The LG Gram 17 is the thinnest and lightest 17-inch laptop I've ever seen. It comes in under 3 pounds putting it in the same weight category as the 13-inch MacBook Air. So is this the best laptop of 2019 or are the compromises too much?

What am I using? I'm using the Xtreme, the X1 Xtreme, the X1 Carbon. It's so much fun
0:05
I'm exploring the universe of Windows laptops. That's what brought me here today
0:10
This is the 17-inch Gram. 2.95 pounds and a 17-inch laptop. Now, to put that in perspective, that's as heavy as a 13-inch MacBook Air, or as light, I should say
0:22
Granted, it's not like a crazy powerhouse or anything like that. It's got the Intel graphics inside of it, so keep that in mind if you're a gamer
0:29
The display is QHD so it's 2560 by 1600. It's an IPS display also
0:34
Let's see how it stacks up. I'm curious about the keyboard. I'm trying a lot of them
0:40
And I'm curious. Oh my goodness gracious, that is crazy light. Wait, wow
0:46
It feels like a dummy laptop. You know when you're walking through IKEA and in the setup there, it feels like a dummy, like a fake
0:52
That's how light this thing is. Not a huge power brick either, that's pretty portable
0:56
Type C to wired Ethernet. This is hard to believe. It doesn't even make sense how light this laptop is
1:08
Boom. I thought 17 inch laptops were dead I had a 17 inch MacBook Pro once upon a time That thing was a tank Toshiba laptop before any of this all started I thought it was the coolest guy
1:21
Fans were going off. I had an external monitor. I thought I was the coolest guy
1:26
There was nothing cool about it. Look at us now. Look at today. Things have changed
1:30
SD card slot, headphone jack, two traditional USB ports. There's a Kensington lock
1:36
Your power port. I wish it was type C, though there is a type C port
1:40
An HDMI out and another USB port. Under 3 pounds, still got a wide array of port availability
1:47
Okay, we crack it open. Oooooh. The cover. And there it is
1:52
Look how slim the bezel is. A pretty typical layout on the deck
1:57
Chiclet style keyboard. It opens to this extent. Go ahead and boot this up
2:03
Okay, little bit of flex in the deck. I noticed that right away
2:06
You see that? Jack, the deck. It's not like a solid piece of aluminum so you're starting to figure out how they're getting the weight of this thing down so much
2:15
You know you're carrying this thing around frequently. The difference between three and five or six pounds even, that's substantial
2:24
The key travel is probably somewhere above the low profile butterfly switch on the MacBook Pro You get a little bit of travel but it ain much It ain ThinkPad territory They also squished in the number pad over here
2:39
Now, I don't use that at all. Typing, you're kind of, you're off center. Now, the trackpad is glass
2:44
Taking my first glance at the display, and I have to say it's probably the best part
2:49
It's just a lot of screen. I don't feel like the hardware experience is on par with some of the stuff I've been using
2:57
Let's go ahead and load up some video here on YouTube and see what we're working with sound-wise
3:03
This trackpad, it's... You see that, Jack? It travels, maybe in this case, too much
3:10
But this one is more supercharged. It's called the Thunderpuck. They're firing down onto the desk
3:17
You get a certain harshness to the sound sometimes. Could get some speakers on the deck like facing me resonates the sound and depending on it's just a pretty harsh experience
3:27
But it's a bit of a shame because that's a good-looking video right there. Look at this check
3:31
It's a great place to watch something if you want to call the thing the gram you got to get down sub three pounds
3:38
That's what this laptop is right here And it like can you really do that and maintain the caliber of the various components at the same time Another thing I just noticed is that because of the number pad the track pad has to be offset a little bit to the left
3:51
So that's one thing I would definitely change It's really about the display with this unit in the lightest package possible. We'll get in here for a second
3:58
Oh, he brought his MacBook Pro, which is definitely heavier than this. Check it out. Oh, wow. Yeah, that's ridiculous
4:05
This almost feels like plastic. You went with the gray sweatshirt today. Yeah, and a black hat
4:10
Yeah, see I don't like this. Oh my god, this feels heavy now
4:14
I mean, I can barely pick this up. That's a tank, man! It's hard to be super lightweight and give the impression of quality
4:21
This kind of brings back memories of like the iPhone 4 when it first came out
4:26
It was just so different from the Samsung Galaxy line, because the Samsung phones were plastic at the time
4:33
The iPhone just had like a premium feel, you know, and it's because of the weight
4:37
Are you having a moment right now? Ladies and gentlemen, Willie B. It's going to be in a backpack all day
4:42
There's a student. Yeah. There's a DJ. The difference between three pounds and four pounds and five pounds and six pounds
4:54
It's not the laptop for me, though, but it's pretty amazing. I agree
