ladies and gentlemen first of all if you're in the Bay Area and you tuned in to this show I
0:06
need you to call up right now 888 742 3345 uh-huh I say if you in the bay and
0:14
you true bayaran you ain't even got to be in the bay 888 742 3345 give this man
0:21
a round of applause I'mma tell you something come on we've been watching this young man this star rise for quite
0:28
some time Tracy G the traj has been commendable I've seen this young man rap
0:33
as a as a youth prior to his teenage years this man been putting together
0:39
lyrics his dedication and passion for the culture is incomparable it's interesting because I
0:45
watched him we told a story I told a story of my connection to him that he doesn't really even know a staling story
0:51
yeah you know how I I met his first person in his family I met was his uncle Reggie Jackson Mr October the legendary
0:59
and he did something it was a staple in my career uh where he made me reflect on
1:04
myself when he turned me down and renting out of office out of one of his buildings but I learned something from
1:11
that soon after that I met his mother who worked for the same radio station and they happened to live in the same
1:16
area and I got a chance to meet his grandparents and then soon after that I I met his magnificent father who's been
1:23
step by step by his side throughout this whole career his attorney as well as his
1:28
manager and so I have personal interest yes in this man's life let alone his
1:34
career and I've been very fortunate to watch him grow as a a young man and um as a little guy into a young man and now
1:41
he's a grown man and I I want to say this to him because he's um he's a
1:47
thinker he might be even a overthinker fact he's been overthinker
1:53
for quite some time as many artists tend to be I get it but I recognize what that is Citizens and and you too when you're
2:00
really passionate about something you can't let it go you think about it when you wake up you think about it before
2:06
you go to bed and you think about it in between and the way this young man has been driven and everything he does if is
2:14
reflected everything he does whether it's music uh whether it's friendships
2:21
I've seen him be loyal to a lot of people that were not loyal to him oh no
2:26
right and I seen him tolerate that and then I saw him come to New York City when you from Oakland and you from the
2:32
west coast to come to New York City is quite the challenge it's culture shock
2:38
oh yeah it's a paradigm shift that man got accepted to NYU at a time that he
2:43
wasn't sure if he was supposed to be there that's right he had impostor syndrome I did I remember talking to him
2:48
about in his freshman year and I said well if they accepted you that meant you're supposed to be here he graduated
2:55
from NYU give this man a round of applause come on
3:00
man come on Deeper Than Rap he formed his own record company that it's called Crea the LLC that's right he's a
3:08
independent artist doing independent Distribution on his own alongside his parents right my and he got a new song
3:16
out called love myself give it up for Jay Walt he's back give it up for the one and only J what's going on y'all think for you
3:23
I'm say you know what I'm saying it's family it's home it's always an honor no man
3:28
honor is is is ours you know because mine is being like a uncle to you you
3:35
know I'm a fan of this too brother you know we we got similar paths we walk to get to where we are a ain't that
3:41
something crazy huh yeah I'm wearing an all City t-shirt today see my independent
3:48
label you know and um I I would imagine that right now is an exciting time for
3:53
you yeah but it might be a kind of a scary time for you yeah yeah sure speak
3:58
to that cuz you grad and now you don't have the shelter of a campus life you don't have pill grants
4:05
or loans or whatever you you got to get out there on your own yeah what's postgraduation been like yeah postgrad
4:11
has been good you know it's been treating me good man it's something that I've been I've been enjoying it's definitely been an adjustment you know
4:17
what I'm saying being being used to like waking up in the morning going to a class and doing this and doing that but
4:22
now it's like you know I get to wake up and I get to do what I love I get to goad to it and like write bars or go to
4:27
the studio or like you know really put into my craft so just giving me more time to really just hone in my craft and
4:33
everything you know um so yeah it's been cool you know what I'm saying back in Oakland now so that's also been a shift to just like rebuilding this Foundation
4:40
back home you know what I'm saying and like reh having like what home means to me now as an adult you know I grew up in
4:46
Oakland you know what I'm saying gr as as a kid as a youth all the way to a teenager moved out here for a lot of my adult years you know so now that I'm
4:53
back in my early adult years you know what I'm saying it's like rebuilding this relationship back in the bay back at home in Oakland and Oakland showing
5:00
