Man, ladies and gentlemen, they didn't know what to take of it when he first announced Big Three
0:07
A lot of folks said the same thing they said about hip-hop, HB, it wouldn't last, right
0:13
A lot of folks said, damn, man, they don't know what they're doing, don't make that investment
0:18
And ladies and gentlemen, years later, we still talking to one of the most successful businessmen
0:23
that ever come out of the music culture. Give it up for the one and only Ice Cube one more time
0:28
Ice Cube! Let's get it! Yeah, yeah. Cube, I didn't know if it was going – we didn't know what was going to happen
0:35
after, you know, the cancellation because of COVID in 2020, man. Were you concerned about it
0:43
It coming back, Big Three? Oh, you got to be concerned. You know what I mean
0:47
I'd be lying if I say I wasn't because we didn't know if the pandemic issue
0:54
was going to be a one-year lockdown, two-year lockdown, three years. We didn't know at the time
1:00
So we didn't know if we could sustain two years out of the public eye
1:07
So, yeah, we was concerned. What did you learn from the NBA when they created the bubble process
1:16
and they were able to kind of contain it to a certain extent
1:20
Did you guys feel like that was something, those procedures you would have to follow for this season
1:24
Well, we was talking about the bubble before the NBA actually did it
1:31
We was talking to Big Brother, the producers of that, and trying to create a Big Brother Big Three show
1:41
So we would have our players in a house, and instead of doing the Big Brother games that they do
1:48
they would play Big Three games to see who would advance, stay in the house, get kicked out, this, that, and the other
1:53
So we had started that process. We just couldn't. Everybody was scrambling in television and sports
2:02
So we couldn't get a network to lock in on that. And so, you know, we kind of put it to bed
2:09
Then, you know, NBA did they bubble in Orlando. It was cool
2:15
It worked out. You know, it was what they were supposed to do. Now we got an all playoff and championship games will air live on CBS
2:23
and stream on Paramount. How about that? That's Ice Cube, y'all. That's Cube, HB
2:30
This is the man who wrote Gangsta Gangsta, and now we got Big 3 on CBS streaming on Paramount, HB
2:39
How about that? That's crazy, and it's incredible. Congratulations once again, Cubist
2:44
How you doing? How you feeling? I'm great. Yeah, you too. You too, family
2:50
How does this work with Big 3? Me and my husband was actually sitting around talking about you and Big Three
2:56
because we love it. But we were wondering, do you guys actually have to go out
3:01
and recruit players and make offers to them? Or are you now at the point where players are coming to you and saying
3:09
yo, Q, I want to be down with you. Are you getting calls from agents? How does all of this work
3:15
It's a little of both at this point. Okay. People, you know, a lot of, you know
3:21
we've had over 100 players at our combine every year. And so there's only usually 20 to 30 spots
3:31
So that just tells you the demand that players have to get into the league
3:36
It's an amazing platform for them in their game. So players really want to play in the big three
3:42
but you know the bigger names the guys who you know who not sure if they want to
3:51
play or go on vacation a lot of them usually go on vacation in the summer
3:55
so you know you gotta get on the phone try to convince them
4:01
to play and that they would have a lot of fun you know in the big three so
4:07
it's a little of both it's a little of both um okay talk to us about what's coming up cube it's a big game saturday can you talk about what's
4:17
happening oh yeah you know we got the playoffs everybody playing for that doc j trophy you know I mean which is the name of our championship trophy We named it after Dr J
4:30
He's been in basketball ever since I've been a knee high to a horse fly
4:35
He's been in basketball. And so to, you know, have a trophy named after him was special
4:43
I'm glad we was able to do it. But we got – actually, his team is in the playoffs
4:47
So, Tri-State, you know, going after Trilogy, who's coached by Steven Jackson
4:57
You know, they got Jared Jacks. Tri-State got Nate Robinson. You know, so they got some players, man, that could really get down
5:07
And then we got, you know, the champs, which is, you know, Joe Johnson versus three-headed monsters
5:14
You know what I mean? So it's a great weekend of basketball
5:19
You know what I mean? Saturday, they jump off, 3 p.m. Eastern. It's going down
5:24
I like it, Q, man. I like it, man. You got the owner of the league on the radio show promoting the games
5:35
I don't think – we've never had Adam Silver on this show
5:41
we ain't never had cuban we had mark cuban on the show we ain't never had adam silver
5:48
what is your relationship what is the big three relationship now with the nba how has it evolved
