if you don't practice.
0:04
>> [applause and cheering]
0:05
>> You know what I mean? Heather can't keep
0:06
running if you don't practice.
0:07
>> Well, she's a track star.
0:10
>> She's a runner, she's a track star. Hey,
0:12
this is a celebration.
0:15
Southern California, stand up and

0:18
applause, man. The United States

entertainment. Um it's going to be a
0:51
communal um aspect to this. Communities
0:53

0:58
It's a great social event as well.

1:22
Um I want to say congratulations
1:25
um to the founders of the Pacific Coast
1:28
Shockwaves.
1:30
We got La Monica is here.
1:32
And we got Mike.
1:35
And they are here with us today, Heather
1:36
B. I This is my first time meeting them
1:38
in person.
1:39
>> We've been on a Zoom calls just planning
1:42
for this big event. I wanted to
1:44
personally thank them for including us
1:47
in to be a part of this. This is one of
1:49
my childhood loves is track and field
1:52
and it's just something I talk about
1:53
often on this show. I get a lot of
1:55
non-believers, too, Mike. Like Heather
1:58
doesn't believe my track and field
1:59
prowess. You know, I
2:01
>> I don't believe his records.
2:03
>> My records, you know.
2:05
>> he suited up, but some of the records
2:07
are questionable.
2:08
>> You know, we you know, I was a OAL
2:10
champion from the 10th grade. You see?
2:13
You know, 11th grade, 12th grade, triple
2:15
jump, 300 meter hurdles, you know,
2:19
Oakland High, we won every single year.
2:21
We were dynasty, Mike.
2:22
>> That's right.
2:22
>> A dynasty, right?
2:24
I grew up in AAU. I ran the hurdles in
2:27
AAU. The mile relay, triple jump, long
2:29
jump, high jump, shot put.
2:31
>> Ooh.
2:32
>> Everything.
2:32
>> I could have been a triathlete, Mike.
2:34
>> You see where [screaming] it gets
2:35
sketchy, Mike, right?
2:36
>> have done that, bro.
2:37
>> to get longer you go.
2:38
>> doing, right? Right? You see what I'm
2:40
doing, man?
2:41
>> all the things.
2:41
>> These kids these days they'll say, "I
2:43
want to see you go do it." I said,
2:45
"Well, we've done it. We've done it
2:46
better than you, so you better keep
2:47
working."
2:48
>> There you go.
2:49
>> Okay.
2:49
>> And that's what I say to you, Heather. I
2:50
have done it. Lamana tell, welcome to
2:53
the show, Mike. Welcome to the show.
2:55
Give them a big round of applause.
2:57
Can Can you put this to words?
3:01
How big how huge it is um that Pacific
3:06
Coast Shockwaves won the bid for the
3:08
USATF National Junior Olympic Track and
3:11
Field Championship, Mike. I'll start
3:13
with you.
3:13
>> Yeah, it it it's an amazing
3:15
I I would call it a feat because
3:19
us competing against the other the other
3:21
bidders, very very competitive process.
3:24
It's a large long arduous process. And
3:28
I'll tell you it's a nationwide process.
3:31
And
3:32
we were competing against the major
3:33
universities, cities that were backing
3:36
them. And what's unique about us, we are
3:39
the first team to host a Junior
3:41
Olympics. So, that that in itself is
3:43
unique, but most importantly
3:45
we are essentially USATF. It is us. We
3:50
are kids are USATF athletes. We were
3:53
USATF actually we're little so we're
3:55
Athletic Congress before they became USA
3:57
Track and Field athletes.
3:59
>> TAC. And so we are focused in on
4:02
athlete. It's all athlete focused,
4:04
right? This ain't a corporation type
4:06
thing. This is all about grassroots.
4:09
Get on this show with you. You've been a
4:11
amazing inspiration for us. You know, we
4:13
go way back but when he started, we were
4:15
starting college. And so uh
4:17
you know, being able to to really look
4:20
at this from a different lens and I'm
4:23
I'm telling everybody who's listening
4:26
our whole goal is to ensure that each
4:28
and every athlete has an amazing
4:30
experience. We're talking about those
4:31
core memories. That's what we're trying
4:33
to have. Those positive core memories
4:35
that they'll be able to just like
4:37
>> Yeah.
4:37
>> have the piece like he's been saying,
4:38
right?
4:38
>> Yeah, a lot of core memories.
4:40
>> of core memories.
4:40
>> He very had too many.
4:41
>> Like it was [laughter] yesterday, Mike.
4:43
I was on the track yesterday, man.
4:45
>> Yes.
4:45
>> I won the Northern California Regionals
4:48
in junior college for the 400 meter
4:50
hurdles.
4:51
>> The 400 meter hurdles race out there.
4:52
>> I just needed to say that. It didn't
4:54
even fit nowhere.
4:55
>> [laughter]
4:56
>> Is there proof?
4:57
>> Yeah, I could call my brother. He was
4:58
right there.
4:59
>> member. That that's different.
5:01
>> was right there. [laughter]
5:02
Now, this is amazing and and LaMonica
5:04
for folks who don't know, man, like you
5:06
know, first of all, LA is winning when
5:09
it comes to track and field because we
5:11
will have the Olympics here in a couple
5:12
of years and this is just a prelude to
5:15
it. And can you can you kind of paint
5:18
the picture of what people will see when
5:20
they come out to this year's Junior
5:21
Olympics?
5:22
>> Oh, man.
5:23
You know, the world is coming. The the
5:25
nation is coming to Los Angeles on both
5:28
feet, but um for us, our our kids coming
5:30
nationwide are going to be exposed to a
5:32
taste of LA.
5:33
>> Yeah.
5:34
>> Right? So they're going to get the food,
5:36
the music, mariachi, drum line.
5:39
Um they're going to be exposed to not
5:40
just the best athletes nationwide, but
5:42
they're coming to one of the best cities
5:44
worldwide.
5:45
>> Yeah.
5:45
>> It's a destination um not just a
5:47
destination location, it's a destination
5:48
track meet.
