ladies and
0:02
gentlemen we had one of our relatives
0:04
come home today yes sir absolutely come
0:07
on man this is one of our relatives he
0:09
came home today um we met him a lot of
0:13
us um met him through the work he did
0:17
with on black panther give him a ground
0:19
of Applause for that clap keep clapping
0:21
for that what you know um beautiful
0:25
inbaku
0:27
I think I said it correctly I want the
0:30
put I want to put theu Baku what are you
0:33
doing here
0:37
yes he was right on his come on man um
0:41
and he he's gone on to just keep that
0:44
level of Integrity in his work uh
0:47
sustain um that level of greatness in
0:50
his work and we had a chance to talk
0:52
with him in the past before in each
0:55
conversation you know even looking back
0:57
before I knew he was coming today I went
0:59
back and tapped into some of our old
1:00
conversations and was like yo we really
1:03
had a good time yo you know so I'm
1:05
really looking forward to this one I
1:07
want to welcome him back to the show uh
1:09
here to talk about the character Dan
1:11
Tucker from the movie The Fall Guy give
1:13
it up for the one and only Winston Duke
1:15
Winston Winston Duke what's up man I I
1:19
can't even imagine first of all how are
1:21
you I am great I am great brother I'm
1:24
doing great I am promoting a movie I am
1:27
living I am a lot of things amen what's
1:30
this hat on you got the coordinator oh
1:32
the coordinator so it's for you know I
1:35
play the stunt coordinator and the Fall
1:37
Guy okay so we made this hat and it's
1:40
it's been pretty dope it's been pretty
1:41
dope okay hey man can you go anywhere in
1:45
public now and people not stop you what
1:48
does that like now uh abs and flows I'm
1:51
not going to lie to you so sometimes
1:52
it's hard to to go around different
1:55
places in public and then sometimes it's
1:57
very easy depends on where you go mhm so
2:00
when I'm promoting a movie and I'm all
2:02
over the airwaves it's harder uh it's
2:04
harder to be around younger people and
2:07
people of color cuz those are the
2:08
communities that know me the the most
2:11
and then in spaces where it's
2:13
predominantly white and older no I'm I'm
2:15
all right you're all right right they're
2:17
just handing you their Empty
2:20
Glass out not that bad it's not that bad
2:23
what sport do you play yeah I was going
2:25
to say Shaquille o' a lot or you know if
2:28
we have this ation I didn't know we're
2:30
going to have this one not you know I
2:33
get the so what do you do exactly you
2:35
know the the probing question of what
2:37
have you done to deserve to be in the
2:40
same space as as us I get that and
2:43
that's always cryptic so what's been
2:46
good is kind
2:47
of letting the people who are my safe
2:50
spaces understand the questions that are
2:52
being asked they help protect me as
2:56
well do you ever uh unveil your your
3:00
true subconscious thoughts when you hear
3:02
these weird ass questions from these
3:05
disconnected people no you don't you
3:06
don't say that's a dumb question why you
3:08
asking me that no you don't do that nah
3:11
you know there's a there's a lot of you
3:13
know you gotta you got to think the long
3:16
game all right I'm a definitely a long
3:19
game kind of person I would
3:22
say uh I'm often tested uh in spaces
3:27
where I'm the only one of me and I'm
3:31
often tested in spaces that are not very
3:34
safe and where you don't
3:37
always so I always say some of the most
3:40
unsafe spaces are disguised as
3:44
just average everyday spaces so I was
3:47
shooting and I've never really told this
3:50
story publicly before but I was shooting
3:52
a TV show um that I ended up leaving for
3:56
a lot of reasons and and an injury but
3:59
but I went to get uh I went to what do
4:04
you call that the people who do your
4:06
skin Dermatology dermatologist they sent
4:08
me to the dermatologist from the
4:11
production um because I had a pimple and
4:14
you can't have a big pimple on screen so
4:15
they just sent me to get like a
4:16
cortisone shot in the pimple to get rid
4:18
of it in some hours so they I know I
4:22
didn't know you could do that yeah well
4:24
Secrets okay all Trade Secrets okay um
4:28
but essenti
4:30
they paid for it the production paid for
4:32
it um I show up just to get the shot and
4:36
leave but you go to a doctor's office
4:38
you might have to fill out some
4:39
paperwork so I fill out all the
4:40
paperwork and I said I can't put my home
