In western Gaza City, the near-total collapse of the municipal sewage network has triggered pervasive foul odors, attracting large rodent populations, and causing widespread environmental contamination. Local residents living alongside stagnant sewage pools and mounting piles of uncollected garbage face rapidly deteriorating sanitary conditions. The complete breakdown of municipal waste management services, coupled with extremely limited access to clean water and basic hygiene supplies, has left thousands of displaced families highly vulnerable. The deteriorating environmental situation has raised concerns over the potential spread of infectious diseases among residents already struggling with difficult living conditions. In May, UNICEF reported worsening health conditions among children in Gaza. Oweis cited growing numbers of respiratory infections, acute watery diarrhea, and skin diseases linked to deteriorating sanitation conditions and shortages of clean water. UNICEF also warned that damaged water infrastructure, restrictions on repair materials, and mounting waste are deepening the crisis, calling for unrestricted humanitarian access and adherence to international humanitarian law. Israel's genocide in Gaza since October 2023 has killed nearly 73,000 Palestinians and injured more than 173,000, most of them women and children, according to Palestinian figures. Despite a ceasefire that took effect on Oct. 10, 2025, the Israeli army has killed at least 947 Palestinians and injured 2,935 in near-daily attacks, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
