INJURED JOURNALIST ON WHEELCHAIR / YOUNG MAN PUSHING WHEELCHAIR / CROWD OF POLICE NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, US - MAY 30, 2026 - FILE FOOTAGE: New Jersey authorities announced on Thursday, June 4, that an Essex County Prosecutor’s Office sergeant had been charged with theft for allegedly taking a photojournalist’s camera equipment after the journalist was injured while covering a protest at Delaney Hall in Newark on May 30. Sergeant Darryl Brown, 43, was charged with third-degree theft following an investigation by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA). According to investigators, the photojournalist was injured while covering the protest and dropped a camera bag containing cameras and related equipment valued at approximately $10,000 before being transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities said an Apple AirTag attached to one of the missing items was later traced to Brown's residence in Sparta Township. Brown had been deployed to the protest area in his official law enforcement capacity on May 30. Investigators also alleged that body-worn camera footage showed Brown interacting with a dark-colored bag matching the description of the journalist's belongings. A search warrant executed at Brown's residence on June 3 led to the recovery of several items reported missing by the journalist, including equipment bearing the victim's name and phone number, according to investigators. Brown has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation. If convicted, he faces a prison sentence of three to five years and a fine of up to $15,000. On May 30, protesters clashed with New Jersey State Police outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention center in Newark as demonstrations against US immigration enforcement turned violent, according to media reports. More than 200 people gathered outside the facility, where anti-ICE and pro-ICE groups assembled throughout the day, reported NJ.com. Tensions escalated after some protesters pushed against metal barricades surrounding the detention center. Police in riot gear responded by deploying tear gas and moved to disperse the crowd. Mounted officers were later deployed as some demonstrators threw rocks and bottles at law enforcement, while others urged compliance with police orders. Protesters also set a fire in the street outside the facility, said the report.