5:49
>> Uh-huh. A destination track meet. And I
5:52
I encourage folks, like especially right
5:54
now in this time and era, to get you,
5:56
you know, poke at your kids a little
5:58
bit, you know, get them out the house,
6:00
get them off the devices, the
6:01
technological devices, you know,
6:04
momentarily. Take them off the video
6:05
games for a second and become the video
6:07
game, right? Come outside and you be the
6:10
action figure. You know, come outside
6:12
and meet new people. One of my favorite
6:15
things about track and field growing up
6:16
in East Oakland was
6:19
each track meet was just in a different
6:20
city. Might have been in the Diablo
6:22
Valley, might have been in Sonoma, may
6:24
have been in Redwood City, may have
6:26
been, you know, in Long Beach. You know,
6:28
we would take car drives to Albuquerque,
6:31
New Mexico and running track meets
6:33
there, up in Or- Oregon, Portland,
6:36
Oregon, you know, at the university we
6:38
ran there. We ran in Philadelphia. And
6:41
so, it wasn't just about the track and
6:43
field, it was about the outreach, right?
6:45
It was about the camaraderie. And track
6:48
and field opened our minds. You know, we
6:50
would think we were king of the world
6:52
until we stepped outside of our box,
6:55
right? And so, I think track and field,
6:58
what I learned in track and field
7:00
transcended into what we do here in
7:02
broadcast media. I was able to adjust
7:06
and adapt to any walk of life, any
7:08
person from any social status. We don't
7:10
hear a lot about that part with track
7:12
and field, Mike. Can you speak to that?
7:13
>> Yeah, it life is hard. And and and track
7:16
is hard.
7:17
>> Yeah.
7:17
>> Those two things go hand in hand, right?
7:19
You got to be able to do that hard work.
7:22
Uh you know, those times. How many How
7:24
many kids have cried at practice? How
7:25
many kids have thrown up at practice?
7:28
That's where you're pushing your body.
7:30
But when you look at the results of what
7:32
we've produced,
7:33
it's no different than what others are
7:35
producing.
7:36
We started in 2014.
7:38
>> Yeah.
7:38
>> We got over
7:39
Actually, we're right at a kids that
7:41
have competed D1
7:44
I got D1 scholarships.
7:45
>> Wow.
7:46
>> 100 kids.
7:47
>> 100 kids, that's huge, right? Okay, they
7:49
got scholarships so the parents are
7:51
saving on money, right? All right.
7:53
>> Now when we look at the academics,
7:56
most of our kids are going to college
7:57
because they stayed within track.
7:59
>> Mhm.
8:00
>> Right? We've produced an Olympian, we
8:02
produced NFL athletes. This is what ends
8:05
up happening when you do the hard work.
8:08
When you sit on that device and you sit
8:09
in a hole when you're not doing what
8:11
you're supposed to be doing, that was my
8:12
life right in the beginning before I got
8:14
into track. All my
8:16
all all my guys, you know, that we grew
8:18
up with, I grew up around 18 kids. I was
8:20
one of 18 in the neighborhood. 17 of
8:22
them are in penitentiary, correctional
8:25
facilities. Okay? Every single one of
8:27
them had some run-in with the law.
8:29
I did not. Why was it? I was out at the
8:32
track all the time.
8:33
>> He was at track practice.
8:34
>> track practice.
8:34
>> was too tired to be a
8:36
>> That's exactly right.
8:37
>> criminal.
8:38
>> [laughter]
8:39
>> Yeah, I was like, man, I can't do that.
8:42
>> He
8:42
>> [laughter]
8:42
>> couldn't. He couldn't. He was too tired.
8:44
He might need his sleep.
8:48
>> [laughter]
8:49
>> Try to run away, I'mma get caught. My
8:50
legs tied.
8:51
>> He got lactic
8:53
acid built up.
8:54
>> and I think that's that that's the hard
8:56
work and the the decision making and and
8:58
I I pride ourselves on it. Our coaches
9:00
understand the vision. It's it's not
9:02
about winning or losing. You can teach a
9:04
kid how to win.
9:05
They're not always going to win.
9:07
>> Yeah.
9:07
>> Okay? They're not always going to win
9:09
and you got to learn that in life.
9:10
You're not always going to win, but that
9:11
doesn't mean you you lost.
9:13
>> Yeah.
9:13
>> That just means you got to get ready and
9:15
continue to compete, continue to train.
9:17
It's a feedback, you know, and and
9:19
that's what it is. I mean, professional
9:20
athletes, there's track athletes that
9:21
are professionals that never won the
9:23
Olympics, never made it to the Olympics,
9:25
but they're professionals.
9:26
>> Yeah.
9:27
>> I have This is for both of you, LaMonica
9:29
and Mike. Thank you again for being
9:30
here. I remember running track in high
9:32
school and a lot of
9:35
the coaches were teachers, you know, um
9:38
and and doing double duty, if you will.
9:40
And a lot of the
9:42
guys would be upset if they didn't make
9:44
the football team or the basketball
9:46
team. The same with the girls, if they
9:48
didn't make the basketball team. And I
9:49
remember the track coaches saying, "Come
9:52
run track. Everybody's not going to make
9:54
the football team and the basketball
9:55
team. Come run track." And a lot of
9:57
those kids were resistant to running
9:59
track because they had their hearts so
10:01
dead set on football or basketball. But,
10:04
don't you kind of feel like it's a good
10:06
warm-up, you know, or a good practice to
10:08
have being out on that track? And maybe
10:11
come back again and try out for football
10:12
or basketball the following year.
10:14
>> Absolutely. You know, we say a lot of
10:16
times, um excuse me, [clears throat] we
10:18
get folks that want to be fast. And we
10:21
tell them, "If you want to be fast in
10:22
football, you need to be track fast
10:24
first." All right. It's a different kind
10:26
of workout. It's a different kind of
10:28
rigor and commitment. But, really to
10:29
speak to what you're talking about,
10:30
Heather, they become part of a
10:32
community. They become a part of a team.
10:35
Right? Sway said it is individual, but
10:37
honestly, it's a collective community.
