Arihah, Syria - March 06, 2025 A traditional Ramadan drummer, known locally as a musaharati, walks through the streets beating a drum and calling residents to wake for the pre-dawn suhoor meal in Ariha, Idlib province, Syria, on March 6, 2025. The centuries-old Ramadan tradition continued in the city during the first holy month following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024. Ariha, a former opposition-held city in northwestern Syria, endured years of Syrian government and allied bombardment during the civil war, leaving residential areas and infrastructure damaged. The musaharati traditionally walks through neighborhoods during the late-night hours, using rhythmic drumming and chants to wake Muslims before the daily Ramadan fast begins.
