yo that voice right there that was way
0:03
back in 2015 had the beat I remember
0:06
through the mathematics on that seven
0:08
seven oh man that number seven got so
0:11
much significance to it it makes so much
0:13
sense that this man is joining us today
0:15
Tracy what's the date today today is
0:18
October November November
0:24
after October there you go November 8th
0:26
2022. there you go it has nothing to do
0:29
with seven but I just thought I'd try to
0:30
add that up but if you if you add 11
0:33
plus 8 you got what nine nineteen and
0:37
then uh 22 plus 19 equals what more 31
0:40
or something 31. what are we doing you
0:43
stop the two plus the nine forty one to
0:45
one foot yeah you do you divide that
0:47
times four no I don't know man but
0:48
listen this is a reason why we're here
0:50
today okay
0:52
we're here today I remember this young
0:54
man first came up to the show we was
0:56
celebrating St Louis
0:58
right and we were talking about his
1:00
career how when he first came out he he
1:02
made impact when he put out his first
1:04
his first mixtape and then he put out
1:06
more mixtapes 666 was it three six three
1:11
six and then black Jupiter mixtape
1:13
that's when around the time he came and
1:14
hung out with us since then we've been
1:17
watching this star rise and rise and
1:19
rise and one of the things I read about
1:22
him that I think really describes who he
1:25
is and his contribution to the music if
1:28
somebody said it's black authenticity
1:30
black authenticity and I'll listen to
1:34
his music over and over I even went back
1:36
and listened to some of the older music
1:37
as I listened to this album last night
1:39
and I actually drifted off in meditation
1:42
tuning into this album sonically
1:45
what he's doing sonically with the
1:47
vibrations and the sonic waves of this
1:49
music reminded me of Music I heard
1:52
growing up that I was able to drift and
1:54
think and contemplate and imagine
1:57
through the music I was listening to
1:58
those music that music was Earth Wind
2:01
and Fire that music was The Commodores
2:03
that music was Boosie Collins
2:06
and so when I listened to this album
2:08
those names came to mind I couldn't wait
2:10
to congratulate him for being able to
2:13
reach the frequency of some of these
2:15
legendary musicians that have come
2:17
before him and do something that's more
2:19
modern in 2022 as he ushers us into this
2:23
new era of Music nothing about him has
2:26
bended Tracy his Integrity is intact
2:29
he's fortified with nothing but
2:32
authenticity I want to welcome him back
2:34
to the show please give it up for the
2:36
one and only smino is bad
2:40
what's happening man
2:42
[Music]
2:45
oh man man I was telling them this story
2:48
about Boosie Collins
2:50
in this project man and and and you told
2:55
me that pussy's wife or who was it yeah
2:58
yeah Boosie wife she called me Lil
3:00
Boosie man she uh actually had Boosie
3:02
Collins on the album he still is um on
3:05
the part two I plan to drop but uh yeah
3:07
I have Boosie on the album man he loved
3:09
my music bro it's crazy Boosie Collins
3:12
what a good round of a man come on
3:16
congratulations what did Boosie Collins
3:19
say to you and what is and how what does
3:21
that mean when you get the legends to
3:23
stamp you like that man it's lit it's
3:25
lit he he real cool he actually still
3:28
talk like that like Baba like who must
3:31
move like you know what I'm saying like
3:32
he really still talk like this so I
3:34
don't know it was kind of just you know
3:35
a a moment of like whoa like that's hard
3:39
like you know what I'm saying I got a
3:40
lot of rap peers and like artist peers
3:42
that's my age but when like somebody
3:44
like Boosie you know what I'm saying
3:45
it's like damn I'm making some music or
3:47
something huh yeah man uh smina was here
3:50
man um just for those who don't know
3:52
where you get your name from smino uh
3:54
that's why he leave for doggy style
4:04
my last name Smith and um I like I like
4:07
uh the movie New Jack City and I used to
4:09
go by C Smith that was my first right
4:10
now I I was calling myself Smee and then
4:13
um I watched New Jack City and I like to
4:15
flip my name like Smitty Pablo Smitty
4:17
Jacks you know the Grigio all this stuff
4:19
and uh I seen Nino Brown so I'm like I'm
4:22
Smee I'm gonna be smino brown and then I
4:24
was just like I made my my Twitter name
4:26
and then I took the brown off because
4:28
I'm like dang it'll be easier for girls
4:30
to just say smina I'm just thinking how
4:32
like the the quickest things girls can
4:33
say
4:34
I swear I love it you know same
4:38
reasoning yeah
4:40
girl say my name mad easy it's easy to
4:43
remember sway yo somebody say sweat can
4:46
y'all say sway
4:47
see she took bomb
4:49
go away
4:52
Serena did you go into your project
4:55
excited you know sometimes artists when
4:57
they're about to start a new project or
4:59
do something it could be pressure oh my
5:01
gosh I gotta Top This I Gotta do this
5:03
but
5:04
um the feedback you're getting
5:06
everybody's excitement we even have
5:07
phone Blitz phone calls already coming
5:09
in for you like did you go into it
5:11
excited yeah I mean I I start making
5:14
this album the day I got off my last
5:16
tour which was 2000 the end of 2019.
