Give that young lady a round of
0:02
applause.
0:04
Wow. Nina Simone [applause]
0:07
on American Idol.
0:11
Tell you about a story of a young lady
0:14
by way of Maryland.
0:16
Come from a musical family. Heather B,
0:18
>> right?
0:19
>> Whole family is gifted.
0:21
>> People done played in the church, band,
0:23
sang in the choir. They done done it
0:25
all.
0:26
>> They done it all.
0:27
>> She couldn't help herself. She was
0:30
raised around gospel and soul music. I
0:32
already know the story, right?
0:34
[laughter]
0:35
>> Used to wake up on Saturdays with that
0:38
pork frying on the skillet. Why it got
0:40
to be pork? [laughter]
0:43
>> We ain't even eat that pork though.
0:44
>> Y didn't eat the pork. Told you. Why?
0:46
Why it had to be pork? [laughter]
0:49
>> Pork made the scene sound better, right?
0:51
You can smell it, right?
0:52
>> You do chicken.
0:53
>> Okay. Y'all did chicken. Okay. They wake
0:54
up on that Saturday morning [laughter]
0:57
to the smell of that fried chicken.
0:59
>> Yeah.
1:00
>> With some just gritty soul or gospel
1:03
playing in the background.
1:04
>> Sure.
1:04
>> Right. Sure.
1:05
>> Go to bed at night, your parents
1:07
partying in the house, you falling
1:08
asleep to some good old music. Right.
1:11
>> And then you absorb all that music and
1:13
it starts to inform you and then you
1:16
realize you can sing. Ladies and
1:18
gentlemen, Gabby Simone is here. She's
1:21
greatness already destined.
1:23
She's success in living form.
1:25
>> Yeah,
1:26
>> she shows so so much range on American
1:28
Idol. I was happy to say yes. She's
1:31
available. Let's bring her on the show.
1:33
Welcome to Sway in the Morning with
1:34
Heather B and Tracy G. Gabby. Give it up
1:37
for Gabby Simone.
1:40
[cheering]
1:40
>> Thank you.
1:42
>> You know what I like about you is we
1:45
bumped into you in the hallway
1:47
>> and you are yourself any room you go
1:50
into. Huh.
1:50
>> Thank you. I'm I try to be.
1:52
>> Yeah. I try to be, you know, I can't be
1:54
nobody else but myself.
1:56
>> So, I I definitely try to come in,
1:58
>> you know, with just like a a genuine
2:00
spirit, you know, cuz
2:02
>> everybody's fake, you know, this is LA
2:04
sometimes is a lot of fake energy and
2:06
and um I'm not from from around here,
2:09
you know, and we Baltimore, you know, we
2:11
real raw and authentic. So, I just try
2:13
to bring that everywhere, you know what
2:15
I mean?
2:16
>> Absolutely. No, that's a good quality to
2:18
have. I ain't from around here neither,
2:20
so I get it. Oh, [laughter] they they
2:22
faking Baltimore, too, though.
2:23
>> Wow.
2:24
>> Don't get you a You ain't been on in the
2:26
right parts.
2:27
>> Well, okay. What's the right parts of
2:28
Baltimore?
2:29
>> My parts is the right part.
2:31
>> What [laughter] part of what part of
2:32
Baltimore?
2:33
>> I'm from uh West Baltimore.
2:35
>> West Baltimore. Went to school, raised
2:36
the whole nine.
2:38
>> Uh what kind of um But what is your
2:40
musical journey like? How did you know
2:41
you wanted to sing?
2:43
>> I mean, like you said, I I grew up in a
2:45
musical family. My dad is a singer. I
2:47
say this all the time, but he's my
2:49
favorite singer. If if if if anybody has
2:52
heard him before, they would say like
2:54
his voice is just super clear and crisp
2:56
and clear. And um he's a pastor, too.
2:58
So, you just feel everything, you know,
3:00
he he sings. So, my dad definitely
3:03
inspired me to sing. My brothers and my
3:05
sisters, they sing. And um I just always
3:08
I thought it was a normal thing. I
3:10
thought everybody could sing. You know,
3:11
you grow up in church, anybody can be on
3:13
a choir, everybody doing praise and
3:15
worship, everybody just out here
3:16
singing. So, I'm like, "Oh, everybody
3:18
could do this." until you know I get out
3:20
in the world and it's just a little
3:21
tonedeaf some tonedeaf people out
3:23
[laughter] there.
3:24
>> What do you mean?
3:26
>> That ain't cool. Heather Gabby
3:28
[laughter] just met us.
3:28
>> I read a little note earlier. You got a
3:30
little something.
3:31
>> There you go. Gabby,
3:32
>> she said it in the church way so you
3:34
wouldn't feel bad so you could
3:35
[laughter] come back on Sunday.
3:36
>> No, you can be in the back of the the
3:38
the choir row. You know back [laughter]
3:41
but that's my role. Like Heather will
3:43
tell you all the various people I've
3:46
sang background for.