10:39
And we cheer for each other. We lift
10:40
each other up. We look forward to being
10:42
at the track meet all day Saturday, all
10:43
day Sunday, sharing grapes, you know. It
10:46
really is a is a community. It's a part
10:48
of so many core memories of these kids
10:50
that they may not have made the
10:52
basketball team or the football team,
10:54
but they come back for track. They come
10:56
back every single year because they love
11:00
it.
11:00
>> I love that. LaMonica and Mike are here.
11:03
Um they represent Pacific Coast
11:05
Shockwave. We're going to talk to you
11:08
citizens so you can support this uh
11:11
community event that's taking place
11:13
um July 27th through August 7th. You can
11:15
get August 2nd. You can get your tickets
11:17
at pcshockwaves.org.
11:20
Um if you over 8,000 athletes, is it If
11:24
athletes want to register for the Junior
11:27
Olympics,
11:28
how do they do it?
11:30
>> Yeah, so there's a process for USA Track
11:32
& Field and it is a rigorous process.
11:34
So, um you got to get a USA Track &
11:37
Field membership uh within your
11:39
association. There's 56 associations
11:41
around the country. All 50 states
11:43
participate. Um once you get that um
11:46
USATF membership, you have to compete in
11:49
the what is called the association
11:51
championship. From there, the top eight
11:53
individuals uh to top 12, depending on
11:56
where which which states you're in, will
11:57
then move on to the regional
11:59
championship. Um there's only 15
12:02
regionals uh
12:03
championships. Those typically are going
12:05
to happen at the end of end of June,
12:07
early July. And um the top five
12:10
athletes, only the top five, get to
12:12
qualify to the Junior Olympics.
12:15
So, it is a tough process, right? So,
12:17
you're talking about me going through
12:19
the process, 100% of these kids will
12:21
neck down by the time the regionals
12:23
happens to probably about 95%, right?
12:25
It's it's it's the reality.
12:27
>> But it's worth it, man. I want to
12:30
um I'm going to go to the phone lines.
12:31
If you ran track, you got a kid in
12:33
track, you with a kid in track, you
12:35
worked on a track and field team,
12:37
888-742-3345.
12:40
We're talking about the National Junior
12:42
Olympics Track & Field Championship,
12:43
July 27th at El Cerrito
12:47
at Cerritos College at Cerritos College.
12:50
I'm from the Bay. We got El Cerrito, but
12:52
at Cerritos College. All right, Andrea
12:53
[clears throat] is on the line from
12:54
Mississippi. What up, Andrea?
12:56
>> What up, Andrea?
12:57
>> Hey, how are you?
12:59
>> Andrea, what's up?
13:00
>> Andrea, isn't this exciting? Can you
13:01
hear how excited I am?
13:04
>> Uh yes, sir. And look, I'm kind of
13:06
jealous because I wish we had that
13:08
opportunity when I was in high school.
13:11
>> Yeah, right?
13:13
>> I wish we did. I wish we did. And it's
13:15
very prominent down here in the South.
13:17
They um I'm actually was astounded
13:20
because I tuned in to your station and I
13:22
heard this. And I had been dreading this
13:25
all my years after
13:27
running track in high school that when I
13:30
was chosen to run, I didn't really have
13:32
an outlet.
13:34
Um I had played all the sports there
13:35
were.
13:36
However,
13:38
um track was given to me by one of the
13:40
teachers. She just told me to go out
13:41
there in the field and run. So, I ended
13:43
up doing distance, the 3200, the 1600,
13:46
the 800, the 400, the 4 by 4 meter
13:48
relay, and also the high jump.
13:51
I practiced
13:53
at 5:00 in the morning before school,
13:55
practiced during school, practiced after
13:57
school, conditioned myself, pushed
13:59
myself to beat my time every time at
14:03
every event.
14:04
And even with my competitors, I watched
14:06
their time to beat their time. First,
14:08
second, and third place.
14:10
>> Mhm.
14:10
>> I was there all year round, made it to
14:12
state, placed second.
14:14
Uh
14:15
the support is very important. The
14:17
support, the perseverance, and I also
14:20
heard you say um
14:22
that
14:23
when you're out there, once that gun
14:26
goes off, you're on your own.
14:29
That's the best feeling in the world
14:30
because you're competing against other
14:32
people, but you're also pushing yourself
14:35
to get to that finish line first.
14:38
And even if you're last, as long as you
14:40
cross that line, that's important
14:42
because
14:43
>> Yeah.
14:44
>> there's no losers [applause] in track.
14:46
They're all winners.
14:47
>> Yeah, man.
14:49
Hey Trey, I wish I know you're in
14:50
Mississippi, but you know the event is
14:52
in July, man. If you you make your way
14:55
out, we'll make sure you get a ticket.
14:56
>> Come on out.
14:57
>> At least two tickets.
14:58
>> Yeah, we'll host you.
14:59
>> All right.
15:00
>> We'll host you.
15:01
>> information afterwards because I I would
15:03
love to come out there?
15:05
>> Okay, but you got to get yourself out
15:06
here. That's the only thing.
15:07
>> [laughter]
15:09
>> All right.
15:10
Okay. All right, hold on the line. We're
15:12
going to get
15:12
>> Kalani got you.
15:13
>> We're going to get your information. And
15:15
and listen, we're going to give you a
15:16
T-shirt, the whole nine. All right?
15:18
You're going to Pacific Coast Shockwaves
15:21
going to take good care of you. Hold on
15:22
the line, all right?
15:23
>> Trey. All right. Yeah, she's a citizen.
15:26
Allison is in Inglewood. Allison,
15:28
welcome to the show.
15:29
>> Hey, Allison.
15:31
>> Good morning, Sweet 16.
15:32
>> Yo.
15:33
>> Um yeah, I just want
15:35
A long time listener, first time caller.
15:37
>> We got a first time caller.
15:39
>> First time
15:40
>> Hold on. Hold [screaming] on. Hold on.
15:44
Welcome to the victory stand.