5:19
well no mid 2019 as soon as I got off
5:22
the bus I made a song called love for
5:23
rent and um so I wasn't really thinking
5:26
about making an album I just was doing
5:27
what I do we hang out in the studio I'm
5:29
like like Kobe or gym red LeBron and Jim
5:31
Ray I'd be in the studio like
5:32
legitimately I think it's so funny how
5:35
we kicked off this interview going back
5:37
seven years for when you did your
5:39
Freestyle right that was crazy I might
5:40
sound like a baby I'm saying crazy on it
5:43
I want to let you see how far you come
5:45
that's all I got control of my voice I
5:46
ain't know it was a lot going on it's
5:48
Gonna Change again yeah but also like
5:50
even like the JLo reference because of
5:52
the freestyle you saying couldn't keep
5:54
the JLo um Mark Anthony but then on this
5:56
record on Noel's you said um been
5:59
Afflicted like feel like Jayla I'm being
6:02
Afflicted feel like Jayla You Wanna Lay
6:04
Low yes and it also just in general
6:07
makes me want to know because smito we
6:09
said this before you and stepped into
6:10
the room and we've been saying this
6:11
you're incredibly talented like the
6:14
pockets the lyricism
6:16
um there's also a beautiful Harmony
6:18
effortless Harmony to your voice and I'm
6:21
wondering like did you even have like
6:23
vocal lessons because there's something
6:26
in your voice where I don't know how you
6:28
were able to find maybe your style how
6:31
many times that you had to kind of play
6:33
with this instrument called your vocal
6:35
cords yeah but it stands out in a way
6:37
that I feel like hip-hop needs no thank
6:41
you I ain't never had vocal lessons I
6:42
wanted to but I always felt like I
6:44
couldn't find nobody who voice was like
6:45
mine like that like I want to learn more
6:48
like breathing control it's still stuff
6:50
I want to do better with my voice but um
6:52
I just be running around screaming and
6:54
annoying my friends and just singing
6:56
songs that I made that they probably
6:58
never gonna hear you know what I'm
6:59
saying and just doing it all day and and
7:01
I mean it ended up working out like I
7:03
usually sing with auto tone live I did
7:05
Jimmy Fallon last night no auto-tune did
7:07
you hear that hold up but we're gonna
7:08
bring that up but he's done it before we
7:09
could he did it Jimmy Fallon live that's
7:11
a stunt bike
7:14
yeah no Auto tone on Jimmy Fallon man it
7:16
was a big move for me I felt good so I
7:19
still think you should take the vocal
7:20
lessons it doesn't matter if they sing
7:22
like you they're going to teach you the
7:24
breathing techniques and that's all that
7:26
can help you 20 years from now 30 years
7:28
from now if you still decide to do shows
7:30
your residencies in different places
7:32
once you master that breath control
7:34
you'll be able to hit notes like out the
7:36
park man oh that's the goal I got you
7:38
yeah oh I'm trying to find somebody you
7:41
said you did it without um autotune
7:43
which I could probably I can imagine if
7:45
it's an artist who you use auto-tune
7:48
their entire life that's a big deal yeah
7:50
like it's not even like so like the way
7:52
I use other
7:53
like I used to use it live and it just
7:55
used to keep me in like the the key yeah
7:58
but like after a while it started
7:59
messing with me because I I'm like all
8:01
right I'm on the key and it's making me
8:02
feel stuck here like you know you got
8:04
the natural beings to your voice and
8:05
stuff and it was making me feel stuck so
8:07
I just stopped using it on songs and you
8:10
feel liberated yeah I mean it's all the
8:12
same it just depends I like auto-tune I
8:14
like how it sounds sometimes it ain't
8:15
even like a I feel like I'm better
8:17
because of it it's just like you know
8:19
what I'm saying it's cold to me I could
8:20
feel like you could I think you could
8:22
feel the actual essence of what I'm what
8:24
I'm trying to get across Mo that's
8:26
Evolution then right when you get a
8:28
stamp Tracy read a quote by J Cole said
8:31
what did J Cole say about smino as an
8:33
artist as a rapper that he's one of the
8:35
greatest lyricists right now when that
8:37
happens
8:38
um what happens like how does does does
8:41
your does your star rise do you notice
8:44
people responding differently when you
8:46