nothing but love you don't feel a little strange when you go back to Oakland I I don't it's funny someone was asking me
5:06
that yesterday they're like cuz you still have like a like you you obviously you have this West Coast to you this Bay Area FL but also like you have some
5:12
little like New York Essence to you now a little bit some so they're like do you do they feel do they feel weird do you feel weird going back and I'm like no I
5:18
don't you know cuz Oakland was one of the first places to embrace me and really like take me in and show love to
5:24
to the art and to everything that I'm doing so um yeah it doesn't feel weird it feel it feels good you know I was
5:29
like like for the first time in years I went to first Friday like um a couple couple months ago that's a party they do
5:36
monthly yeah monthly you know what I'm saying and Downtown Oakland and I show it was it was nothing but love you know what I'm saying people people walking
5:42
around jayw jayw photos it was I felt really embraced you know there was like welcome home like we happy that like we
5:48
have someone like you that that's still here that's at home you know what I'm saying and put it on for for us so it
5:53
felt good it feels good that reaction wasn't always there though yeah you you was walking around doing his work but it
5:58
was like being invisible I yeah when when you in that state though when you still feel invisible and you putting all
6:04
this time in that's when a lot of times your faith gets challenged right you know you kind of Wonder am I doing the
6:11
right thing you're only 22 but have you had that moment yet yeah there was definitely um a moment to I mean before
6:18
I even go into that I got to say like moving out to New York was one of the best things I could have done for myself and for my career you know what I'm
6:24
saying moving out to New York I feel like after moving out to out here I got more love from Oakland got more embraced
6:30
from Oakland for when I did come back and it was like oh like you putting on for us you know what I'm saying like I see what you're doing out in New York
6:37
and it it was love like that um but yeah there was times even when I was in New York and I was like okay like am I am I
6:43
doing the right thing like is this the path that I really want to go on then I just had to keep on remembering like yo like this is like I'm supposed to be
6:49
doing this this is what I'm supposed to be doing and remembering that you know like remembering like I'm this is my path this is my passion and I'm on the
6:55
right path Jay wal is with us I love that I do want to speak more unpack more of your experience in New York and some
7:02
of the culture shock and I love that you have a very New York uniform right now with the all black looking very fresh J
7:08
Walt appreciate speak about especially because you went to college here right
7:14
and often times because of our circumstances within the hip-hop culture
7:19
folks have had to choose the path of artistry because they maybe did not have
7:24
the opportunity the funds to go to college right and now we have many artists who also have higher learning
7:32
attached to them what are some of the experiences specifically here in New York that you feel like contributed to
7:39
this level of artistry you're at yeah no yeah I feel like a lot you know first of all like going to cve Davis Institute of
7:46
recording music like I I had amazing teachers you know what I'm saying I had teachers from like Bob Powers you know
7:52
what I'm saying who like you know mix and engineered like tribe Cod Quest and everything to to Black Thought you know
7:57
what I'm saying so like he wasn't black thought class I was yeah I was the from The Roots I'm saying and yeah so having
8:04
like professors like him and you know what I'm saying also like Lauren Davis C Davis's daughter and like all these different professors like they um I
8:10
really had these classes by them and also I took in all the gain that they was giving me whether it was the business side whether it was just like
8:17
my penmanship or performing you know what I'm saying so all these different classes I really made sure I I took care of and like really locked in you know
8:23
and also make connections with these teachers that's another thing like some students have the classes and then be like all right I'm gone boom but I
8:30
really try to make sure like I I poured into my relationship with my teachers to I even that once I graduate I could
8:36
still connect with these teachers and still like reach out if I need anything you know so like really just being
8:41
locked in within within my my classes was something that was big and also like doing shows out here and really getting
8:46
tapped into like the community out here like the the underground Community out here you know what I'm saying like that's something that really helped me
8:52
as well and just like learning like I was in it now so now I was just like tapping in you know what I'm saying from folks like Nico brim you know what I'm
8:58
