The “Hip Hop Monk” Speaks: A Conversation with Shifu Shi Yan Ming | SWAY’S UNIVERSE
Apr 24, 2023
Imagine meeting a monk who is responsible for bringing Kung Fu to the West, and for mentoring influential figures like the WuTang Clan’s RZA. Sounds like a fictional character from a martial arts movie, right? But this is the real story of Shifu Shi Yan Ming, a monk who visited Sway In The Morning to talk about his life as a Shaolin Warrior Monk and the prevalent issue of anti-Asian hate crimes.
Shifu Shi Yan Ming never planned on becoming a hip hop icon, but his connection to the WuTang Clan and RZA made him somewhat of a cultural phenomenon. In the interview with Sway, he explained that his relationship with them was organic and purely based on the exchange of knowledge.
Being a victim of racism and prejudice, Shifu Shi Yan Ming shared his thoughts on how Americans can best fight against the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes. According to him, the solution lies in understanding different cultures and creating a sense of empathy. His advice to people who encounter discrimination is to stand up and speak up because “Your voice is your weapon.” He adamantly believes that through love, compassion, and understanding, we can eliminate the present hate and prejudice in our world.
Most people who see Shifu Shi Yan Ming’s accomplishments might think he has superpowers. But, he says that his abilities are the byproduct of his training as a Shaolin Warrior Monk. He shared how his training from an early age has made his resilience almost supernatural. He believes that everyone is capable of developing their strength, which they can use to overcome any obstacle.
Shifu Shi Yan Ming founded the USA Shaolin Temple with the aim of sharing the knowledge of Shaolin Kung Fu with the people of the West. His message to his students and followers is that it’s crucial to learn and understand the culture of Kung Fu before practicing it. Kung Fu is about discipline, dedication, and hard work, and Shifu Shi Yan Ming believes that through practicing it, we can cultivate the virtue of patience.
Shifu Shi Yan Ming's childhood was far from comfortable. He grew up in extreme poverty, and he was on the brink of death from sickness. However, he believes that life is a teacher and that every experience prepares us for the future. Through his time in the monastery, he learned the value of meditation, hard work, and perseverance, which taught him how to overcome any obstacle in his life.
Shifu Shi Yan Ming’s conversation with Sway In The Morning was an inspirational experience that touched on many aspects of life, from the importance of empathy to the practice of Kung Fu. He emphasized that the road to becoming strong physically and mentally isn't easy, and it takes a lifetime of dedication and hard work. His achievements and accomplishments are a testament to the power of perseverance, and they serve as a reminder that, with the right mindset, we’re all capable of having great strength.

Let me tell you about this special spirited man, Shi Yan Ming
0:06
Shifu Shi Yan Ming is a man who is a world-renowned 34th generation Shaolin warrior monk
0:16
that I met in the 90s with my partner, King Tech. This man is responsible for a lot of the legendary folks that could come out of our culture
0:25
like RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan. Give that man a big round of applause
0:29
He trained with our guest today. Bokeem Woodbine, good friend of ours
0:34
He's been on the show. Wesley Snipes, good friend of ours. He's been on the show
0:37
Rosie Perez and many more. Xi'an Ming defected to the United States in the early 90s from communist China, right
0:48
And I believe his mission was to spread the philosophies of Shaolin and Shaolin martial arts around the world
0:57
I got a chance to meet him and immediately wanted to have him demonstrate some of the phenomenal things that he's been able to do with his mind and his physicality
1:08
One of the things that made him popular is demonstrating the one inch punch where he's able to generate, I want to say through chi and different energy, enough power from that one inch punch to devour a human being
1:22
One of the things we wanted to watch him do is because he's probably about my height or maybe an inch or two short
1:27
I'm not sure. But we wanted to see him run up a 10-foot wall and see if he could kick an item 10 foot high in the air
1:35
And we watched him do it. This is not like the movies you watched on Friday night in Chinese martial arts theaters
1:44
This is the actual thing. And when we met him, this man did not speak a word of English
1:50
and now he can speak in 10 different languages, if I'm not mistaken
1:56
Yes, this is true. All right, so I want to welcome him to the show
