying leak detected. Now I've already assigned this
2:23
utility room as its location in my home but it is already telling me that there's a leak. And this
2:29
would be true. I would get that notification if I was hundreds or thousands of miles away
2:35
And you can see it's just like increasing its anxiety about the whole thing. And it's just like
2:40
come on help me. You got a leak. Seriously dude. So we're going to end that leak by taking this out
2:46
of the water. And I'll dry it off. And so that should be good. And now we will get another
2:52
notification that the leak event has ended. And let's see. So looks like we're still getting
2:58
those notifications. So you can see they're coming in just as text messages. Nice and simple
3:03
But let's go ahead and launch the SimpleSense app too while we're at it. And you can see here
3:09
that I have one sensor and it's assigned to utility room which is in my basement
3:14
And if I go into it then you can see things like the sensor history and you can also change its
3:19
location or change notifications or add people. So if you have someone who's a property manager
3:25
on site because you have a vacation home in the Bahamas, congratulations, but you could have one
3:30
of these in the unit and it can notify both your property manager and you. Now of course this
3:37
assumes the Wi-Fi is still working but hopefully that's the case when you have a water leak
3:41
And I will tell you here in Boulder, Colorado it wasn't that long ago that we had catastrophic
3:47
floods. And I had friends who had like everything in their basement ruined because they didn't
3:52
realize the leak and water was coming into their basement until it was too late and there were like
3:58
eight inches of water and it had soaked and destroyed everything. So had they have just
4:03
been able to put this at the very bottom, just literally just leave it on the floor of their
4:07
basement as soon as they got a quarter inch of water if not less, then it would have started
4:12
alerting them and they would have said what and they went downstairs and they're like oh my god
4:18
So it would have been a real win. And I gotta say it also actually does temperature sensor too
4:26
So it doesn't actually tell you the temperature but if there's a freeze event it will tell you
4:30
that too. Obviously benefit for in the winter when you have pipes and you're worried that your
4:35
pipe might burst or something. Having this literally just sitting near it is enough that
4:40
you'll be able to know what's going on. Super cool. So that's it. I mean it's a really simple device
4:46
It's a simple design. The app is simple. It looks like we have a clear event. Oh no it's because
4:52
I'm touching it so it thinks that maybe my fingers are a suspicious water event. But we are significantly
4:59
made out of water so it's not entirely unreasonable. But more importantly this is the whole thing
5:05
It's literally this small. It's just tiny, weighs barely anything. It works actually off of two
5:12
AAA batteries that last two years like I said. If it's time to replace them there's a way you can
5:18
pop the back off and just put in two new batteries. Put it back in and you're good to go. And in fact
5:24
in the app if you noticed earlier, I'll bring the screenshot up again, it shows you the battery
5:28
status. So if you just check once a month you know you get into the habit of well let's see how
5:33
that water sensor is doing. It's like oh it's below 20 percent. Let me put in a new battery so I don't
5:37
have to worry about it. Or maybe you just automatically every time you're doing spring
5:42
cleaning and you're going through and cleaning and putting in new batteries and all your fire
5:46
alarms and everything which you do. So then at the same time you can go and double
5:51
check this or just go and put new batteries in. Simple and easy. Really really great addition to
5:57
your house or any other property or commercial property if you're worried about that too
6:01
So let me tell you the price because it's not actually that bad a price either. But before we
6:06
get there I'm going to ask that you go ahead and click on that subscribe button if you will
6:10
Because I appreciate when you subscribe to my channel. Sweet. Now this SimpleSense Wi-Fi leak
6:17
detector. Highly recommended. $59.95 at amazon.com. Just get a couple. Put them behind your sinks. Put
6:25
them in the basement at the lowest possible point. I have a sump pump. I'm going to put it in the
6:29
space immediately adjacent to the sump pump because if that thing stops working or something happens
6:35
to it and water starts to rise I want to know as soon as darn possible. I don't want to wait until
6:40
I happen to go downstairs and say what is that smell or what is that sound or what the heck
6:44
Something's there's like it's so musty. So this solves all those problems and it solves it
6:50
elegantly and neatly. So highly recommended. Like I said this is Dave Taylor. I'm going to put it
6:56
back in the water which means I will catch you in my next video