saying and being tapped in with NI after one of the first ciphers we did together I'm saying right here you know what I'm
9:04
saying so since then like me and Nick been good he he's on tour right our rap I seen him play in Oakland you know what
9:09
I'm saying last week so that that that's been dope you know what I'm saying Nico or cast like life of Tom and fraggy baby
9:14
like I brought them out of my shows you know what I'm saying when I um my last headline show I did I brought them out
9:19
so like really just being tapped in with the the underground Community out here you know what I'm saying as like was
9:25
able to help me like um really be embracive out here you know for someone who's not from here yeah man and and
9:31
that that makes a difference too because when you're not from here you know you you almost seek out validation right you
9:38
made great friends with common you made great friends with logic um not to mention April Walker was somebody that
9:46
Walker Weare Dan Charis who all Dan used to do a segment here on our show as well
9:52
Dan Charis was with American records he put out art of origin that featured Chino Excel uh rest in power
9:59
Excel you know I mentioned too like it's when you're this age and you're pursuing these dreams you know it's the the
10:05
biggest challenge to me and I can recall is the distractions you know that you don't count on and for your for your
10:12
generation you know um it's probably a little different than mine but you you
10:18
had to S you had to like this whole song I love myself right the love myself on lyrics say to me that man I had to you
10:26
know get rid of a lot of toxins yep and to me the toxins could mean a lot of
10:32
things not just what you eat but but who you hang out with 100% And College can be a pretty challenging platform right
10:40
you meet friends that may be there for the rest of your life you meet friends that may only be there for a college career you meet people who have bad
10:47
intentions those with good intentions what's been your experience with in terms of the Social Circles yeah it was
10:53
and what did you learn from it I learned a lot you know what I'm saying especially like they say like your freshman year you know going to have new
11:00
friends your senior year you know what I'm saying so some of that a lot of that actually was true like the folks who I came in with my freshman year you know
11:06
what I'm saying I'm not necessarily cool with anymore just because of like I was able to see true characters you know
11:12
what I'm saying True Light really came out and you know that happens that's life you know but with that like I I was able to bring me some of my closest
11:19
friends to like who I still kick it with and hang out with today you know what I'm saying to this day who I met out here in in New York you know so it
11:25
really showed me that you know like that's that's that's life but also it taught me how to navigate that and how
11:30
to move around and also how to see the real versus the fake and people that's that's really there for you and cares
11:36
about you versus who just there just to show up cuz you know you may be doing a show or you may be going up a sway in
11:42
the morning or doing these little things you know what I'm saying to like really see who's really there for you and that's something I had to I had to see
11:47
you know cuz there was folks that were like gravitated to me because they saw this this level of startom that that started to come as I was doing more
11:54
stuffin my career um and I saw true true intent and where they were really coming from then I had friends who were locked
12:00
in from the soil you know what I'm saying and also I didn't speak on it yet but like also I came out to New York with some of my best friends from when I
12:06
was like 10 11 years old so we all came out here together you know what I'm saying so I went to NYU my homie a went
12:12
to Parson you know what I'm saying my went to another school and my brother SEI went to another school for theater you know so like we all came out here
12:18
together so I I had a bubble with me you know what I'm saying to who came out here together which was which was unity and felt really good for me to know I
12:25
wasn't alone I have my brothers out here with me you know they still your friends yeah these are my dogs yeah these are my
12:31
dogs you with that Uncle St no no come on man this that's I like none of his
12:36
friends they have to prove themselves to me that's fact none of them fact now
12:42
what about um romance what about dating I feel like a lot of that happens too in college and these years and speak about
12:49
that yeah yeah what you feel comfortable share
12:55
because you you rap you write about your life and that's yeah that's real yeah my um yeah you
13:02
know freshman year you know I I definitely that definitely had this challenge I I uh you know I was I was
13:07
fresh out you know out of a relationship out of a high school relationship I was like I'm in New York I mean you know let
13:13
me let me see what I'm what I'm going into and uh I had I had um good