2:00
I'm not even doing justice in introducing who he is. He's a phenomenal human being
2:06
We've had a chance to hang out here in New York as well on the West Coast
2:09
Rizzo dropped him off to me in Keene Tech once and said do something with him
2:13
So we tried to find him jobs working with Billy Blanks and all sorts of people
2:17
And I also came to the temple, which my coworkers don't believe
2:21
But he's going to show you and tell you that this is true. Please welcome him to the show, the one and only Shifu, Shiyamin, ladies and gentlemen
2:30
Yo, how you doing, brother? I'm doing fantastic. Good morning. I'm talking to you
2:36
Come on, man. Come on, man. Peace. Man. Get up on that mic real quick
2:41
And then you brought a guest with you. Kirby, the manager of the USA is on time
2:47
Okay. Kirby, how you doing? I'm doing great. Thank you so much for having us on the show
2:52
And you're from the Bay Area. Yes. I'm born and raised in San Francisco
2:56
We got Yairi up in here. Yairi. Okay. Okay. Yee, yee. Kirby knows what it is
3:05
So for Asian American Pacific Island Heritage Month, the USA Shaolin Temple will be offering
3:11
free children's Shaolin martial arts classes and public charter schools in a New York and New Jersey
3:17
local area. This is true, right? Yes, yes. We want to give back to the community. Shaolin and Wu-Tang
3:23
are for the children. So if you are a public school teacher in the local area, reach out to us
3:28
and your field trip is fully comped and we'll teach you history, philosophy, as well as action
3:34
meditation of Shaolin martial arts to help spread positive impact to our future generations. I love
3:40
it man wow will this apply to the high schools as well or just um elementary school all schools
3:46
so elementary middle high as long as you're a public or charter school um we will be opening
3:52
our doors to you so public school teachers reach out to us usashallintemple on all social medias
3:59
or usashallintemple.org that's u-s-a-s-h-a-o-l-i-n temple.org okay man shifu let me ask you this
4:10
you defected in the early 90s, right? You guys were doing a showcase in New York City
4:16
or how did it happen, and why did you defect? The showcase, why I defected, back to 1992
4:23
The first ever show-and-topped monks being invited to the United States to perform
4:30
After performing, I decided to stay in the United States. And that's why I chose New York City as the capital of the world. Okay
4:41
If I can spread the Chinese martial arts or Shantanpa martial arts or Shantanpa philosophy in New York City, basically to the world
4:51
Mm-hmm. Yeah. So, but, I mean, to the fact, how did the Shaolin temple react to that
4:57
Did they feel like they were betrayed, or did the country feel betrayed, and how did you deal with that
5:03
They felt it. And some monks, they love it. Some amongst the discreet
5:11
And also, that time, the Chinese government was on the tour. For example, the chairman of the World of Martial Arts was on the tour
5:23
He was the lead. And then after performing in the West Coast
5:29
last place was in San Francisco. After performing, I decided, you know what
5:34
This is my world. This is my place. I should stay here
5:40
Yeah. Yeah, to spread, to share that Sean Temple philosophy or martial arts
5:45
to the Western world. Yeah. And so you came to the Bay Area, through New York
5:51
and then you landed in the Bay Area. And then Oakland was the first place you really set roots in
5:59
Why Oakland? That time I just walked out of the hotel, absolutely no English
6:05
I just jumped in the cab. I just used my action language pointed
6:10
I said go keep going just keep going and we couldn't communicate
6:16
with each other because the text driver spoke to me in English I have no idea
6:21
what he said he said I just keep pointing this guy drove me to Auckland
6:28
was looking for you man there it is that's what he was looking
6:32
for you you know what I'm saying yo yeah yeah But the irony is that's where Bruce Lee first set up his shop was in Oakland when he came to the States, right
6:45
Did you know that? I know that. Yes. Bruce Lee, I respect him so much
6:50
He's a legend. If he wasn't a martial arts legend, he would be a philosopher
6:59
Reading his book, watching his movie, film, he spoke to the world, his philosophy
7:06
His knowledge. Yeah, I gave so much respect. And he gave you inspiration, right? Absolutely
7:11
What was it like for you growing up as a kid? Because what I see is, you know, I see the movies
7:17
you know, and I see how it's portrayed growing up as a Shaolin monk and a lot of training
7:22
a lot of meditation. I don know if it was a lot of fun you know but what was it like Can you describe what it was like growing up as a kid Well you know growing up like a kid like you know normal