4:43
address on
4:44
this um for my own safety I just don't
4:48
give out my home address but
4:49
everything's already paid for I gave you
4:52
all my other information including
4:54
social you know what I mean I just don't
4:56
put my home address on on casual
4:58
paperwork
5:00
um and the staff member at the counter
5:04
just goes off on me like who the hell do
5:06
you think you are you have to fill it
5:07
out what do well if you can't fill it
5:10
out you're going to have to leave and
5:11
I'm like well you're also not the doctor
5:13
you can't tell me that you're going to
5:15
re refuse me service that's already been
5:16
paid for and they're like you're being
5:19
belligerent you're threatening me right
5:22
cuz I said if you continue with this I
5:23
don't know if this is going to be great
5:25
for you I said that verbum and then he
5:28
goes if you don't leave I'm going to
5:31
call the police and he called the police
5:32
on he called the police he called the
5:35
police on
5:39
me Winston the drama here yeah no no no
5:42
no he called no he called the police on
5:45
me and it was in Virginia uh what's the
5:48
what's the capital there of Virginia
5:49
what is anybody any smart intelligent
5:51
people I don't know Richmond Richmond
5:54
Virginia don't you know that Richmond I
5:56
said it all right go ahead Richmond
5:58
Virginia
6:00
and I'm literally standing there and I'm
6:04
like so you're going to tell the police
6:05
that I'm man in like leggings right now
6:07
cuz I'm wearing like workout clothes I
6:09
was wearing shorts and leggings and I
6:11
was like you're going to tell me a man
6:12
in in leggings is threatening you for a
6:14
facial is that what you're going to call
6:16
the cops and
6:18
tell like this is the complaint yeah uh
6:22
police shows up I before they got there
6:25
I'm like okay I got to call everybody so
6:27
they know cuz I'm not going to go
6:30
and get into uh a misunderstanding in
6:33
the parking lot and I lose my life so I
6:38
called my agents I called my manager I
6:41
called you know my publicist I called it
6:45
was CBS at the time and apple and I
6:49
called everybody I could to just let
6:51
them know what's going on that they just
6:53
called the police on me and I'm here on
6:56
work business yes and the police show up
7:00
they do their thing which is I said I'm
7:02
not leaving and they got in my face I
7:04
was like you need to step outside where
7:07
I was like well I'm GNA leave my bag
7:12
yeah you don't You Don't Own Me You
7:15
Don't Own Me I'm going to leave I'm but
7:17
I'm going to leave my my bag right there
7:19
he gets to stay yeah so I left my bag
7:22
and I went outside and it was a black
7:25
cop and a white cop and the black cop
7:27
recognized me uh uh to which he started
7:31
uh apologizing but I'm so sorry man I'm
7:33
so sorry that you had to go through this
7:35
but you know this is Richmond that's
7:36
what he said this is Richmond and [ __ ] I
7:41
understand uh you know if you showed up
7:43
here with like an Entourage and cameras
7:45
and stuff I bet they wouldn't treat you
7:47
like that and I I'm an emotional person
7:49
so I got a bit te eyed and I said you
7:52
know I shouldn't have to show up with an
7:55
Entourage to get basic treatment right
7:59
like B SI treatment like anybody else I
8:00
don't care that it is Richmond but now
8:03
that you know and you realize how wrong
8:04
they are you're going to do anything mhm
8:07
and they're like yeah we can't do
8:09
anything and that was one of the days I
8:10
learned that you know their main job is
8:13
to protect property and not people but
8:15
uh but it was a it was a rough it was a
8:17
rough lesson it's a rough lesson man so
8:20
again and I was like you know I should
8:22
live live stream this I should put it on
8:25
Instagram I should this I should that
8:27
and I said what's the long the long term
8:30
of this like do I blow this
8:32
up surround my name and everything that
8:36
I'm doing around this drama or do I just
8:41
keep doing what I'm doing which is great
8:42
work like every all of this is just a
8:45
distraction from why I'm really here
8:47
which is for the work there you go and
8:50
to do the jobs and to for the real
8:53
impact of making art and creating
8:57
conversations that really impact people
8:59
people and not just trigger people and
9:02
their trauma because you know I
9:06
had that's horrible yeah you know it's
9:08
things like this you make decisions and
9:10
