.ALEPPO, SYRIA - JUNE 21, 2026: People gathered in Aleppo on Sunday, June 21, for a memorial event marking the 13th anniversary of a massacre carried out by the Assad regime, honoring the victims and calling for justice and accountability. Residents of the village of Resm en-Nafl, located in the southern countryside of Aleppo, offered prayers for those who lost their lives in the massacre and called for those responsible to be brought to justice. In 2013, forces of the ousted regime brutally massacred 208 civilians— reportedly mostly women and children—during an attack they carried out on the village. The head of the town council Ahmed Assaf, who attended the memorial event, told Anadolu that more than 200 people had lost their lives in the incident, and that the majority of the victims were women and children. Assaf called for the perpetrators to be identified and brought to justice and emphasized that no one has been arrested in connection with the incident to date. Muhammed al-Huseyin, a resident, said that some of the bodies of those killed in the massacre had been recovered, while others were still under the rubble. On Dec. 8, 2024, Syrian revolutionaries led by Ahmad al-Sharaa overthrew the Assad regime, ending more than two decades of Bashar al-Assad’s rule. A transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was formed in January 2025.
