that's a song called party continues
0:02
mhm that's my Mantra in life the party
0:05
continues word every breath we take
0:08
should be a celebration cuz the party
0:10
continues the party called life that's
0:12
off an EP called
0:14
Phoenix and that EP is one of a few
0:18
projects that our next guest has put out
0:20
independently has done it on her own
0:23
it's something to be said about
0:24
commitment Tracy G something to be said
0:27
about dedication there's something to be
0:29
said about about confidence faith belief
0:33
something to be said about all of that
0:35
you don't just sometimes make it that's
0:37
right it don't just happen like that you
0:39
go through a journey you go through
0:41
trials and tribulations you go through a
0:44
growth process a metamorphosis you try
0:46
to figure out your voice you want to
0:48
figure out your team who you going to
0:50
work with all of these different
0:52
elements play a part in your success in
0:55
your journey and when I see
0:58
folks they say you can't judge a book by
1:01
his cover this is um case in point right
1:04
here when I see folks like our next
1:06
guests who I've seen in the hallways and
1:09
I've seen in the office over the years
1:13
and I always make a note to shout her
1:15
out hey Bri what's popping volume 20 yes
1:20
always sneak up on her when she's trying
1:21
to work tap her on her
1:24
shoulder or come to her desk and at one
1:28
point she expressed to me that she was
1:30
an artist and I had no idea and she sent
1:33
me her music and we pontificated on it a
1:37
bit and decided that we were going to
1:38
gather and have a conversation that's
1:41
right and we finally had that
1:43
conversation and I learned that she
1:44
truly is a fully dedicated artist who
1:47
has put in work has written songs has
1:50
written her own songs has worked with
1:52
people who have been in the business um
1:54
and has uh really really just been doing
1:57
a lot of great work and I invited her to
1:59
the show because of it because I believe
2:02
she deserves all the opportunity that
2:04
she can get please welcome Bria Sheree
2:07
to the show Bria Shere hey Bria hey
2:11
what's good what's good CU thank you
2:13
thank you for having me thank you Bri
2:16
wonderful introduction well it you know
2:19
it came from the heart nothing I said
2:21
was any what was the LIE there was no
2:23
lie exactly right all facts right and
2:26
I'm very impressed by you you know um
2:28
because most people a lot of times folks
2:31
who work in these tech companies like um
2:34
like Pandora or Sirius XM or apple music
2:37
or Spotify there's a lot of artists
2:40
there's a lot of creatives oh absolutely
2:42
that want to work in that environment to
2:44
see what opportunities may come from it
2:47
right exactly is that that's part of was
2:49
that part of your reason for working
2:51
wanting to be around the music industry
2:53
to work for a place like this yeah it it
2:56
was I mean from the beginning I knew I
2:58
started music when I was three I started
3:00
learning piano I started playing my mom
3:02
got me the the the little mini keyboard
3:04
and we were tinkering with that and she
3:06
was like she she has something here and
3:08
so she put me into um the classical
3:11
lessons and getting the the proper
3:12
training to learn the theory learn piano
3:15
learn music so from that day forward I
3:18
knew that music was what I wanted to do
3:21
and so as as I was studying the great
3:24
studying all these these amazing artists
3:26
I look up to and I was like where you
3:28
know how can I get in into the industry
3:30
cuz back then the '90s or 2000s it's was
3:33
completely different to what it is today
3:35
and so I was like all right I'm going to
3:36
have to go to school you know I I got to
3:38
I got to still pay bills and go to
3:40
college go to high school all that and
3:42
so when I was looking into broadcasting
3:45
we were looking at all the different
3:47
schools and uh HBCU it was all different
3:50
opportunities for me and I was trying to
3:52
go into to college um in the music
3:55
department as an artist but there was a
3:57
lot of qualifications and application
3:59
and it it just it didn't work out for me
4:01
that route and so that's when I was like
4:04
I'll I'll do broadcasting so when I um
4:06
was in school at Liu out in Nassau
4:09
County Long Island yeah Long Island
4:12
Strong Island Strong Island yep that's
4:15
that's where I got my start with radio I
4:17
I had my own show on campus what was
4:19
your show called it was called flavor
4:22
flavor flavor did you spell that with a
4:24
a yes I did okay give me a sound what
4:27
did you sound like how how did you open
4:29
the mic what would you you say I'd be
4:30
like yo it's that flavor we would you
4:33
know just go
4:35
from yes yeah I like that but that's
4:38
another way of using your voice exactly
4:40
and so especially there it's a pwi so
4:43
you know I was playing hip-hop I was
4:45
playing R&B like '90s all you know to
4:48
the current music that was out and the
4:50
students loved it and so I ended up
4:52
becoming a program director for the
4:54
station and yeah so that was my way in
4:58
yeah I'm serious
5:00
damn Bri I didn't know all of this yeah
5:02
for real and then you became a program
5:04