then the next day right so I would have
9:12
blown this up and then the next day it
9:14
was announced at that time that I had
9:16
gotten invited into the academy as a
9:19
voter wow okay right and you never know
9:22
what could push things away from the
9:25
positives that you need the real tools
9:27
that you need to create impact so again
9:31
uh before we started this conversation
9:33
live we were talking about you know yeah
9:37
uh the power of of shouting and
9:40
whispering and I think uh there's
9:42
nothing wrong with either of those two
9:44
things I think culturally you know what
9:47
brought us through many moments
9:51
of strife and and and and bondage was
9:57
whispering we whispered a lot get out of
10:00
like unsafe
10:01
spaces and then the time for shouting
10:04
came right time for shouting and and
10:07
organizing and understanding your
10:09
mission and putting that out there came
10:12
and we had to be loud and be at the
10:14
Forefront of things but I think we now
10:17
believe in a world full of amplification
10:20
we're all very Amplified we all have
10:22
like we all have our our our platforms
10:27
everybody's got a platform everybody got
10:28
a microphone everybody's got a
10:29
microphone and not everybody has
10:31
something to say not everybody fact
10:33
checks not everybody does the real thing
10:36
and we figured we forgotten that there
10:38
are some Seasons that you need to
10:40
whisper through you need to whisper
10:42
right uh as much as you got to shout and
10:44
and you have to to to be able to discern
10:47
the difference uh in them so yeah
10:51
Winston Duke is here man Hey listen we
10:54
go and I did a movie and he did a movie
10:57
come on man we going talk about that
10:59
movie man we going talk let's talk about
11:01
the movie coming back we going to let
11:03
that conversation breathe the Fall Guy
11:06
that's what we going to talk about 888
11:08
742
11:10
3345 sh45 man what a great
11:15
conversation wion Duke is here
11:18
yeah he plays Dan Tucker on the Fall Guy
11:22
who is Ryan Gosling's character best
11:24
friend right MH mhm my man Ryan man
11:28
Ryan's having a run boy Ryan's having a
11:31
run he's doing it he's a citizen to sway
11:33
in the morning with have to be Tracy G
11:36
uh tell me about the fall guide and I
11:38
got a couple of questions I want to ask
11:39
you about it absolutely absolutely so
11:42
the short and sweet is the Fall Guy is a
11:44
remake of an old TV show called The Fall
11:47
Guy with Lee Majors oh yeah who plays
11:50
Steve Austin in a $6 Million Man exactly
11:53
exactly so it's a remake of that old
11:56
classic uh remade by Ryan Frank Gosling
11:59
and David Leech David Leech famously
12:02
known for you know all the big action
12:05
tent po that's happening right now uhuh
12:08
um so he's the action man and uh yeah
12:11
it's an action comedy but it's a little
12:14
bit of everything okay it's a little bit
12:16
of a paa of a movie it's got everything
12:19
in it it's got some funny it's got you
12:22
know big action it actually takes itself
12:25
not too serious but still remains very
12:27
heartfelt and it feels like all those
12:31
big action movies like bad boys and
12:33
things like that that got you into
12:35
movies a lot of the time too like that
12:38
and it's about two the focus is on stunt
12:41
performers right yes so we're making a
12:44
movie in a movie so the movie is about a
12:46
group of filmmakers making a movie and
12:49
something terrible happens on set and
12:52
the main stuntman played by Ryan Gosling
12:55
has to use his stunt ability to solve
12:58
this mystery the reason why I think this
13:01
movie is great is because you rarely
13:04
hear about the stunt men absolutely you
13:06
know and even when you look and these
13:08
people risk their lives right you got
13:11
you got people like Patrick swayy or Tom
13:13
Cruz who tend to do their own stunts
13:16
right rest in power to Patrick sesy but
13:18
Tom Cruz is adamant about doing he's
13:20
been injured by doing his own stunts I
13:23
think Jackie Chan as well was doing his
13:25
own yeah this is true right but when you
13:27
go you go to the Emy and in the SAG
13:29
Awards they have stunt categories right
13:32
that you that they award to stunt men
13:34
but in the Oscars the academy has yet to
13:36
do that has yet to recognize them and uh
13:40
you know it's like anything else when
13:42
it's done really well it goes unnoticed
13:45
right like it's any relationship where