3:47
>> Wow. Cynthia and Revo came here.
3:50
>> Wow.
3:50
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Look at your eyes now.
3:52
Like Okay. [laughter]
3:54
>> Yeah. Yeah. That was Cynthia. Yes.
3:56
>> No. I got here myself.
3:58
>> Okay. Melanie. Fiona.
4:00
>> Okay.
4:00
>> Okay. Look at that. Look at
4:02
>> You didn't do good with Melanie though.
4:04
>> You Cynthia, you did good. She could
4:06
pull that up. I just want her to know
4:08
the truth while she
4:09
>> torch. Pull up Cynthia.
4:10
>> You see, you went straight to Cynthia.
4:12
>> I need your resume. Like, [laughter]
4:13
>> you need my resume.
4:14
>> I need video proof though.
4:16
You need video proof. We got that torch
4:18
[laughter] to store here.
4:19
>> Yeah, it's torch. I'm looking now.
4:21
>> Okay. I like that. I like that. I I like
4:24
that, Gabby. Fortunately, I saw your
4:25
video proof, right, [laughter]
4:28
which is which was incredible. The my
4:30
all challenge. Um that really catapulted
4:33
you, right? Would you say?
4:34
>> Yeah. You know, that was actually one of
4:36
the videos. But um before that I did um
4:40
during 2022 like the pandemic during the
4:42
pandemic um right before 2020 sorry
4:44
right before I graduated high school um
4:47
I I went viral off of a video that um
4:50
they have the range was doing a
4:51
challenge
4:52
>> and you know the challenges was big
4:53
during that time during the pandemic.
4:55
Everybody on their phones everybody
4:56
locked in the house. Yeah. So I did um
4:59
song Missy Elliot challenge and I did uh
5:02
Aaliyah Care for You.
5:03
>> Yeah.
5:03
>> And it went crazy. I was about 17, 18
5:06
and I went from 3,000 followers to like
5:09
30,000 followers in a week. And that was
5:13
really my start. That that's when I
5:14
knew, okay, this is this is real. I
5:16
could I could do this as a career. Like
5:18
people are watching. I could I could do
5:20
this. I have, you know, a few fans now.
5:22
So, um, and they have the range, you
5:25
know, he was just always doing
5:27
challenges. I started to do more
5:28
challenges. And, um, my Mariah Carey,
5:32
she posted it on her story. she reposted
5:34
it and stuff like that. And um yeah, I
5:37
just think social media is just like a
5:39
big deal now. And you know, pushing
5:41
yourself on there, especially back in
5:43
2020, which is a big big deal.
5:45
>> The Mariah is gigantic. Like the
5:48
obviously um Miss Ellia Aaliyah, of
5:51
course, you know, you said that
5:52
catapulted you for sure. That's your But
5:54
Mariah in particular because she's
5:56
tough. She doesn't like people singing
5:58
her songs. She's notoriously unhappy
6:01
anytime she sees somebody singing her
6:03
songs. No, she like leave my songs
6:06
alone.
6:06
>> Absolutely. And so for her to do that,
6:09
you had to have had that feeling inside
6:11
like maybe I'm on to something. But
6:14
coming from a family with people in
6:15
church and your dad being a pastor, um
6:19
you know, we hear these stories all the
6:20
time. You know, don't go this route, go
6:22
this route. You you sing for the Lord
6:24
and I understand that as well. But did
6:26
you have the support of your family?
6:28
Absolutely.
6:29
>> That's dope.
6:29
>> My parents are extremely So, first of
6:32
all, I'm the youngest of eight.
6:33
>> So, yes. Wow. So, they done they done
6:36
been through it all with my siblings and
6:39
you know, they done they they went
6:40
through the strict church, the not
6:42
wearing um pants and all of that. Like
6:45
my si my sisters, my older sisters, they
6:46
didn't wear pants and stuff. We
6:48
Sabbathke keepers, no pork, no going out
6:51
after 8, you know, on Friday when the
6:53
sun come down, you know, like we they
6:55
went through all of that. But by the
6:56
time, you know, I came up and my my
6:58
brothers, you know, who are around
7:00
closer to my age, they were, you know,
7:02
less strict.
7:03
>> Got it.
7:04
>> And they they understood, they learned
7:06
from their mistakes. And that's why I
7:07
love my parents so much. They they
7:08
understood, you know, what happened with
7:10
my older siblings and they never ever
7:13
treated us that way.