15:48
>> And I just want to say I'm a track and
15:50
field mom. I mean, in high school I was
15:52
a track and field manager, so I could
15:53
get out of class with my friends. But
15:55
now I'm a track and field mom, and I
15:58
just see like the grit, the
16:00
determination, the resilience, and the
16:03
character
16:05
development in my daughter.
16:08
She's a sprinter, so she does the one,
16:10
the two, and the four by one. So, she's
16:12
done the 400 once, and that kind of took
16:14
her out, but I just see when she's
16:16
coming around the curve on the 200 and
16:18
coming down that home stretch, and then
16:20
having to rely on her teammate to pass
16:22
her the baton on the back curve, you
16:24
know? And just seeing them when they
16:25
cross that finish line, cheeks are red,
16:27
sweating, panting, but
16:29
the feel of winning and crossing that
16:31
line and placing. I've just seen the
16:34
development in her, and
16:35
I didn't think she was out for track,
16:37
for running, but she surprised me, and
16:39
she loves it. So, we're going to keep
16:40
doing it. I'm glad to hear there's an
16:42
event. I'm going to try to make it out
16:43
there in July in Cerritos.
16:45
>> Awesome.
16:46
>> Allison, come on, join us. It's going to
16:48
be a good time. It's going to be great
16:49
food there as well. There's going to be
16:51
entertainment. There's going to be
16:53
Olympic athletes there. Some of those
16:55
Olympic athletes are LaMonica that will
16:58
be there.
16:59
Can you name anybody, or is it too soon?
17:01
>> Too soon.
17:01
>> Too soon.
17:02
>> Not yet.
17:03
>> Okay.
17:03
>> What we what we can say is there'll be a
17:05
a few dozen of them. This is LA. This is
17:08
where the majority There's there's a
17:09
there's a lot of Olympians that live
17:11
here, that train here,
17:13
with all the great teams and coaches
17:14
that we have out out in Southern
17:16
California. They're here. So
17:18
>> Yeah.
17:18
I know I know a few of them, so I can't
17:20
say. Ramona gave me that look. I can't
17:22
say who it is, but Allison we would love
17:25
it for you to make it July 27th to
17:27
August 2nd. Go to pcshockwaves.org.
17:30
I want everybody to go to
17:31
pcshockwaves.org.
17:32
Go check it out. You know, decide if you
17:35
want to buy a ticket, but I suggest you
17:37
do. Do it now. Okay?
17:38
>> And congrats to Shockwaves for bringing
17:40
it to LA.
17:41
>> Yay, man. You was super citizen.
17:44
>> That's what I mean in the world, man.
17:45
>> Hey, man. Let me tell you something.
17:46
This is going to be in Southern
17:47
California first time since 2007.
17:51
The ages of the athletes will range from
17:53
anywhere from 7 to 18 years of age.
17:57
There'll be nearly 10,000 athletes that
17:59
are going to participate.
18:02
I got Larry from Indianapolis on the
18:03
line. And you see people calling from
18:05
all over the country right now. He
18:07
actually competed in the Junior Olympics
18:09
before. Larry, welcome to the show, man.
18:11
How you doing, Larry?
18:13
Good morning.
18:13
>> I'm a long time listener, first time
18:15
caller.
18:16
>> First time caller. We got another one.
18:18
Hold up, man.
18:19
>> What up?
18:23
>> Welcome to the relay team, Larry.
18:27
>> Back in 1984, I competed in the Arco
18:29
Jesse Owens uh
18:32
Junior Olympics games.
18:34
>> Oh, [laughter] yeah.
18:35
>> In the high jump.
18:35
>> Where? What city? What city was it in?
18:38
>> Uh
18:39
we competed out of we started in Terre
18:41
Haute, Indiana and only first place for
18:44
only first place
18:45
participants got to go.
18:47
From Terre Haute, we went to Louisville.
18:50
We became on the Louisville team. Only
18:52
first place
18:53
uh finishers got to go and from there we
18:55
went to San Diego State for the finals.
18:58
>> Yeah.
18:58
>> Nice.
18:59
>> Yeah, I remember that. Them days. Yo,
19:01
Larry, can you speak to now that you're
19:03
an adult to parents
19:05
who um
19:06
are looking for, you know, activities to
19:08
put their kids in and how track and
19:11
field has benefited you from a child to
19:13
an adult.
19:15
>> It has benefited me. Today, I'm 55 and
19:17
I'm still working out due to I believe
19:20
the discipline that cross country gave
19:22
me. And from cross country, I went to
19:24
track and field, where I competed in the
19:27
100 m, high jump, long jump. I'm 5'7"
19:30
and I've jumped what, like 6'4" in the
19:32
high jump, 23 ft in the long jump, 10.9
19:34
in the 100 m.
19:36
And I'm still working out today. That
19:38
gives you discipline.
19:41
>> Wow, you had vertical, bro. 5'7" jumping
19:43
6'4".
19:44
>> That's amazing.
19:45
>> spud with
19:47
>> [laughter]
19:48
>> vertical or horizontal? At 5'7", so
19:50
yeah.
19:52
>> Yeah, man. Well, look, if you can make
19:54
it and even if you can, if you could
19:56
support us, go to pcshockwaves.org.
19:58
You can even purchase tickets for other
20:00
people to go who might be in the area.
20:02
We really appreciate it because these
20:04
type of events take communal support. It
20:06
take support of the community and
20:08
families. Um these good folks right here
20:11
doing this, you know,
20:12
out of the love of their heart, you
20:14
know, nobody's getting rich off of this.
20:16
I've I've done a few track and field
20:19
a few track meets and Lord knows you do
20:21
not get rich off of it. Um and so, if
20:24
you could support Larry, we appreciate
20:26
you and we appreciate your call,
20:27
brother, and you're a super citizen,
20:29
man.
20:29
>> That's right. In the morning. Thanks,
20:30
Larry.
20:30
>> All right. I appreciate you taking my
20:31
call. Thanks, guys.
20:33
>> Thank you, man. Lamont said Let me see.
20:37
TJ in Colorado ran from a kid until
20:40
college. Now, he coaches. TJ, welcome to
20:43
the show.
20:45
>> Hey, how y'all doing?
20:47
>> What up, TJ?