13:47
anything is going really well you don't
13:49
notice that you even need it and the
13:51
contribution it's it's bringing to the
13:53
table so the stunt performers they've
13:56
been doing that for so long that they've
13:58
to some degree become victims of their
14:00
own success uhhuh um the entire film
14:03
industry has been built on the backs of
14:05
stunt people the movies that travel the
14:07
most around the world are action movies
14:11
right movies where a lot of the
14:12
storytelling is being told because of
14:14
the action so we don't need to translate
14:17
as much words right so those are the
14:19
movies that do the best over the all
14:21
over the world and these are the people
14:23
who've made them their
14:25
entire the career right right yeah so
14:28
you know there's no way of separating
14:30
film history from the stunt uh the stunt
14:34
departments and that's that's that's
14:36
what we're talking about here and I
14:37
think there's been a really big
14:39
misdirection because when you think of
14:41
stunts and stunt people you think of the
14:44
physicality you think of you know the
14:46
muscularity of these men and women but
14:48
you don't think of the math the science
14:51
like yeah you one inch to the left and
14:55
someone breaks their neck [ __ ] one yeah
14:58
one inch to the left to the left someone
15:00
breaks their neck someone doesn't go
15:02
home if uh if a stunt coordinator or a
15:05
stunt person lies everyone on on set
15:09
could be in danger of losing their lives
15:12
right and it takes as much creativity
15:14
and I think we we've just become our own
15:17
victims of of just not understanding
15:21
language you know we're not looking at
15:23
artists in its full sense artists
15:25
Artistry is really defined by uh uh
15:29
sacrifice and these men and women
15:32
sacrifice a lot and they sacrifice as
15:34
much as any other creative Department I
15:36
said yeah costume light set everything
15:40
but the difference is they also risk
15:43
their bodies yeah in lives they need
15:45
lives and bodies yeah so yeah as an
15:49
actor uh when you want to do your own
15:53
stunts like a Patrick SW well these are
15:55
two box off I can't use them as examples
15:58
but you can actors negotiate more pay
16:01
when they do their own stunts um maybe
16:04
some I haven't come across that yet okay
16:07
so maybe someday in my career I'll be
16:09
negotiating for more but on on that
16:12
sense but I think there's always a stunt
16:15
man or a stunt woman that's available to
16:18
do these things I think uh even when you
16:21
have actors that say I do all my own
16:23
stunts no one does all their own stunts
16:26
right so you always have the stunt team
16:29
helping to put everything together
16:31
testing things sometimes developing some
16:33
of the moves and teaching you on set
16:38
what it is or you supplement some of the
16:41
of the stunts yourself because they got
16:42
a cut between their face and your face
16:45
and then you know put some of it in
16:47
together so there's a lot more of an
16:51
intimate knitting of what it what
16:54
happens on set so nobody and have to
16:58
think about moving you can't make it on
16:59
your own music is different you
17:01
sometimes you could be self-generative
17:03
in in all ways but the actor needs a
17:06
writer a writer needs a director
17:09
director needs the entire cast and crew
17:12
and and a whole Community to make a
17:15
movie or anything that's on screen
17:18
happens right so we all need each other
17:22
that's how we are in this room right
17:24
Heather would you agree okay thought I
17:27
think it's a really good idea though
17:29
if you would participate I'm just I I
17:31
thought that's how we functioned here I
17:33
don't know torch is the producer look uh
17:37
Jake the kiss we don't really know what
17:39
he does uh you see but he does something
17:43
Jasper's new today he's just yeah Jasper
17:46
yeah look how excited my team looks all
17:50
right wow no man is an island no man is
17:53
an island this is true and your
17:55
character in the movie plays the best
17:57
friend of Ryan G right um I'm wondering
18:01
did y' have to do any type of chemistry
18:03
test did y hang out honestly the
18:05
chemistry test was just the first day
18:08
and I came in I had my own little
18:10
Mission I was like he's got a big name
18:12
he's this guy and I got to like I got to
18:14
make him my friend immediately yeah
18:15