7:14
>> So when I went when I wanted to do R&B,
7:17
um, which I always told them, you know,
7:19
I probably won't be singing gospel,
7:21
honestly. I feel like I can reach more
7:23
people, you know. I feel like I can just
7:26
reach more people like everything in the
7:28
church, you know. I I just don't want to
7:29
stay in one place, you know? I don't
7:31
want to stay in a church. I feel like
7:32
it's so many more souls to reach, you
7:35
know, than people in the church. And my
7:36
family, they understood. My my parents,
7:38
they always support me. They I have a
7:40
little some runchy songs that I let my
7:43
parents listen to. And my father, the
7:44
most song, my father loves the most
7:47
runchiest song that I have. [laughter]
7:49
Like, you know, my manager, he knows my
7:52
father is always going off. People be
7:53
like, "Where's that one song? When you
7:55
putting that out?" I'm like, "Dad, I
7:56
don't even know why you're [laughter]
7:58
even listening to this. You wasn't even
8:00
supposed to be listening to this." But
8:02
no, they they're extremely supportive.
8:04
My siblings, I love them. I couldn't ask
8:06
for a better, more supportive family.
8:08
>> This is the first time in a long time
8:10
we've watched American Idol and and I
8:12
would have to say because of you and
8:14
Kobe, you know, we we we watch. It's
8:17
just something, you know, after a while
8:18
you feel like you know the formula, you
8:20
stay out of it. But I think this year's
8:22
group of talent was worth watching. So
8:24
congratulations and it's good to see you
8:27
come out on this side of it and have
8:28
music out and whatnot. It was great.
8:30
Really dope. Really dope.
8:31
>> Gabby Simone.
8:33
>> Really good season.
8:34
>> Yeah, it was good. It was a great
8:35
season. And even behind the scenes,
8:37
everybody, we were all friends. We were
8:40
>> Wasn't that Wasn't that competitive
8:41
feeling going on?
8:43
>> It felt like you felt like a group of
8:45
people who wanted the same thing. Like
8:47
we were just we we were competing. We
8:49
knew somebody had to win. We knew people
8:51
were getting eliminated, but it was more
8:53
more fun than than anything.
8:55
>> Good, good, good.
8:56
>> Yeah, man. Um, I'm gonna let I want to
8:58
let Tracy and and Mike Muse jump in, but
9:00
before we do that,
9:01
>> I think Gabby Simone is here. She got a
9:03
new single. It's called Complicated.
9:05
Working on her new album as well. We'll
9:07
run that back again to torch in a
9:09
minute. You can follow her at Gab BB Ys
9:12
A M O N E. I think it's important that
9:14
us singers really stay encouraging to
9:16
each other and just inspire each other
9:18
as singers. And so I just wanted to play
9:21
you my clip of me backgrounding with
9:24
Cynthia and Revo. You [laughter] you
9:25
ready for this? Okay. You said you need
9:27
video proof. I need to put both of
9:28
these.
9:29
>> Okay. Okay. Watch that video. Go ahead.
9:31
>> I tried to hit it a few times this
9:32
morning.
9:34
>> Can I hear it?
9:38
[screaming]
9:39
>> S. That's actually amazing.
9:41
And you like, "Okay, turn Cynthia down."
9:44
What' you say, Gabby? Cuz she Gabby
9:46
looked scared to me. She felt like it
9:48
was Friday the 13th.
9:49
>> I mean, cuz the way you was gassing it,
9:52
I thought it was about to be a little a
9:53
little crazy, you know, a little better
9:55
than than that. But, you know,
9:57
[laughter] but you know, I think your
9:59
your heart was there. Your you were very
10:02
intentional with with where you wanted
10:04
to place it
10:05
>> and and everything. It was it was all
10:07
right. It was all right with Cynthia. I
10:09
don't know. It wasn't all right with me.
10:11
Show Melanie now. Show Melanie for
10:14
myself. [laughter]
10:15
>> All is not well in her soul after she
10:18
heard that. [laughter]
10:20
[screaming]
10:22
>> That's how it really sound.
10:26
[laughter]
10:28
>> That's actually amazing.
10:28
>> They need that as a sound. That's a
10:31
sound. [laughter] They need that.
10:34
>> Y'all need to upload that now.
10:36
>> That's a sound. That's That's when you
10:38
jump [laughter] out.
10:40
>> A little VBR at the end.
10:41
>> There you go. All right.
10:44
>> That's when you jump. She said when you
10:45
jump out. [crying]
10:46
>> Well, listen. Listen.
10:51
>> That's when you jump out the bed in the
10:52
morning and twist your ankle. [laughter]
10:55
>> That sound effect.
10:56
>> All right, Gabby.
10:57
>> Like, [ __ ] I'm 40.
11:00
[laughter]
11:00
>> Right.
11:03
>> I'm not sure how I'm receiving this
11:05
right now. He was a guest on my show. I
11:07
don't know. [laughter]
11:10
>> That 40y old ankle
11:12
>> horse. I don't know what to take.
11:14
[laughter] It got the American
11:15
>> that thick ankle sound.
11:17
>> All right.
11:18
>> Thank you. Thank you. With Cynthia, I
11:19
notice how you specified.
11:20
>> So, Melanie. [laughter]
11:21
>> All right. Torch. You got Melanie.
11:24
Whatever. But while he does that, Tracy,
11:26
you want to jump in?