20:49
>> Hey.
20:50
Um so, yeah, like I was saying, I I ran
20:53
all the way up through college and
20:55
it was a great time, showed discipline
20:57
and camaraderie with the team.
20:59
Um
21:00
but the the main reason I'm calling is I
21:03
want to make sure parents understand
21:06
that track is not just a secondary
21:08
sport. Um
21:10
>> Yeah, that's right.
21:11
>> As athletes,
21:13
it's it takes a special mindset in track
21:18
to compete at that level, to push your
21:19
body through pain.
21:22
And you know, don't take your kids out
21:25
of track to go put them in basketball
21:27
and such because it's doing them a
21:29
disservice.
21:33
>> Okay. I see Okay. Don't take your
21:36
kids out of track to do basketball. You
21:38
say continue to do both is what you
21:40
saying, T.J.?
21:42
>> Absolutely. But I've seen where during
21:45
track season there's AAU basketball and
21:48
they'll pull the kids from track to go
21:51
to basketball.
21:52
>> Yep. Yep.
21:53
>> And it's just it's not right.
21:56
>> You know, one of the things that it it's
21:58
actually teaching them cuz it is you
22:00
know, all this is a is a is a teaching
22:02
moment and it's teaching them that it's
22:05
okay to not commit.
22:07
And that's what you don't want to teach
22:08
your kids, right? So once it gets hard
22:10
and you know when it gets hard? When
22:12
when like now, when it's time to go
22:14
qualify for Junior Olympics. We'll have
22:16
families that say, you know, I'm going
22:18
to go get ready for football and then
22:20
when they don't get to the championship
22:21
of football, well I'm going to go get
22:22
ready for track or basketball. You're
22:23
always trying to get ready for something
22:25
cuz you can't finish something.
22:26
Right? So you got to teach these kids
22:28
that they got to essentially do
22:30
everything they can to finish.
22:32
And and that's kind of analogous to
22:34
track and field. You got to finish the
22:36
race you started, you got to finish it.
22:38
When you get eliminated, then you're
22:40
done, right? At that point, you got to
22:42
continue to compete and this is one of
22:44
the problems we do see talking about
22:46
secondary sport. Track is is is a
22:48
primary sport for more kids in the
22:50
United States than any other sport.
22:52
>> Yeah.
22:53
>> You go to a high school cross country
22:54
meet, there's 13, 15,000 kids at that.
22:57
It blows you away.
22:59
Right? But we treat it as a secondary
23:01
sport because it's not one of those that
23:03
we watch on on on Saturdays and Sundays.
23:05
>> Mhm.
23:05
>> When we turn on our TV until the
23:07
Olympics.
23:07
>> Right.
23:08
>> Right, or big championship. Everybody
23:10
wants to watch what? Track and field.
23:11
>> Mhm.
23:12
>> Every 4 years. Right?
23:14
>> And so, I think that's that mindset and
23:16
I appreciate that that that you brought
23:17
that up because, you know, we deal with
23:19
this track coaches as well.
23:22
>> There's something about it and to TJ's
23:24
point, there's something about it that
23:25
seems like less less sexy depending on
23:29
where you are. It's like it's like like
23:31
tennis as well. You know, some of like
23:34
the coach said, everybody you're not
23:36
always going to make the basketball or
23:37
the football team. You have track, you
23:39
have tennis. But something about being
23:41
like a football player or a basketball
23:43
player brings a different energy, you
23:46
know, possibly. And maybe it is the
23:47
television. Maybe it is the hopes of
23:50
college basketball, the industry of it
23:51
all and the celebrity that goes along
23:54
with the football players and basketball
23:55
players.
23:56
>> Yeah, and how they market them.
23:57
>> Yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:59
>> Marketers.
24:00
>> Yeah.
24:01
>> It's branding, right? You want to speak
24:03
to that?
24:04
>> Um
24:06
you know, sometimes track and field does
24:08
come off as less sexy.
24:09
>> Mhm.
24:11
>> But talk to runners.
24:13
And you know, they call it runner's
24:14
high.
24:15
>> Mhm.
24:15
>> Because you get something physiological
24:17
physical and also sociological from it.
24:20
You get a team and a community.
24:22
Um and it it it doesn't get a lot of
24:25
airtime until they're those big events
24:27
like coming up to the Junior Olympics or
24:29
coming up to the actual Olympics.
24:31
Um
24:32
And that's probably the narrative that
24:33
we got to change. And I think some of
24:35
that is about money, too.
24:36
>> Yeah.
24:36
>> I think a lot of big donors want to get
24:38
behind some of the the larger
24:40
money-making sports.
24:41
>> Yeah.
24:42
>> Um and we should change that about track
24:43
and field. Professional track and field
24:45
definitely needs to have the big banks
24:47
behind it.
24:48
>> Mhm.
24:48
>> And that's what we're doing now. We're
24:50
starting right now at the USATF National
24:53
Junior Olympics Track and Field
24:54
Championship, July 27th through August
24:57
2nd at Cerritos College. First time in
24:59
19 years has been in Southern California
25:02
courtesy of pcshockwaves.org.
25:05
Go visit them now. We're going to come
25:06
back with a special announcement. I
25:08
understand that they found a host for
25:10
this big event and we're going to find
25:12
out and reveal who that is coming up
25:15
next. Shade45.
25:17
Shade45.
25:20
We're talking to Mike La Monica from
25:21
Pacific Coast Shockwaves organization.
25:25
Go to pcshockwaves.org.
25:28
They are officially promoting the USATF
25:30
National Junior Olympic Track and Field
25:32
Championship July 7th through August the
25:34
2nd.
25:36
And as we said prior to the song
25:39
we got a big announcement to make. Big
25:41
big drum roll, please, Torch.
25:50
Wait wait hold up hold up hold up.
25:53
>> Here we go. So everybody knows that
25:54
Wednesday, July 29th is going to be the
25:57
opening ceremonies at 7:00 p.m. at
25:59
Cerritos College.
26:00
And Swayze IS THE MC.
26:03
>> [screaming and crying]
26:05
[laughter]
26:06
>> TRACY, I DID IT.