7:35
Because I was born in China, everything to me is not like people thinking
7:41
Yeah. Enter the temple, watch everything, interesting. The statues, some old people
7:51
They say, oh, do like this. I say, okay, do like this. But in China, the masters, most of the time, they do not talk to you
7:59
They didn't talk to me. Most of the time, just use the action. For example, handstands
8:05
You feel your eyeball almost pop out because they, you know, upside down, long time
8:13
The masters just walk away. But they, you don't know how long they come back
8:21
They just lay upside down handstands or splits. They do not talk to you, just push
8:28
It's action to push you. Was it difficult? Like, was it hard
8:35
You knew why you were doing it? You know, I just do it. I just did it
8:40
I love it. And master said, do it. I said, okay, no problem. That's what made me today
8:46
Were you one of the best of the kids at it? Or were you just a regular kid at it
8:52
You know what I mean? Were everybody the same skill set, or were you one of the top in skill sets
8:57
I was genius. I was genius. Come on. Talk your shit. I said shit
9:03
I was genius. I was genius. So some of those things, go ahead
9:08
Good, bad, ugly, everything together. Yes. Yeah. Master said, don't do this
9:14
Sometimes he said, you know. Master said, go to the left. I went through the red
9:21
And I went up and I went down. That's why I said good, bad, ugly at the same time
9:27
Yeah. Oh, man. Shi Yan Ming is joining us right now, and we're celebrating Asian American Pacific Island Heritage Month
9:35
USA Shaolin Temple, that's where you go, and they're offering classes for grade school kids as well as high school kids
9:43
How did you meet RZA? I met Riza back to 1995 Okay
9:49
At Jiza A genius You know what I'm saying An album release Okay
9:55
At that time he was looking for me He heard the Sean Temple monk
9:59
Who's in New York City And started the U.S. Sean Temple He was looking for me
10:04
You know unfortunately He was at the temple I went out At that moment Yeah
10:13
And later on, you know, blessing. The Destiny brothers brought us together when Jesus released his album
10:23
I was there. He was there. He spoke to me English. I spoke to him blah, blah, blah, Mandarin, Chinese
10:31
But we understood each other. Somehow we communicated. Wow. Yeah, just like that
10:37
Yeah. I understood him. He understood me. And that's how it worked
10:42
And Sophia Chang was very involved with the hip hop culture. And what role did she play in making that happen
10:49
You know what I'm saying? I appreciate her. Yes. You know, she like a bridge
10:54
Me and Wu-Tang Clan at that time. Yeah. I remember this. You remember when I came to the temple, Shifu
11:00
You know, they don't believe I was at the temple. I put this man right here
11:05
His picture on the wall at the temple. One day you check out
11:09
But what level was he? Because there's like low. That's not important
11:14
That's not important. I'm serious. Matt Hero. Matt Atcom right here. Right there
11:20
Absolutely, yes. Can you explain to us, as Sway mentioned earlier, growing up here in the States, we only got to see a lot of movies and really didn't understand
11:29
You know, if you were bad or if you wanted an extra activity, your mom might put you in karate school or something
11:36
But we didn't really understand the history. What is the significance or the difference between, let's say, a Bruce Lee, who you said could have been a philosopher, and a Jackie Chan, who we've had here
11:47
Do they have the same skill set, the same master level? Is it the same
11:53
In the States, wherever you put your kids, in karate, taekwondo, BJJ, kung fu, all good
12:02
Discipline is the most important thing in our lives. Take discipline. you have to discipline yourself without discipline yourself you cannot move forward
12:11
yes for example you're tired you didn't want to get up the bed you had to get up go to school
12:17
you had to get up to go to work yeah blue three was fantastic jackson is excellent of them
12:25
at that show with jackie and beijing who team back to 1999 in hawaii who was phenomenal
12:33
truly martial arts. Wow. Yeah. Did y'all spar at all? Fighting and performing
12:41
is totally different. Okay. Totally different. You perform it, it looks fantastic, doesn't mean you can fight
12:46
You fight, you can fight, doesn't mean you can perform it. And some people
12:52
practice martial arts for 50, 60 years, doesn't mean you can fight
12:57
Some people never practice martial arts. Walk on the street, they can fight
13:01
Yeah. Totally depends. What about you? You a fighter or a performer
13:06
I'm both. Genius. I'm both. Let me see. Okay. I'm both. Wow, man