11:28
>> Yes, Kev. It's so good to have you. I'm
11:31
wondering when I think about American
11:32
Idol like it's interesting because
11:34
American Idol
11:35
>> it it compresses like years of artistic
11:38
growth into just a few weeks that we see
11:41
and edited weeks that we see as an
11:44
audience. What part of yourself do you
11:47
feel like we the viewers did not get to
11:50
see that you wish we had? M
11:53
honestly, this side of me, I think the
11:56
the one who loves to laugh, who's
11:59
comfortable, who who who who just chill,
12:02
who who likes to geek with with people,
12:04
you know. Um I feel like when the
12:06
cameras cut on and um when it was just a
12:09
whole bunch of people that didn't look
12:10
like me around, who didn't act like me,
12:12
who didn't sound like me, you know, I'm
12:14
from I'm from Baltimore. I'm from, you
12:15
know, I'm from the trenches. So, you
12:17
know, being around a new environment was
12:19
just different from for me. and I wasn't
12:22
really able to open up um as much as I
12:25
wanted to. And okay, you know, even
12:27
reading the comments, some people
12:28
people, you know, they kind of, you
12:30
know, misjudged me. They didn't they
12:32
didn't they they didn't really know who
12:33
I was. But, um I think I would uh
12:36
definitely say this side of me like I'm
12:38
I'm I be chilling. And I think people
12:41
sometimes just when you chilling and you
12:44
just not, you know, in the in the mix,
12:46
you don't really try to be, you know,
12:48
the person that you're you're not. It's
12:50
it comes off as a little like, okay,
12:53
she's I don't like her. She's a little
12:54
standoffish. But, um, yeah, that was
12:57
definitely like a struggle for me just
12:59
just turning it on when the when the
13:01
when the cameras the big cameras came
13:03
on. They they want to know your whole
13:04
life story, your struggles and and all
13:06
of that. Um, which is worth it every,
13:09
you know, I feel like it it was
13:10
definitely necessary. The story is
13:12
always necessary. Um, but now I know I I
13:16
learned a lot from that that now I know
13:17
that vulnerability is is really
13:19
important and um that I struggled I
13:22
struggled with that on on that show.
13:25
>> Well, you was also learning in front of
13:27
>> America, you know, and that's not easy
13:29
either, you know. You're learning in
13:30
front of the world. So, yeah, it's all
13:32
cool. It's part of the process, but
13:34
you're great. You're here and your music
13:36
sounds great. Thank you.
13:37
>> What was the adjustment like um going
13:39
from the stage of American Idol and
13:42
coming back home to your neighborhood?
13:44
>> Um it was I mean it was a little weird
13:48
actually. Um you know I didn't I feel
13:51
like sometimes the community you know
13:54
home they're so used to you. They're so
13:56
used to little Gabby. Oh my gosh I saw
13:58
her growing up. You know she's the baby
14:00
of the family. I've always been the
14:02
baby. I'm the youngest first cousin. I'm
14:05
I've always been the baby. So, um, even
14:07
when I started driving, people were
14:08
like, "Oh my god, you're driving. What?
14:10
[laughter] You're still five?" I'm like,
14:11
"No, I'm 23. What you talking about?"
14:13
But, um, coming back home from that was
14:15
just like, "Oh my gosh, I miss the
14:18
community.
14:19
>> I miss the the friends that I made."
14:21
It's just a whole different universe out
14:24
there. Sometimes it can feel stuffy in
14:26
in in Baltimore and even in the city
14:28
that you you grew up in anywhere. So, um
14:31
just being able to experience a new um
14:34
vibe and a new like just just sense of
14:37
support from people that never met you.
14:39
>> Yeah.
14:40
>> But they just support you and they love
14:42
you and it's like we only knew each
14:44
other for those, you know, few months.
14:46
And it's like, oh yeah, I want to call I
14:48
want to call Kobe. Like I can call her
14:50
right now and she'll answer the phone.
14:51
It's just that support um coming coming
14:54
back right there. Did she just stunt on
14:56
us right there?
14:56
>> Kobe knows we love her. She she's called
14:58
into the show. She's been on the show.
15:00
>> Yeah, she's called me to the show. We
15:01
love her.
15:01
>> Kobe. I love Kobe. She Yeah, she's one
15:03
of the ones that um I just grew with. We
15:06
were actually roommates out there. So,
15:09
keep going. Yeah. So, we became really
15:10
close. Victor um you know, Jamal, Kanan,
15:14
you know, every everybody everybody
15:15
became close. So, I would definitely say
15:17
that community. I really missed that. I
15:19
missed that a lot.
15:21
>> Man, that's that's just sound like a
15:22
beautiful experience. After Victor, you
15:24
said what's the other guy's name?
15:25
>> Kanan.
15:26
>> Before Kanan.
15:27
>> Jamal.
15:28
>> Jamal. Yeah.
15:29
>> Okay. All right.
15:30
>> Yeah. [laughter] So,
15:31
>> why you
15:32
>> my brother who won he won he won he won
15:35
American Idol, you know. Um I'm proud.