director M yep right after college I
5:06
applied here it took a while you know
5:08
the process is long but you know we got
5:11
in and here we are and now I'm I'm doing
5:14
um I'm in the programming department
5:16
where I'm the um coordinator for sound
5:18
42 Drake's Channel SoundCloud radio uh
5:22
the blend um I'm doing it's a lot going
5:25
on it's a lot going on Bria Sheree is
5:27
her name
5:29
3 3 4 five citizens you know how we do
5:32
this a new artist right so get to know
5:34
her now so couple years from now when
5:36
she popping and blowing up and getting
5:38
Awards y'all can say you got a chance to
5:41
talk to her ask her smart questions 888
5:43
742
5:44
3345 you know what I'm really
5:46
appreciating about you Bria is it's a
5:48
number of things one uh I love a
5:51
multi-dimensional woman I love a woman
5:54
that can tap into her many different
5:56
layers and understands that she doesn't
5:59
just have one gift to be opened you know
6:02
and like sway said um you're a Pianist
6:04
you're a singer you're a writer you're
6:07
also a dancer I'm really interested in
6:10
the writing aspect you know because that
6:13
allows you to be a Storyteller a truth
6:15
teller and also writing is a healing
6:17
practice for real as well because it
6:20
requires self-reflection you know and
6:22
imagining a new world can you take us
6:24
into your relationship with the pen and
6:27
where that started cuz I know at 3 is
6:29
when the piano started piano but when
6:31
did the writing begin that's a good
6:33
question um I would say wow the writing
6:37
began through Co not through n no I'm
6:40
sorry High School like creative writing
6:42
classes I took those as like an elective
6:45
and I was like I was really into writing
6:46
poetry and and trying to I would even as
6:49
a kid in elementary school I would write
6:51
like they we do the book reports yes of
6:53
course I would write four page book
6:55
reports oh wow damn while the kids were
6:58
like you know even even just stories
7:00
like it would be pages long the teacher
7:02
was like tell my mom like yo she's
7:03
really writing like this this is crazy
7:06
and so it just stem from there and then
7:08
as a teen I got you know into really
7:11
developing my voice and I was like you
7:12
know I need to really just start writing
7:14
more and just you know it just came
7:16
naturally from that young age you know
7:19
so it's like it it's therapeutic like
7:21
you said I love being able to just put
7:24
my emotions down and put the melody to
7:26
it and then help help it having those
7:28
music that music help people and you
7:31
know hearing what they say like yo this
7:32
song really got me through something or
7:34
this made me feel really good so you
7:36
know it's just all from a young age you
7:38
got to really nurture the kids word you
7:40
got to nurture the kids um you you've
7:43
done this for a minute I brought up uh I
7:45
believe I brought up before the music
7:46
the EP um and I brought up Phoenix um
7:49
but let's talk about that first one
7:51
before the music okay um you were able
7:54
to at that time connect with an artist
7:56
by the name of Donnie clang yes Donnie
7:58
clang I
8:00
from Making the Band cuz I was working
8:02
on MTV at the time right so I used to
8:05
interview Donnie clang and all them
8:07
making the band
8:08
and and he went solo right uh well how
8:13
did you met him at some point what was
8:15
that like I met him in 20 between the
8:18
end of 2016 2017 um I was looking for
8:22
artist development um because I knew I
8:24
needed you know some more fine tuning
8:27
and I knew a lot of people in the
8:29
industry that felt I wasn't they had
8:30
their own opinions like oh you're not
8:32
ready you're not this you're not that I
8:33
was like I know I have something here
8:35
and so I was just looking around online
8:38
just trying to see like what's in New
8:39
York that does Arts development you know
8:41
and I came across his website he has a
8:44
studio in Long Island it's called Loft
8:46
Sound Studio and I was like let me just
8:49
Reach Out call them uh set up a time to
8:52
talk to them um it's Al also his best
8:54
friend Matthew um as well so when I went
8:57
there he had you know it was a different
9:00
um Studio at the time was you know he's
9:01
in newer place in in Long Island but I
9:04
met him and I was like I just spoke to
9:07
him I I just was really really real I
9:09
was like you know this is what I want to
9:10
do I've been wanting to do this forever
9:12
like I just need somebody to just
9:14
believe in me maybe work with me a
9:15
little bit he was like okay fine like
9:17
let me hear you sing and so I sung a
9:19
Mary J blig song share my world and oh
9:23
wow and then after that he was like let
9:25
let's get to work we started working and
9:28
he he heard you sing and said let's get
9:29
to work yeah for real you you sang which
9:31
song was it share my
9:33
world H H could you share a bit of share
9:38
my world want some water right there
9:40
well if you do we'll play your single
9:43

12:31
welcome to the tribe so thank you sir I
12:35
I was I was on break man I had to call
12:38
in um that is a really really great song
12:42
I just want to say things happen for a
12:45
reason just keep on going and you're
12:47
gonna be blessed Queen thank you so much