get those kind of quotes does it you
8:48
know do does pressure hit you man I be
8:50
keeping my glasses on bro I don't know
8:52
mostly I don't know I think J Cole for
8:54
that bro but I try my best not to look
8:56
at too much anything bro but the Love Is
8:58
The Love Like You know what I'm saying
9:00
um I think Cole pretty much been kind of
9:02
gave me that kind of love though like I
9:04
don't know I think out really like to
9:06
the public like oh damn he right with me
9:08
know like I ain't seen him like nobody
9:10
probably seen him like just physically
9:12
said like that but Kyle been showing me
9:14
showing the world that he fought with me
9:15
for a while I could say [ __ ] right yeah
9:17
he was trying to really [ __ ] me for a
9:19
while so it's cool bro but it's it's um
9:21
for me personally I think it did more
9:24
for me personally just coming from him
9:26
because it's like you feel me it made me
9:28
more um
9:30
it made me feel like I bet I'm gonna
9:33
really really really good I feel like
9:34
I've been going crazy but I'm like
9:35
confirmation yeah I'm like all right
9:37
best I did I'm gonna go crazy yeah love
9:39
love for rent um so you single
9:42
yeah
9:43
so you you basically prostitute
9:47
the same thing like
9:49
when you rent Your Love out
9:54
prostitution Ain't About Love sway oh
9:57
okay it ain't About Love bro okay don't
10:00
break that down for me love for rent no
10:02
I ain't slitting out my heart I'm just
10:03
it's more so like um leveling is just
10:05
you know it's a lot of um different
10:09
things that we kind of have energy ties
10:12
to and I noticed that it's a lot of
10:15
things that had my energy too tied up
10:17
but I like love that thing and I just
10:19
felt like I needed to get some of my
10:20
energy back so to cut that I felt like
10:22
before all of that happened I was in the
10:25
stage of love for rent you feel me just
10:27
like hitting your head and grabbing your
10:28
head opposed to hitting your head and
10:30
being like Oh I know why I hit my head
10:31
you know what I'm saying so it was like
10:33
I don't know if that makes sense but
10:34
like yeah that kind of makes sense like
10:37
that's like a little more thought you
10:39
thought about why I keep hitting my head
10:40
over and over again cutting cords it
10:43
feels like yeah it feels like a lot of
10:45
reflection where it's like what kind of
10:46
habits have you decided at this stage in
10:48
your life gotta go
10:49
oh I'm not saying boundaries you know
10:52
not telling people when I'm like really
10:54
just not rocking with something you know
10:56
I'm saying I'm real I'm real like uh I'm
10:59
the
11:00
how do I put it
11:02
I don't know if you ever watched
11:03
Entourage
11:04
yeah so like everybody be in my house
11:06
everybody like it's love it's all good
11:08
so it's just like I'm just personally
11:10
been learning to just like if I do feel
11:12
the way say it because if I don't it
11:14
just kind of you know gross and that's
11:16
deeper than just like my friend group
11:18
it's like okay go down to family if
11:20
you're not doing it with this group or
11:21
you're not doing it with this group or
11:22
this group you're not gonna do with none
11:23
of them so but everybody I'm on some
11:25
boundary box
11:26
Vinnie he had a homie Hemorrhage hassles
11:30
that's when there's too many homies
11:33
you know him homie Hemorrhage there's
11:36
too many homies hanging out so it
11:38
becomes a hassle you you haven't
11:40
experienced that a homie Hemorrhage has
11:43
a Triple H Triple H dog wow I'm like
11:46
that he using his literary devices man
11:55
um
11:57
um the homie hemorrhoids
12:03
you know sometimes homies hang out to
12:05
the point where after a couple of weeks
12:07
it's like what's your contribution man
12:08
like okay not my partner my partners we
12:11
really we really cool mine be more like
12:13
uh leaving that balled up napkins all
12:15
over the place and stuff like that yeah
12:23
it's around the house little snot
12:26
tissues she'd be washing her hands and
12:28
trying to recycle the napkins I'm like
12:30
bro
12:32
we doing a hype
12:35
Bros
12:39
you gotta reuse the napkin all right
12:43
look uh what song I want to play the
12:45
defibrillator
12:47
um foreign
12:48
that song that's the song after I
12:50
listened to it twice I ended up like