15:37
It was the first male winner since you
15:39
know uh what uh Ruben
15:41
>> Stutter Stutter. Yep. So, you know, we
15:45
we proud of him. He doing his thing and
15:47
um Yeah. You know, I'm just glad I'm
15:49
glad one of us won, you know.
15:51
>> Absolutely.
15:52
>> This was Al shoulders. Yeah.
15:53
>> Yeah, man.
15:54
>> That's why that's why I got hooked it. I
15:57
got to watch. It was actually Kobe's
15:59
audition that I saw. I was like, "What
16:01
the heck?" Remember when she Man, she
16:04
sang that Girlfriend um she did a vet
16:06
>> and killed
16:07
>> and killed it.
16:08
>> It's her song now.
16:09
>> It's her song now for sure.
16:10
>> We we reacted to it all together before
16:12
and we were just doing all her runs
16:14
like, "Girl, you crazy."
16:15
>> Yeah, she killed it.
16:16
>> Hey, Mike, you want to jump in?
16:18
>> Yeah. Hey, Gabby. But first, what's up,
16:20
Michelle Huff? How you doing out there,
16:22
Michelle? [laughter]
16:24
>> It's like bring your friend to work day.
16:26
I love you, Michelle. Um, Gabby, you are
16:28
amazing. I've been watching you for a
16:30
while now. Um, I'm so proud of you. But
16:33
what I love is for me, you are all the
16:37
things that I love and miss about R&B
16:41
and The Quiet Storm. Um, like real
16:44
singers, but still feels very
16:46
contemporary. And you're not afraid to
16:49
show your vocal ability and your range.
16:51
And I love the way you have such
16:53
constraint and discipline in a song. and
16:56
when to hit the high notes and when to
16:57
take us to the bridge. I think you're so
16:59
well disciplined. I think you are a true
17:01
singer and I think you truly understands
17:03
the technicality of being a singer. Um,
17:06
but with that being said, I just want to
17:08
know how you are thinking about your
17:09
album because one of the concerns I have
17:12
for the great singers and I put you
17:13
right up there. Um, and I'm not I'm not
17:15
going to call them out, but we have some
17:16
great singers out there that have voices
17:18
that you see on all the tribute specials
17:21
and they can sing the rafters off, but
17:23
then when they release singles and
17:24
albums, it just falls flat and the vocal
17:27
performance never matches the beats. But
17:30
I feel in this song complicated like
17:32
your vocal performance matches the beats
17:34
and so I'm just wondering how are you
17:35
and your team, you know, thinking about
17:37
that as you go forward with your album
17:39
and and future songs that you do.
17:42
>> Yeah. So that's a that's a good
17:44
question. Um I just go into it, you
17:48
know, thinking about what I would play
17:51
in my car and sing and and um if I if I
17:54
couldn't, you know, do the things, you
17:56
know, what would I like if if I could if
18:00
I couldn't do the things that I could
18:01
do, um I'm thinking like would I sing
18:04
this in my car, you know, would I scream
18:06
this in my car or would I feel
18:08
comfortable doing it on karaoke? You
18:11
know what I mean? Like I feel like um as
18:13
singers sometimes it's it's hard to not
18:16
go off and and not want to you know you
18:19
know just just start running around cuz
18:21
you can do it. Um but I learned that
18:24
control is is just so much more
18:27
palatable
18:28
>> for for people. So I'm definitely going
18:30
into it with like a oh yeah if I I want
18:34
to be able to I want people to be able
18:35
to sing it. I want people to be able to
18:37
vibe to it. I don't want to be screaming
18:39
on a song for a whole four minutes or
18:42
three minutes or running through a song.
18:44
That that gets tired. So, um, yeah. And
18:46
I just want to make it feel good. You
18:48
know what I mean? It don't feel good
18:49
when it's crazy.
18:50
>> Can I ask you real quickly? What is your
18:52
thoughts when Kelly Clarkson responded
18:54
to you and gave you feedback cuz I look
18:57
at her as an incredible vocalist who
18:59
understand tracks and how to make pop
19:01
music but still have a great vocal
19:02
ability but still rooted in soul and
19:04
R&B. So, I'm curious when she gave you
19:06
her feedback on on her show, what how
19:08
did you internalize that?
19:11
>> Oh my gosh. I was like, what? I was
19:14
like, first of all, you can sing
19:15
anything. I I was just, she can sing
19:18
anything. So, when she said that, I'm
19:19
like, girl, stop playing with me. Stop
19:22
playing with me right now. But, um, I
19:24
was actually really nervous to sing that
19:26
to sing complicated on her show. Um,
19:28
just just, uh, just to be transparent
19:31
because this was my first time singing
19:33
it on national television. This is a
19:34
direct mic and they hear everything and
19:38
um it's super bruffy like she said. It's
19:40
just a it's kind of a it's an easy song
19:42
to sing but it's hard at the same time
19:45
because it's so it's so technical you
19:48
have to
19:49
>> you got to sing it right or it's just
19:50
going to be like what what are you
19:51
doing? It don't sound right. So it's
19:53
really breathy and then the control as a
19:55
singer you want to you want to belt you
19:57
want to do. So it it was really tough
19:59
for me to sing that song. But when she
20:01
when she gave me her stamp of approval,
20:03
I was just like, "Okay, I did a little
20:05
something." [laughter]
20:06
>> Carson, come on.
