Following a civil war and the collapse of the Siad Barre regime in the early 1990s, Somalia has become a federal republic consisting of five states excluding Somaliland while being divided into 18 administrative regions. UN agencies warned earlier this May that Somalia is facing a rapidly worsening hunger crisis that could push parts of the country toward famine without urgent humanitarian action and increased international funding. In a joint statement, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP) said nearly 6 million people – around 31% of Somalia’s population – are projected to face acute food insecurity between April and June 2026. The agencies said close to 1.9 million people are already experiencing emergency levels of hunger, a figure that has tripled in less than a year, according to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis.