13:12
Dang, man. I'm both, baby. You look like a rubber doll right there, man. I'm both
13:16
Me too. I'm both. Man, Suede, don't break your pants. I'm both
13:21
Look at this one. You're going to be both, too. Okay. All right. Go ahead, Heather. You both
13:25
Hell no. Okay. I stay in my lane. Leg up, wave. Trying to fart on the radio. No
13:31
Speaking of fighting, I'm just curious. I've always been wondering about people who are masters at this type of level of martial arts
13:43
Have you ever been attacked where you've actually had to use this in real-life applications
13:49
Not in the studio, not in a temple, but in a street, in a venue where you've been attacked and you've had to use it
13:57
I have been attacked in China. But I looking for a fight
14:03
But luckily in the United States, nobody. I walk on the street at night
14:08
You know, sometimes, you know, for example, step out. In the 90s. And, you know, after a party with Riza, Wu-Tang Clan, you know, my boys
14:17
I walk on the street, nobody. Step on the subway, nobody. But during the COVID time, a couple of times, they say, oh, virus
14:27
I said, man, say it one more time. Let me hear it
14:34
Speak one more time. I said, yo, brothers, this is incorrect. Disrespect, you know what I mean
14:42
We're human. We should respect each other. Yeah. Love each other. I hope each other to grow
14:49
That's the way it is. You know what I mean? So you felt it in the community when there was a lot of backlash on people who were of Asian descent that you got a lot of discrimination during the COVID time Right time Right That why a couple of times she was with me a couple of times
15:05
I stopped. I said, speak one time, let me hear. And some people immediately said, oh, we apologize
15:14
I said, it's okay. Respect each other and love each other. Hope each other to grow
15:21
That's the way to go. Instead, use the energy. The time to against each other, that's incorrect
15:29
We should make some corrections to help other people, let them realize how to respect themselves, how to respect others
15:37
I love it, man. Asiya and Ming is here. Shifu, I call him
15:41
You know, Kirby's here as well. DB, you want to jump in? Of course. You know, there's like Heather touched on, you know, we watch a lot of movies
15:47
There's a lot of myths and rumors and like, oh, they can do everything. They can walk on air and all this stuff like that
15:52
and the dim mock and the death touch and that sort of thing. So can you dispel, you two, Kirby
15:57
between the myths and what is real of Shaolin monks? The real Shaolin monks, not like people thinking
16:06
Not everybody practice my shards. You wear rope, you shave your head, doesn't mean you're a monk
16:14
A lot of people don't understand that. The monk, you can be a monk
16:19
My man right here, so I can be a monk. that people homeless can be a monk
16:23
Monk means to spread peace, harmonies, love, respect, courage, compliment to others
16:33
That's what monk means. You have high level, high understanding about life, about human
16:39
That's what it is. So the rumors, what are the ones you want them to dispel
16:45
Well, the Denmark, that's a huge one. Everybody brings that up. Is it actually doable, or is there a different version
16:50
of it that doesn't have such severe circumstances at the end. Explain what it is, too
16:55
I can explain to you. Denmark, most of the time, jokes. That's been real
17:01
Earlier, as I said, punch your face, punch your head, kick your head
17:06
knock it out. That's real. Use the hand, slap your fist. You feel pain. That's real
17:12
Look at each other. And that's real. Most of the time, just for the entertainment
17:18
and looks good, sounds good. You know, people love it. I bring them to the joy and to the happiness
17:28
and for watching, of course. So Kirby, is it, if I can't, with the Denmark
17:33
I should be able to just lift my hand and throw you back at the wall, is that
17:38
No, no, that's definitely not possible. I think a lot of that is mystified in like the movies
17:44
and what people are trying to chase to do, But the real battle of martial arts is a battle against yourself
17:51
And the skills that you gain in training is what's going to take you through the journey of life
17:56
And so sharpening yourself and the battle against yourself and sort of like elevating your mental, physical and spiritual levels is really the hardest part
18:05
Everything else is just performative. Everything else is just performative. And I think Shifu is being really humble here, but he's literally the OG Shaolin Warrior monk
18:14
And I think especially in the age of like social media where like views and impressions really matter, a lot of this can be like seen as like performative