12:49
I appreciate that Travis you're a good
12:51
guy man have a great day at work man
12:53
you're super citizen you know what I and
12:56
when I listen to your story and we we
12:58
skipped over for this part but a lot of
13:00
people told you what they believe you
13:02
couldn't be MH who they believe you
13:04
would never reach right these places and
13:07
we've all gone through this yeah I know
13:10
Tracy's gone through it I've gone
13:12
through it uh Jake the kiss has gone
13:15
through it I was once told by um a woman
13:19
at a engineering school that I went to
13:23
following my partner Tech around and
13:26
they had a radio Division I never even
13:28
thought about doing radio and I and she
13:29
said well what do you want to do I'll go
13:31
check out the radio department and the
13:33
woman told me after I kind of auditioned
13:36
that I would never ever do radio and I
13:39
don't have the voice for it I should
13:41
look for something else Bri I'm Hall of
13:44
Fame now exactly you know what I mean on
13:47
that but that was my fuel like don't
13:49
tell me what I'm not going to do that's
13:51
the wildest right yeah the wildest
13:54
craziest thing this lady said to me wow
13:56
what was your F why did you not let that
13:59
break you how did you not let that
14:00
discourage you when you had so many
14:02
people telling you you're not ready your
14:05
voice not ready the music's not ready I
14:08
know what they say yeah they say a lot
14:11
how did that not break did it break you
14:13
did you have those moments where you was
14:15
like am I doing the right thing I had
14:17
those moments where I felt like maybe I
14:19
need to just fall back and I came very
14:22
close to it like relatively recently
14:24
like the last couple years I was like I
14:26
I probably need to just step back cuz
14:28
it's just were just not aligning but I
14:31
think what kept me going was my faith
14:34
was my family support um as well as like
14:38
I said that's my dream it's been my
14:40
dream forever guys like literally I
14:42
would study Aliyah I studi Janet I
14:44
studied Whitney all these people I
14:46
looked up to them and I was like I I got
14:48
to be like that one day you know so that
14:52
drive that music just never left me I
14:54
come from a musical background a
14:55
spiritual background as well um my great
14:58
aunt was was a a Powerhouse vocalist she
15:01
was on Broadway for many years um I I
15:04
have so my grandfather was a manager for
15:07
uh jazz artist Billy Einstein so many so
15:11
much right so much history there and so
15:13
it's like when you when you come from
15:15
that it inspires you to do just as great
15:18
as what they did in your in your um
15:20
influences as well so yeah yeah and you
15:22
have newer artists as well who have had
15:25
quite the rocky road into becoming like
15:28
their own solo artist I'm thinking about
15:30
money long who we had on the show
15:31
recently who's written for so many
15:33
artists including Rihanna and now we see
15:36
her soaring as her own entity um another
15:38
one of my faves Victoria Monae who we
15:41
know was behind the scenes for quite a
15:43
long while you know so sometimes there's
15:46
a difference between being a seed that
15:48
blooms into a flower and being a seed
15:50
that blooms into a tree you know what I
15:52
mean and so that tree is going to
15:54
require a lot more time but it doesn't
15:57
mean that you should stop watering mhm
15:59
yeah you have to just keep going cuz you
16:01
just never know and when Victoria won I
16:03
was cheered I was like oh my
16:05
finally I feel like y'all need to write
16:07
together after what Tracy just said that
16:09
was very poetic right there you know
16:12
what right it might be a thing there Bri
16:14
sh uh we got let me do another caller
16:16
Carlos is funny you brought up those
16:19
Inspirations Carlos what is North
16:20
Carolina Carlos what you wanted to say
16:22
hey Carlos man hey man man peace peace
16:25
all man first of all Man the song is
16:27
refreshing is is different right like I
16:31
I'm glad you're not following the trend
16:32
you're creating one right but but I I
16:36
ironically you said Janet was one of
16:38
your inspiration and that's who I hear
16:40
right it's just so much like Janet
16:43
Jackson which we haven't heard that
16:45
sound in a minute and that's why I say
16:47
it's refreshing man I really appreciate
16:49
your music it's it's a breath of fresh
16:51
air thank you so much that's so kind of
16:54
you so sweet thank you wow no problem
16:56
you got to see her blushing up here
16:57
Carlos you got see
17:00
I mean that like she I like the fact
17:02
that she set she set high high goals for
17:04
herself you know yeah man it's real man
17:06
Lo we appreciate you make sure you
17:08
follow her Bria Shere c h e r
17:10
iore okay you're a citizen brother wa a
17:14
all right um what's next for you what's
17:16
next oo cuz you can't you can't stop now
17:19
no I'm I'm still I'm still going I got a
17:21
show coming up um at the end of this
17:23
month um April 20 I going to get the
17:27
right date for that in New York yeah
17:29
it's going to be downtown 420 no not 420
17:32
it's April 27th it's going to be uh the
17:35
new the New York headliner is going to
17:37