5:54
um you know i think it's where it's always been you know they do what they do and we do what we do
6:04
So, you know, in a lot of ways, we're thankful that they haven't, you know, done anything publicly to derail or to, you know, knock us off course
6:19
It's not easy to invent a new professional sport and actually have success
6:26
Last time it was done was UFC. UFC was 20 years ago
6:31
So, you know, I don't know if they're just hoping we fail or go away or, you know, just looking at us and, you know, stealing a few of our ideas
6:45
You know, I just don't know really what they're up to. I just know we're doing what we do
6:51
We're a complementary league, if you ask me. We're not a competitive league
6:56
We're not trying to compete with the NBA. You know, they've been around for a long time
7:00
So we complimentary, you know, we, we, we take a time in the summer that's
7:06
you know, if you're not into baseball, you're not into golf or soccer
7:10
then you should be into the big three, uh, because we stopped right before football season starts
7:17
So it's perfect time for us. Okay. I wanted to ask you Q though, about some of the more, um
7:25
celebratory moments. Cause I know you said it's not really like a competition thing as much as a
7:30
complimentary but you had to feel good as a owner and somebody that went out boots to the ground
7:36
promoting this and campaigning for it because we were there like at the Barclay and I looked around
7:42
and it was like I want to say sold out or damn near sold out it was so many celebrities so many
7:49
people sitting courtside and just rooting for you and you were there with your wife and I just
7:54
thought it was dope did that I know you did a lot of work to get into that point but just when you
7:59
got home that night and sat back and looked at it that first year would you did it feel good
8:03
oh it felt great you know okay okay yeah that night you know what i'm saying but we
8:10
you know we had another game and this was that was our first game ever right he was going to 60
8:17
points so then so it took forever to get through the whole day and so we had to make changes and we
8:25
we came up with 50 points, which was a better, you know, game for everybody
8:32
Yeah, the flow. Uh-huh. Yeah, you know, so we had to make adjustments
8:36
So, you know, it's not really, you know, especially during the season
8:40
you don't really have time to pat yourself on the back. Like you can only do that after you know somebody done popped champagne and we done crowned another champion And then as a league we can you know pat ourselves on the back
8:56
you know, for a week or two. And then we got to go back to work because we got a lot of work
9:01
to do in the offseason too. So not yet, you know what I mean
9:06
We'll get there where we can, you know, we can just party
9:10
and, you know, it's rolling downhill. and right now it's just too much work to do
9:18
Ice Cube, man, he's here. I'm curious too, man. When you look at all the irons that you have on the different fires
9:29
it's like whether it's your production company, your filming company, your career as an artist, as a performing artist
9:40
your philanthropy work, your activism that you've done, the big three. Is that something you learned as you've gotten deeper into business
9:49
When we started, we was just writing songs and, oh, shit, they give you publishing for this
9:53
You never got the royalty, you know, but, you know, oh, wow, we're getting paid on stage for this, and that's in the beginnings
10:00
But now you're building businesses, right, all around. There's a different mindset to that
10:09
When you get into the process of where you're building businesses, you can't be so emotionally attached to them
10:16
You understand that it's a business. You create your projections. You create your business plan
10:20
How do you balance that, Q? How do you know that one business might need more of your hands-on, your influence than the other
10:28
Have you come across that conundrum? Oh, yeah. I mean, the thing is to never expect it to be easy
10:37
That's the key. You know, people think you get to a point and everything gets easy
10:43
But, no. You know what I mean? It's just you want something to work, you got to work it
10:50
I don't care about what you did. And most people don't care about what you did yesterday
10:54
They only care about what you did today and what you're going to do tomorrow. So you just can't expect it to ever be a point where you're just cruising
11:05
The minute you're cruising and you kick back and everything is taking care of itself is the minute things is probably going to start going bad
11:14
You know what I mean? Because you've got to man the ship. You've got to be, you know, the kind of general that's out front and not just in the background
11:26