right and do you try to do it Off Script
18:18
or you try to do I I just jumped in you
18:21
know that's how I that's how I work you
18:23
know uh I'm I'm playful I'm at times
18:26
Fearless I have a lot of fear but I'm
18:28
times fearless and in my work I get to
18:32
really I get to to to to to express that
18:36
so first thing I did was we're in the
18:38
middle of a scene and I sto and I go you
18:39
know got really goodl looking eyes man
18:42
and he go a shut up man shut up get out
18:45
of here and I think it really broke all
18:48
of the walls down and immediately we
18:52
started talking in between like uh the
18:56
the the the takes on set like he's
18:58
telling me about how he grew up he grew
19:01
up with a single
19:02
mom um he grew up with a single mom um
19:06
immigrant because they're Canadian a lot
19:08
of people don't realize Ryan Gosling is
19:10
Canadian uh so he has his own immigrant
19:13
experience which you know we we could
19:15
bond over um a lot of different things
19:18
and I was still am going through just
19:22
the grief I I had lost my mom like two
19:25
weeks prior uh so when I had seen you
19:28
guys last I was literally in the in the
19:30
middle of of working through that so wow
19:34
they all knew on set and he was always
19:36
like is there anything you need so
19:38
through all of that we just bonded and a
19:41
movie like this where we do so much
19:43
improv it has to it has to be a safe
19:46
space yeah has to be a safe space to
19:48
just throw things out see what sticks
19:50
have to know that your your your
19:52
Playmates on set are willing to just go
19:56
there exactly so
19:59
it was that and it happened really
20:01
quickly yeah and a movie it's it's funny
20:04
so the smaller a movie is I would say
20:07
often the more figured out it is yeah
20:09
uhhuh and a bigger a movie is the more
20:12
it's changing and we're getting new
20:13
scripts and new lines and we haven't
20:16
figured out the third act and it's like
20:19
you have to just be open to things
20:22
shifting yeah
20:23
so it was that kind of thing it was that
20:26
kind of thing where you just had to to
20:27
know that things are going to be
20:28
shifting and if you don't have a safe
20:30
space I think that's where you get some
20:32
of these like onset like scary stories
20:36
okay yeah we get a lot of them here too
20:38
yeah I think well that I
20:40
think outside of the the minutia of the
20:45
details I think usually when you get a
20:48
lot of that is when you hear that this
20:50
the space wasn't safe yeah and the safe
20:53
the space wasn't safe for all these
20:55
different reasons and I think that's
20:57
what made this work it worked because we
21:00
had like great upper classman which I
21:03
looked at Ryan as because he's been
21:05
doing it for so long uh Emily Blunt
21:09
Emily Blunt salute to her she been on
21:10
the show too yeah yeah so it was that
21:13
kind of thing where you had good people
21:17
making a fun project it's uh it's an
21:19
action comedy so it's one of those where
21:22
you just you laugh in between takes like
21:24
I can't believe you just did that you
21:25
know it was one of those things so it
21:27
was just a fun
21:29
light space and that's what came out and
21:31
that's what people are responding top we
21:32
talking about the Fall Guy man make sure
21:34
you check this movie out you know we
21:37
find ourselves laughing like that all
21:39
the time Wiston so you know I get it uh
21:42
I want to take one caller because she's
21:44
been waiting so uh patiently and the
21:46
other ones I'm going have to get to next
21:48
time but Alex Alexis is on the line from
21:50
Georgia go ahead
21:52
Alexis hello can you hear me yes indeed
21:56
clear hi Winston are
22:00
you oh my God I'm so excited to talk to
22:03
you I saw you Black Panther and I fell
22:06
in love with you and I never thought I'd
22:08
be able to talk to you but I'm so
22:10
excited hi you did so good in the movie
22:13
so
22:14
beautiful thank you thank you thank you
22:16
I'm really glad to meet you
22:19
too yeah my aunt is here she wants to
22:21
say hi you know this is
22:24
hysterical I think they just wanted to
22:26
say hi I'm I'm good with that that I'm
22:28
good with that who your aunt you never
22:30
know what live questions are going to be
22:32
so I'm good where's your
22:35
auntie nice to you guys all right that
22:38
was I like that was
22:40
Auntie yeah I don't have a listen listen
22:42