13:18
experiences I had a lot of met a lot of good people met a lot of good women you know and uh that this dude a still in
13:26
this CH you all right it was I I had I had good
13:35
experiences like 20 i i m some good people something ain't right you know
13:42
what I'm saying I mess some good people but they they you know what I'm saying they wasn't necessarily the the right
13:47
ones you know good time not a long time good time not a long time and that exactly was what happened you know out
13:53
here and which also ultimately you know led me to the relationship that that I'm in now you know which is uh which has
13:58
been good relationship you know it's been something that that story as itself has been a trip too like the person who
14:04
I'm with now like my mom used to teach her in high school wow and her and and
14:10
her and my mom were like were tight and and I knew her cuz she was always in the in the Arts Community cuz I grew up as
14:15
an artist she grew up like um dancing within the Oakland Community as well so I knew her you know we we knew of each
14:22
other but we didn't really think about it best F when I was younger I had a little crush on her she was like two years older and I was like damn like she
14:28
Co you know what I I wonder you know but I didn't really think about it too much and then like later on like we ended up
14:34
reconnecting and stuff I remember like I broke up with one of my my ex-girlfriend from from high school and I was like in
14:41
my bag about it and my feelings and my mom was like yo you should go go walk go walk with her go walk with her you know
14:46
what I'm saying go see what happens you know what I'm saying so we went on a walk around the lake and Lake married in Oakland and we just kept on going on
14:51
walks and from there you know we we locked in and that's what happened with that woo your mom
14:59
gangery that she is like saying that's that's that's someone you don't want to mess with man you know what I'm saying
15:05
that's a shooter right there that's a shooter right there shout out M though man gotta give a shout out to my mom and
15:11
your dad man your pop's been um there every step of the way with you you know and um he's as invested as you are so
15:18
when you guys chart on album music and all these different places you all on iTunes whether you all get that plaque I
15:25
saw you post the plaque the other day right man my first plaque man guy got his first CL man I love that man um this
15:33
is what I want to do and by the way she's if I may she's you have a beautiful partner I watched her U watch
15:40
you perform and I said yo she she loves this guy she likes this guy cuz she had
15:45
to go through it too all right um yeah everybody got to go through you can't just get through Uncle I want to break
15:51
down I want to do lyrical breakdown if you're in the Bay Area or anywhere in the world um this is an artist who's been on the rise he's put in a lot of
15:58
work going to start hearing his name a lot he just graduated you know so when you see this new movement that u l
16:04
Russell was a big part of give man he just brought me out at his last compound
16:09
show to do this song he texted me here love myself and he was like bro this sh this song's special you know what I'm saying come out to the last to the to my
16:16
last show that I'm doing in my backyard and do this you know what I'm saying so give a big shout out to lorusso you know what I'm saying and everyone out the b
16:22
who's pushing is moving man it's a great time to be from the bay as the Bay Area artist right now we have so many folks
16:28
going crazy L wrestle you know what I'm saying Simba you know what I'm saying my brother bro you know what I'm saying
16:33
like Larry Jun you know what I'm saying like it's a lot of movement Kamaya a lot of dope people coming out of the town
16:39
right now and just the bay in general and it's it's a movement going on man something special your homies St Ian
16:48
Kelly know Oki J you know what I'm saying who
16:55
are some of the female MC's that are coming thank you for bringing this up man I'm saying there's a lot of dope females you know what I'm saying you got
17:01
my sis TI andore super dope she also starred in a movie one of her first movies you know what I'm saying Earth
17:07
Mama um which did really well so shout out to Tia Nam more Maya B is going crazy baby girl n super dope you know
17:14
what I'm saying super dope spitter out of Oakland you know what I'm saying so yeah those are some of my favorites coming out there's a lot there's a lot
17:19
of um dope artists um and female spitters out of Oakland right now but yeah those are some some good folks I I
17:25
really appreciate um this generation because Tracy made a point that you all
17:31
you don't always hear men young men even in tune with their emotions in the way that you are with this song love myself
17:37
right and I want to talk about this song But first I want to go through it in a lyrical breakdown the single is called
17:43
