i grew up in northern california

and we we had never saw um

anybody that was you know we i had never

been around at least knowingly

um folks who were gay um and i never saw

a portrayal of a

character that was gay on mainstream tv

like that

and it seemed like it just came out of

the blue but we learned so much from

jody you know and i'm just curious

when you took on that role how did they

present it to you and was jody always

meant to be gay

yeah he always was and that was you know

when i

was offered the part i did a lot of soul

searching about

you know is this the right thing to do

no one had been

a recurring character in a in a national

show

on television before there had been i

think one or two movies dealing with the

subject

but you know to do it week in and week

out i had to

make sure that we did it right and and

that we did it respectfully and that we

were

uh honest in our portrayal of it in a

comedy

you know and um and i met with susan

harris who was the

creator and one of the true geniuses

sway that i ever really met

in in the business she wrote the first

68 episodes all by herself

um for a big cast if you remember and

you know to to do that at that time was

um there was
4:34
fraught with tension but uh to to just
4:37
to make sure that was

it was right and we got off a little bit

of a rubbery start but we

we really gained momentum and integrity

as the season went on

um and then you know we were there four

years

and at one point jody

had a one-night stand with a woman and

he ends up fathering a baby

and so the the the woman takes him to

court

um to sue for custody and

they did a poll at the time who do you

want to get the baby and

it was resounding that jody should get

the child so i thought that was the

great victory

um for the character at the time was

that america trusted him

with with with jody absolutely

you did an excellent job man did you get

hit on a lot by guys after that though

and have integrity about it but um

it was it was a rough experience at

times but of a really fantastic one

because i had the support of the of an

amazing cast

um richard mulligan and catherine damon

robert guillaume who played benson and

we became great friends and and we had a

really great talk

um bob was was uh

you know an enormously talented man

character that he was playing

um he was just so

dedicated to getting it right because he

was he was playing a servant for

rich white people yeah and

and he benson was really along with jody

they were the most

normal ones in the cast you know what i

mean they were the ones that had the

most integrity

and we had a really great talk once and

he said an interesting thing to me we

talked about he said you know we're both

playing minorities

and so we have a real responsibility to

just you know keep fighting for what is

he talked me through it and it was like

the first time somebody just like really

was like there with me and guided me and

safe and and i learned that like you can

on your partner you can look at your

partner and know that it's gonna be okay

in the amount of time that we've known

him he's the uncle i always wanted the

male figure in my life that i always

to just you know steer me in the right

work so well together and

and becomes a beautiful relationship

so he kept getting in

right in front of the camera right

alongside the camera sometimes so it was

where i needed to look and i just sort

of started to lose a little bit and she

she talked me down and and it was

basically like you know stop

barking stop barking you know go back

go back easy i'll take care of them and

she talked to the guy and and then he

it was you know when you're in a

high-pressure situation we got a 100

and and one guy who's not part of the

almost ruins what you're doing then then

comfort somebody while they're dealing

with this because really your hands are

tied and there's

i hate to say but there's nothing that

can be done there's no surgery right no

pills it's really just about making them

comfortable

um while this you know disease
16:16
progresses and
16:17
you know mr crystal you you've
16:19
unfortunately lost some people who we
16:21
were all huge fans of with
16:22
gregory hines and of course robin
16:25
williams and i just wanted to know
16:27
how did those experiences dealing with
16:29
that loss
16:30
strengthen the relationships that you
16:32
have with people coming up now such as
16:34
tiffany haddish
16:35
and other people in the industry that
16:37
you work with
16:39
well both would incredibly close friends
16:44
uh and their losses are still profound
16:47
to me
16:48
um uh and
16:51
and and this this character really was
16:53
based on a relative of mine
16:55
and and you know their losses makes you
16:58
just appreciate
16:59
um your friends that are still with you

even more um
17:04
and and robin's loss you know to
17:07
uh a disease that he had of lewy bodies

um was particularly painful because um
17:15
you know it was just uh nothing that
17:18
that you could do about it
17:20
and and gregory had died years before
17:22
and

you know these you know when you lose

your friends it's a really
17:27
it's an excruciating thing that you just
17:30
have to absorb the body shot and and
17:32
move forward

and and try to make other people's lives

better

including your own and and this

character really was was

uh um inspired by a relative of mine an

aunt that i was taking care of um
17:46
with the onset of dementia she was a
17:49
novelist
17:50
and she wrote seven novels

and was an editor for the book of the
17:55
month club and she came to me one day
17:58
and she was my last surviving relative

and said i'm i'm losing my words

i'm and she was you know fearful

and panicked about it and um and all we
18:12
could do was just
18:13
you know as as what happens in the movie

um

take care of her throughout the process

you know and
18:19
and um charlie in the movie is
18:22
functioning

pretty well he's still working um
18:26
he's he's functioning on a television
18:28
show that's not
18:29
unlike snl uh he's
18:32
he's exercising he's but it's it's
18:35
starting to encroach on his uh ability

to work

and and she recognizes that in in a

really interesting

scene um where he's being honored
18:47
and he can't remember the names of the

people that are on stage with him and
18:50
she sees that
18:51
and that's the key point in the movie

don't you think tiffany when she

the whole the whole thing changes to i'm

there for you no matter what you're

going through

uh i'll i'm i'm there for you so that's

it brings out a compassion in in

in her and and she ends up you know

up a big part of uh a big break in her

to to do the right thing to take care of

somebody who

who actually helped her you know so

it's a beautiful story an amazing story

there was a scene i don't want to tell

family there was his

you know kids that he wasn't getting

along well with and it was

it was his son and his daughter and his

son-in-law and his granddaughter to make

um uh wow this is a powerful movie and

that you said it's about a friendship

because it brings back a lot of memories

because my grandmother um passed away in

of dementia and it was so bad that

my father was the type of person that

liked to party have friday night parties
21:25
i'm a 70s baby so we always had fun

so eventually my grandmother got sick
21:32
and we wound up finding out that's what
21:34
it was
21:35
my father had to alter his life we had
21:38
to alter our life
21:40
um he would be home at by
21:43
four three o'clock in the afternoons
21:45
doors are locked by sticks because my
21:47
grandmother would try to get out the
21:48
house
21:49
she had we had to paint back then you
21:52
had the baseboard heating with the knob
21:54
so we had to paint the knob red so she
21:57
wouldn't turn it past that
21:59
to keep it up we had to hide the knives

and everything in the house
22:04
it's it's it's a very
22:08
i just don't know how to say it but it's
22:10
one of those feelings that i wouldn't
22:12
wish for anybody to have health-wise

because
22:15
it would really all to your life and
22:18
they always regress
22:19
back to their younger age and one
22:22
particular day i remember to this day we
22:24
were sitting in the kitchen
22:26
and my grandmother kept looking at me
22:29
and grinding
22:30
and i'm like uh grandma what's wrong

and she looked at my father and was like
22:36
who is this black and that you have
22:39
sitting here at my kitchen table
22:42
who is she she thought that i was
22:45
actually my father's girlfriend

and she thought my grandmother being
22:51
thought my father was her very first
22:53
husband

not realizing that that was my dad
22:58
her son and i was my dad's daughter

so she literally tried to attack me

and we had to let her know grandma hold

on this is your baby this is robin this

is who you grew up this is who you

raised

so it's it's very hard and then she
23:17
wound up passing in 2002 and they wanted

to do

studies on her but my father just
23:23
wouldn't allow that to happen just let

her pass that piece and we brought her
23:27
home

and she finally passed away in 2002.
