Worshippers began filling mosques in the early morning, including Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, Fatih, Suleymaniye, Sultanahmet, Eyupsultan, Taksim and Grand Camlica mosques. Long queues formed outside Hagia Sophia and Sultanahmet as residents and foreign visitors arrived for the prayer. After Hagia Sophia reached capacity, worshippers prayed in the surrounding square on prayer rugs they brought with them. Following the prayer, attendees exchanged Eid greetings, while some foreign visitors took photos to mark the occasion. The holiday commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim, or Abraham, to sacrifice his son at the command of God, before the last-minute divine substitute of a ram. Muslims sacrifice animals in commemoration of this intervention and share the meat with the poor and their relatives.