love myself citizens this song is out you know how we do we support those that come on this platform so please do it uh
17:51
I'm going to go through these lyrics and if you could break down where you were mentally when you wrote them okay all
17:56
good first one okay I'm done with all that that nonsense I threw away the
18:02
toxins what toxins that you threw away yeah so uh man I was I was eating bad I
18:09
wasn't eating right even just people I threw away toxic what kind of stuff were you eating man I was eating junk man I
18:14
was eting especially when I was like I I was in Berlin for a little bit so I lived out in Berlin for like four months
18:20
I was doing stuff out there doing shows and and a lot of stuff out there and also studying out there um and when I
18:26
was in Berlin I had there was a McDonald's right next to where I stay I was almost at McDonald's almost every
18:31
other night with my friends man sh Synchro DJ Synchro you Alberto we was there we was just getting getting them
18:37
good what was your go-to order man I had you know that chicken sandwich some fries and a McFlurry you know what I'm saying and the Murry and mcry you feel
18:44
me but like I I was I was eating a lot of nonsense you know I I was eating stuff like that out here you know what
18:50
I'm saying a lot of chopped cheeses deli sandwiches you know and uh I was just like man like I'm put what am I putting
18:56
in my body and I started to realize like started affecting me like how I was feeling emotionally physically like it's
19:02
it's all just I wasn't doing right plus during that time I was doing a lot of shows I was still in school I was doing
19:08
I was in school I had a class and I would go to do a show then I would travel to go somewhere else and that that was weighing on me but I was like
19:14
yo like what's the first step that I could do to really do better and I was I got to eat right I got to eat right you know what I'm saying it's also when I
19:20
when I saw comment on here and he came up to the show and he was talking about like yo his diet him eating well doing
19:26
all that type of stuff I was like man you let me let me try to pour that into myself too so I started eating right I
19:32
started doing that started practicing meditation and meditating and putting that into my own practice and everything
19:37
and that was like that changed my life that changed your life you know um truly yours is a project you I mean Yours
19:43
Truly that you put out in 2020 right and and on it you even tap into mental health I do right and so I don't know if
19:50
folks realize what you eat can affect your mental health oh yeah right how did that affect you yeah man it it affected
19:57
me tremendously you know like there was times like even just sleepwise right there's times where I couldn't even sleep I I was up you know I was just
20:04
feeling froggy and just like mentally whether it was anxiety or experiencing other different types of emotions and
20:10
stuff and I was I didn't know food could do that I also didn't know that anxiety could be so physical right there were
20:15
times where I always just thought anxiety was a mental thing right but then when I started waking up I was see like my chest pounding like pants
20:22
getting sweaty like my body started feeling aching I didn't know that was a sign of anxiety so a lot of that time I
20:27
was just like br it off and didn't really pay attention to it so it took me like a couple more times of those
20:33
feelings to really see like okay like let me see what's going on I got to do something that's when I realized that I
20:39
was struggling with anxiety this whole time and also started to realize like it's bigger than just like taking these
20:44
different actions and meditating and stuff but I also got to eat right and that's the first steps I I had to do all
20:50
right Jay wers here we talking about his new single love myself which is out now the next lyric on the first verse I was
20:56
on my ass doing bad feeling nauseous now I wake up every morning get straight to
21:02
jogging yeah you jog every day I do man it's not not every day anymore but uh
21:08
when I was I was waking up and jogging you know what I'm saying like my brother he a real athlete you know what I'm saying shout my twin brother Jordan he's
21:14
a track star you know what I'm saying he's graduated school and now is at USC I mean his Masters but I really got
21:19
inspired from from him too you know he he I remember for the longest when I when we were living together he would
21:24
wake up every day and do yoga and I used to look at bro like what are you doing bro like yoga bro like what um and but
21:31
that was a practice that he started to do every morning as well as he was jogging and and running and doing that stuff so I was like man like let me take
21:38
some of what he's doing try to implement that into my own life so like one of the next things I had to do after eating right was was exercising right so I was
21:45
like you know let me jog let me jog more let me jog around Lake Meritt or if I'm out here let me jog around the
21:50