12:52
meditating off of it and fell asleep and
12:54
I became I became a like a personality
12:57
and a song I was in the I was in the
12:59
song
13:01
that's crazy because the song even
13:04
though I fell asleep the song was
13:05
playing in my head it just I didn't I
13:07
haven't slept so good like I was just so
13:10
at peace because your music just had me
13:13
in a certain place let's play this song
13:15
what is this song What motivated this
13:16
song in that title
13:19
um defibrillator is because I said
13:21
defibrillator for the flavor and it was
13:22
just like you know we're talking about
13:24
the heart you know I'm saying something
13:25
to rejuvenate your heart but um
13:28
I wrote defibrillator basically from the
13:31
um standpoint of my music being able to
13:34
be loved for you when nothing else is
13:37
around so like they're saying I'll be
13:39
loved when nuns around and uh I'm
13:41
playing the drums I know that
13:42
yeah
13:43
okay so um I don't know I feel like it
13:46
was just really like you can really feel
13:48
me on her I wanted something that you
13:49
know you could really feel love it man
13:51
let's play it we gotta open up these
13:52
phone lines 888
13:54
742-3345 and right now Cimino love for
13:58
rent is the album
14:00
that Noir was released four years ago
14:03
man
14:05
I've been rocking with this dude since
14:07
2012. but that's crazy bro ain't that
14:10
something man you look exactly the same
14:13
the hell black don't crack why you think
14:16
they may crack
14:16
[Music]
14:22
this project is not trendy you know it
14:25
doesn't sound like it sounds like you
14:28
are and I'm starting to hear a lot of
14:30
folks really taking that leap of faith
14:32
and not making music that sound like
14:34
music because that mute that sound is
14:36
working today are you having
14:37
conversations with other artists about
14:39
it or what is it like
14:41
you know yeah not doing the same thing
14:44
yeah um I say a lot of like
14:46
um my rap homies that I really rock with
14:49
like the uh jit or like dochi or like uh
14:53
man it's a lot of people but
14:55
it's a lot of people that's really just
14:57
um
14:58
into their own flavor like and and into
15:01
what other people do as well let's uh
15:05
less so like I want to make what they
15:06
make it more so like I want to collab
15:07
with them right so it's easier to collab
15:09
with somebody to do absolutely what you
15:12
don't do I do not I cannot do this and
15:14
you do this let's do a song that's how I
15:15
feel you know what I mean so um yeah I
15:18
think we just finding each other now
15:19
more have you ever been in the studio
15:21
with someone you realize we do the same
15:23
thing I'm not going to be inspired not
15:25
that it's not good I'm just not gonna be
15:27
inspired if I'm gonna come clean don't
15:28
nobody do what I do bro okay if I'm
15:31
honest because I I the way I am in the
15:33
studio I'm kind of like a chameleon I'm
15:34
like if you're doing this I'm gonna do
15:36
this but I ain't been in the studio with
15:38
somebody like I can't be because I only
15:39
think I end up in the studio like yeah I
15:41
swear I'm not that like uh I'm not like
15:44
a real friendly like let's collab ass
15:46
artist like I really make my music by
15:47
myself but like but it's cool I love to
15:49
collab with people I know but it's like
15:51
I don't think I would end up in this
15:52
situation like uh damn like I shouldn't
15:55
have came here like I don't really end
15:58
up in that situation that's hilarious
15:59
you mentioned Jed who's incredible two
16:01
round of applause I said man couldn't
16:03
put that dude in the plot yes sir
16:06
um you guys are doing a tour together oh
16:09
yeah yeah love is forever too you know I
16:11
got love for rent he got uh the forever
16:13
story so we decided to do a co-headline
16:15

18:01
weeks ago because I was excited I got my
18:03

18:06
yeah she sure did so yeah I know I had
18:08
the club back in fact I heard that he
18:10
was going to be on today I am cheesing
18:12
so hard on the other side
18:17
um so I'm a really huge fan um I wanted
18:19
to tell you about this
18:22
the end of
18:23
I think it's called already on she
18:25
already decided um he said again yeah I
18:29
can't or what I can't control is the
18:31
[ __ ] that I don't stress and I'm kind of