26:09
YOU HAVE ARRIVED.
26:10
>> I DID IT.
26:11
>> I WANT to I want to thank you first of
26:13
all thank you Mike La Monica.
26:16
Uh
26:17
I hadn't even prepared a speech for this
26:18
one.
26:20
But I want to shout out my brother T
26:21
Calloway from Top Speed Athletics. You
26:24
know that's who you doing. You hire me,
26:25
you hiring us. Um Top Speed Athletics
26:28
for all the work we've been doing. My
26:30
man KT from Five North Track Club.
26:33
You know um and uh guy guys thank you. I
26:36
I accept. Thank you. I appreciate it,
26:39
yo. So that's more the reason to come
26:41
out
26:41
>> That's right.
26:42
>> and support this big event July 27th
26:44
through August 2nd. What day am I MCing?
26:47
>> July 29th,
26:48
Wednesday. Wednesday.
26:50
>> Now normally when I MC I I
26:52
there with me guys. So I don't know.
26:55
>> I got something to do.
26:56
>> I just
26:57
>> [laughter]
26:58
>> Don't even.
26:59
Michael LaMonica has nothing to do with
27:01
you.
27:03
This one right here
27:04
>> You got something to do
27:05
>> I got something to do with Sway. You are
27:07
not about to have me working [laughter]
27:09
on No. Y'all don't understand. I'm sure
27:13
there's a female out there in the
27:15
universe
27:16
who is way more decorated than my high
27:18
school [laughter] track record. I'M SURE
27:21
>> TRACK RUNNER, MAN.
27:22
>> [clears throat]
27:22
>> I I know. I I used to run track in high
27:25
school.
27:26
>> Okay, me too.
27:28
We all did.
27:29
>> You You You mentioned college. Mine
27:31
stopped at I was started rapping once I
27:33
I went to college. [laughter]
27:35
Yeah, find another female. I'm sure
27:36
between this collective right here y'all
27:38
y'all can find somebody with medals,
27:40
real medals, not Sway medals.
27:42
>> making that announcement soon, too.
27:43
>> Yeah, man.
27:44
>> Oh, you got a female?
27:46
>> Uh we're we're waiting for her to make
27:48
the announcement.
27:49
>> Yeah.
27:49
>> Oh, wow.
27:50
>> Maybe she can make that announcement
27:51
here on the show.
27:52
>> If you guys will invite her on air, we'd
27:54
love to have her come out.
27:55
>> love to invite her. I can't allude I
27:58
can't give any information on who it is.
28:01
>> Not yet.
28:02
>> But easily one of the most recognizable
28:05
names in Olympic history.
28:07
>> Oh, wow.
28:08
>> Because she's made Olympic history.
28:10
>> Okay.
28:11
>> Is that that's good?
28:13
I don't want to say too much.
28:15
All right, and I've been a big fan of
28:16
hers
28:17
>> Us, too.
28:18
>> for a long time and I'm looking forward
28:21
to meeting her and you know, doing
28:24
whatever I can to bring attention to
28:25
this amazing event. What does it feel
28:27
like for you all, man? Like when they we
28:30
we got familiar with each other back in
28:32
1990, right? When they came up to go to
28:35
college at UC Berkeley was the same year
28:37
King Tech and I started radio
28:40
on KMYL in the Bay Area. And so they
28:43
they were able to listen to the
28:45
world-famous Wake Up Show on Friday
28:47
nights and set their cassette decks to
28:50
tape and record and learn about all kind
28:52
of hip-hop culture, music, um music
28:55
>> college.
28:56
>> Got you through college, right? Ain't
28:58
that something? And we didn't know we
29:00
met through this.
29:01
>> That's right.
29:01
>> Right? So salute, you know, salute to
29:04
our KT for
29:05
uh bringing us all together. Who was it?
29:07
KT and
29:08
and Billy?
29:09
>> KT, Billy Potts from 10 East.
29:10
>> Uh-huh. Billy Potts, man. Billy Potts
29:13
Huh?
29:13
>> Good people.
29:14
>> Good people. Billy Potts from 10 East is
29:16
man, he's a juggernaut in this track and
29:18
field thing. KT from 5 North, these
29:21
young these men are juggernauts in this
29:24
They love your children.
29:26
>> That's right.
29:26
>> They care about the kids, man.
29:28
They really are transforming lives with
29:30
10 East and 5 North. They are
29:32
transforming lives of your kids.
29:36
Sometimes we don't know what's going on
29:37
with our kids and we might not be able
29:39
to get in sync. All we can do is support
29:41
them. And they got to kind of go out and
29:43
experience world on their experience the
29:45
world on their own. Track and field is
29:47
one of those safe spaces you could put
29:49
your kid in and they're going to learn
29:51
skill sets. They're going to learn
29:52
They're going to learn mental fortitude.
29:55
They're going to learn things that your
29:56
kids will come back to the home and then
29:58
they'll be more evolved than they were
30:00
prior to it. I've watched Billy and KT
30:03
personally, you know, just deal with
30:05
these kids and I'm like, "Wow." Me and T
30:08
Calloway, you know, my brother's the
30:09
same way. He loves the youth. You know,
30:12
that's one of the reasons why we started
30:14
Top Speed Athletics to get involved and
30:16
to give back. Salute to you all.
30:19
>> You mentioned hundreds of kids.
30:21
Y'all have kids?
30:23
>> We got it We got three.
30:24
>> Okay, [laughter]
30:25
you know
30:25
>> We have three.
30:26
>> And so when you got kids at home, it's
30:28
even, you know, more outstanding that
30:31
you're taking care of hundreds of kids
30:33
that's in your community. So I want to
30:35
say salute to you all.
30:37
>> Appreciate that.
30:37
>> And you know, we we probably can't get
30:39
home if we don't mention our kids on the
30:41
show.
30:41
>> Say them, man. Shout them out.
30:43
>> So, let me just tell the story before we
30:44
get to that, but
30:45
>> [laughter]
30:45
>> um you know, when your kids are going
30:47
just like the kids you know, the parents
30:49
these days, they want to put them in all
30:50
these different sports. So, we were in
30:51
volleyball, baseball, this, that.