18:23
But living it every single day, maintenance, consistency, discipline is really like the jewels of what this is
18:31
OK, I remember I want to say I saw it on the show
18:36
You were laying on the bed of nails. You had a concrete slab smashed on your chest
18:42
Right. That was real. That was real. Okay. Yeah. Basically, you lie down the bayonet and the stone on my chest
18:54
Somebody just hammered, hitting. But to me, that's a very easy way to do it
19:01
Because many years I practiced, easy. But the hardest is how to stretch your body, how to stretch your mind
19:10
Keep the flexibilities. that's why people are getting the same age feel old
19:16
because you keep losing your flexibilities you're not maintaining you're not keeping
19:21
that's why flexibility goes away for many years you know that's why people
19:26
are getting the same age I'm old you're not old believe it
19:29
you gotta believe it you gotta believe it just keep exercise your life
19:34
keep challenging yourself discipline yourself exercise the most important thing in our lives exercise
19:41
Heather and I are doing what we call a Metflex challenge right now where we're in the process of improving our diets
19:47
and lowering our weight and exercising, right? Yes, we had hot chocolate this morning, though
19:52
It's still right there, Abbott. Come by the temple. She'll make sure you lose weight
19:58
Come on, man. It's here in New York. It's here in New York
20:02
Yeah, 102 Allen Street. I'm going to come by. I want to check it out
20:05
I had a question for you, Kirby. Actually, two questions. One, can a female be a monk
20:09
And two, do you think it's important for females to participate in martial art, even if it's for, I hate to say it for self-defense purposes
20:18
Somebody might see you in your size and feel like she's easy. I can attack her, a man
20:23
But you have been trained in discipline. So do you think it's important for females to practice as well
20:29
Yeah, that's a really good question. I think it's so important for females to train in martial arts or any type of thing that's going to build your confidence and strength
20:37
because I think what martial arts gave me is the confidence to tap into this full spectrum of my
20:42
power. So if you're naturally a little more soft, it's like you're like water. Sometimes you're a
20:47
drop of rain and sometimes you can be a tsunami and you have to meet people where they are so that
20:51
you command the respect. And I think that's so important and something that I wish that I did
20:57
earlier in my life because once you build that chi in your life, everything, you're like a magnet
21:04
that attracts the good. And then the second question is, can a woman be a monk
21:09
I think traditionally, yes. I think the history, I'll have Shifu answer, but in our philosophy that Shifu teaches
21:16
anyone that has a good heart can be a monk. If you drop your wallet and somebody picks it up for you
21:21
and hands it back to you, you're a monk in that moment because you saved that person
21:25
If you see an elderly person walking across the street and they need help and you help them across the street
21:30
you have a monk's heart and a monk's mind. And a lot of Shifu's teaching is just because somebody's wearing a robe and having a bald head
21:38
it doesn't mean they're a monk. And don't ever give money to those people on the street
21:41
Here, Times Square. Yeah. Don't give them money? Don't give them money. No, you're not supposed to give those folks money
21:46
Those aren't monks. Really? Man, that's Jimmy and Frank from like down the street
21:51
Yeah, they hand you these little gold things. Fickin' liars. Street forward, stand in
22:00
You encourage everybody. Stay in front of them. Talk to them. Say, man, don't cheat yourself
22:06
Respect yourself. Get out of here. Don't do that. You're a true monk
22:12
You don't do that. You stay inside the monastery. And people come to you
22:18
People make a donation to you. That all fake liars jokers You know how many people in those monk robes that I given money to They liars Yes They deceiving us Give it to me
22:35
Yeah, donate to us. Give it to me. All right, man. Green cheat
22:41
Give it to me. All right. Let me ask you about the heart solter
22:47
What it means. I mean, it is said that every person at some point in their life should hear the heart solter
22:53
You did it actually in a song called Life Changes, I believe Yes
23:00
Yeah, for the Wu-Tang Clan On the Eight Diagrams album, right? And I remember hearing this the first time I heard it
23:08
And this song was an ode to Old Dirty , ODB I want to play it, your part of it, real quick
23:15
And then ask you a question about it The Heart Sultra Thank you.