listen Alexis and Auntie Alexis you have
22:44
a opportunity to ask Winston Duke one
22:47
question and hear him respond to
22:49
whatever is on your mind what would that
22:51
question
22:52
be what do you have a question Auntie
22:54
I'm uh Winston are you married that was
22:57
my
23:00
they cut right to the chase
23:03
withon the
23:05
[Music]
23:06
DM uh no I am not married no no I'm not
23:10
married not
23:12
yet plenty of time for that Hey listen
23:15
I'm in Atlanta so if you're ever here
23:18
okay yeah you're gonna do that in front
23:20
of your on
23:22
huh they conspired they conspired she
23:25
told her to call okay hey Alexis uh hit
23:28
them on his social
23:29
media Winston C Duke okay all
23:35
right man we could do that you got
23:37
another one you got another one I can
23:39
get them man who want who want to talk
23:41
to Winston Duke
23:45
[Music]
23:57
888742410 great conversation with him uh
24:00
really great powerful conversation
24:02
Winston before you go when you spoke
24:04
about that story and I appreciate you
24:05
sharing this story uh of of of That
24:09
Awkward Moment um uh where you were
24:12
scary moment that scary moment Virginia
24:15
yeah when you're in those moments it
24:18
requires you use the word tools M um it
24:22
requires um some type of methodology
24:26
that comes right in time to give you the
24:29
wherewithal to know I'm not going to
24:31
react to this cuz I'm thinking of the L
24:33
gang but to get to that point I think
24:36
requires practice and discipline for me
24:39
unfortunately yeah practice means going
24:42
through a lot of other moments right and
24:45
discipline is recognizing you in that
24:47
moment and being able part of discipline
24:50
being able to direct your mind to make
24:53
the choices that's not going to make the
24:54
moment a downward spiral absolutely do
24:57
you meditate
24:59
uh do you read um how do you discipline
25:03
your
25:03
mind you know that's a great question
25:08
um I don't want to sound like some sort
25:11
of like Yogi because I always I also
25:13
think that's a that's a problem that a
25:15
lot of us have is like we we set these
25:17
things up like they're not practices
25:19
that happen very casually and every day
25:23
and
25:24
commonly um I feel like I don't do
25:27
anything in in particular I just know
25:30
I'm trying to
25:32
survive okay right I know I know I'm
25:34
trying to survive this moment uhuh and I
25:37
think a lot of us especially black
25:39
people people of color
25:42
women um a lot of us who deal with
25:44
oppression and oppression very
25:47
consistently commonly you just you know
25:51
you have to be the commonest person in
25:52
the room MH right so I've adopted a
25:55
saying of staying out of staying out of
25:57
the traffic
25:59
staying out of the traffic staying out
26:00
of the traffic so if you are watching
26:03
traffic and you're in your apartment or
26:05
you're in your house and you see traffic
26:07
happening you could see it traffic's
26:09
happening are you in the traffic nah no
26:13
are you stopping is it stopping you from
26:16
getting anywhere is it bringing a lot of
26:18
stress to you no if you're in your car
26:23
and ah man my perception of times I got
26:25
to be here and what the hell why this
26:27
person cut me me off blah blah blah blah
26:29
blah blah blah you're in it yeah and
26:32
it's important to try to stay out of the
26:35
traffic keep your head out of the
26:37
traffic and whenever you feel like
26:39
you're in the traffic you can always
26:41
pull out you have that you have that you
26:43
have that ability you have that ability
26:46
to not say that
26:48
thing to feel that feeling and not react
26:52
right now yeah not right now mhm you
26:55
have the ability to say I'm going to
26:57
step back and I'm going to make a plan
26:59
I'm going to call someone I'm going to
27:01
alert people I'm going to make a
27:04
plan that tomorrow or five minutes from
27:07
now I'm gonna I'm GNA get an opportunity
27:10
to take other
27:11
steps and I try very hard to stay out of
27:15
the traffic stay out of the traffic
27:17
Winston Duke man all right I love you
27:19
man Renardo you're going to take us home
27:22

27:25

28:05

28:09
the last year I became a un Ambassador
28:12
for sustainable tourism wow I've uh
28:15
encountered and I've been working with a
28:17
lot of people on their own personal
28:18
stories and I've been influenced so I'm
28:21
very excited by the work that I can now
28:23
