The SAVE Student Loan Plan Is Ending: Do This Now ⏰
Oct 4, 2026
The SAVE student loan plan is over, and if you do nothing, your payment could jump. SAVE officially ended in March 2026. When your loan servicer sends your notice, you have 90 days to pick a new repayment plan. Miss that deadline, and you'll likely be moved to the standard plan: fixed payments based on your balance, not your income.
Your main options:
• RAP (Repayment Assistance Plan): the new plan, with payments of 1–10% of your income
• An income-driven plan like IBR
• A standard plan, if you want it paid off faster
Do this now: check your email for the notice, find your deadline, and use the Loan Simulator at studentaid.gov/loan-simulator to pick the plan that costs you the least.
As of October 2026. Deadlines vary by servicer notice, and some borrowers have reported extensions. Check studentaid.gov for your own loans. Educational only, not financial advice.