20:08
>> That's right. Gabby Simone is here. New
20:10
new single is called Complicated.
20:12
Working on a new album.
20:13
>> Um, you wrote Complicated or co-wrote.
20:16
>> Yes.
20:16
>> Right. Um, [clears throat]
20:18
>> is that rooted in Well, give give us the
20:20
plot of Complicated first.
20:22
>> Okay.
20:22
>> Okay. [laughter]
20:23
>> All right. It's time to talk about
20:25
business.
20:25
>> Yeah.
20:27
>> Listening. [laughter]
20:30
So, um it's it's exactly what it what it
20:32
what it sounds like. It's a complicated
20:34
relationship. Um I didn't go to co I
20:37
went to college for about two weeks.
20:38
>> Um I it was during the pandemic. I went
20:41
to boy for a little bit and um I wasn't
20:44
on campus. So um I dropped out. But um
20:48
my situation was in college. A guy.
20:51
>> A guy. Yes. Okay.
20:53
>> And [laughter]
20:55
we just trying to get her father all the
20:57
church. The church.
20:59
>> [laughter]
21:00
>> Daddy heard the song. So,
21:02
>> Right. Yeah.
21:03
>> No, but um
21:05
>> situation was in college.
21:06
>> He was in college and um this was my
21:08
first like situation, my first
21:10
relationship and um he was out there
21:13
doing his thing and you know, you would
21:15
have thought this man was single and uh
21:18
you I you know, if we weren't in a
21:20
relationship, that's why it's sticky
21:22
situations because it's like we in a
21:24
relationship but we not. We talking, but
21:26
you know, I know what it is, but I don't
21:28
want to accept it.
21:29
>> So, he out there doing his thing. You
21:31
know, whenever he come home, we we
21:33
chilling, we good, you know, we
21:34
whatever. And then he'll go back and
21:36
he'll start, you know, doing his thing
21:38
again. And it's things that I didn't
21:40
even know. And when it start revealing
21:42
itself, I'm like, "Oh my gosh, like I'm
21:44
I'm hurt. I'm [clears throat] hurt." So,
21:46
when um when he started to come back
21:48
around, I'm just like I had to talk
21:50
myself out of it, you know? But um it
21:53
was it was a real situation.
21:54
>> It was a real You said
21:56
>> it was a real situation.
21:57
>> It's complicated.
21:58
>> It's complicated.
21:59
>> That's hence the song.
22:00
>> I don't even know how it even ended
22:02
honestly. I
22:03
>> have you seen him since you blew up?
22:05
>> Um have since No, probably on social
22:09
media. Uh not really.
22:10
>> Okay.
22:10
>> He hasn't reached out since you hit that
22:12
stage.
22:13
>> No. No. No. No. No. No. Like we not
22:15
gonna talk about that.
22:16
>> Okay.
22:16
>> It don't even matter. I feel like I
22:18
don't even be in my my DMs. I probably
22:20
blocked them a long time ago. I be
22:21
blocked. I listen the block I love a
22:23
block button. I block everybody that
22:26
that I don't like. I don't like I ain't
22:28
dealing with no more. I blocks
22:29
everybody. So,
22:30
>> what do you think that feeling is when
22:32
we all gone through this where we've
22:34
been in situations, if you will, that
22:36
you know is not healthy for you. But
22:39
when that person comes back around,
22:42
>> you're still so tempted. You still want
22:44
to take another dip. What do you think
22:46
that is? [laughter]
22:48
>> You call it a dip.
22:49
>> I call it a dip.
22:52
That's what it is. Um, I don't know what
22:54
it is, honestly. Like, who really knows
22:57
why why we do the dumb things that we
23:00
do? I think it's just like everybody has
23:02
to everybody is going to go through
23:04
through that. I feel like it's just and
23:06
that's why I love the song so much
23:07
because it's like everybody tells me
23:09
their stories like, "Girl, I was in this
23:12
situation. I can't believe you." Like,
23:14
yeah. Like, it's it's real. It's real.
23:17
Like we really we really do have our
23:18
little dumb moments like where we just
23:21
we just can't get off of a a man like
23:24
for some reason and they not even doing
23:25
nothing, you know? They not even doing
23:27
nothing for you. But it's just like the
23:28
feeling sometimes that they they give
23:30
you is just like it's a little
23:32
different.
23:33
>> You back dealing with a king. Sometimes
23:35
that happens. [laughter]
23:37
>> Not with a king.