18:33
like use that as a mantra for myself
18:35
because like I overthink a lot so I got
18:37
a tattooed on my arm as like a little
18:39
daily reminder that's crazy
18:42
wow I just wanted to say that I'm a
18:45
really huge fan I listen to you all the
18:47
time
18:48
um I really love the album day it came

20:05
you from Philly
20:08
yeah okay
20:11
yeah man what did you like about this
20:14
music man I I like uh the messaging in
20:17
it but I'm a musician I'm uh you know a
20:19
musician you know
20:24
oh it's Unique like yeah everybody
20:26
replicated so when you said that earlier
20:28
it's like it was like kind of like like
20:30
huh ain't Nobody Got no star likes Reno
20:33
you know what I'm saying that's why I
20:34
was like yeah he's a different he's a
20:36
different breed 100 bro appreciate 100
20:38
man thank you CNC I was hoping man
20:40
before you go since we we started the
20:43
interview with an acapella and I know
20:46
that's your thing you know and
20:48
that was seven years ago I want to see
20:51
what the evolution is seven years later
20:53
you got acapella for us is that possible
20:55
I might got a little show man I'm a
20:58
singer now though bro I ain't even
20:59
supposed to be doing this to next year
21:00
wait hold up Omar Epps is here so I just
21:03
seen him man I just see if we could get
21:05
him to come here
21:07
oh he went to the bathroom yeah Emily
21:09
walked it back
21:11
I need to know why he do us like that
21:13
with that kind of thing bro
21:17
yeah man I love that show bro
21:21
put me on power bro he ready
21:24
as my cousin put me on power bro you
21:28
really looking into getting in acting
21:29
and stuff like that yeah I want to act I
21:31
feel like I'll be good you want to be I
21:33
got a real good dry face so I feel like
21:35
that made like the that's the middle
21:37
ground and the fact that you know that
21:39
you're a chameleon already that's gonna
21:40
help you and I think the music videos
21:42
like even for this one um for 90 proof
21:45
of coal and it's like six minutes and
21:46
it's very cinematic I feel like that's
21:48
already showing a preview of what you
21:49
could do no no that was the goal I
21:51
wanted I'm like man I ain't the CD
21:53
acting man you know what I'm saying to
21:56
see it all right man let's start with
21:57
this this would be like an audition
21:59
right now this acapella all right I just
22:01
audition okay yeah
22:03
um my antennas tend to only tap in with
22:07
the homies ten toes through the hottest
22:09
temperature tinted the whole thing girls
22:10
that can't even read the signs trying to
22:12
read my son talking as if she was
22:14
mindful she ain't my slime I always say
22:16
that women the greatest artists of all
22:18
time because all they do is draw
22:19
conclusions they impress on my line but
22:21
then I thought about all the times that
22:23
I felt like that I went out in the
22:24
argument all because I couldn't process
22:25
answers in time now I'm back in Chicago
22:28
my home girl still on the same thing I
22:30
heard she on forehead she gang bang I
22:32
tip the glass and post champagne gang
22:34
cause she's still with me the thinnest
22:35
line we walk cause I know in some other
22:37
line she probably had kid with me don't
22:38
toy with those emotions end up paying
22:40
that Fisher Price over some [ __ ] and my
22:42
mouse and my most memorable motion was
22:45
sitting still spitting still smoking
22:47
still but all these W's back to back
22:49
they thirsty to search my neck my circle
22:51
to Circuit my John travolt just turned
22:53
to the max blue loaded stuff thin effect
22:55
she holistic she ended that
22:56
hieroglyphics right on the walls and her
22:58
glitch in her internet why fight the
23:00
blend of brown fee nothing to give me
23:01
that mama told me to suck I'm taking
23:03
shoes telling member that I apply the
23:05
same Concepts to the game [ __ ] give me
23:07
that give me that take that bad boy bad
23:09
[ __ ] puppy calling my heart
23:14
no
23:19
know hey
23:22
let's not stop there man you wanted to
23:24
meet him this is one of the most iconic
23:27
faces of Our Generation when it comes to
23:29
the big screen and now we gotta add
23:31
Arthur to the title is the one and only
23:33
Omar absence
23:40
[Music]
23:40
[Applause]
23:54

23:56
