You know, I work for MTV as well, so I've had a chance to interview your dad a couple

of times you know and uh what an amazing man when the no line on the horizon album came out

uh the group was doing the tour the promo tour in the states and so i had to talk with your dad and

the rest of the group members from you too and it went so well he invited me to boston and they flew

me to boston have i don't know if i ever told this story flew me to boston and then i conducted a

discussion with a whole uh crowd of people and um then he invited me to ireland eve it never happened

what well if you had some i i would have known because it would have been a lot of fun it would

have been i i would like to uh re-invite you i mean i'm uh you you are invited you've got to

Before we get into this series, because of the parallels, I was always I was curious about you and your rise and you finding the field and you picking your passion, it being acting

How difficult or how easy has it been because of your lineage to really carve your own path

Was that important to you to make sure that you made your own mark and you wasn't just ushered in by your parents

Or did you like that kind of nepotism? I like the kind of neptism

You know, I mean, it would be a complete lie to say that it didn't help in a lot of ways

You know, as you pointed out, I went to Tisch, and there's so many great actors that I went to school with that had such a hard time finding an agent

You know, they had such a hard time booking an audition. And, you know, because there was interest in me because of my dad and everything, that was really easy for me to sort of get those connections

And I've had an agent since I was 17, so I knew how lucky I was when, you know, I had a call for, you know, a big audition

You know, it did get me in the door. but it's also a bit tricky to sort of, you know

it's harder for people to see you as you're an individual and they do compare you a lot

And I think it's also strange because my dad, you know, has been in the business for like 30, 40 years

and he knows everybody and so he knows a lot of Hollywood folk and, you know, some people can't really, you know

disassociate that that's their friend's daughter. So, yeah, it's tricky, but I've mainly been blessed with it, I have to say

You've done well with it. Your mother is an activist too and I trying to think of it I remember watching the documentary she narrated about Chernobyl years ago This was like decades ago And I was so interested in it being from California

And I remember hearing her voice. I didn't know who she was at the time

And as I did that research, I realized it was the same person. And she's dedicated her life to humanitarian issues, activism

People have been wondering whether or not she's going to even run for office. What was her thoughts

I mean, did you ever decide what is your passions in terms of that realm

I mean, did your mother ever want to try to drive you into that direction? Or have you ever had aspirations of going that route as well

Yeah, absolutely. I mean, it's something that just was a part of our life completely

You know, like I remember when my mom was going away to Chernobyl a lot and, you know

my parents going off to Africa and all the things that they do there

We were always sort of like put in the back seat and brought with them

So it was just sort of just a part of my life

And I've just been around those conversations. I remember when my dad was just even dreaming up the idea of red and one

And so that's just a natural thing that I think, you know, I'll definitely continue to be involved in

And my sister has a company. It's a tech startup. and she's heavily involved in activism

So it's sort of just around my life. And, yeah, I'll definitely continue to be involved in all of that

money right now at what age do you think just give me some parental advice being the being a child of

you know parents who are in entertainment who are globally known at what age do we cut off the

finances? Hmm. I mean, I don't, I, I, I, I think, I don't know. I don't want to have to have your

daughter mad at me. It sounds like she's got a steady job, which is pretty amazing. I mean

the one thing I've obviously never had to worry about that. I've been very fortunate that, you

know, I'll always know my parents, if anything ever happens, my parents have my back. But there

is a certain pride in making your own money and i think that's really important for a young person

to to experience especially if they grew up you know like like your daughter has um i i think

there's you know it it brings confidence um but i also don't want your daughter to be

to be upset that i that i told you to put her off you know i don't want to get in trouble

fame you know wanting to be in the industry imagining what it's like what it's possibly like

And you've been blessed, you know, to experience things through maybe your parents or then obviously breaking out, going to school, doing things on your own and fighting through your auditions and whatnot

But what would you say outside of that? Because a lot of times fame is not always cracked up to what is, you know, what people think it is

What outside of work was, what are some of the things that are most important to you

what are the things that are most important about about a career like this or or outside of outside

of because so many times people focus on the fame aspect of things but outside of fame and your job

and your career what are some of the things that are most important to you or do you have hobbies

outside of do you cook do you like to go hiking like what are some of the things that are important

to you maybe just chilling with your family yeah i mean i was lucky that i grew up in in dublin like

i grew up in ireland and irish people really don't care about fame at all so it was more like

embarrassing that i had a famous dad than than it was cool it wasn't celebrated um wow so yeah so i

i mean one thing that my parents definitely told me is like all of their friends that they came up

with that, you know, work with them now on their tours and, and part of their creative

thing is, you know, they were all their friends from, from high school

Like my parents met in high school. So they always sort of told us that, you know, friendships are, you know, so important and

to surround yourself with like a really good group of people. And so all of my friends are all my Irish friends from home

and that's kind of the one thing that makes me feel sane

when you can be in a business like this that can be quite superficial

My Irish friends will always sort of keep me grounded or they'll try to

Yeah but I think that important Like the people that are around you it like that the most important thing so what what if that the mentality in ireland what where did how did conor mcgregor become so

he's like he's like the spokesperson for over there now how did how does a person like that

exist at home do they turn it down when they come home yeah i don't know i haven't met conor mcgregor

