Streets, squares and public spaces were decorated with banners and posters marking the occasion, while mourning tents known locally as “heyat” were erected in neighborhoods throughout the city. Announcements for religious programs were displayed on bridges, walls and public squares, and residents also received information about upcoming events through mobile phone messages. The tents host mourning ceremonies commemorating Imam Hussein and the events of Karbala, with special gatherings traditionally held on key days of Muharram. Residents, neighborhood groups and local businesses also prepare food, tea, milk and other refreshments for participants attending the ceremonies.