neighborhoods out here and just and get working out so yeah that's something that that I did Implement all right my
21:56
girl got me pulling raspberries from from the garden yeah yeah man yeah she wear the pants the pants what you mean
22:04
you know that expression who wears the pants in a relationship no man no hey brother you know what I'm saying we both don't get in trouble don't get in
22:10
trouble you ain't got to answer that yeah man we both uh you know what I'm saying both put on pants you know what I'm saying we both wave off each other
22:17
man you know what I'm saying we do she does what what she's best and I do what I what I'm best you know what I'm saying but she uh she she's someone too that
22:24
really helped me try to give this authentic lifestyle of like eating good too cuz like she was like out here
22:30
making green juices and very organic stuff and literally like there around the block she was out here pulling
22:36
raspberries and stuff and I'm like you pulling raspberries from random trees bro and you eating that thing like for me I was just like what are you doing
22:42
you know what I'm saying but then like I started pulling these raspberries off the trees and eating it too you know what I'm saying so like so that line is
22:48
the true line like she started pulling raspberries from the garden like that's something like she had me start doing
22:53
okay I Elevate had to do it for my spirit and my mental state yoga with my
22:59
brother [ __ ] Namaste I don't know I don't know if you can say [ __ ] and Namaste like I mean I don't even go
23:06

26:46
extremely well lot I'm naming a lot of women because they in the Forefront right now um but how do you plan to get
26:55
in the conversation or does that even matter to you yeah yeah I mean you know obviously that's something that we that
27:01
we I'm trying to do obviously being in that conversation is where where I'm trying to go where I'm trying to be but really ultimately like what I care about
27:07
is like the music impacting other people you know what I'm saying and like the music impacting like having a reach like
27:12
that like like dude who just called in and say he's going to play that for his son like that type of impact man that that means a world to me you know what
27:18
I'm saying of course I want to be in in those same same ranks as you know as the as the goats you know what I'm saying
27:24
the Kendricks the Cs you know what I'm saying and even the glor railers and lotos and everything and and we there man you know what I'm saying we we we
27:30
coming up man so you know slow but steady you know what I'm saying what did you think of that battle you brought up Kendrick what were your thoughts hey man
27:36
as a as a fan of Hip Hop man I thought I thought that was dope man you know what I'm saying I thought it it was every day
27:42
I was out here with my homies like BR like you hear that new Kendrick or boom you hear that new Drake you know what I'm saying like it was crazy I was in
27:48
the studio um working on working on my album working on my project um when that
27:54
um when that was going on and when Kendrick dropped out like us I was in the studio and I was in the stud with all my hland homies like my Oakland
27:59
homies were in town and they came to the studio they was and I was in the middle of recording and one of my homies was listening to it he was like bro Jay you
28:06
going to love this new kendri [ __ ] so we like stopped recording we turned it on in the studio and it was just like hey
28:12
must it on a be oh I was just like what like Kendrick rapping over a West Coast be like that [ __ ] was crazy to me so it
28:17
was dope it showed the versatility of of Kendricks you know what I'm saying too but also like Drake man like Drake
28:23
Kendrick made Drake work you know what I'm saying like Drake's pen throughout this battle too was dope crazy was and
28:28
people often sleep on that and people often forget that last song that Drake put out after um not like us like part
28:35
yeah them bars in there like crazy bro like [ __ ] he was saying so like yeah it
28:41
was I as a fan of hip-hop I loved it you know I'm saying it was doe do you feel like you are battle let me not say
28:46
battle tested cuz you're still early in your career but do you feel like you would be prepared for that aspect of the
28:53
game to go from selflove to war oh yeah man you saying here's the thing like I have so many different types of Records
29:00
you know what I'm saying especially on this project you know from like a love myself record to like if you need to get
29:06
gritty we'll get gritty you know what I'm saying or even on some like radio [ __ ] stuff so like it's like we have whole whole different types of records
29:12
and just trying to be as versatile as we can so if it comes to it it we'll get to it cuz at heart I'm a true MC man you

with that because all you got to do is make sure that your music stay aligned with the human you become come on you
37:49
get what I'm saying so like what you what you rhymed about it at 18 you will not rhyme about at 25 if you stay within