30:53
>> Aquatics.
30:54
>> And aquatics. I said, "Listen, this is
30:56
getting too hard.
30:57
Mom and Dad did track.
30:59
All three of you doing track. Pick a
31:01
Pick an event."
31:02
And and all three of them uh found their
31:05
found their way. Um they were all
31:07
different and at the end of the day, all
31:09
three of them found their pathway. All
31:12
three were different and they all
31:14
competed in D1. Uh went to college and
31:16
everything. And so, they um you know,
31:19
they're they're they're real big
31:20
supporters of us.
31:21
>> Yeah.
31:21
>> Uh they know what the track the sport
31:23
has done. They work behind the scenes.
31:25
So, we're not doing it just ourselves.
31:26
We got a team and they're part of that
31:28
team. Um and so, um they're they're
31:31
they're wonderful kids. So, right now we
31:32
got, you know, one in med school, one in
31:34
law school, and then one working on Wall
31:35
Street. So,
31:36
>> Whoa.
31:37
>> that's where we are. So, this is what it
31:39
it should do.
31:40
>> Yeah.
31:41
>> Talking track and field.
31:42
>> You got to say Sochi was a thrower.
31:44
>> Yeah, she was a thrower.
31:45
>> Armando, who is an Alpha and he's in law
31:48
school at Howard,
31:48
>> Uh-huh.
31:49
>> ran the 800. And our youngest, Maya,
31:51
who's working on Wall Street, was a
31:53
hurdler. Really an 800-meter hurdler.
31:55
>> Well, 400-meter hurdles and she became a
31:58
sprinter. She was multi, so she was just
32:00
a lot of stuff. So,
32:01
>> And so, they we we are a track family.
32:03
Sway and Heather B. We are a track
32:05
family.
32:06
>> Wow.
32:07
>> That's amazing. Tracy's in New York.
32:08
Tracy, go ahead and chime in.
32:10
>> Yeah, no, this is great timing. Hey,
32:11
Lavonica, what's up, Mike? I love that
32:14
we've been having this conversation
32:15
about the the stack of skill sets that
32:18
one gains when they are in track and
32:20
field. Um the benefits to your social
32:22
life. And what y'all are really talking
32:24
about right now is I feel like track and
32:26
field, there's a romantic edge that you
32:28
also gain.
32:29
>> Absolutely. [laughter and gasps]
32:30
>> Because we all know about the film Love
32:32
& Basketball, but y'all could have the
32:33
film Love in the 800-meter race.
32:36
>> [laughter]
32:37
>> Could you guys speak about how you met?
32:42
>> Wow.
32:43
There's two connections there. I'll just
32:45
tell you this. So, I can say this. 1986,
32:48
we met at a track meet.
32:49
>> Okay.
32:50
>> track meet in in
32:52
and in that year, we went into Diablo
32:54
Valley College for the California State
32:57
Meet for the youth. That's back in in
32:59
his neighborhood, right?
33:01
And
33:02
and since then, we've been together for
33:04
40 years.
33:05
>> Wow.
33:06
>> It's been 40 years.
33:07
>> Wow. Congratulations.
33:08
>> So, so we actually met at an LA Jets
33:11
meet.
33:12
>> Yes.
33:12
>> And they just had their 40th anniversary
33:14
as we had our first 40 our 40th
33:17
anniversary as well.
33:19
Track Don't say that. Track brought us
33:21
together.
33:22
>> LA Jets boy. Wow, I remember that name.
33:25
That's still around? So, track can feel
33:27
like Tracy said, love and track can
33:29
feel.
33:30
>> [laughter]
33:32
>> That's crazy, man.
33:34
>> It's been good to us.
33:35
>> That's amazing. Really happy for you
33:37
all. We got Wesley on the line real
33:39
quick. He wanted to He wanted to speak
33:41
up. Wesley, say what up to the team.
33:43
>> Hey, what's going on, uh, citizens? Not
33:46
my first time calling, but uh, I
33:47
appreciate y'all having me on.
33:50
Uh, Coach Mike, Miss LaMonica
33:53
Hey, I love y'all like family. I I
33:55
appreciate everything y'all do for me.
33:58
Yeah, I'm I'm the coach in Rancho for
34:01
Tip Top Track.
34:02
>> I love that.
34:03
>> Wow.
34:05
Wow, man. You tune in to us, bro?
34:08
>> Oh, absolutely. Look, I've been a I've
34:10
been a listener since 2015 all day long.
34:12
It's not my first time calling. I've
34:14
called Reggie like four times.
34:16
>> 11 years, homie.
34:18
>> You a super DUPER CITIZEN.
34:22
DUPER STATUS, DOG. [laughter]
34:23
How many people got the duper status?
34:26
Wow, man.
34:28
>> Absolutely. I just
34:30
Oh, go ahead. Go ahead, Sway.
34:32
>> No, I'm just looking forward to seeing
34:33
you at the track meet and you you know,
34:35
if you tune into this show that long,
34:36
you know, you I spend a lot of time
34:38
talking track and field and the benefits
34:40
of it.
34:41
>> Yeah.
34:41
>> And
34:42
and so so I'm really proud that my
34:44
brother and I got involved with these
34:46
things and and and that we'll be a part
34:48
of this Junior Olympics. You know,
34:50
that's something we thrived to, you
34:52
know, compete at, you know, as youth.
34:55
You know, and so to be a part of it this
34:56
way, man, comes full circle. Coach
34:58
Wesley, man, I'll see you out. I'll see
35:00
you at Cerritos, all right?
35:02
>> be there.
35:02
>> Yes, sir. You'll see me. I'll be loud
35:04
and proud. Shockwave, let's go.
35:05
>> [laughter]
35:06
>> You're a super citizen, man.
35:08
We'll get you Dell real quick. Keep him
35:10
on hold. He's in Atlanta. Go ahead, you
35:11
Dell. Talk to us.
35:12
>> Hey, Dell.
35:14
>> Hey, good morning. Good afternoon,
35:15
everyone. First time caller, long time
35:18
listener.