23:40
[laughter]
23:40
>> Count a jester
23:43
when you dealing with one of the fools
23:45
in the court. [laughter]
23:47
Are you a block? You spin the block. You
23:49
learn from that. Do you spin the block
23:51
when it comes to situations?
23:52
>> No.
23:52
>> Okay.
23:53
>> All right.
23:54
>> Just block. That's all she just block.
23:56
Oh, I thought she said spin the block.
23:58
No, she just said block.
24:00
>> Oh, you block.
24:01
>> I didn't I didn't But listen, I done had
24:02
my my spin the block moments, right? But
24:05
I'm like, you know, uh-uh. It's It's not
24:07
even It's not even that no more, for
24:09
sure.
24:09
>> Good. Good for you. Because what's ahead
24:11
of you, you ain't got time for that.
24:13
>> Can't bring the wrong one with you.
24:14
>> Yeah, man. Leave them alone. Yeah. Leave
24:16
them on the side of the road. You ain't
24:18
got capacity to deal with what's ahead
24:19
of you. We need you focused. We need you
24:22
on track because you have a lot to offer
24:24
the world, the world of music, but the
24:26
community as a whole. As I hear you
24:29
speaking about wanting your your music
24:31
to reach souls and impact people in a in
24:33
a in a positive way. Um, you have all
24:36
the tools. It's all ready to hear. The
24:38
success is on you, you know, and we I
24:41
think we all have a sense of this. When
24:42
is the album coming?
24:45
Hopefully, you know, first of all, I'm
24:47
here. I'm working on music. I'm just
24:49
excited to, you know, collab, you know,
24:51
this year. This is like a creative year
24:53
for me. I feel like I'm I'm in my
24:56
creative era right now. I'm I'm turning
24:58
24 this year.
24:59
>> You better go. Come on. 24. [cheering]
25:01
>> I just feel like
25:02
>> When's your birthday?
25:03
>> February 28th.
25:04
>> Oh, soon. Happy early birthday.
25:07
>> Exactly. One month. What's up?
25:08
>> So, who Yes. Exactly.
25:09
>> Who do you want to collaborate with? Who
25:11
Who on your top wish list? Listen, I'm
25:13
just put this out here. Scissor.
25:16
>> Scissor. I love Scissor. Wow.
25:18
>> I want I want to work with her so bad.
25:20
Um, Seven Streeter. I just love the
25:23
writers. I just love that.
25:25
>> I could call I could call Seven for you
25:26
if you want me to.
25:27
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. You call Kobe. I'll call
25:30
[laughter]
25:31
>> Listen, I'll call Kobe right now.
25:32
>> Call Kobe. Let me see.
25:34
>> Sway. Call seven.
25:35
>> Oh, damn. [laughter]
25:38
>> No, actually seven has just been in the
25:40
news. I know Tracy will talk about this
25:43
probably tomorrow for Celebrity Wire,
25:44
but uh Seven was talking about the
25:46
Grammy noms and the album of the year
25:48
and she was saying that she she wants
25:50
Kendrick to get it and she hopes that um
25:52
Kendrick gets album of the year. So
25:53
salute to her. We love her. Singer,
25:55
songwriter, performer, all things. So
25:58
shout out to our girl Seven Street who's
26:00
been on this show a whole lot of times.
26:02
So we definitely love and support her.
26:05
>> Let me see if I can find that number.
26:06
>> Now you got to find a number.
26:09
>> Sway Op man. Hey, Gabby.
26:11
>> Oh. Oh, Kobe, I'm on I'm on uh I'm on
26:14

26:18
>> She said she got my
26:19
>> You ain't on Tell us with Sway and
26:20
>> Tell us what Sway and Heather, we love
26:22

26:23
>> Heather, they they love you. They want
26:24
to see you.
26:27
>> Hey girl, we love you.
26:30
>> You looking beautiful, Kobe.
26:32
>> You looking beautiful with your bonnet
26:34

26:36
waiting for you, too.
26:38
We can't hear her. What' she say?
26:40
>> Hold up. Let me put you in the mic. Say
26:41
it again.
26:42
>> I said, "Well, you better invite me,
26:43
honey. I'm on my way now."
26:45
>> We invited you. I I know. I know. The
26:47
last time we spoke, you could only do a
26:48

26:50

26:52
to have you in here and celebrate you as
26:54

26:57
inbox [laughter] you, call you. Look, if
26:59
I'll get a pager if I need to. Okay, I'm
27:02

27:03
>> Okay, let's go. [laughter]
27:06
>> Let's go. Well, I'm going to hit you up
27:08
uh today, Kobe.
27:09
>> Okay, let me try.
27:10
>> All right. I love you,
27:11
>> Kobe. Can't wait to see you. Can't wait
27:13
to see you. Okay.
27:14
>> Yes.
27:15
>> All right. There you go. Looking
27:17
beautiful. Okay. My
27:18
>> So, Gabby made her call. Let's see what
27:19
Sway going to do. We're just waiting.
