TENT CAMP IN AL-MAWASI AREA OF GAZA (TWO SHOTS) GAZA, PALESTINE - AUG. 6, 2026: Thousands of displaced Palestinian families living in tents in southern Gaza are struggling with extreme heat, water shortages, food scarcity and security risks due to ongoing Israeli attacks and blockade. Families sheltering in the Al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis, walk long distances to collect water for drinking, cooking and washing, while many rely on meals distributed by aid organizations to meet their daily food needs. Jamlat al-Siyam, who was displaced from Rafah, said the tent where she lives with her children and grandchildren has become unbearable during the summer. She said the family struggles to obtain water, food and bread, and must walk long distances carrying containers to collect water. Al-Siyam said the family had built protective barriers from rubble around their tent because of concerns about gunfire from nearby areas. She said they do not feel safe and fear Israeli soldiers could enter the area at any time. Khuloud Abu Muhsin, a mother of five, said she faces difficulties meeting her family's basic needs and often has only rice and lentils to feed her children. She said her six-month-old baby is suffering from severe malnutrition and that she cannot obtain infant formula or diapers. According to Palestinian officials, around 1.4 1.4 million Palestinians in Gaza face acute levels of food insecurity, while medicine shortages in the war-ravaged enclave have reached 47%. Since the start of Israel’s genocide in Gaza on Oct. 8, 2023, around 73,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 173,000 injured, while nearly 90% of the enclave’s civilian infrastructure has been destroyed. Despite the ceasefire agreement in effect since Oct. 10, 2025, Israel has continued its attacks across the enclave, killing 1,250 Palestinians and injuring 4,110 others, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