24:12
That's amazing, round of applause for that. Wow
24:40
What is, Kirby, can you explain what the Heart Sutra is? Wow
24:47
I think Shifu will do a better job at this. Okay, good. Heart Sutra
24:54
Everything from your heart. You make choices, you make decisions. You have good heart, you're spreading good things to the people
25:02
and blessing other people. That's why, whatever you believe, Jesus Christ, God, Allah, Muhammad
25:09
everything you do from your heart. That's what the most important sutra
25:15
is not only Buddhism, in human. You must have loving heart, good heart
25:22
And so is that what was said and when you put that at the end, can you translate
25:28
Life has everything. Life has nothing. Understand. There's no good, no bad
25:35
Depending on yourself, you choose, you decide. You make decisions. This is good
25:41
You feel it's good. That's good. You feel bad. It's bad. There's no dirty, no clean
25:48
No day, no light. Depending on yourself. You make decisions, you choose from your heart
25:57
Choose from your heart. Mike Muse. Yeah. I'm enjoying the conversation. It's really fascinating
26:04
You have such a calm presence about you. It doesn't seem performative. It seems really real
26:08
and that this is really good energy that you have. How do you keep yourself centered in such chaos
26:14
that we're experiencing in society? You mentioned the COVID-19 and the anti-AAPI hate that was happening
26:21
You spoke about it even with love with that. You talked about Kirby, social media, and the poor of nature
26:27
We're constantly absorbing information. There's a constant chaos that we're constantly experiencing in our society
26:35
but you choose to always appearing and i believe it to seem centered and grounded and leading with
26:44
like love and such a great desire and belief in humanity like how do you do that do you not
26:51
pay attention to social media to news do you cut yourself off from the world do you exist in isolation
26:58
Curious. Understand why we're here. The purpose why we're here. We must understand
27:06
live a meaningful life. Same time. You do good, you do bad
27:11
you do ugly. You choose. I choose do good. In my precious lifetime
27:20
try to help any people as possible. That's my purpose. I'm here
27:26
That's my ultimate goal. That's why you have to always discipline yourself
27:30
That way you can master yourself. How to keep positive. How to spread positive energy, the chi, the love, respect to others
27:40
How do you discipline yourself? Like how often do you meditate? Could you show us, demonstrate meditation for us
27:47
Meditate right now. Okay. There you go. I can't do that though, Shifu
27:52
I can't do that. No fault in our air. I told you. So would you just stay like this
27:56
Yeah, no problem. I can stay like this. Easy. So do you chant or you just put your leg up
28:02
Now we're speaking. It's meditation. That's a very good question that people realize
28:09
You don't have to sit there to meditate. You sit there wasting time
28:14
Make your joints pain. You cannot cross your legs. Maybe you try to
28:20
it. Maybe after a few hours, you can call them to get up. You have to call your friend
28:27
Luckily, you have a cell phone next to you. You can call your friend. Please come help
28:31
me to get up. You can walk upside down. You can go play golf, go play tennis, go swim
28:39
and gathering with friends. Go watch a movie, play a video game. Everything you do, find
28:46
yourself. It's a meditation. Damn man, he's dropping a lot of gems today, boy
28:53
It's like Confucius over here. I'm calling my friends to tell them to come speak to
28:58
Kirby and Abbott. The one inch punch has said that you could generate up to
29:04
35 miles per hour worth of power, right? Can you still do that
29:11
Oh snap. Should I get a book or something? I can make a
29:14
song just from here, yeah? Okay, yeah. See? You don't need to
29:22
When you fight Don't realize You don't need to You don't need to
29:26
Pull your fist back Right here Just from here Just go Do it
29:34
Across the mic You do it You said you knew how Don't break it
29:40
Don't hit the mic Don't hit the mic Wow BJ Come here
29:46
You train Let's see, so B, can you demonstrate that to you? Yeah, but demonstrate to BJ's one of
29:50
no, come over here. You gotta get on the camera, BJ, don't be hiding. Don't do that to Mikey
29:55
BJ's like, , you want him to punch me? Nah, nah, I want him to show you
30:00
See? Right here, yeah. I haven't practiced in a long time. Let me try this. Let me try it
30:18
Wow. See? But you don't hear, though. I didn't have that. It was nice, though, BJ. You did good
30:24
You did good. You did good. Do you have a question for him? That's somebody who trains? You can do it right here, BJ. Where are you going
30:29
Get on the camera, BJ. BJ, what are you doing? Yeah, my question is, and you know, like, first, it's an honor to meet you
30:38
Me too. I'm, like, excited. I don't get excited over artists or singers
30:42
No, he doesn't. But Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, and you, you can hear my voice
30:49
It's like, this is excitement. I was lucky enough to be trained by grandmasters
30:56
Grandmaster Shim, Detroit. ninth degree black belt. Grandmaster Soho Kong, eighth degree black belt. Grandmaster Y.H. Park
31:05
ninth degree black belt. And the training with the black belts, it's like they'll teach you how to punch and fight. With the grandmasters, the focus was on
31:19
the technique. You never practiced to hit a break, but you knew the technique
31:28
And when you hit the brick, only two knuckles hit the brick or just a palm
31:34
It was the first time you did it and it happened. What blows my mind, a monk, I don't know how you can like bend a sword
31:45
Spear. A spear. How you can do that because I don't understand our weights from your testicles
31:55
You know, like you're learning. That seems, how do you do that
32:00
So you bent a sword on your neck? A spear. I can bend two spears
32:07
I can bend two spears. I can broken them. You can smash the stones on my back at the same time
32:16
I have no problem. I'll clarify. It's two sharp spear arrows against his bare skin
32:22
which he'll use the nape of his neck to bend by leaning into the spear
32:26
and somehow the spirit doesn't pierce his skin. Nope. But when you was coming up as..