27:22
>> Yeah. She waiting.
27:24
>> Let me see. Seven straight up.
27:26
>> Let's see if Seven picks up.
27:29
>> Might work. Might not.
27:30
>> Who this? I blocked you. Sway.
27:32
>> Damn. She ain't picking up crazy. and
27:34
seven fresh off of that uh docu series
27:36
on Netflix, Hitmakers.
27:38
>> Oh my gosh. Which was exceptional.
27:41
>> If she answers, I I think I'm going run
27:43
out the room.
27:45
>> Hey, seven. How you doing?
27:47
>> I'm good. How are you? Good morning.
27:49
>> I'm excellent. Thank you. Thank you. I I
27:52
hate to call you early, but
27:54
>> it's okay. It's okay. I'm I'm up anyway.
27:57
>> Okay. Well, you're live on the air.
27:58
Seven.
27:59
>> Well, hi everybody.
28:01
>> Hey, Seven. Hey, girl. Thank you.
28:04
[laughter]
28:04
>> How you guys doing?
28:05
>> Doing great. Your name came up today in
28:07
a beautiful conversation we're having
28:08
with American Idol Gabby Simone. Your
28:11
name came up.
28:12
>> Hi, S.
28:12
>> Hi, Gabby.
28:14
>> Hi. How you doing?
28:16
>> I'm amazing. Congratulations on
28:18
everything.
28:18

>> Yes, ma'am. Nice to meet you.
29:47
>> That's the illustrious Seven Street or
29:49
the critically acclaimed one. Seven.
29:51
Have a beautiful day. Thank you. Okay.
29:53
>> Thank you.
29:55
>> Okay. Don't play the
29:57
>> All right. Now, okay. All right, Torch.
30:00
Now you don't have to. Torch, now you
30:01
don't have to play the Melanie Fiona
30:03
thing. [laughter]
30:04
>> All right, Torch. It's okay now. Why
30:07
they playing with her?
30:08
>> You did one good deed today, Sway.
30:11
>> Playing with me, man. Y'all act like I
30:13
had been doing this.
30:14
>> Oh, you were scared. She was It was like
30:15
she picked up on the eighth ring.
30:17
[laughter]
30:18
You know, she ain't really. She wasn't
30:19
sure. She picked up. Oh my gosh. Oh,
30:23
man. How beautiful is that, Gabby? I'm
30:25
so happy for you.
30:26
>> Thank you.

>> That's amazing. So,
30:30
>> I can't even stop smiling.

>> And you saw her yesterday and you
30:33
chickenened out. What is that about?
30:35
>> I don't even know. You know, I I really
30:37
don't even know. But it's that anxiety.
30:40
It's just I don't even know, man. I was
30:43
like, why didn't I just go go over
30:46
there? I think it's just this thing. I
30:47
don't want nobody I don't want to
30:49
interrupt anybody's
30:51
>> I get that and I understand that. But
30:52
you have to understand like God has
30:54
aligned and anointed some things for you
30:56
obviously. And I don't think there's any
30:58
way in the world that you saw someone
31:00
who you've been wanting to work with and
31:03
put that out in your prayers and
31:04
universe and didn't speak to them
31:06
yesterday and less than 24 hours you get
31:09
that person on the phone. That's God in
31:11
your life, sis. And so don't be hesitant
31:15
about the blessings and the alignment
31:16
and the covering that he has for you.
31:19
walk into that cuz it obviously it was
31:21
meant to happen for you. I don't know
31:23
what your process was like before
31:24
American Idol if you had to stand online
31:26
or however they show us on television,
31:28
but if you was willing to do that for
31:30
you and for your calling,
31:32
>> go up to someone and say hello. It's up
31:34
to them how they respond to you. You
31:36
know what I mean? But you did what you
31:38
was called to do. So, I'm happy for you.
31:40
Can't wait to hear this collab for sure.
31:42
Blessings. Look at that, Gabby. Yo,
31:44
Torch, play that um play that Cynthia
31:46
Fiona. Play that Cynthia Rigo again and
31:48
see what her reaction is. [laughter]
31:51
>> Jesus.
31:51
>> Still tell the truth though.

32:36
song, it's like a go off moment. M.
32:38
>> So, I want to see what you can do with
32:41
that moment. The, you know, when I say
32:43
now,
32:44
>> why now?
32:45
>> Yeah. But you got to make it up. Like,
32:46
you got to be the leader of the choir.
32:48
>> Can you lead me into it?
32:49
>> Okay.
32:50
>> Okay.
32:54
[singing]
32:57
>> Tell me why.
32:59
>> Why now? sticky situation cuz I'm tied
33:04
up but you still wanna be around
33:08
now.
33:09
>> Why now?
33:13
Why now? [laughter]
33:15
Why now?
33:18

>> That's what you sing FOR THE DEVIL.
33:37
>> WHAT?
33:38
>> I KNOW which complicated he was singing.
33:40
>> Take that.
33:42