35:19
>> We got another one. We got another one.
35:24
>> Welcome to the finish line.
35:27
>> Appreciate it.
35:29
Yeah, I'm currently on the clock right
35:30
now headed into work, but I did want to
35:31
call.
35:32
We have met and seen Shockwave a lot
35:35
because my daughter's a two-time
35:38
national champion in shot put. She won
35:39
in 2011
35:41
and 20 4
35:44
2024.
35:46
>> What's her name?
35:48
>> Kennedy Cason.
35:51
>> Kennedy Cason.
35:52
>> Kennedy Cason.
35:52
>> Okay.
35:53
>> Yeah.
35:54
Yeah, and so
35:55
she did work with some people. She
35:57
competed with some of the athletes out
35:59
there competing with Shockwave. Her name
36:00
was
36:01
Jorinde van Klinken. So, they
36:03
>> Oh, yeah.
36:03
>> Yep.
36:04
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah.
36:05
>> Yeah.
36:05
>> Yeah, we just talked We just talked to
36:07
Jorinde a couple of days ago.
36:08
>> Yes.
36:09
>> She's coming back.
36:10
>> She'll be She's been
36:13
Yeah, so the stuff that they were
36:14
talking about, which I was talking about
36:15
in terms of it's a commodity, you know,
36:17
even from different teams, you see a
36:19
group of
36:21
students or athletes that you know
36:22
you're going to compete with all the
36:23
time. So, you always encourage everyone
36:26
to do better than the other. So, it's
36:27
it's a real family thing. She's been
36:29
doing it since she was seven, so Lord
36:31
willing, you know, she's getting over
36:32
her shoulder injury, but uh we should be
36:34
out there in three years as well. We
36:35
making plans.
36:37
>> Awesome. Awesome.
36:38
>> Man, man, well, good good when we when
36:40
you come out there, look for me. I'll be
36:41
one of the people on the microphone.
36:44
>> [snorts]
36:44
>> No, don't try to get back on the field,
36:46
Sway.
36:48
>> [laughter]
36:48
>> Huh? Look for me or Heather. Look for me
36:51
and Heather.
36:53
All right. All right, man. Appreciate
36:55
you, man. Hey, you're a super citizen.
36:57
>> A Sway in the morning.
36:57
>> Yeah, listen, I want to thank you guys
36:59
for coming up today. This is a big deal,
37:01
citizens, Southern California, uh United
37:05
States, worldwide, man. Like, if you
37:06
want to compete in this event, man, it's
37:09
possible. The USATF National Junior
37:11
Olympic Track and Field Championship
37:13
taking place July 27th through August
37:16
2nd. Go to pcshockwaves.org.
37:20
And then also there's a there's a
37:21
challenge you guys are doing on social
37:23
media, right? What is this?
37:25
>> Yes.
37:25
>> What is this challenge that's going on?
37:27
>> Challenge accepted. It's called the
37:29
running man challenge.
37:30
>> The running man challenge.
37:31
>> So, it's a nationwide challenge put out
37:33
to all track enthusiasts, moms, dads,
37:36
coaches, referees, all all of the above.
37:38
Uh record yourself doing the running
37:40
man.
37:42
And then tag us, challenge accepted. If
37:45
you and your team have the most likes,
37:48
looks in the running man challenge, you
37:51
may be out here in Los Angeles competing
37:54
against other running man challengers.
37:56
>> So, you could win you could oh,
37:58
competing against
37:59
>> flying you out here.
38:01
Yeah, we're not flying you out here. You
38:02
got to be out here. However, there'll be
38:04
teams nationwide, so guys, if you
38:06
coming, get on social media, videotape
38:10
yourself doing the running man, and then
38:13
uh tag us, challenge accepted. And based
38:15
on that, we're going to pick the most
38:17
looks and the most likes.
38:19
>> Okay, I should join that.
38:20
>> No, no, no.
38:22
>> I'm going to go ahead and do it.
38:23
>> the last time you did the running man,
38:24
Sway? Keep it a hundred.
38:26
>> One hundred?
38:27
>> Yeah.
38:27
>> Maybe
38:29
89?
38:30
>> [laughter]
38:32
>> MAYBE.
38:34
>> WELL, SWAY, you you got to you got to
38:36
post your running man challenge
38:39
at [laughter] PC Shockwaves.
38:41
>> At PC Shockwaves.
38:43
>> Shock- at PC Shockwaves.
38:44
>> Okay. Make sure you add PC
38:46
@PCShockwaves.
38:49
Do the running man challenge. Uh you put
38:51
the hashtag What is it?
38:52
>> We run CA.
38:54
>> We run CA for California. #werunca
38:58
PC Shock- @PCShockwaves.
39:01
I'll get it down. The best running man
39:03
doer ever in the history of the running
39:05
man is from Oakland.
39:06
>> That's right.
39:08
MC Hammer time.
39:09
>> There you go. Nobody could beat Hammer
39:11
at the running man. And he's from
39:12
Oakland. Who?
39:14
>> I'm just asking.
39:14
>> Who?
39:15
>> Uh-uh. Is there ultimate running man
39:16
song? What's the What song you go to for
39:18
the running man?
39:20
I don't remember Hammer doing the
39:21
running man.
39:22
>> Let's get it started.
39:23
>> Let's get it started. Yeah, let's get it
39:25
started. Let's get it started. That's
39:26
it.
39:27
>> But
39:28
Sway, I do want to talk a little bit
39:29
about volunteers if that's okay.
39:31
>> Okay. Let's do it.
39:32
>> Absolutely.
39:32
>> Cuz you know I was about to rap. So get
39:34
that in. Okay. Go for it.
39:36
>> Please hold just one second. Yes. Um
39:38
uh many hands make light work.
39:41
And it it takes more than just Mike and
39:44
myself and the and the awesome
39:45
volunteers from PC Shockwaves to to host
39:48
an event of this magnitude. And so we're
39:50
taking volunteers all over the nation.
39:53
Volunteers, excuse me,
39:55
39:58
40:02
>> volunteering,