32:30
Better not. But when you was training, how did you, the first time
32:37
how did you do that? Develop that. Develop that from the beginning at a younger age
32:43
Younger age, you can use the fingers. You can, like, step first
32:48
Day by day, year by year, you just build it. Get used to it
32:53
For many years of practice and understand, when you practice physical, it's not physical
32:58
It's philosophy. It's spirit practice. That's why I said you have to take self-discipline
33:05
Every day. Every day. No excuses to make. I'm tired. The weather is so cold, so hot
33:13
I don't feel good. Get up. Get up. Do something. When you start to make excuses in life
33:20
the excuses never go away. You already bond friend with them They love you They like to around you They want to hang on with you baby You know what I saying There no excuses to make in our lives Stop making excuses Stop it
33:39
Life's so short. Life's precious. Catch it every moment, every day. Cherish it. Let's move life forward
33:47
I love it. Shi Yan Ming is here. Kirby's here. the USS, the USA
33:53
Shaolin Temple, they're offering free children's Shaolin martial art classes for the public of charter schools
33:59
in the New York City and New Jersey area. You can follow them at
34:02
USA Shaolin Temple. Right? We got somebody on the line right now. Principal Cook, how you doing
34:09
Rise and shine, man. What up, brother? What's up, Sway? HB citizens. Good to be back
34:15
Now, Principal Cook. Yeah, Principal Cook is the principal and administrator of Westside High School in Newark, New Jersey
34:22
You talk about a good heart and giving back. He has done so much for the entire community with his students there
34:31
He put washer and dryers in the school so the kids can wash their clothes
34:35
There's a kitchen there so the kids can be fed. There's so many beautiful things at this school
34:40
and when Kirby and you, Abbott, mentioned what you guys are doing in terms of free classes, I thought let us reach out to Principal
34:47
Archbar Cook and see if this is something that his students at the high school would be interested in
34:53
Kirby, can you explain to him the program that you guys are doing? Yeah, nice to meet you, Principal Cook. Thank you for calling in
35:00
We are offering free field trips for any of your teachers who want to bring their class for a field trip
35:06
We'll have a one-hour class for them where we'll be teaching them philosophy, history of Shalem Martial Arts
35:12
as well as what Shifu would call action meditation to help expand their experiences and sort of see the Asian-American culture at the temple
35:23
So we welcome you to the temple. We're at 102 Allen Street, New York City
35:27
Cook, go, man. Mention me, Cook. You'll get in good. He talking to the people right here
35:34
I could dissuade this, y'all. Absolutely. It's free. Thank you, Kirby. I would love to bring my kids because I know the discipline that it brings
35:42
and just to show them another life outside my city. So this is awesome
35:46
I'm definitely going to take advantage of this. Do it. Peace. All right
35:50
Thank you, Cook. Cook, I'm going to get Kirby's information, and you guys can connect
35:54
Okay, Cook? And Cook, come get the TV, Cook. Cook, come get the TV
35:58
Come get the Cook TV. We back away from break. Okay, all right, Cook
36:02
I was watching it last night. Before I take it back, come get the TV
36:06
All right, Cook? All right, man. Lou and Callie, you got a question? Yes, sir
36:12
Good morning, everybody. Have a couple of these. Sway, good morning. What's up? So my question, hey, so first and foremost, I'm a nurse
36:21
and I'm currently a studying practitioner. I'm actually just leaving an assignment up by your area in California
36:28
up in Oakland area, Sway, headed to Phoenix for my next job. So my question is regarding this lifestyle
36:39
And first, I'm curious, like, is there a certain diet that you must maintain to be able to do all this
36:48
Because, you know, they say you are what you eat, right? And so my question is like the health attributes to this type of lifestyle that you live the monk lifestyle What do you eat What helps you to be able to maintain to do all of this
37:05
So that's my big question. Peace. Thank you for calling in, man
37:11
Good question. Good question for the people in general in life. Eating the most important priority in our lives
37:19
You have to know who to eat. that means don't eat too much fried food
37:24
first first you eat too much fried food hard to digest you put hard work for your system
37:31
hard to get out that's first first don't eat too much cheese
37:36
because your cholesterol your blood try to eat more vegetables more soup
37:43