I think he might have some extracurricular activities that, like, I wouldn't approve of

I don't really know what's going on with Conor McGregor. But, yeah, that's a whole

I think he's, like, an anomaly. You know what I mean? He's his own species

in yeah so uh eve this series obviously is based on on the book of the same name and um a lot of

times when you have an adaptation of a novel uh it can go either way sometimes they want you to read

the source material or sometimes they leave it up to the actors to sort of develop their own

portrayal of the characters what was it on behind her eyes like what was the process were you did

they ask you to read the book or was it were you kind of left to make up your own mind about that

i had a really interesting way of getting to know this story i mean the main thing about this story

is what everyone talks about is the twist um and i was actually shooting a different movie

and they sent me the audition and I didn't have any time to do it

and so I ended up having to do it in the middle of the night and I didn't read the script

They sent me all six scripts and I only read the first one so I had no idea what story we were telling

or the character that I was playing and so when I got on the Skype with the director

he kind of called me out on it. I tried to like bluff and say that I'd read the script

and he was like, I know you haven't because I saw your reading and that's not the character that we're looking for

And I said, you know, why? And he was like, because this is the twist

And so I was blown away by, you know, the twist. And I won't give it away because it's a spoiler

But I had, you know, it was a weird way of hearing about it

because most people had read the book. It's a really popular book. Everybody loves it

so I had to learn through Skype basically and then I went back once I got the job and read the book

and it's so good it's so it's so thrilling I highly highly suggest it and burn through it

um so that was sort of my process it was a bit it was a bit backwards

if you don't mind I just have one more question because you mentioned auditioning via Skype and

I have some friends who are actors and ever since you know everything shut down over the past year

pretty much all the auditions had to happen via zoom or people had to submit videos and that can

be tough when you're not in front of a casting agent or the director and they can actually see

your movements and read your you know your physical appearance and that sort of thing

do you have any tips for people who may find it a little difficult with recording their auditions

to send them in like do you have any sort of I don't know maybe tips on how to stand out on a

videotape yeah I mean I kind of like I do best actually on tape and I just learned like you can

if you go back and watch your performance you can you can kind of edit it and you at least you know

the performance that you're sending off so I would say like take time with it and like go back watch

your takes see what works see what doesn't and especially the zoom stuff I've had such a hard

time with that but I sort of practice the day before I film myself doing it and then I watch

it over and so that if anything happens like with any glitches on the computer or the wi-fi goes out

at least I know where to look and you know like how to play it because when you're acting with a

computer i mean it's impossible basically not acting um so yeah i would say just practice

Yeah, but the way it ended, it was like, ah, I wasn't, I was ready for season two

I'll start looking for the second book. um i just think it's just it's a such an intriguing plot twist to it and it's kind of

along the themes of a few things that we would talk about so i don't want to give up the plot

twist but you will never guess it how about that throughout the whole series you will never guess

and so i've spent a lot of time being the only girl um like on set with a bunch of old men so

this was the first time i'd had people like really my age there was me simona tom and rob and we're

all the same age it kind of felt like i was like back at school or something um but yeah we all we

you'll stay in touch. It's really nice. Well, let's talk about those, those old men

like you've worked with Sean Penn, Tom Hanks. The old men, they're pretty good

Steven Spielberg, you know, those old men just got to keep getting in the way. But you make a

point about, you know, being surrounded by a bunch of men. And I read one point you were

really considering quitting the energy for that reason because of it being male-dominated

Is that true? Yeah, I just kind of had a bit of an existential crisis

You know, I got into acting when I was a teenager, and, you know, I was still a girl

And then I sort of grew up and had all these different experiences on sets

and I just started to get bored or tired of, you know, the same kind of character coming up

in every movie. And, you know, it's sort of the girl that's there to look good for the men

or to please the male audience. And I just, I really was sort of tired of that

And, yeah, I like to joke that I'm going into early retirement a lot

but this time I kind of meant it. And then Me Too came around

I mean, not to get, like, too heavy. I know it's a morning show over there, but Me Too came around

and things kind of changed. And, you know, all these new roles came out for women

They started putting women in the center of the stories and making them really interesting, nuanced, dynamic, you know, characters

And I've seen, you know, it's been like night and day what I've seen

The scripts that I'm reading now are really great. So I'm glad I didn't quit

child psychology so maybe like i don't know become like a therapist or something i had no idea