So that's, I think, what I learned was, you know, everything you're working from scratch, you got to get it to a point where people love it and want to be a part of it and want to spend their time and their money or, you know, or just enjoy it from afar
11:46
You know what I'm saying? But everything is not going to – nothing is easy
11:52
And if it is, you know, you should be like a little
11:56
that should be a sign that, you know, maybe you're not looking at everything you need to be looking at
12:05
You know what I mean? You just got to stay – keep your grind on
12:09
Got to keep your grind on. Ice Cube is here. I'm curious. I'm going to go to these phone calls real quick
12:14
We're talking about the big three, ladies and gentlemen. It's going to be on CBS this Saturday
12:19
Make sure you watch it at 3 p.m. Eastern on CBS. Triplets versus Three-Headed Monsters
12:24
Tri-State versus Trilogy. Championship game is taking place Saturday, September the 4th
12:30
at the Atlantis Paradise Island where they treat you like you're – hey, man, if you ever go to that hotel, Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas
12:39
they treat you like royalty. I went there two years ago. Me and King Tech went out there, Q
12:45
They treated us like royalty. So you can get to kick it
12:50
That's what they're doing for the Big Three, man. They're giving us a lot of love
12:54
You know, we appreciate being able to take our players over there
12:59
to celebrate, you know, a great season and crown a champion. You know what I mean
13:04
That's what it's all about. And you know check out the Big Three this Saturday on CBS 3 p Eastern And next Saturday going to be our championship at the same time Same time So it a beautiful thing I mean I appreciate y for pumping up the league
13:23
We need this, you know what I'm saying? Because mainstream sports, you know how they look at us, do us
13:30
you know what I'm saying? It's a black thing. You wouldn't understand it. Some people would
13:34
You know what I mean? But we got to make sure we support each other and let them know that, you know, this league is here to stay
13:43
All black folks and white folks and other folks, make sure you support this league
13:47
This is Ice Cube. And if you want to get tickets, go to www.AtlantisBig3.com
13:53
That's AtlantisBig3.com. Cube, I'm curious, real quick, before you go, as I'm thinking about how successful you've been
14:01
And someone asked me a question recently because the conversation came up about, I want to say, the guy Daniel Craig said he doesn't believe in inheritance and that he wouldn't leave his money to his kids
14:16
You know, all the things that he set up. Q started laughing
14:24
Yeah. You know, that's funny. Yeah. What are your thoughts on that
14:29
Go ahead. I heard a dude tell his kids that don't worry about the money
14:36
Me and your mom are going to spend it all so y'all ain't got nothing to fight over
14:43
Wow. The cold world. That's crazy. That's funny. That's funny. But, you know, I don't think we can think like that, man
14:52
We got to pass it down, man. Yeah. You know what I mean? You got to build it and figure out how to, you know, pass the knowledge, whatever wealth, you know, even if it's just a house, to be able to pass it down and make sure they know how to keep and take care of it and don't just sell everything and blow the money
15:16
So I don't think we can think like that, man. You know, we got to help the next generation
15:23
just like the generation before us helped us. We don't have that luxury
15:29
We got to pass it down to give our kids that advantage. Mikey, I'm going to let you be the caller
15:33
What you want to say to Cube? Yo, yo, Grand Rising. Good morning, Sway
15:38
Good morning, Cube. Grand Rising, man. Good morning. Well, we can't say both
15:44
We got to say Grand Rising. Grand Rising, yeah. We can mourn another time
15:48
Go for it. there you go there you go grand rising grand rising i just want to give my respect man to the
15:54
og west coast legend ice cube man you you you're in the game man that's awesome that you're doing
16:01

16:06
going on i'm definitely gonna be tuning in brother check us out man you know it's a great game
16:11
And there's people you know, you know, players that we done grew up with watching
16:17
And just because the NBA done with them, that don't mean we should be done with them
16:22
Not at all. Right. Right. Yeah. And it's crazy. A lot of the guys playing the Big Three could still be playing in the NBA
16:29
That's the funny part. All right. Facts. That's facts. For sure. Thanks for the call, man
16:34
I appreciate it. Hey, Q, appreciate you, man. Give it up for us, Q. That's our family
16:38
Can't wait to see you in person, brother. Let's get it. Okay, Big 3 playoffs and championship games, man

17:01
So go to that Big 3 app, man, and vote for MVP, you know, this, that, and the other, man
17:08
Much love. The Big 3 app is awesome, too. Congratulations on whoever designed that app
17:13