just like you dump the water on the sand like a dump water on the sand
37:51
immediately the sand observing the water your body is same thing your body is drinking soup for example
37:59
easily to digest to eat out life is so beautiful just like living life
38:06
don't hold on to it eating same thing don't hold on to it
38:11
hold too much junk in the stomach in the system make you sick
38:14
same thing in our lives Don't hold too much in the brains, in the heart
38:20
Let it go. Let it go. Let it go. Let it go, man
38:24
Hey, Lou, you're a citizen, brother. Thank you, man. Sway in the morning. Before you all have to go, we got to wrap it up
38:32
You have a mantra, more chi, train harder. More chi, train harder
38:38
Tell me about that. More chi, train harder. Not only for Sheldon Temple martial arts practitioners
38:44
Protesters, not only for students, for disciples, for everybody. Always encourage yourself
38:52
More Qi. Qi means life first, energy. You have Qi, you can deal with your life. You can
39:00
deal with reality. You can deal with the rest of the world. If you have no Qi, you cannot speak
39:05
If you have no Qi, you cannot live life. If you have no Qi, you cannot walk. You walk one block
39:11
two blocks will you feel god i'm tired that's not chi also encourages of more chi to do work do
39:20
better as best as you can do the kids go to school encourage yourself more chi study harder
39:28
to build your future brighter light yeah train harder you have to you have to train harder you
39:35
You have to work harder. You'll be able to reach that destination you want to reach
39:41
You don't challenge yourself. You don't encourage yourself. There's no improvement in life
39:48
Okay, and this is my final question, man. Like when you go out on dates
39:54
how do you approach a person you want to date? You go to date
40:01
You do like this. Oh, okay. That's what he did? Oh, I didn't know
40:07
He just kicked his leg up. He kicked his leg up. Like this, yeah? Yeah
40:12
Is that what he did? How did he approach you? Yo, first, first, confidence. Confidence
40:19
Confidence is the key in our lives. Yes. Not only in martial arts training fighting You have no confidence You have nothing in general Wherever you practice martial arts 30 40 50 years you have no confidence you cannot fight
40:35
You cannot protect yourself. You cannot protect others. You got to date
40:42
You have no confidence. How can you stand tall, being proud, and talk to the girl? Impossible
40:48
You have to be proud. I like you. I like you. I like you
40:53
You're beautiful, you know. Yeah, I want to, you know, spend some time with you
40:58
Straight forward. Being confident. You approach. Yeah. And if that don't work
41:03
show him the leg, baby. Show him the leg. This works too
41:07
I see Kirk. This works too. You lift up your legs. Works. He telling the truth, this guy
41:12
I think chivalry is really important. Yeah. It's dead. Well, I don't want to say it's dead
41:17
but I think it's lost sometimes. And I think a part of the martial arts tradition
41:22
also is like honor and discipline and all of that. And I think that can be very attractive
41:27
to certain people. Oh, damn. She should sum that up, man. Y'all dropped a lot of gems
41:33
Next time I approach somebody, I'm about to do it like that. I'm about to just kick my leg up
41:37
Put your leg up. You got to get it up there. You got to train. I'm almost there
41:41
She might be like, are you okay? She's like, are you in pain right now
41:46
Oh, let me help you. And then you'll get her number, I guess. She could ride with you in an ambulance
41:51
you know, it'd be romantic. Demonstrate something for us. You have some close-ups on this
41:57
Okay, is it okay? Like this? No. Wow, do that again? Oh, man
42:05
Oh, jeez. What else can you show us, man? Ready? The whole studio shook
42:16
Jeez. Can you do some punch combinations? Yeah, of course. But don't hit nothing
42:22
So have you ever fought a professional boxer
42:33
I fought in China. I fought in China. Easy. You discipline yourself
42:39
You train every day. You have very quick reflex. How about confidence first
42:47
Timing. Reflex. The skills doesn't take first place. Yeah, confidence, timing, reflex
42:53
Exactly, yeah Thank you, man Wow This girl's cost less Okay Yo, Shifu, Shiyami
43:01
Thank you, brother Thank you for all that you do Wow To For The World
43:06
Thank you All the people you impacted in The World Salute to RZA, Wu-Tang Clan
43:12
For even adapting this philosophy And introducing it to their music It's helped so many people
43:18
Bokeem Woodbine Last time I was at the temple, he was there training
43:22
Wesley Snipes, that's my brother Wesley Snipes He's incredible, Rosie Perez That's my sister
43:29
